@Disaster Artist And this guy probably won't. He had 2 years to write a great movie and he failed miserably. So balance of probability. This is his own movie, he made it by himself. He wrote the script, he directed the thing. Failure is all on him. In his other projects, he works with other people. It's clear to see what happens when he work alone.

One of the biggest problems with L&T was that it basically rehashed all the same stuff we’ve seen before in slightly different ways. - The Immigrant song used twice in Ragnarok was used 4 times here - Gorr is basically a watered down Thanos using some magic macguffin to achieve his goal of mass murder in an instant - The Zeus post credits scene is basically identical to the Guardians 2 post credits scene - The theatre piece being rehashed for jokes - Korg fake dies like Loki (but isn’t nearly as emotionally charged) - Korg is just being Korg. He was fine as a side character with a few minutes of screen time total, but he quickly gets annoying as a main character - Thor becoming a dad like Tony - Thor needing to “figure out who he is” for like the third time now - Getting the thunderbolt because it’s a powerful weapon that can help stop Gorr like when Thor went to make Stormbreaker in IW Also, all the characters felt like parodies of themselves. Pretty much the entire movie felt like if the Team Thor shorts were turned into a theatrical movie. Nothing but jokes, turning Thor into an idiot, etc. Also, Taika really seems to hate Sif and the Warriors Three. He killed off the three instantly with no regard for Thor’s emotional response, he brought Sif back in a comic accurate costume just to cut off her arm and write her out of the movie, and I feel like it was all just to make room for Valkyrie and his OC that is Korg. I’m pretty sure the only reason Sif wasn’t killed in Ragnarok was because of scheduling conflicts with the actor. And so much of the dialogue was basically just exposition and describing the plot like they’re reading script notes or something. It’s that one line Korg had in Ragnarok where he analyzed the loss of Mjolnir and applied to basically everyone. To me, Thor’s arc should have ended with him becoming king. It’s what his entire journey was leading up to, so to basically have that thrown away in favour of more wacky adventures feels like a character assassination.
Delusion 6 gün önce
At least the Team Thor sketches went for 2-3 minutes. They're funny and entertaining because they don't have/need a crazy story and the comedy was a hit and run, not a constantly smash you on the head for 2 hours. Watching characters do goofy shit for the sake of goofy shit is great for a short spin off like Team Thor but you can base a FEATURE LENGTH film on "hahaha so randem XD lol". Ragnarok worked because while there was a lot of goofy shit, it was balanced carefully with seriousness, had stakes, the characters developed meaningfully and stayed serious when necessary for the story. No one is going to take your plot seriously if your characters don't even take it seriously.

I think the early scene with the GOtG in Love + Thunder could have worked. It could have been pulled off if it was a dream sequence, or a poor retelling of what actually happened by an over-enthusiastic character. After the scene ends, you have a scene with two characters - the over-enthusiastic storyteller, and a non-believing listener. "There's no way that happened" - "no, I swear it really happened that way", etc. The scene would have had its entertainment value, but the sense of relief I would have felt knowing it was just a fantasy would have been immense. I thought it was effing ridiculous, that that scene was supposed to be something that actually happened.

I was hoping Thor would have an emotional outburst about how much loss he's endured, particularly in the scene where Jane tells him her condition. I really thought he'd start breaking down or have an outburst because even though he's just barely gotten back to a "healthy" mindset (which I don't think is true given he's just avoiding everything outside of fighting), this is yet another significant loss that he's being confronted with. I mean, he really can't catch a break. Since Thor 2, I think he's suffered significant losses in nearly every movie. It's honestly super tragic, and while we got to see how affected Thor was in End Game, I don't think we really got to see his recovery. He just got a slight bit of catharsis when they defeated Thanos. So I was expecting him to FINALLY have that in this movie when confronted by Jane's situation. But... Nothing. We got like a sympathetic sigh and a frown. Also, was I the only one who thought Thor should be confused by "cancer"? I mean, why would he already know the implications of cancer? I'd assumed that was a purely human affliction, one he hasn't encountered before, so unless he and Star Lord have been having serious heart to hearts about their pasts, I just didn't think this made sense.

Taika is the perfect example of what people refer to as an “ideas man”. Someone who is good for throwing out tons of options in the writing room but you’re not going to want him in charge because he is going to want to do all those ideas at once regardless of if they fit together or not.

