/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */

Ok so The Last Of Us is probably my favourite game of all time. I think it's something that transcends the medium and that it stands toe to toe with the best movies and tv shows.

It's easy to see why HBO have developed it into one and throughout this video I'm gonna be discussing why the game's ending is something that has stuck with me since it first released all the way back in 2013. It's a game that I've completed multiple times and everytime there's a remaster or remake it's something I pick up day one just so I can go back to it.

Though overall the gameplay is pretty straight forward, what really elevates the Last Of Us is it's character development and story. Over the shoulder third person survival horror games had become a staple of the industry after the release of Resident Evil 4 and though the Last Of Us doesn't really break the mould when it comes to that, the characters go above and beyond to elevate the entire experience.

The ending is no different and what really pushes it is the fact that very few words are spoken between the characters but you can see instantly what's going on beneath the surface. Performance capture in video games is something that's came a long way over the last couple of decades and we've pretty much watched games evolve from 2D sprites to living breathing people who can portay their deepest thoughts in their expressions and body language.

The Last Of Us capitalises on this massively and Naughty Dog arguably helped to pioneer the cinematic experience in video games.

Games have always been criticised for their storytelling but here was a studio that put that above all else and the game excels because of it. Whenever I've talked about the ending of the Last Of Us I've always referred to it as being The Godfather of gaming. Now what I mean by that is that it is very similar to the ending of another of my favourites, The Godfather.

In that we see Michael Corleone descend to new depths and he has his sisters husband killed for betraying the family. His girlfriend Kay goes to him and after Michaels sister barges in and reveals the truth Michael lies about it in order to not destroy the image Kay has of him.

The toughest part that I think of is what if he did let Ellie be killed and they weren’t able to make a cure? We look at what he did as bad because we assume they would have definitely made a cure. How differently would we look at it if we knew for a fact that a cure would have failed?

You don't mention some of the documents you can find while rescuing Ellie that explain that there have been other immune people who underwent the surgery but didn't lead to a cure so odds are not good that Ellie's death will actually lead to anything. Telling her the truth, she may return and be willing to die no matter what the odds.

@tl gmc Yeah, to me it wasn't even a question about whether my Joel would kill to protect Ellie but "Who's next?". And knowing she'd sacrifice herself no matter the odds made lying a no-brainer too.

@Victory Marlene was initially opposed to the idea of killing Ellie. The doctor finds out that he will have to kill Ellie while she is unconscious and tells it to Marlene. Marlene remarks how they can't make that choice for her and tries to bargain for alternatives. After realizing there are none she decides it's best to kill Ellie and tell Joel.

The ending scene kind of reminded me of the scene at Tommy's power plant where Joel tried to get Tommy to take Ellie to the Fireflies. Ellie was very upset at being abandoned by Joel. Joel ultimately made the decision to escort Ellie himself because he could see how hurt she was at being handed over. And he sacrificed his own fear of losing/failing to protect Ellie (as he had failed to protect his daughter and Tess-at least in his own perception) in order to put Ellie's feelings first. The ending was a little in reverse. Ellie knew how much he needed to keep her safe and so she forgave him for lying about killing the Fireflies at the hospital.

Thank you for pointing out when Joel looks at and absentmindedly touches his watch at the end. I've watched a lot of videos on these 2 games, but no one ever mentions it. I always thought they were brilliant ways to show he was thinking about Sarah, especially that last scene when HE doesn't even seem to realize it. Great video as usual.

@Hololo the whole idea of introducing Abby as the person who kills Joel and then forcing the player to play as her is beyond brilliant and bold story telling that I don’t think anyone can argue was not innovative and jarring. The thing that makes part 2 better than part 1 is that it really makes you deliberately feel uncomfortable and truly drives home the message about how we truly do not understand other people and do not account for those that we affect by our actions. That revenge is not a just cause but a product of not properly processing grief and trauma. How we truly understand that our “heros” we’ve come to love in part 1 are not truly heros or really necessarily good people. It really gets you to think about humanity and there really is no good or evil. It’s v easy to get attached to characters and favor them throughout. The fact people got so mad and upset about having you play as Abby truly means that a lot of people really did not understand the story they were telling. Which is sad because the story is so well told and a fucking masterpiece through to the very end of part 2.

@Rockview Spoilers: I think their execution was horrible personally. Abby would have been a far better character I would sympathize for if she wasnt first introduced killing a fan favorite character we grew to love. First impressions matter, and how they introduced Abby was horrendous. I didn't like how they added Abby, had her kill a fan favorite, and then used cheap gimmicks to make us like her. If we saw her journey first, her pain and suffering and hatred and near the end were confronted with Joel and her killing him, I think it would be far more impactful, as we all knew Joel was not an angel and would be able to get to understand abby and know her far better. The story felt out of order, and there were many characters we never got to truly enjoy nor care for. Dina was one who I personally couldnt get attached too since she seemed sorta generic and was by no means an emphasis, and the cheap gimmicks of "you killed a pregnant person" sorta is a very low and cheap emotional tug.

