Most of these kinds of books are written by ghost writers or aided by an actual author but in this case, we can definitely tell that Jake wrote this book by himself.

I mean, that's kind of the case with every self-written book. The personality (or lack thereof) really shines through. While Jake's book is an example of a shitty book that SHOULD'VE had a ghost writer, I'd say Dan and Phil's book was actually a really good example of when creators should make the book themselves. Granted, it's been several years since I've read Dan and Phil's book, but I do still remember how fun it was to read and look at (the design was phenomenal!). While I no longer watch their content anymore (adulthood am I right?), the book still remains a part of my collection of "fun books". And yes, I have a "fun books" collection, lol. But you might be right in saying most of these celeb biographies are ghost written. Not everyone is very creative, nor is everyone a writer.

Gotta give credit to Jake Paul, the book may be awful, but it actually seems like he wrote it himself, which is more than I can say for most celebrity books. I mean no professional writer could write that bad

I was gonna write a reply with some kind of joke, but actually it’s an awkward moment when a ghost writer is asked to keep their clients “style” and “tone” and said “style” and “tone” is just bad writing. You then, have to write badly, but like, intentionally? P.s I am a ghost writer. A writer who is a ghost. Which is also awkward.

as an English major who's studying poetry, Gabbie Hanna's book just makes a mockery of the craft. it tones down how hard writing poetry really is and how powerful and deep and cathartic it can actually be if you just sit down and CARE ABOUT IT. so many people don't take poetry seriously because of books like this and it's sad to see :(

@Dizzy oh, no I have not!!! But I've definitely added it to my list (I've got a little google doc I keep of poems I like to come back and listen to every now and then). But heck yeah!! I'm glad to find sort of an even ground with ya, and I hope you take care of yourself in these weird as hell times. I really liked this conversation haha
Dizzy 17 gün önce
@Kaylee Ryan thanks so much for your thoughtful response! the fact that poets like him draw such vast audiences and consistent praise make it quite clear that the problem is me, not him/the modern poetry genre as a whole. On your recommendation, I've now read OCD and The Future - and I actually quite like these. I'm still more more drawn to traditional poetry, but i can pick up on a depth and mastery (of what? i'm not sure, not sure i will) that shows that genuine time and care has been put into it. Certainly more than anything Gabbie Hanna has ever produced. This is all to say - this style of free-verse, stream of thought modern poetry isn't my thing, but i've got a bit more of an appreciation for it now. Thanks! On a separate note, speaking of modern poetry - have you listened to Taro by Alt-J? The lyrics are beautiful - it's about the death of war photographer Robert Capa (via landmine) not long after the similarly violent death of his lover, Gerda Taro. Idk, the beginning of 'The Future' made me think of it!
Kaylee Ryan
Kaylee Ryan 17 gün önce
@Dizzy I guess if your style is traditional poetry, you're not going to like poets like that at all. There are so many different genres of poetry, and Neil hilborns is specifically of the slam poetry free verse type genre. So I totally get why you think his poetry is bad. I personally like his poems "The Future", and "OCD" which are some of his most popular, but I think pretty solid. I like his more casual way of speaking, and I think his peppered use of imagery and inner monologue keeps me engaged. Which isnt to say you MUST enjoy it. I think me and you are on opposite sides of the spectrum. I personally DONT like traditional poetry. So clearly we like different things! And that's okay :) it was really cool of you to branch out and look him up though, and I hope you have a good new year
Dizzy 17 gün önce
@Kaylee Ryan i looked up some neil hilborn poetry, and i've got to say, it doesnt seem much better than gabbie hannah's passable poems. as someone who prefers traditional poetry, i'm not trying to be provocative here - i just want to understand. what am i missing? in the majority of his poems there isn't any kind of structure, rhymescheme, rhythm or flow, so the 'art' isn't coming from there. then is it just... the thoughts he expresses? they're pretty thoughts, but they're stream of thought shower thoughts. so, the sentiment themselves aren't what's supposed to impress. So... what is it? Am i not understanding some other dimension here? can you recommend a poem of his that you like, and why you like it? Also, this isnt to criticize you in any way - what resonates with us resonates with us. But, with this modern free-verse stream of thought poetry, i'm struggling to separate the good from the bad.

@Bee T It's almost like people believe wearing 'skimpy' clothes is on the level of being NAKED specifically when girls do it, and now have decided to discourage girls from showing any skin as a result... Smh. It shows their thought process when someone says "Wear what you want," and not only assumes that means 'skimpy,' (as if all girls secretly want to dress that way,) and also assumes that basically translates to "completely naked." Also if a girl goes nude outside the worst that will happen is they get a fine and then never go out naked again.