@Gareth Eckley I've seen American Graffiti. Good film. Solid directing work on Lucas's part, and it didn't hurt that it had a prime Francis Ford Coppola as sole producer. I'm not hating on Lucas here. Far from it. Just pointing out that if you watch the first two Star Wars trilogies, his strengths and weaknesses jump out at you. He was much more hands-on in writing and production for the prequel trilogy than for the original, and it shows. We can thank Kershner, Brackett, and Kasdan for the Empire Strikes Back (Lucas penned the story, but wasn't involved with the direction or script). We can thank Lucas for the prequels' over-reliance on bad CGI, excessive Jedi political discussions, and brilliant lines about the horrors of sand. Like Taika, Lucas is a great ideas man, but problems arise when he steps out of his lane.

The difference in quality between the two Thor movies is a good example of worth ethic. Not to mention Stan Lee was still alive, if the movie sucked there would be hell to pay. With this movie there are no consuequences for a bad product, to the writer/director at least.

Taika seems to have a few strong suits, like creating some really impressive visual moments. But he isn't nearly restrained enough at the same time, wanting to cram slapstick or dated comedy into stories that don't call for it. It undermines the characters to the point that it's hard to take them seriously.

@crow And he does seem to be that kind of person in his personal life too. You can't expect a good, tight product from someone who's a mess.

@crow This is why people are getting sick of the super hero movies now. Top Gun 2 showed that yes people DO want to see normal movies not marvel only. There is just TOO MUCH CONTENT. Marvel phase 4 is packed with nonsense. It is like filler episodes of a anime instead of just the meat/core of the story.
crow Aylar önce
@Jim Self I think you may be right. When you have no regards to the source material or taking it seriously (I cannot get over Chris Hemsworth saying working with him was like working with a 7 year old), then of course the movie's going to turn out like crap.

I don't believe he's good at anything except filming too much ad hoc footage then taking the credit for all the work people behind the scenes do to clean it up. I honestly think he did such a bad job behind the scenes with Ragnorak that all of the writers and VFX crew abandoned him. So he was left having to write his own script and forced to publicly 'lampshade' the terrible vfx when promoting L&T.

How the MCU deals with humor these days is a major issue. Phases 1-3 dealt with it in a way in which the humor was more of an ice breaker or a light hearted exchange between the characters that never messed with or ruined a serious plot. The story was still every bit as serious as it was needed to be. Phase 4 treats humor like its a necessity in every show or movie irrespective of what the story requires. Thor love and thunder is a film which requires a very serious approach given it's context. Instead Waititi was like "make Thor funny hehehehe"
@Henley Shepard Black it goes without saying that good writing has gone out the window in Hollywood…compare any b movie from the 1930’s to 60’s and it has better writing than any “A” project or even praised indie film. But that’s been going on for decades. Obviously there have been some fine films: Mr. Turner, 1917, Atonement, Mr. Holmes, The King’s Speech, Venus, Bridge of Spies (and let’s toss in John Adams and Wolf Hall to represent some television), but even those I don’t believe will be timeless (maybe the TV ones will be…certainly the BBC The Hollow Crown filmed series of Shakespeare’s War of the Roses plays will become classics), but compared to the quantity of quality of films that came out every single year when I was growing up and as a younger person, the past few decades have been something of a joke (and yes, of course I realize there has always been a ton of sh#t as well). Regarding the MCU, Branaugh might have been a good choice if they went in a Wagnerian direction, but they didn’t, and in any case he hasn’t lived up to his early potential as a filmmaker (most particularly with Henry V). Some stuff worked in the first Thor, some didn’t. Bringing in Jane Foster was a walloping bad idea, unless they wanted to turn Thor into a Superman movie. Even Lee and Kirby knew enough to toss her aside after just a few years as they broadened the mythological scope of Thor. Then having much of the action rake place in a silly looking deserted desert town was just either stupid or low-budget. The second Thor barely had anything worth remembering, except we got to see a bit of Thor’s mom.
Henley Shepard Black
@PaulDavidArtistClub I completely agree. Film Thor I actually don't mind as much and would agree that his character development is one of the more well done ones in the MCU, apart from Iron Man. You make a great point though that for Thor to become a constant joker, just doesn't fit. Some of my biggest peves of the MCU and the newer Thor movies were the side characters and the (what I viewed as) subpar-script writing. Some of the side jokes and themes detracted from the good storytelling or reduced the quality of better jokes from other characters. I love humor in film but I don't like bad humor. I suppose I just feel like there is a lack of good writing in Hollywood these days and its sad to see good franchises muddled/ reduced by it.
@Henley Shepard Black One of the refreshing things about Marvel Comics in their heyday (the 1960’s through the mid 80’s…if generous; one of their very last good titles was the Simonson Thor run) was their humor. But it depended on the tone of the particular books. And Thor was NOT a series that had any ha-ha’s, or would have gained anything from an infusion of jokes (nor Doctor Strange). A good Thor series instead has to cash in on the epic. However I would say that the MCU Thor has had,, surprisingly, as much character development, and bad things happen to him, as any character seen in these movies other than Iron Man. In that regard, MCU Thor even improves on the comics Thor I grew up with, and the darkening of his nature is welcome from the cardboard cutout Hemsworth started out as (which is inherent to the Lee/Kirby comics character to begin with though)…but for Thor to become a constant jokester is ridiculous.
Henley Shepard Black
Well said. I can barely watch some of the new stuff because of how much “humor” they shove into it. You have to have a balanced script and I’m just not seeing it in a lot of MCU movies lately. Really disappointing since I was a major fan of the earlier films and the comics. :/

