@Demonchilde666 Nah, it was in the beginning of a movie, they were in a containment lab opening some package that had a doll in it, he moved the doll's arm and it started spraying something out the doll's mouth at them. Then the ventilators wouldn't turn on and the stuff was eating through their suits. Can't remember the movie though...

33:22 part of me wonders if the lack of "full opacity" is actually due to the roughness of the surface of the wood. like headlights that have gone hazy, it's not that the plastic isn't clear anymore it's just surface scratches. So if you've got some really fine sandpaper lying around maybe give it a scrub with that and see if it gets smoother, and see if the opacity improves even further.

Hey, hydrogen peroxide expert here, y'all were so close with snotty! Take what you learned with the toluene substitute, swap the alcohol for that in a similar way to cleaning with alcohol and then move on to the resin before the toluene fully evaporates and I think you'll really be there! Also, I think the sanding helped not only because it's thinner but because the surface finish makes a big difference both in the chemical interaction and the light refraction (being able to see through it)

I love the videos on this channel. Katelyn's editing, the passion they put into their projects, the pranks and just general entertainment of how well they interact with each other makes every video highly entertaining, regardless of the project - home improvements, DIY vs Buy, Resin, Art, Woodworking etc. Even tho they make mistakes sometimes like not reading instructions or levelling their projects, it's clear they put a lot of thought into preparing for each project and trying to give it the best chance of success. Evan and Katelyn are such passionate and efficient people, I wish there was a way they could achieve these videos with even more efficiency (and less stress) to get as many videos as possible; I know they're busy all the time with streaming, podcasts, searching for a house now etc so I'm glad they still have so much passion and dedications for all their projects, even ones like this where the end result is basically a piece of paper turned into a coaster.

I think there is a resin called stabilizing resin made to infuse into materials. Peter Brown used it a few times to make brittle materials like driftwood turnable on his lathe.
Gordon Beck
Gordon Beck 2 yıl önce
Maybe the resin's refractive index is too different from the treated wood so the light doesn't go straight through as nicely. So maybe try to find a combination of wood and resin with a similar index. Also different kinds of woods other than balsa might be worth a try, even though this should be the safest bet because of the low density. I'd try the different types of tissue from a tree as well. It should be easier for the resin to penetrate the layers that usually transport water and nutrients (like the phloem for example). Maybe you have to use a few different solvents. I'll try to find what I used in the lab to draw out the colour in our experiments on tissue layers. Surely there are some tricks to make sure the solvents and bleaching agents circulate through the wood better. A lot of "if"s and "maybe"s but you have to start somewhere lol

a tip for pouring stuff out of annoyingly shaped cannisters, have the hole be on top and start pouring from there instead of having the hole be lower than the majority of the liquid. this allows air to move freely so no gulping happens and it can help in the liquid coming straight out of the can instead of following along the side of it and dripping off from the bottom. Hopefully this message is understandable XD

You should try different wood types, since the lignin content varies between them. Also, I think if you let the wood dry, it will shrink, and lose transparency. Maybe directly dunk the piece from xylene to resin, and then to vacuum? And a thing about laboratory safety: there is a reason why laboratories use glass containers (pyrex if there is heat involved) - many chemicals will go through plastics.
MonkeyShaman
MonkeyShaman 2 yıl önce
Try letting it soak in boat laquer for however long you think you'll need. It won't set until its aerated. You very likely are also trapping huge (relatively amounts of water in the wood too so you may want to ensure its both dried and heated (the latter while letting it degas)

You should make a silencer for the pressure pot out of resin. What you really want is just a fitting embedded in the end of chamber with alternating baffle plates with holes in them and some sort of packing (fiberglass, or synthetic stuffing). The goal is basically to slow the air and spread it from a small diameter focused stream to a larger diameter outlet in multiple steps and absorbing as much of that sound energy into the heavier walls of the silencer.

If I recall, the experiments were performed using wood that was cut across the grain. Thus allowing the chemicals to enter the straw-like tubes of the open end grain. This also explains why the wood in the other videos were so fragile, especially after the multiple chemical washings breaking down the cellular structure.

im pretty sure that the reason your wood wasnt perfectly clear is that fact that it was cut WITH the grain instead of AGAINST the grain. It would help the chemicals and resin penetrate much easier and give you a better result.

