/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */

Alright so the Last Of Us Episode 2 ends in a big way that changes something major about what happens to Tess. This is a big alteration for the show and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down why it was done and what the scene signified.

If you don't want any spoilers then this is your heads up as we're gonna be going deep on the show to discuss what originally happened and also what happened in the episode itself. If you're enjoying the videos so far and you aren't subscribed then I hope this is the one that gets you to join and with that out the way let's dive into it.

-

Ok so in The Last Of Us Game things played out pretty similar to how they do in the show. Joel, Tess and Ellie made their way across Boston to meet up with some fireflies in order to drop the latter off. On the way Tess was bitten in a museum and she ended up going out in a blaze of glory. Now where the game and show differ is that Tess died in a gunfight with Fedra during her final few moments. In the series though the location is swarmed by the infected and Tess ends up blowing herself up along with them.

Now The Last Of Us official podcast dived into why this was carried out and in it series Creator Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin talked about what originally happened in it. They said that Fedra being out that way didn't make much sense in the grand scheme of things and the more I think about it the more I agree.

Now in the game you had the scene where they were all caught outside the wall. You ended up killing two guards after they scanned Ellie and as the alarm was sounded you snuck through the surroundings taking out those you had to.

I think Tess' death is meant to mirror episode 1 with the guys that jumped her. She put up no resistance with the intent to harm them once she got the upper hand. That has probably been her survival strategy since the outbreak started.

The fear she showed when the reality of what was about to happen settled in was some great acting. Normally people in that situation act all tough and heroic when in reality most of us would be freaking out, crying, trembling. She played the role really well I thought.

I’m amazed Tess held it together for that long. Earlier in the show, the infection warning sign said that symptoms would start in about 15 minutes especially depending on where the bite was on the body. And in the first episode we see how fast the Adlers change after getting bitten. About the kiss scene, when Tess is outed as being infected, she steps forwards towards Joel, maybe looking for comfort, but of course he backs away. I really believe that Tess wanted one last kiss from Joel. So in a really messed up way, the fungus warps her mind, giving Tess that physical comfort she wanted but instead with the infected.

I think the infected man already could tell that she was infected, and that's why the horde didn't attack her. It's kind of like in World War Z when the horde ran around the little boy that was sick. There's no point in attacking what's infected already. So I think that weird kiss they had was a way of showing her that she's one of them now.
Steve K

WWZ was so bad though. I'm wanting to say the reason the zombies left that boy alone was because he had cancer cuz he had no hair, it's been a while though since I listened to whoever spilled the beans on it. Regardless, he wasn't infected just sick. Zombie logic in that movie was so so bad.

@dead fishing If you look closely (there are comments from the producers and ND about that), she is slowly giving up, because she is so terrified, but at the end, she still have something to give and finally lights the lighter. The actress was GREAT at showing all that. My point is, I excpected a different scene. I excpected tsome rage, some feeling of revolt and a little more violence. Some kind of final revenge. The explosion was violent, of course, but not so personal as shooting or using a bat or whatever. That's all.

@3razerhead799 That quick? Well, it could be a possibility. But at the last minute, she closed her eyes, knowing the impact of the explosion was coming. The scene wanted to show a beautiful version of transitioning from human to infected; being welcomed to the new pack. But in her own way, Tess rejected it and completed her last attempt for the sake of saving humanity.

The reason she dropped the lighter was because of the muscle spasms the infection induces. At first I thought she was just shaking from panic, but considering how her brain is probably being controlled in that moment it’s possible it’s the muscles spasms.

Hearing Tess speaking in this episode, I kept thinking, who the hell is that? I know that voice. I took the kiss to mean that the infected already knew she was one of them; the tendril kiss was an unexpected moment of connection for the cordyceps. The mushrooms we can see above ground are the tip of the iceberg that is the mycorrhizal network, the rest of it is almost entirely underground. The connection and the communication of the mycorrhizal network is a fascinating and terrifying thing.
Matt Griffin
Matt Griffin 2 aylar önce
I think that the acting is more extraordinary than the context of the kiss. I don't think that it was bait to shoot the scene in this fashion because the first moment that needs to work is essentially the last moment that works anyway... But as far as the acting goes, I thought that her eyes spoke for the whole scene. The acting wasn't overdone, and we get the "This is the only way" speech without actually saying those words. Her eyes do this for us, and we get sort of a fulfillment as we see that her purpose has been actualized.

for me the reason she did not move away, since cordyceps affect the brain the fungus might have been already affecting her brain at that point, mind controlling her, since the other infected recognized already she’s infected and then she recovers and fights one last time, lighting that lighter

That was my theory of why she was having a hard time lighting the lighter. She was kinda fighting the infection that was rapidly taking control of her brain.