THANK YOU. Never does anyone think twice about the use of Viking culture for fun. But boy oh boy do we need to keep asian/african/whatever cultures to such a high regard. As a Swede it really annoys me with the double-standard of not being able to do an asian dialect for fun (not in a mocking way.) but THERE IS A SWEDISH MUPPET THAT GOES HURDIHURRDURR. Don't get me wrong. I think the Swedish Chef is absolutely amazing. But if you really break it down its absurd how one is okay but the other one is 'super racist' no matter the context. Edit; Just to clarify i think both should be okay and i'm not offended by the use of Viking culture. I think we should be able to enjoy all forms of background and types of dialects and have fun. Not get so damn overly PC that we lose sight of what is offensive and what isn't.

This is something I first noticed with Adam Sandler, talented comedians often need a leash. They need someone to pull them back and wind it down to focus, trim the fat, reduce down the sauce, sauté, sweat, and put it together. They are a fantastic ingredient, there needs to be a cook. Thor love and thunder is that, a fantastic set of ingredients thrown into a bot and left to boil. You have articulated the difference very well between doing something for comedy and using comedy to do something.
dragonlogos1 4 gün önce
@Anaryl like I said Adam sander is incredibly talented, I was not putting down Adam. I love Adam Sandler. But when you look at the films that he had full control off (his Netflix deal films are great examples) they just aren’t as good. I am not saying these people are not skilled I am saying that they are better when they let others bring out that skill and refine it down. Which is true of most people by the way, no one is at their best using only their own skills. They can even be in charge if they let people in to better their work. I chose Sandler as an example because in this film (Thor love and thunder), like many of Sandler disliked films, in isolation each joke is funny and well done but placed together in the service of the film itself it doesn’t function well. Because yes each is funny and well done but no one was focused on if the funny joke was fit to the purpose of the film. So you need that guy to pull it back and they need to listen to that guy.
Anaryl 5 gün önce
I think that's unfair. Adam Sandler was accused of being a onetrick pony back in the day - people certainly weren't accusing him of running wild or needing to be on a leash. Sure, some of those comedies didn't turn out great, but some of them are still really funny to this day. And to Sandler's credit he broke out of archtype a bit, he did dramatic work and in fairness it wasn't bad. His latest one the Gem dealer one is apparently *very* good. Waititi can do that dry Kiwi/Aussie/British humour exceedingly well; What We do in the Shadows (movie) is utterly fantastic; and it shows he truly is capable of subtletly & nuance. One does have to wonder if he was simply star struck, or whether, like Rings of Power, the studio put its thumbprint on the production.

Mel Brooks said this about Marty Feldman. He considered Marty Feldman to be one of the funniest people of all time, and said the issue with him was he would go so hard in one direction that it would stop being funny, but Brooks learned to “yank the reigns” to get Feldman back on track, and he wouldn’t be hysterical again. Ironically it seems to be the same issue Ghostbusters 2016 (also starring McCarthy and Hemsworth) had. Too many comedians being allowed to run wild with no one knowing how to reign them in.

One of the major reasons Curse of the Black Pearl was such a great movie was that it was so tightly edited and written. Even the most seemingly pointless action scene was packed with character or world building moments. Shame Disney went from that to just giving a random guy a camera and thinking they can glue something together later.