Leah Groess
Leah Groess 2 yıl önce
I think this is a common "error" with the other clear wood videos. Cutting against the grain results in a pretty brittle piece, the wood grain having long connection points is one of the things that gives it stability. It's a difficult call to make, along with the thickness of the wood.
Piccianify
Piccianify 2 yıl önce
I'm pretty sure Nilered tested that in his video as well and it did work better, but was more fragile/ pretty much dissolved after the bleaching...? I'd think the addition of resin might make it durable enough for that, if they get it in the resin before it breaks down too much. I also think a thinner resin, like maybe a stabilizing resin might work better in actually getting in the wood grain?

But saying that you "show them off" when talking about your girlfriends kinda makes it seem like your objectifying them (or being a bit sexist, maybe unknowingly), also having multiple girlfriends doesn't make you cool, at least in my opinion.(I have no issue with people having multiple partners, unless they don't know that you have multiple partners.) Ok hear me out, with the coasters (failed experiments) you should cover them in resin and do some resin art on them! I also have an idea where you might have seen this floating around, but people get a canvas and cover it in paint, then put a plastic bag over it and put catnip on the bag. The cat then smudges around the paint to creat art, maybe you could do that with resin and THE SUPERVISOR :3 then you would have a Joob original coaster :D

Love your videos! I want to get into doing resin but I just found out many aren't eco friendly! Could you experiment between eco friendly and non eco friendly resins?

You guys are taking more precaution with NaOH and hydrogen peroxide than we did at school with 90% sulphuric acid and nitrogen fumes I still dont regret taking extra precautions myself because i didn't feel like potentially breathing in warm to hot nitrogen oxides So it is really amazing to see that you guys do actually take a lot of precaution with the chemicals. Better being too prepared than too little!

Evan: "There's no such thing as overkill when it comes to safety!" Also Evan: *wearing shorts while handling dangerous chemicals and doesn't read warnings on other dangerous chemicals* Edit: oh, wow. This got more likes than I expected. Thanks!

Button the robes too maybe? Probably a good rule for all robes: bath, hospital, science, no good can come from an open robe.

@Seth Trey Exactly!! I was so frustrated to see them talking about wearing a robe but not button it up!

Have you guys ever tried Cactus Juice stabilizing resin? I think that stuff is meant to absorb into wood super easy!

I've definitely had moments like that where I can't smell something I know I should be able to and am worried I'm either broken in that regard, or have become desensitized to it. Either case being scary, as smell can be an early indicator of danger.

Kinda like if you’re smelling burnt toast and youre not near a toaster at all can indicate that you’re having a seizure

Your cuts were with the grain leaving long tubes to fill side to side. Try it with cross the grain cuts so the tubes are only the thickness of the wood top to bottom of the slice. it makes a huge difference in the anatomy of the wood and the way its designed to carry fluid in sealed paths.

So my thoughts would be - have you tried stabilising resin?

From the final reveal, it looks like the wood was cut the wrong way... but great video guys! It was enjoyable watching the process.

As a chemist I had a serious heart-attack when you guys said toluene and several small ones watching you handle the xylene. Glad you didn't hurt yourselves.

Watching people pour organic solvents in plastic containers is always fun.

@Exceptional User also mixing the epoxy with the ethanol without checking with the manufacturer first. Also doing the 'safe' step evaporation wise, the hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide in a well ventilated area, but then taking that actually dangerous organic solvent inside. And then there's sealing the container with the easily evaporated solvent inside. Good way to suddenly find your container exploded if the temperature rises just a tiny bit.

In my line of work, cancer rates used to be pretty high. What I found out later is that in the past (around the same time that cancer rates were noticed) they would coat their arms in toluene based glue solvents to cool themselves off in the summer, because it evaporated so quickly. Combined with a general lack of safety around these chemicals, yea it makes sense that people were getting cancer.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, just an ex biochem lab prep tech/hazmat certified biochem engineering student (genuinely not like a brag or self agrandisement if it sounded like it was) but wouldn't toluene be safer than comparable acetone concentrations and volumes (and handling) Or is it significantly more volatile than acetone and thusly more dangerous despite being less toxic? Again genuinely asking since I'm less educated
