When I was 10 years old or so (1954) I asked my dad, who was a navy veteran, why did we win the war ? His reply was, and I paraphrase, "Charlie, we could build weapons faster than they could destroy them." His answer was so perfect for a 10 year old mind. But as I watch these excellent videos, I see the horrible carnage that his explanation could not include for one so young.

@Joseph Heselberger Then you would have been a fool! While Russia would have easily eventually rolled over Germany, the USA's ability to destroy Germany's logistics would have still proved decisive. The Germans could not even knock out the UK when it would have made it very difficult for the USA to have an impact on the war. If the war kept going and Germany was doing well, the Germans would received the US's first 2 bombs instead of Japan. Remember, the US was also fighting a 2 front war!

The King Tiger is such an amazing looking and deadly tank. Good thing for the allies that only very few were produced due to it's late development. Most we're encounter in and around Berlin during the last stages of the war. It was deployed as an upgrade to the already powerful Tiger 1

I don't like or watch this channel but I was driven to watch this one episode because of how important this battle was to my life. My father, an American infantryman in the Battle of the Bulge, was struck in the head by a fragment from one of these German tank shells that hit near him. His helmet saved his life, but the injury put him in the hospital with a severe concussion and kept him off the front lines for the rest of the battle and the war. Of course, I wouldn't be here if that tank shell had killed my dad or if he wasn't knocked out of action, kept fighting on the front lines and became one of the 19,000 American fatalities in that bloodbath. However, that trauma changed his life, and as a result, the life of his wife and his 7 kids. Although it wasn't recognized as a mental illness at the time, my father suffered from PTSD for the rest of his life, and we suffered through our childhoods as a result. Examples of how that trauma consumed him: the only movies he ever watched on TV or took us to see were WWII movies, the great majority in the European theater of the war; he collected so many WWII books, he ended up with the largest collection in the whole state - even more than any library; he brought back a complete German infantry uniform and an SS officer uniform and always wore one of them to costume parties. That last one in particular really freaked us out because we had seen so many films about the horrors of the Nazi's, especially the SS! Seeing your father, 6 foot 6 inches tall, 240 pounds of muscle, in one of those black SS uniforms, including the SS hat and boots, is a memory that doesn't fade away with time - terrifying! My poor mother had to accompany him to those parties. I have watched a few vids and films about the Battle of the Bulge to help me try to understand my father and the attitudes and behaviors he passed down to me and my siblings. [This channel is on my blacklist because I am very irritated by how they backtrack and repeat so much after each point where they had a commercial break. This and other things feel like they add unnecessary length to their shows to fill the time slot - these could be well done in just 30 min. In addition, they rely too much on animation and not enough on historical footage.]

Bit of info- when you hear about Sherman guns penetrating the frontal armor of Tigers, it’s the new Shermans with the 76mm guns delivered in early 1944 that could do that. Not all Shermans had those guns- all the older ones had 75mm guns which could not penetrate Tigers’ frontal armor.
floridahacker
floridahacker 2 gün önce
@Damo actually, no. Not only was the Firefly an exclusively UK-designed and UK-utilized tank, but the earliest American 76mm Sherman guns were first designed and trialed a couple of years earlier than the Firefly, so the former was not based on the latter which came afterward. Obviously though, these tanks were all technically Shermans.

The Battle of the Bulge was as devastating on German ground equipment as their operation Bodenplatte was to their Airforce. It were pretty much sending large amount of equipment down the drain, while the goal of those operations would've never been a reality even if they achieved their goals in those operations. It was simply so late in the war the allies would never surrender and they had a massive surplus of equipment to replace their losses, while Germany couldn't. The only difference it would make in the end of the day was how much the Soviets were to get of Europe after the war.

24:02 This Tiger does not have the original 88mm gun. Its barrel was damaged, it was cut off and replaced with the 75mm barrel from damaged Panther tank. That's why it's so disproportionately short and narrow and doesn't look like 88mm.

The British Sherman Firefly Varriant fitted with a more powerful 3-inch (76.2 mm) calibre British 17-pounder anti-tank gun as its main weapon could stop a Tigar or Panzer IV, but only 600 Shermans (as far as I know) were converted.
Tom Cruise Missile
Tom Cruise Missile 2 aylar önce
Just remember, the Sherman's reputation as a death trap is a quite embellished. First, when attacking, 3-1 losses are EXPECTED. Not only that, but consider how many survivors of wrecked Sherman's you seem. The tank had flaws, buy the crew survivability was excellent.