@spider beef The first PotC trilogy was good. The fourth was weird, pretty much unnecessary, but the fifth looked like it was the start to another Trilogy story, which I wouldn't have minded. However, with Disney going woke and wanting to replace Captain Jack Sparrow/Johnny Depp with a female actress just for "feminism"... now it'll probably be worse than the fourth movie. After all, Johnny Depp was the main success for those movies to begin with, the reason people wanted more.

I'm sure most people have heard that Taika offered Natalie Portman a role in his Star Wars project, apparently unaware that she had already played one of the most important characters in the entire Star Wars universe in three films. It says something about Hollywood that they would choose someone to take on a project they don't care enough about to know that sort of thing.

AS EVERYONE KNOWS IN SHOW BUSINESS EXCEPT THE CRAZIES, YOU NEED GOOD WRITERS. I've worked in a bit of newsroom stuff, not movies, but the same truth is here: The anchors are the presenters. The real script and magic with words happen with the tireless writers behind the scenes sitting in an office lined with computers and they type and create script for 8 hours. For newsroom stuff, it's a tireless and a job you don't get thanked for, but these are the real heroes.

That's the thing with phase 1 or 2, or whatever, they used to be "ok" movies unlike phase 4 where most of the movies and shows are actually crap, we used to believe some movies weren't all that good like Thor 2 but not on this level of crap. I've never had any issues with old mcu despite them have lesser movies and most specially I was always excited to see some stuff on tv like agent carter or agents of shield even though they were never actually canon, now that disney owns the best possible scenario of production with movies and shows that's what they deliver, it's a bit infuriating to say the least, of course I wanted to like what they make because the mcu was a huge success and they'd never do what they're doing now without it, it's a punch in the face to be a fan or actual delusion or lack of self awareness to claim that the current mcu is any good whatsoever

Being extra charitable, the scene in Love & Thunder also kind of sets up the idea that Asgardian Warriors disintegrate into gold dust, which pays off with Jane’s death? But I still agree with everything else, it’s a bad callback joke that takes way too much screentime. That being said, I’m not sure how much of this is Taika’s fault. There’s so many moments where the movie threatens to be interesting, intelligent, or emotionally complex in ways the MCU often shies away from, to the point it feels like a darker, more serious, tragic movie was the original goal… but then Disney came in and said, “But Ragnarok was funny! You’re the funny vampire guy, Taika! People love that! Just do Ragnarok again, people aren’t going to like all this cancer and death and musings on lost faith,” and Taika just said “Fuck it, if cheap jokes is what they want then the movie will just be cheap jokes.” My reasoning is if you look at Jojo Rabbit, you can see that Taika Waititi is clearly interested in making movies that are far more complex and interesting than what he’s usually known for. Jojo is still often very funny, but it has an honest emotional core that shines through similarly to the best scenes in Love & Thunder. I also don’t think Christian Bale or Natalie Portman would have done the movie if Taika’s pitch was “yeah it’s gonna be a goofy comedy with screaming goats and all the emotions will be undercut with one liners.”
Shannon Fletcher
Shannon Fletcher Aylar önce
right I agree!! it's hard to say how much of this movie's failures can be attributed to Taika personally, and he has a track record of really incredible projects, in which he's shown himself to be a very capable writer and director. He's normally excellent at balancing humorous and serious tone which is why this movie being so bad at it is surprising. I agree with a lot of the points made in this video but I think he was a little too harsh on Taika personally.

"A low effort, low intelligence, undisciplined production...by a man too complacent to push himself to do anything better" is the absolute best way to describe Love and Thunder. Like you said, Taika Waititi is definitely a very talented and creative film maker (I think Jo Jo Rabbit is one of the best films of the last decade) but he definitely phoned this one in. It's not a bad movie, it's just kind of a goofy nothing of a movie that criminally wasted an amazing villain portrayed by probably the most talented actor to enter the MCU since Robert Redford in Winter Soldier.

I see some parallels with this and euphoria season 2. Like how there was a clear cut idea on what the first production (Ragnarok & euphoria s1) should be like -> great writing, good direction, character study, makeup & costume, incredible music & visuals. Then the sequels are a single person idea that looked good in their heads. A production should always be a collective collaboration, and by that i enjoyed this masterclass Drinker!

He's a collaborator. That means he needs foils. You nailed it in your rundown of him. He's always been part of a writer's room, and as the writers room joker he's hugely valuable. Putting him alone at the front was the mistake. If he wasn't such a narcissist I'd think he just needs a partner, but what he probably needs is a handler who is also the lore guy ("no Taika, you can't do that. It doesn't make sense, from a lore standpoint or in the real world.")

