Here in the Kurzgesagt labs we test very important ideas to see what happens when you blow things up or play with black holes. Many of you suggested that we look into an idea that sounds reasonable: Shooting nuclear waste into space. It is one of those concepts that seems like an easy fix for one of the main problems with nuclear energy. But it turns out this idea is not just bad but horribly bad and it gets worse the longer you think about it.

Isn't it fantastic how a group of people can sit in a room, do obscure research for hundreds of hours, then present a thesis in an animated format for us all to enjoy. This is one of the best channels on the internet.

Some hundred years ago people thought it's a good idea to throw waste into oceans since they're so huge and surely that won't be a problem. Got a similar vibe from this idea

You know what’s way easier than using rockets for dumping? Digging a hole in uninhabitable land (200 meters or so) and burying the waste there
Shooter Face123

I think he knows because he just watched the video that tells why nuclear waste shouldn’t be blasted into space and also included that burying them underground would be ideal.
Mystery User
Mystery User 9 aylar önce
@bossdunkz Scientifically speaking, it is the best solution. The capsules take thousands of years to decay along with the radioactive waste, meaning by the time the capsule is gone, the radioactive waste will no longer be radioactive. Basically just inert metal deposits in the middle of nowhere. Additionally, being buried means that none of its radiation will ever reach the surface or anything. Most radiation cannot penetrate solid materials (solar radiation travels through vacuum for this reason), but gamma rays can because they’re so small and require about one meter of concrete to stop their penetration. Being 200 meters to 1KM deep in the Earth itself means it’s extremely well insulated. As the contents are radioactive, we cannot risk it getting close to any ground water supplies or mineable materials. Geologists can determine what land has no such obstacles, provided it is also uninhabitable for nuclear burial and the location is documented so that no unsuspecting Geologists accidentally digs one up.

I love how professional these videos are. They have the bibliography linked to credit the sources of information. It is exceptionally detailed. You can just tell that these people spend so much time doing these videos. From the first website. To the last detail in the editing and animating process, to the legend who voices over this channel. You can tell that the people behind this TRvid channel work very hard. And care about what they are doing a lot. It is reflected in your work, your passion for knowledge. And to share that knowledge. I hope to be like these people one day. Thankyou for teaching me all these years. For helping me understand the fundamentals of chemistry, physics. Just science. You are the reason i am going to pass my classes this year. The motivation. Regards, Wil

Yeah, why even calculate the rocket physics of blasting it into outer space when you’re not going to even bother explaining how simple it is to bury it in uninhabitable land anyways?
Kav
Kav 9 aylar önce
@Mystery User because this video was about shooting nuclear waste into space, not the best ways to deal with it
Mystery User
Mystery User 9 aylar önce
@Kav Except it is, because the assumption here is that shooting it into space is a means of disposal. Why not talk about how it is correctly disposed of? Many newer reactors can even just recycle waste into more energy
The Therran Native
The Therran Native 9 aylar önce
@Mystery User That would probably require a whole new video on how it would be done and why it's safe. A lot of people would look at "put it underground" and become seriously worried about contaminating groundwater and the like. Kurzgesagt has always been very careful to explain the risks and lack of risks of things. A passing comment about the solution just isn't their style.
Mystery User
Mystery User 9 aylar önce
@The Therran Native There is no concern for ground water when it’s buried in uninhabitable land (is there ground water for it to contaminate? No) and in a capsule that will take literally thousands of years before leakage is even possible (rarer than lightning strike). This is all surface level information on how nuclear waste is disposed of. If the video’s topic is disposal, why focus so much on rockets and never actually get into how it’s done?

Why shoot it into space when you can just bury it in uninhabitable land? Goes in a capsule, capsule goes underground about 200-1,000 meters and the radiation never gets out of its grave

@Mystery User People have been doing this but they have been doing it above ground in giant tombs. It also would make sense because even though that is probably a lot of space to use for waste there's only so nuch uranium on earth.

