I'm Tongan. Was kinda freaked out to hear about this, but it looks like the impact wasn't as devastating as it could have been. All my family who still live there have been posting about it on social media, and I haven't heard about any deaths. Thank goodness 🙏

It was unusually explosive for being not a very massive eruption. This is because sea water suddenly intruded in to the magma-filled volcanic plumbing, flashing a huge amount of water to steam -- big 💥 BOOM, but not very much ash ejected. Helluva lot of steam, though; there was an absolute epic like lighting storm associated with the eruption. Would have looked frickin apocalyptic if you would have been right underneath the eruption column.
Billy 4 aylar önce
It was said that the eruption was heard over 1300 km away in New Zealand 😳 in comparison, people in Africa heard the Kratakoa eruption over twice the distance in the 1880s. Though that was already a volcanic island above water when it exploded. I'd be interested in seeing which one was bigger, as this Tonga eruption was underwater.
Billy 4 aylar önce
@MrTethysS Yeah, the first article I read mentioned an underwater volcano, which technically is correct. 99% of it is underwater. 😂 I've seen the island on Google maps satellite view and it's pretty small. Relatively new.

The problem would be aeration of the water. Ships can't float on bubbles. So they sink like rocks. This is a good theory, of what is actually happening, in the Bermuda scenario. Gas release.

Shockwave was incredibly powerful and keep in mind it was a underwater volcano😳
TheFirebird123456 4 aylar önce
That actually makes it worse from what I heard. the analogy is think about a steam explosion, the water touches the magma and is instantly vaporized which causes the magma to split revealing new hot rock to touch new water which is then vaporized and then repeat this again and again. The cloud is now huge amounts of ash and steam.

@anahata2009 No, I’m not making a blanket statement. You can’t deny the science that it can answer for the recent weather phenomena. That’s all.
anahata2009 4 aylar önce
You seem to be implying that climate change suddenly kicked in last year, in response to volcanic eruptions. Volcanoes are one contributor to atmospheric particulate and gases, but only one. Extreme changes in Earth's climate didn't start last year. It's been happening for a long time, with acceleration since the onset of the industrial age.
four birds
four birds 4 aylar önce
@Jabez LeBret Well their first statement is simply a fact. It is many things though creating the changes. The most ironic is the people planting trees. You see we know if you remove way to many trees you cause drought, since trees are important in cloud formation and triggering updraft currents that can start storms. To much of a good thing is a bad thing though. With multiple groups getting together to each plant a billion or more trees they are unknowingly terraforming earth to have longer periods of rain and snow. People will see statistics notice things are changing faster and demand we plant more trees.
Gail Carey
Gail Carey 4 aylar önce
@Jabez LeBret Breadcrumb Home Learning Zone How Climate Works How Volcanoes Influence Climate Volcanic eruptions are responsible for releasing molten rock, or lava, from deep within the Earth, forming new rock on the Earth’s surface. But eruptions also impact the atmosphere. The gases and dust particles thrown into the atmosphere during volcanic eruptions have influences on climate. Most of the particles spewed from volcanoes cool the planet by shading incoming solar radiation. The cooling effect can last for months to years depending on the characteristics of the eruption. Volcanoes have also caused global warming over millions of years during times in Earth’s history when extreme amounts of volcanism occurred, releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