It seems to me that there are different colonies of fungi. I think Tess her colony tried to expand to Joel when she reached out to him after saying she's infected. She could infect Joel by giving him a kiss. Tess getting kissed by that one infected could state the same thing. She was ignored by a dozen other infected because they knew she was infected, they could still see so they knew she was infected. This one infected showed interest in her, and all the others stopped ignoring her. He's probably some sort of leader of his colony and he knew/sensed she was not part of his colony. He might know she is without a colony, since the colony in the museum died of when Joel killed the remaining infected there. (Or maybe he just took her over because Tess hasn't turned completely.) This could also explain why there are zones in cities without infected. The colonies would leave a neutral zone in between them.

I actually really like this scene. It adds a whole new perspective to the Hive mind/ Horde. What if it felt right when she was having the mushrooms transferred to her? What if it felt calming to have it take over? Maybe it didn't take over, but it put a whole new set of traits and cravings. For example, they feel like other people that they once worked with are nothing rather than some monsters that killed their "friends" (I guess you could put it)? I'm not sure. I've got this whole idea but I can't put it into words :/

The one thing that didn't make sense to me about the lighter scene is how many times they showed grenades on the ground and she didn't think of grabbing one instead of using the lighter, I mean panic can make you overlook things I guess?

The kiss was a good touch, it forced me to interact with that scene but my question is what happens if she refused the kiss? Because we know they tear people apart but they didn’t tear her apart because she was already infected so why infect her some more? @aGrimTurtle there would be no need for that, I'm pretty sure the infected don't need to be uplinked to a network like a WiFi box. They just need to interact with a cordycepts patch or just straight up die, and let the cordycepts wires spread from their corpse and connect with other cordycepts lines (like in realize.)

@OmegaTrooper It is directly out of reality my man. Look up "fungus forest". I assume most do not even know about this but the entire Rockies to west coast of America has a massive fungal "forest" right under the ground and it has been spread itself for hundreds of thousands of years. Scientists claim it, like animals, can sense dangers to it and alters its path to avoid those. No idea how to explain it further as I am not a scientists but I found that fascinating.

I also saw that last scene as Tess looking the stalker right in the face, scarded that maybe that is what she is turning into, so scared she is flicking the lighter, but the process of turning is already happening while the stalker is getting closer. As they "kiss", she is scared and something in her fights to not turn into a stalker (also because this is the first episode we see clickers and stalkers up close) and finally she succeeds. Also showing that perhaps we always have a choice.

I’m kinda glad they went in the direction they did with Tess’ death. Adds way more layers and nuance to the nature of it, if I’m being honest. They could’ve easily had the horde tear her apart, or had her get the lighter first try and say a badass line before the explosion, but instead they framed it in the lens of something horrifically beautiful, while also putting the indomitable human spirit on display. She’s just about to give up, uses what little humanity she has left to try once more, and then BANG. What we’re seeing is absolutely disgusting and makes you want to puke but you don’t want to look away. Fucking brilliance.

One thing I don't see many people mentioning is the irony of the kiss, in that Tess' last moment is one of intimacy, but from entirely the wrong source, where just a minute before she implied that she loved Joel but he didn't love her back, or at least if he did, he didn't allow himself to express those feelings. So, perhaps the first pseudo-romantic intimacy freely given to her in who knows how long was from the antagonists of the series welcoming her in, but Joel was still so closed off that even the Infected were capable of showing her more affection than he was (at least "perceived" as affection; even if its intentions weren't romantic, it was still a weirdly gentle and kind of welcoming gesture). Which to me just made the whole thing that more sad. The look in her eyes at the end looked almost more sad than afraid to me which made me think she might have been thinking of Joel.