This is a wonderfully clear way of showing how we are our own worst enemy. Not because of the subject matter, but because of the way it points out the way humans solve problems. We see what we want to see. And we definitely don't want a great idea smothered by "overthinking", so.... "don't worry, we'll figure it out before anything bad happens."
Andrew Williams
Andrew Williams 5 aylar önce
Pressure is the great motivator for humans, and that's by biological necessity. It's not efficient for us to focus time and energy on a problem that's far away or nebulous and intangible, when we have things like food and shelter to prioritise. That's also why we now have wokeism, climate alarmism, BLM, MeToo, and so on, that are so rampant... mainly imaginary, nebulous, or insignificant problems to overcome, because people have their necessities provided for and don't have kids or proper jobs, so they can expend effort on dumb or nonexistent things.

Whatsoever! If anyone analyse History then its easy to realise that there isn't a SINGLE civilization in human History which hasn't been destroyed / punished /annihilated for their disobedience and sins. Be it - Babylonian, Mesopotamian, Indus Valley civilization, Persian, Roman, Assyrian, etc. etc. However, there could be people who think that this Technologically Advanced Modern Civilization is an exception. We all should wait and see! This is the order of events according to my limited knowledge & understanding :- Collapse of Petro-dollar, Paper monetary system [(cause of WW3) many geo-political conflicts and situations are side reasons /smoke and mirrors] ~ 80% - 90% expected to die ~ Many years of great oppression & injustice, more than even now (probably 7) ~ lsraeI ruling state of the World (obvious) ~ Emergence of Mahdi (r.a.) - A Guided & Just ruler ~ Peace & Prosperity for a while ~ Coming of Dajjal/Antíchrist (their much awaited one-eyed Messiah) in Human form (live for 37 days & will do many miracles & many things) ~ coming of Eesa/Jesus (p.b.u.h.) & killing Dajjal ~ Peace for many years (some say 8-9 years & some 40) ~ Coming of Yajuj and Majuj (a corrupt ancient tribe) in large numbers & much violence & killing ~ Their destruction from an infection / disease on their neck by Allah s.w.t. ~ Peaceful death of all the believers from a breeze from Yemen ~ Destruction of the Kaaba 🕋 (in Mecca, Saudi Arabia) brick to brick by Dhul suwaq qatain (a person with short legs) ~ Dwelling of only Disbelievers and Criminals on Earth ~ The Earth will be cursed coz there will be no one to say La ilaha il Allah (There's no God except Allah) ~ Trembling of Mountains & shaking of the Earth (physical destruction of the World and the Universe). We have been already warned about it! And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed. [Chapter 17 Isra (The Night Journey) : 58] 'That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah";- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not.' One of our many "thought experiment" exercises we did in my college astrophysics classes was, what kind of rail gun would we need to launch waste into the sun. We actually worked out this was theoretically possible (even taking into account the Earth's orbital speed, if you time and aim the rail gun opposite the earth's rotational motion) The size of the rail gun is also theoretically possible, and expensive, but the cost to fire the gun was miniscule to the idea of a rocket for each payload.

@jhvmhgkgkgvkgvlhb true, but that has little baring of the quality of individual creators on YT. And I would be shocked if paying for premium reduced the amount of data YT harvests from a user. So that is basically the fundamental compromise we make when we use internet services these days.

There was a project that seemed pretty promising. The used up fuel still has a lot of energy in it, just not enough for the big reactors. So... how about we use them in small ones? Small reactors by each city, using used up nuclear fuel to make heat for the city. That would make almost free heat for everybody around, especially during winter, and would ensure the fuel is safely dealt with. After a certain time it would lose even what little energy it had and it would be way safer to deal with. I really liked that idea.

This is entirely predicated on launching with rockets. I seem to remember many videos on this channel referencing other methods to launch things into space (e.g. skyhook).

If you have ever watched the 1970s Sci-fi series "Space 1999", the premis was to store nuclear waste on the far side of the moon, out of sight and out of mind. But the amount stored in Waste Disposal Area #2 was so great, it chain reacted and blasted the Moon away from Earth, taking the 320 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha into a universe spanning adventure.

I thought of firing this stuff into the sun awhile back and I still think it could work. The sun is a gravity well and with careful calculation a terminal track could be established. At least try it with a very light load and see if it works.

Here in Germany we do something called "Schrottwichteln" around Christmas time in schools or at work. It works as it follows: You get a random partner to whom you have to make a usually not well thought out present. So it roughly translates to "Garbage Presents". Since in the past it worked out for me with old motor oil or car battaries, I am really looking forward to my new job in a nuclear power plant...