Yes I completely agree how you see Joel’s motivation! He was not going to let anyone hurt or kill another daughter figure in his life. He believed he was doing the right thing for Ellie. Marlene felt she was doing the right thing for mankind… sadly neither one asked Ellie what she felt was the right thing to do for herself. Should have left the choice up to her.
Frostwolf103
Frostwolf103 2 aylar önce
I think Ellie decided to side with Joel on his side of story that even that Joel lied, her bullshit-meter is on point that this is a lie to protect Ellie from the Fireflies, that she meet the end of seven stages of grief: acceptance. She found new purpose of life thanks to Joel. Now she will carry the torch passed by Joel.

Disagree. I felt like that’s the ending they wanted from the beginning and adding up all the bullet points you could argue he would do that. But when it happened I felt a twinge in the back of my mind that it wasn’t true to the character that I had journeyed with. Not that Stephen king is always right but he says never have a character do something they wouldn’t do. And that’s exactly how it felt to me.

I don't understand anyone arguing Joel's final actions being morally grey. The Fireflies didn't even know their "solution" would work. He did nothing wrong. Now, it certainly felt wrong - or, at least, complicated - but the truth is, there's no right answer in the question that gets posed. It's simply, murder a child on a gamble or don't murder a child on a gamble. Pretty simple.

It’s been said by “some”Psychologists” when it comes to looking in your eyes means something. Well I know 1000% that if someone looks me in the eye and says they’re not lying. You believe them. It’s other things you look for when lying. Shaking, sweating, talking fast, saying the same things over and over, not confident, and theres more etc. Only a few people are actually trained to truly know this. Many might say that’s common sense of course, yet many don’t know how hard it is to see that stuff. Most truly don’t know, they think they do. It’s people with experience that truly know, not some Psychologist that read it in a book. Most of them are great but it’s experience not books that shows you this. Like many think being a TRvidr is easy, it’s not. Yet looking someone in the eyes takes guts and usually true. I’m a 20yr Army Intelligence Agent so from experience that’s what I think. Don’t get me wrong, I REALLY like Paul. So this isn’t me going at him, he’s my favorite TRvidr. Also maybe one of the only times I’ve disagreed. Yet it’s okay to disagree, you’re still the man Paul. He could curse me out and tell puns to me and I’d still appreciate the guy. I appreciate people that can bust balls, not get offended, and Paul is great at that haha Cheers. I apologize this is so long I just also have experience with this stuff. It’s just my opinion and hell who knows, I could be wrong. 😊

I feel like the beauty of that ending was the fact that it was left open-ended. Open to interpret, and no narrative being shoved down our throats like in part 2. The ending makes for discussion, though evoking theories, no right or wrong ect. Part two pretty much beat the message of 'revenge bad, forgiving good' into us where it does not leave for much exploration of any ideas. The idea is singular, where in part one the ideas leave for more flexibility like the world they live in, it's morally ambiguous.

The ending of the original TLOU was a flawed ending IF it was intended to be stand-alone. Well done, perhaps, but incomplete. It only can be called "perfect" when it is known to be the end of the first part of a continuing story. Likewise, the ending of TLOU 2 (not mentioning the disagreeable story choices) was horrible, IF Part 2 was going to be the end of the story, as we were all led to believe. Not only incomplete but preachy and woke. IF they carry on to finish the story with TLOU 3, then and only then can I accept the ending of Part 2 as depicting only that moment in a longer story. And only then will I tolerate the story choices. And only then will I actually play Part 2.

I just burrowed TLOU 2 but I really don't feel like playing it, why? Because It's a HUGE let down. At first I thought part2 was a really good Idea and I really put much Hype to it like it's some kind of life changing situation for me, then it came, and the Creator of the story itself used the main Character as a Shock Value for the story just to spice things up. I just lost all Hype and completely abandoned all that Passion and I just come to realization that Part 1 is the Perfect Ending. Part 2 us just... MEH

and this is why the "weak" Joel on part 2 exists. Joel's attachment for Ellie really grew as he never get a chance to grow with Sarah. thus making his character more grounded as humanly as possible on part 2. making him to trust a random Stanger on the road.

What makes the ending a masterpiece is that the story does not judge Joel for his actions. That's up to the player to interpret. What makes TLOU 2 frustrating is that it now does judge him. Harshly. And it leaves no room for other opinions. Storytelling-wise, it's the difference between being nuanced vs being blunt.

@Poett ! you gotta remember joel softened up, i think thats what they were going for. quick deaths because...well thats real life. not everyone goes out in a blazing glory, death is quick and gets you when you least expect it. thats what i loved about part 2. it felt raw and realistic. it showed that anyone could die just like that, just like in real life. i agree that maybe Joel couldve been an exception to the quick deaths since his death means the most if all the characters. but again, its real

@NUGGIE it’s not the fact that he died. It’s HOW he died. His death felt every rushed and last minute. And didn’t feel realistic to his character at all. I’m not saying that he deserved a dramatic warriors death in which he saves Ellie or some bullshit like that. But at least a death that made sense and just didn’t feel like a sequence to move the story forward.

Joel is murdered...there...it killed me too and Last Of Us 2 was irrelevant.

This is the true ending for The Last Of Us. Excited for The Last Of Us Show and hope they improve The Last Of Us Part II Like removing Abby And Not Killing Joel.

The ending was in no way perfect. There's no way Joel should have escaped from the facility. He should have been shot with Ellie in his arms. Reflecting when his daughter was shot except this time, she lives, and he dies.