@Hillsane Yeah good point. The Grant was a big improvement on what they had and and the Sherman was an improvement again.
Hillsane
Hillsane Gün önce
@Lester Buckman Sorry, I will take Rommel over your assessment for obvious reasons! I have found a quote by a German tanker after receiving the up armored Panzer 4 with the HV 75mm gun. We had the best tank there, even better than the Sherman! So, he must of thought that until that tank, the Sherman was the best tank in the desert! The Brits were the ones using Sherman before the long barrel Panzer 4. I cited their high regard for the tank. Also, the Americans that used Sherman thought they had a good tank but were aware of the new 4s prowess, but the Americans tactics were absurd in their first use of tanks in the desert. I did not find exact crew quotes or comments, but I did find US crew surveys by Army Ordinance and the tank was liked before Europe. Why don't you provide some American crews in N. Africa talking about how bad the Sherman was?

By '44 the Germans ran out of tungsten. The older tanks had superior steel, the later models had inferior steel. Normally German steel was almost impenetrable with normal size guns. It made the Tigers so dangerous. The Allies did not have that problem.

By 1944 on the western front, it was no longer even a fair fight...The allies had total air supremacy and movement by any German units (armored or not) meant near instant death from the sky. The Germans couldn't move their forces around on the battle field to react to the Allied movements. the war was already a fait accompli at that point.

Ignoring, obviously, facts: Shermans had a three-to-one kill ratio against all German tanks. Documented. Sure, the Sherman would lose in a head to head battle. But... They could travel so much faster, move turrets so much faster, and were so much more reliable. German tanks could rarely go a hundred km without a major breakdown, usually the ZF ransmission. Shermans which came ashore at the Atlantic drove right to Berlin and Prague. The versions with the 5-bank Chrysler engines were virtually unstoppable.

Chrisler made the Sherman tank and in 1941 the US economy had to make a huge shift. America had about 400 tanks as they entered the war. Chrysler made cars and had to retool at an amazing speed to catch up with the Germans so they were on a steep learning curve. Whereas they were not the perfect tank thousands and thousands were produced and distributed to all the allied armies so it was not a matter of the lowest bidder but a matter of overwhelming industrial production and in the end, Germany could not keep up.

Would have been a very good documentary indeed had the sound quality been better, but it was awful, particularly when the Germans were being translated. So I used subtitles, which were also bad, but gave me a clue what was being said. However, I did enjoy watching this. Glad I wasn't there, both sides were so brave!
Snookynibbles tocoloeddie
That Tiger 2 was a beast. It’s upgunned 88 mm main gun @ 3,200 fps muzzle velocity outdid the Tiger I by 200 fps. The Pershing’s 90 mm was good for 2,800 fps. And then the USA went crazy and created a handful of mostly impractical “Super Pershing” tanks at the very end of the war. The barrels on these prototype tanks were ridiculously long to support the upgunned 90 mm shell that fired to a sizzling 3,800 fps...quite a bit faster than the Tiger 2.

The noise was too loud. It completely over bears the oratory of the survivors in too many places. Historically this fight would have been prevented had ONE ego maniac i.e George Patton been ignored on the issue of final development of the Pershing tank prior to the Normandy invasion or at bare minimum the up gunning of the Shermans to the high velocity 76mm. That would have saved thousands of American lives.

The book is a showcase of modern reenactors bedecked in authentic SS militaria…. Well now you know. ;)

+@Didier Drogba Nope! T-26 did not see it,s debut until 3 weeks before war in Europe ended. Sherman M4A3 used a very high octane fuel. M4A2 with 76mm gun that used diesel fuel that was used by U.S. Marines and Soviets stood much better chance. M-36 Jackson had to get to medium range. To have a good chance. M-10 was a joke. British 17 pounder Sherman had to get to medium range. If a big cat saw you first you were dead. At long or short range. Sherman weighed 32 tons. JS-2 Stalin weighed 45 tons with 122mm gun. Heaviest allied tank of the war. Heavy by Soviet standards. Medium by German standards. 45 tons. Same as Panther A-G. Panther could carry 75 shells. Stalin could only carry 28. Sherman was more of an infantry tank. Not a bust through tank.

I agree... the sound effects track is too high and overpowers the voiceover. It's frustrating because the information is very well explained. And the animations are really good too for a documentary. I believe there is software that can process out (up to a certain level) the effects and the voice, and then it can be re-leveled correctly.

