Putting it out there again: Dredd (2012)'s Slo-Mo FX! It's a lot of basic slow-motion, but they tweak it with VFX to such a pleasing and iconic aesthetic that it DESERVES to be reacted to!

Such a shame that movie didn't do well. It was amazing and I really wanted a sequel.

what gets me in the breaking bad scene is the explosion itself. it's so realistic and raw, no intense fireballs or any of that stuff. just plain power and awesomeness
TheAthens619 7 gün önce
The unrealistic thing from it is that he gets up and walks out, fixes his tie, and then dies. That's not how that works, he would have been knocked out from the shockwave , concussed and died quickly after; 0% of getting up and walking out. Don't care if you're a bad ass villain, you're still human and obey the laws of physics

I would love to see y’all discuss the hunger games! As the series progressed, the cgi became better and better. Additionally, much of the cgi was creating environments which were very stylized, and I would love to hear y’all discuss how to create convincing environments while keeping a specific style

The 2nd one was filmed partially at the Atlanta Beach, which was an artificial beach constructed for the 96 Olympics, to have the circular beach in the arena. The VFX in those shots is incredible, I think the only thing that isn't created is the beach itself. The entire background and I'm sure lots of the stuff in the water is CG.

i really liked the jankiness of the NPH slow-mo sequence. it was an affect i hadn't seen before and felt unique and jarring which i think was the intended result
Mark Colville
Mark Colville 3 aylar önce
@RetroRad The mismatched framerate is the intended part, the terrible rotoscoping, bad exposure and lighting is not the intended part. Unless the goal is to make it look like low budget cgi, in which case they succeeded.
RetroRad 3 aylar önce
It IS the intended result and Its so frustrating that they don't realize it. It's a stylized attempt at portraying latency in like an online video game. I think its super cool, and exactly what they were going for. They wanted to try something different than just re-doing an old effect that they already proved they could do perfectly, even back then.
crosina 4 aylar önce
Yes!! I remember watching those scenes in the Witcher and praying you guys would break it down. My brain kept going “That’s CG! Wait, it’s not CG, no, that’s CG! Wait? That’s not CG?” Glad to finally have some closure 😂.

this but also in Silent Hill there's a scene with dark Alessa hugging Rose and then just kinda "integrates" herself into her.
Meris 3 aylar önce
The problem with the NPH scene is that we're inexplicably getting both character's perspectives of the same event, which led them to use effects which make no sense. Choose a viewpoint and stick to it; bullet time is already stretching the rules of cinematography for a specific effect.

Ahhh, I'm so disappointed they didn't talk about the VFX that needed to be done to cover the track in Gus's last shot. They had to digitally replace the debris on the floor in order to cover the camera track. That was also a very impressive feat.
D3DS3C 4 aylar önce
I just came back to say that yesterday I watched The Matrix Resurrections and that scene with NPH where he uses "Bullet Time" was really distracting for me. I agree with Niko it did feel really janky. Also, I didn't like that it was so Meta.

The heart attack from me was knowing he *had* to be dead, and then seeing him walk out. Impossible! There's no *way* he could've survived! But, if anyone *could* have, it would be Gus... And there was nothing else in the show to suggest that kind of VFX budget. It was absolutely amazing filmmaking.

Watching this episode it finally clicked why I liked this show less than a few years ago: The episodes featuring guests who break down their own work are becoming more and more like a reel or teaser for their films. (And I am actually quite certain that Corridors range on TRvid definitely has a lot of influence on the decision to accept the invite. There must be some marketing thoughts.) This episode is again typical for the beginning of the show. Without someone who participated in making the scenes which are reviewed the analysis is much more honest and much less buttering up.

The Breaking Bad scene is what finally made me watch the show. I kept seeing the ending of each episode on recordings of other shows I was watching, but never watched the show because I could not see how a show about a Meth dealer could be good. I'd like to see you guys react to: -Silent Hill (2006) - the otherworld transitions, and Monsters designs -Sam Raimi's Spider man 1 and 3 (sandman effects, Venom and symbiote effects) This one is more of a technical question, but in Spiderman No Way Home, they obviously reused footage of the lizard and Sandman from their original films. But they had different effects, which requires, I assume, the original footage that was caught on camera. Is it common practice to save raw footage for that long? Edit: I can't believe I forgot this but also in Silent Hill there's a scene with dark Alessa hugging Rose and then just kinda "integrates" herself into her.

For me that Nivellan (The Witcher) effect is so great due to the eyes being real, that ties it together and the performance so well.
Iain McClatchie
Iain McClatchie 4 aylar önce
The lip movements didn't look right. His lips needed to form a momentary seal when he speaks a "p". That's not actually possible when you have adjacent exposed teeth (in this case going both up and down). Nivellen's lips don't conform around his teeth, and we expect to see that when he talks. I realize it's a lot of work, but lips don't just go up and down when we talk. They are so agile that deaf people can tell what you are saying from looking at your lips! Watch Nivellen again -- you can't do that, his lips are too stiff. Human lips are more compliant, and we actively use our teeth to support them. People missing front teeth have speech impediments that you can hear. There's another problem, which is that teeth can't be exposed all the time, because they'd dry out and then shatter. Water isn't enough -- dentin requires saliva to maintain toughness and mend microfractures. Even the big canines of a lion or tiger or the protruding lowers of a hippo are covered and kept wet by loose lips that fold over them nearly all the time. These long lips are pulled back when fighting or eating, leading to the characteristic wrinkles that we associate with fierceness.