While established backstories and events are important to pay attention to, it has little to do with good storytelling. More than anything, the writers needed to focus on the context of the scene that they were writing. When a scene serves a purpose, an audience notes its importance and is rewarded later on for paying attention to what it was trying to establish. That's how you write a good story: you trim every ounce of fat and leave nothing but the succulent, meaty parts for someone to devour.

Thanks for a cool video, never commented before but felt like you might appreciate the perspective: The statement of what a scene should accomplish is a bit limited when you take into account film styles that value scenes that do none of those things, like Italian neo realism, most post modernism, any comedy etc. Ignoring this, even by your own rules you missed a lot of the effects of the scene you look at in L+T.; The scene comparison with the theatre troop performing in New Asgard , those are the same actors right? Well the director has in this scene showed us how Asgardians have been reestablishing themselves on earth in NA and that they are actually able to pursue similar lifestyles. That's worldbuilding...Also i'm dumb so i forgot how the hammer broke and appreciated the recap. lol The statement that it could have instead been summarized by a line of dialogue is kinda sad, that's such an artless way to achieve something in a film.
MrRedwingsfan16 Gün önce
Okay ya, the movie wasn’t great and there was a lot wrong with it for sure. But to make this all about taika being childish and paint the picture as though he’s clueless is a laugh to say the least. Watch jojo rabbit, hunt for the wilderpeople, and of course what we do in the shadows. This movie seems like it may have been a breakdown in planning of sorts.

And forgetting everything about the other stuff that Thor has. I recall an old Comic and later a movie called Valhalla - about a pair of kids getting taken along to Asgard after Loki tricks one of them into breaking a bone of one of the goats that Thor's chariot is pulled by (and gets reborn after being killed and eaten... just one warning of not breaking the bones for the marrow since those will not return to full functionality. Only the meat will return), etc. That comic/movie had mentions of Thor''s adventures wrestling the midgaard worm, trying to drink from a drinkinghorn magically connected to an ocean, his best of Giant's strength, How he gets tricked into dancing with the personification of death in the disguise of an elderly woman - and only the faith of belief of one of the kids mentioned earlier, bringing Thor back to life since faith in the Gods have power in and of itself, etc.

The theater scene could have been great if Taika put a bit more thought into the scene. The theater scene could have explained why Jane is able to wield the hammer. What I imagine is that the play elaborates on what Hela did to Thor's hammer. They could show how Hela secretly collected the hammer before being teleported to Asgard. While she was ruling Asgard, Hela works on a spell to restore the hammer for herself. She succeeds, but places a new spell on the hammer. The spell only allows those who are worthy of being queen of Asgard to lift Mjolnir. This would better explain why Jane is able to lift the hammer in the movie. Jane posses the right traits to lead Asgard to its previous glory at Thor's side.

@Headless Robot What about the act of turning a sword is above human intelligence? What's more, in a world where such inventions are possible, why would the eventual development of such a thing be beyond human capabilities? Heck, even in the Marvel universe there are glimpses of a future humanity that has developed means of travel similar to if not greater than the bifrost. My point here is that "Asgardians" as a race are a product of a human intellect, and therefore cannot truly possess any qualities that are greater than a human mind or imagination.

I found the elevator scene in Thor: Ragnarok an example of a Taika scene done well. The development between Thor and Loki really hits an all time high in the brief dialogue they have in the elevator to the hangar. Thor acknowledges his brother, Loki for who he is and not what Thor hopes/wants him to be, but expresses his unconditional love for his brother regardless. The scene ends with Thor actually putting that new character development immediately into action by planting the shock device on Loki. Thor knew that after expressing his love to his brother that Loki would likely try something cheeky, showing further that he won't be tricked so easily as in the past. This scene has 2 jokes. One after a long, digestible pause in the elevator to break the cathartic moment with their "Get help" bit. This bit shows that sense of brotherly love their relationship has desperately needed and I think fits well since they give the dialogue some time to breath before whipping it out. The other, when Thor actually gets the best of Loki ( and some payback) by unexpectedly planting that shock device on him. Both of these jokes were funny (imo) and actually expressed the recent growth Thor has gone through as a character. Love and Thunder takes the goofyness from those jokes but removes the substance that respects the characters and story being told. They could have easily pulled this off with characters such as Gorr (if they had put decent time into his backstory) and Jane Foster who had a lot of potential for character growth. *sigh* I guess not :/