@Ingemar Oskar I remember years ago trying to watch this series on TV. Same mess - couldn't hear what was being said because of the background noise. There were ads every five minutes, and when the program did restart, they repeated a lot of what had had already been shown. I haven't watched TV at all in over ten years and these History Channel shows were one of the reasons - to much investment of time for too little return.

" Most German commanders did not trust any messages send by wire or Ultra" nevertheless..... they, pretty much, relied on it almost 100‰ ; many German offensives were, effectively, 'neutralised' b'cs of ULTRA ..... would it have changed the outcome of the war if the Germans had to have realised they were being 'monitored' ? doubtful.... they could never have hoped to, ultimately, win against the combined demographics, agricultural and industrial output of the US, the USSR and the British Empire.... but: the conflict may well have been much longer and bloodier..... maybe even continuing on into the early 1950s ..... and some-thing less than 'unconditional surrender' may well have been in-the-offing...

Just a little info about the Tiger II...Looking at the blueprints of the Tiger II we see the front armor is sloped at 30 degrees, the upper section being 150mm the lower section being 100mm while the underside for a third of the way back is 40mm then reduced to 25mm to the back armor running up at 30 degrees and 80mm thick. The front section of the turret was 185mm... I don't see exact side armor measurements but they appear to be 80mm with 40mm decks.

@Behold a Pale Horse Because, believe it or not, different countries use the symbols differently, and a “V” in German is pronounced like English “F”. If you look back 200 years there was an English symbol that was between the “F” and the “S” sound. A lot of English words that used to have that symbol now have an “F” instead.

@CR0VV The confusion is increasing. The German “V” is pronounced like the English “F”. The German “W” is pronounced like the English “V”. An example being Volkswagen, which if it was written in English to sound like the German would be FolksVagen.

In 1944 a tiger tank costs 800,000 marks ($300,000 US). which is about $4.4 million US today or about the cost of a Leopard 2 or Abrams. It had to be abandoned for the need of 200 marks of fuel.

@Mark They were never short of ammo, Fuel yes, ammo no. The Allies bombed them 24/7, but in '44 the Germans built 20,000 air craft of all types. How? in the woods, in barns, in tunnels, wherever. At the time of surrender about 85% of German war production was still happening. Just imagine that, we bombed them 24/7 and the just kept rolling along. Unbelievable.

I would submit to you that during that war the price of a tank was totally irrelevant. It was pretty well known that whoever would lose would also lose its money. In other words, the Nazis did not care about the price, neither did the U.S. Or any other of the combatants. It was winning that counted.

Stop considering the Waffen SS as an elite fighting force at it’s entirety.. To make this really short , out of the 38 divisions ,only about half of them were mechanised and armoured ( and even lesser at this case ) . In addition ,taking their combat history service, only 8-10 divisions were really effective and ‘elite’ so to speak. A good amount were hastily formed and disbanded not long after .Or were never commissioned in frontline combat roles , and instead were left behind participating in anti partisan / ‘clean up’ operations . Also , in general, their training and selection standards were dropping as the war progressed, especially after 1943

in all fairness when most people talk about the waffen ss they are talking about the 1st 2nd 3rd 5th 9th 10th 11th 12th and 17th which by their performance in the war should be considered elite

PS finishing watch the video, looks like the Waffen SS of the video broke their own doctrine and moved its tanks with no infantary support, the combined arms warfare was the strong point of german military doctrine, and whatt allowed them, that during most of the war had inferior equipment, to defeat enemies way stronger than them, lets remember that France alone had not only more numerous armed forces than Germany, but french tanks were far superior to anything germans had, same happened in oostfront... either those Waffen SS werent "hardened veterans" but in fact brand new recruits on the units that been decimated on Normandy battles (i know for a fact that Gerd von Rundstedt had spent previous months rebuilding, re-arming and re-equipping the units that managed to retreat to german border after the disastrous battles on France), or something is very weird about this ""documentary""

I love this show but it has some misleading animations sometimes I don't doubt that what the veteran is saying is true but the distances that the tanks are engaging in the animation, when he's talking around 9 minutes. The tanks are engaging at what looks like almost point blank range and the shermans aren't capable of penetrating?! whereas in reality at under 600 m the Sherman 75 mm gun could penetrate the tiger ones frontal armor apparently there's even been claims that at 200 meters it has significantly damaged a tiger 2. So at less then 100m or so as at distance point blank... it's going thru