Ironically, a book written about the life and the twisted inner monologue of a boy like Jake, could be great novel with an unreliable narrator. "Writing" the book could be an interesting point of delusion and possible self reflection for the character that, which inevitably doesn't lead to any change for him, and his life eventually ends up in bitter shambles... Damn, if I was a writer, maybe I'd write that American Psycho-esque story 🤔

@anita Crumbly nothin wrong with being childlike at heart and silly, what is wrong is being like "im 27 but i act like im 12!!" Seen plenty of predators use that type of argument. Its gross. @xFalsify bro youre 27 you shouldnt be relating yourself to 12 year olds at all. It doesn't make you quirky or original, ot makes you sound creepy and like you're trying to relate to 12 year olds. Since youre a man whos almost 30, closer now since its been a year or 2, then at least own the fact youre aging and are close to the age of 30. You have nothing in common with 12 year olds unless youve literally made your personality to be based on 12 year olds. Which is weird Like grow up and go do your taxes weirdo

Dan and Phil's books were amazing. They're already sort of a "here's stories of my life, and we like sharing things with you" and that's how it was in their books. It feels like a genuine passion for sharing with their audience, and I haven't read Dan's new book yet, but it doesn't feel like it was anything he "had" to do, I think it's something that he already wanted to do and is passionate about and put time and effort into. I've also read Miranda Sing's book, which is (as you said in the video being a good thing) basically an extension of her TRvid channel, and it was really enjoyable. A couple TRvidr books I can't say were too good were Shane Dawson's books. I enjoyed them and thought they were funny at the time (when I was a huge fan of his), but since all of those things have come out and other channels have evaluated some things from his books, I realized how messed up, weird, and harmful they were. They were also pretty manipulative. I do think it's rather silly that so many TRvidrs feel the need to release a book, and I do think that a LOT of them are forced and not very genuine, but the few I know to be genuine are those from Dan and Phil. They put a lot of time and effort and thought into their books, and they feel like an extension of them and their personalities. That all being said, Drew, you should write a book. Make it bad. The people would love that.

I watched this whole video JUST to make sure you mentioned The Book of Mythicality, and I'm so glad you did. My mom bought me that book just because I watch Good Mythical Morning so much, and it was definitely a fantastic read. Their novel, The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek was also a great read. My biggest takeaway from this video is that you can definitely tell how much TRvidrs care about their fans when they publish books, and Rhett and Link are great examples of TRvidrs that care about their fans, work really hard, and deserve every cent they make.

He's not really a "youtuber" but he's close enough and "How to ruin everything: Essays" by Watsky is honestly such a great book. It's just some short autobiographical stories and some sort of lesson or pondering attached to each one, so it doesn't sound all that special, but his specialty really shows by how well-written and funny the book is.

I haven't read any youtuber books, but I have watched Dan and Phil's interactive introverts show (I got the DVD). I absolutely loved it! They had audience participation, games, online polls, stories, challenges etc. They're insanely creative people, together and on their own. They create things that fit themselves and things that fit both, and it changes with them as they grow. They've also worked with Young Minds UK! I know they're not so much in the spotlight anymore, but I enjoy their content nonetheless :)

As far as the pricing goes she was literally competing with beautiful poetry books like "Milk & Honey" (which was set at $14.99) books that were amazingly drawn, written, and created - her price for her poetry at that time was NOT worth $17.

Yeah I sadly unsubscribed to him several years back when I felt like his attitude really pivoted in that direction. I also felt like all his content was "look at me and what event/vacation/sponsored thing I'm doing" and as someone who grew up poor...I just couldn't relate to that and it felt really low effort.

@Allison Dickson That’s the whole point of being a ‘Not like the girls/guys’ person. It’s like when a person tried to be cool & epic, but actually comes off as obnoxious or pandering. The reason they’re called ‘Not like the girls/guys’ is because that’s what they claim to be, even though they aren’t.

@Whatsit Tooya I think her poetry was poorly executed but I see the style she was going for. I do hope in her next book there's less filler and blank pages, because I do agree that wasn't cool. I also have no problem with people critiquing her, just saying that some people enjoy her humor and overall the book is harmless.

As a female, I suffered severe vicarious embarrassment from whatever monstrosity Jake Paul wrote in his book. It was fine till the motivation part, where he was talking about going 170 miles per hour (or something). It was funny and I clearly did not take it seriously but when it got to the girls' part, it started to become extremely uncomfortable. I can't imagine what other people must have gone through reading that... imagine being described in such an intimate way, regardless of what your gender is...

In like 2015 I bought a book called "The Altered Adventure" the author of this book was my favorite youtuber at the time- Gizzy Gazza. The story itself was fantastic (from my memories as a 10-year-old). He made a youtube roleplay with this story and then wrote a book with the same story, just in more detail. Although I did not like the writing all that much, it was good enough that he wrote and produced three books.

I read a TRvidr book once (a German youtuber) and it was so good it was so much better than I expected. It was about how school does not teach youor prepares you for life and this book teaches about mental health, how to stay healthy, how to live as an adult, how relationships ‚work‘ and a lot of very interesting stuff that has scientific background and they spent I believe 3 years researching and preparing for this book even though they are both comedy creators

I don't think anyone's said it yet, but you're so well versed and fair. Usually when I see titles such as these with 'youtube books' or other influencer creations in them it's to be expected that a lot of people will talk just about, or more focused on, the drama rather than the actual book. Sure, she's not a good person according to a lot of her actions, but judge the book and make fair criticisms if that's what you set out to do. I don't like poetry (much less hers) or Jake Paul's anything, but I for once enjoyed hearing how their products were differentiated from their persons. Thanks, Drew.