Wouldn't mass drivers be a viable alternative to rockets, vastly reducing the hypothetical cost? And if so, would it be possible to fine tune them to put the waste into a suitably undesirable location (like mercury or a foreign moon) or just out of the solar system entirely? If this isn't viable, why not?
Mystery User
Mystery User 9 aylar önce
A lead capsule and hole in the ground on some uninhabitable land would also reduce the cost and need to involve space in a simple process

Earth has high gravity and dense atmosphere, so kinetic energy loss will be huge, and a bigger railgun is needed. On the Moon and moons this is much feasible though, maybe after 100 years the jovian moon colony is powered by fission power and nuclear waste is yeeted directly into Jupiter by a railgun
Naberville3
Naberville3 9 aylar önce
@Mystery User doesn't even need to be "uninhabitable" if it's deep enough

Using a mass driver from earth is very impractical due to the atmosphere. A practical byproduct of rockets is that they start slowly in the thick part of the atmosphere and go faster as the pressure goes down. A mass driver would do the opposite and start out fast in the thick part of the atmosphere, which causes enormous heating. So, a lot of the payload would have to be heat shielding. I addition, the velocity lost due to the atmosphere means you still need a rocket stage at the end (like SpinLaunch is planning), or start out at impractically high speeds with much higher heating. For spacecraft reentry it works out so that if you 2x the speed, the heat energy goes up 8x. But that's coming in from thin to thick atmosphere, and it might be even worse if starting in the thick part. A mass driver solution might work from the moon, but then you still need rockets to get stuff to the moon in the first place (in addition to all the rockets required for constructing the mass driver and supporting infrastructure).

It's not as great as you think. I remember them talking about the possible ends of the universe, like the big crunch vs big freeze and big rip, and at the end, they actually said they CHOOSE to believe in an infinite series of big crunches and big bangs in an eternal cycle because they considered it to be the most "uplifting". That is antithetical to science, to believe something without evidence because it is the thing you most wish was true. In fact, we have a word for that, it's called religion.

It's cool that they explain this, the first and foremost issue is the failure rate of rockets, if a rocket that was filled with nuclear waste explodes in transit, it would be akin to a dirty bomb.

I’ve been watching some of your videos for a while ( mostly the terraforming ones ) and I remember you did one on dropping nuclear bombs on Mars to terraform it. There's a middle ground between shooting it randomly into space and shooting it at something. You can park it all in a specific orbit and grow a little planet of nuclear waste over time in a predefined area. Cheap, accessible nuclear energy can also bring down the cost of creating rockets. You will want to fix the "Rockets go brrrr" problem, though.

I read about a new technique, a company in CA developed a miniature tunnel boring machine that can create a 3 ft wide concrete lined tunnel that can go down thousands of feet. Far below any water table or natural resources. This can be set up wherever the reactor is so there is no transportation of dangerous materials. Once it has reached the desired depth it goes horizontal and keeps going another few thousands feet. Creating a 3 mile long concrete lined tunnel. Radioactive material can be sealed in cases, inserted into the tunnel and pushed to the bottom, then the next and the next and then filled in with concrete. Its so far down even if a case is breached the radiation can't do any harm. Then another tunnel can be dug right next to that one and when he goes horizontal it goes in another direction, repeat as many times as necessary. I believe this may be the best method of dealing with radioactive waste.

The Appalachian Entertainer
I worked at a coal power plant, with every modern bell and whistle, and heres the fact, the ash is caught through filters, with almost no escapees, and sent into a silo, to be mixed with limestone and water, which reduces its danger, and then, after it becomes this slurry, it is dried and shipped out for use in drywall, sheetrock, and particle board! What ash that does escape still doesn’t truly escape as it is shot into those big stacks, mixed with the limestone and water, and then blasted out of the top. Its entire journey through the stack is heavily filtered, so the smoke, or rather steam, is white, and has almost no trace of the ash that is left. The CO2 emissions as well are handled by the stack, as it is transferred from CO2 to O2 by the plentiful filters located all the way through the duct work in the entire plant.

I think what people mean by sending waste into space is sending it to deep space, not low earth orbit; which would be really really really stupid since the orbit could degrade and then crash into a populated area.

What if you sent it to Jupiter? You wouldn't have to cancel out the orbit and if it missed it would just orbit around Jupiter instead. Probably the best option if you figured out how safely get it into space.