Grenades were just there to shoot out shrapnel, yeah sure it can probably light the fuel but grenades don’t have a fireball explosion like movies, so the lighter was definitely the right move, but tbh she would’ve been better off trying to get one of the lighter sparks to hit the gasoline if it didn’t light

The cordyceps infection in the show is so much more terrifying and cooler. I like the hive mind thing they added. Now the infected actually feel like some kinda characters who think. What would've made that lighter scene better is if instead of the lighter turning on and tess dropping it, it would skip it to the outside scene when joel and ellie escape and then the explosion. it wouldve given the scene almost as a sign that she gave up but in the end she pulled though. i still liked how the scene was done, but the sense of quick doubt we would feel if they offscreened it wouldve been cool.

I would like to think that the reason she tried the lighter again after giving up is the way the infected looked like we was going to kiss her reminded her of Joel which was comforting at first but then she decided to give it one more try for him.

The most terrible issue with Tess’ last scene was how she kept flicking the lighter and failing, when she could have easily flicked the lighter straight towards the floor so the sparks hit and ignore that gasoline she spread.. the fuel is RIGHT THERE!!

I saw a lot of people have so much rage because of that “kiss”. Personally, I like the way that they are expanding the story & shedding new light on the infected. Gives more purpose to the “protect Ellie at all costs” angle. I’ve played both games & the DLC 2x each and I’m a fan of the series. I’m really enjoying this adaptation so far, looking forward to what’s next!

Cole Durbin
Cole Durbin 2 aylar önce
No, the ratking is a unique anomaly, a freak occurrence in the basement of a hospital in Seattle, Washington, and it's been amalgamating and growing there since the first days of the outbreak. This episode takes place in Boston, Massachusetts. I don't know if you're from the US or you realize the distance between those two cities, but... Trust me, no.

Advice from a Hypocrite
Giving Tess a backstory would be a mistake. She’s a representation… we already know what we need to know to appreciate and love her character and what she adds to the story and overall world. A backstory would be as big as a mistake as Han Solo’s backstory

@DandyleonThey tried to go a “realistic” route in pt 2 with Joel getting killed suddenly but we all know Joel wouldn’t have trusted them enough to let that happen. Neil just had animosity towards the character.
Joe Furmick
Joe Furmick 2 aylar önce
@Pete I agree joel was many things hero wasn’t one of them. If you look at the note Ellie wasn’t the first immune kid they found and the rest died from the surgery too. The ethical (hard) choice would have been to give Ellie all the information and let her chose. The choice Joel made was shoot everyone in the head and run away, was it brave? it was many things including selfish and short sighted.
Dandyleon
Dandyleon 2 aylar önce
@Pete Nah it has to do with the fact that a character you grew attached to was killed off so suddenly and then you were forced to play as the character who did that. And for the show specifically if it happens the same way, they will be killing off Pedro Pascal. Whoever is casted as Abby will have to carry the second season with their acting and if they can't do so, then the season will be a complete failure.
Pete
Pete 2 aylar önce
The problem with Part 2 is many people didn’t understand the themes. Because you were playing as Joel in Part 1, many people didn’t realize there were no good people in this world. They thought they were Joel and they were heroes and their decision was a net good. Part 2 attacked and discarded them and they couldn’t engage the story for what it was.

I saw the virus in this episode as the general idea of nature taking over earth. Just like hurricanes cleanse earth etc. But it's interesting to hear they're going for the idea of love for the virus. When they talk about procreation it makes more sense than love for me. It felt to me like a new version of human race or something? Yet that kiss was very scary haha. They nailed it though.
Grayden
Grayden 2 aylar önce
Not a virus, a fungus. Two very different things, but essentially exist to propagate and spread. In nature, Cordyceps help control insect populations in the jungles/forests from growing out of control.

I get the analysis from the podcast and this video and I see what they were trying to do. I don’t necessarily hate it but it does create a problem for me in that this is the first and most likely the last time we’ll see someone be treated by the infected in this way. As interesting as the kiss was, I think it being (most likely) a one off takes away for me. Why Tess? Why this instance? Everyone else is attacked and bitten, brutally. In that respect, it doesn’t make a great deal of sense
NTV UK
NTV UK 2 aylar önce
@MrAronymous Right, I get it but why? How many people have been bitten or are infected and will turn that aren’t kissed by another infected? My point is we’ve never seen this behaviour from the infected before and whilst I don’t know, I suspect won’t see it again. The writers put this in for all the reasons that have been explained and to bring some kind of juxtaposition to the moment of love and loss in one scene, I get it, but in reality it doesn’t make sense in context of the world. That’s the only issue I have with it… unless of course we see similar behaviour from the infected at some again. Somehow I doubt we will though.