The creature work in The Eternals was really good, but there's a specific shot I think you'd like. In the fight at Druig's compound there's a moment where a deviant gets killed and they just toss the tail away after they kill it and the weight of it feels so real

@Lyubomir Grigorov Indeed, it also kind of sucks that they only made 6 episodes. The Season was solid but felt pretty compressed. Good to know about mirrors: If you put one finger on a mirror, there will be a little space between your finger and the reflection of said finger. Now you know, that it's a real mirror. If there is no space between the finger and its reflection it is a fake mirror where on the other side is most definitely some kind of space, as seen as in the Matrix shot. Important to know, if you're trying on or changing clothes in fitting rooms, public toilets, etc. Because if it is a fake mirror there can be a chance of a camera lurking behind it. Stay safe, in various aspects.

Nivellen was SO well-done in that Witcher season 2 episode. Could’ve fooled me that it was all prosthetics, but nope, the whole face is CG. Now that’s some masterful VFX work that doesn’t overdo it while also allowing the actor to not be bothered by makeup and prosthetics for his facial performance. Also, Kristofer Hivju did it brilliantly. But man, is it weird to see him cleanly shaved after seeing him with a full beard for so long, lol

I was just kinda thinking throughout the matrix that the reason for the obvious weirdness in the VFX at times is because this guy is intentionally screwing with the simulation and as such they allowed things that were a little jank to sip through. Ya know because he's intentionally glitching it

Would love to see a breakdown of the ghostbusters movie vfx, starting with the charming if slightly outdated effects of the first movie and pulling through to how they brought a certain character into afterlife. Think it would be an interesting breakdown as those movie are filled with both great (the books floating and the first ghost scene in the library, first movie) and some less great effects, (something about the terror dog chase scene in the first movie doesn't feel right when I watch it at least)

Man, Giancarlo is such an underrated actor... First thing I remember seeing him in was Trading Places as one of the jailbirds in with Eddie Murphy's character. Man's got some good roles.

You guys should do Cloverfield. I was watching The Making of for it yesterday and my mind was blown at how much of that movie was shot on a green screen stage with such a small budget.

Would honestly love a version of this where they breakdown some iconic music videos. The Scientist by Coldplay? Would be a good start.

Would be great to see you guys do the behind the scenes for the Hobbit and Benedict Cumberbatch's insistence on using motion capture despite no one thinking it’s needed

On the same lines as matrix, you guys should try out the matrix’s game! All the physics are amazing! There is also a few things I have noticed that need some work, like the crash physics, everything seems too light. But also a ton of amazing things, the green tint, the lighting, all of it is pretty cool!

Tbh I think that the crash physics are the best ever done, only complaint I have is that the car doors and stuff don’t fall off. Cars, when in high speed crash, do seem very light irl. Cars don’t weigh that much in the grand scheme of things when talking about 100‘s of miles per hour

I think Barney from How I Met Your Mother actually saying the words “bullet time” killed the scene more than any visual effect ever could.

I know y’all just did a review of a scene from Breaking Bad but I was wondering if it may be worth it to see the scenes of a de-aged Bryan Cranston from the flashbacks. Idk whether or not there’s any CG or filters, or if it’s just makeup and the specific lighting situation the scene takes place to hide Cranston’s age. When I watch those scenes something always feels just a little off.

You should take a look at The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance! It has some wonderful CG mixed with spectacular puppet work. I think the shots where they transition from wide CG environments to up-close sets are particularly interesting

Oh my gosh! I just posted a comment about this and then happen to see this comment. Yes! I loved the show for the most part and still kinda pissed at Netflix for canceling the show, they did Jim Henson company and all the people who worked so passionately on the show dirty fr. The director and producer was told by Netflix the show was canceled 60 days after the show was released but were told not to say anything publicly for another few months from what I've heard.

As much as I love Breaking Bad, I always felt that scene where Gus walked out and adjusted his tie, just felt so out of scope for the realistic grounded tone that the rest of the show has. Great effect, but a bit gratuitous I feel.
Knives 3 aylar önce
@Brian Grussing I can believe it, shock and trauma in wartimes can cause the brain to totally short circuit at the horror it is trying to adjust to, but a bullet to the brain is very different to a bomb to the cranium when a good portion of it is missing.

@Attila Puzder I mean, yes I think it's quite badass that he maintains to his character likeness through and through, but I still feel like for the show, it's a moment that could have been displayed with a little less gratuity and flair. Absolutely great episode nonetheless, Face/Off remains one of the greats.

@Mick Mize Hehe, oh I know. My girlfriend and I recently came off our..3rd viewing in it's entirety, my 4th and a half, and I get that, but the whole show still maintains a wholehearted level of grounded realism throughout, for the most part.

You wouldn't believe how far a legless torso can crawl if in shock. Or people with multiple bullets in the brain can live for hours & even days before the brain bleeding kills them. They might not even know they have a bullet(s) in their brain & if the shot(s) enter either next to the eye or in ear, it could require close scrutiny by highly experienced to tell.

I had the same feeling when I've seen it for the first time. It was just so ridiculous and out of the style of the series. However it's pretty awesome how the character stays consistent even during his death. He also adjusted his tie after getting something done and he does the same in this scene showing that he always knew the risks of what he was doing. Walt was able to outsmart him and he accepts it without any hesitation.

You guys should react to Eternals CGI. One scene that stuck out the most was when Ikaris was fighting a Deviant, his body being dragged around by the creature while he keeps blasting his eyebeams. Loved the lighting and the animation in that. Reminded me of the bear scene in The Revenant.
