I am a 70 plus grandmother and I simply love this song and your analysis of it. I didn't know what to expect and I have never watched the Eurovision contest. I know that Abba won years ago...haha. I am not a fan of rap, but I simply love everything about this song, this video and the band. I don't understand a word of what they are saying, but I love the energy, the rhythms, the melodies, the dancing, the flute like instrument...just everything. Thank you!

Stephania is his mother. He dedicated the song to his mom. It’s sick crazy cool. I grew up in Kalush - it is a small town in western Ukraine. And I live now in Canada. And I am extremely proud of my Ukrainian roots. 🇨🇦❤️💙💛🇺🇦 the national ethnic instrument is called tilinka. It’s different from SOPILKA that was played by A-Go last year. THANK you for your cool analysis. ❤️🇨🇦🇺🇦💛💙🇺🇦🇨🇦 Аnd this: Yessssss. Syncopated beats. Ukrainian folklore notes. Brakedancing. Ukrainian gorgeous costumes are amazing. In original video- the guy who is breakdancing is called “kylymman” which means carpet man. His costume covers all his body and it’s coloured with Ukrainian ornaments. And… Noone ever saw his real face. Only stage image which is even more cooler! 😎mysterious. Mr. incognito.

This song is dedicated to Mother Stefania, pink hat rapper’s mom. “Lully-lully” before the chorus is a beginning of Ukrainian lullaby. Chorus translation “Mother Strfania, the field blooms, but she is turning grey. Sing me a lullaby mum I want to hear your native word”. Rap parts are about growing up in both hard or simply times, but always with mother’s support. Thank you for your reaction. With love from Ukraine 💛💙

@Anna Rae Sorry, but I can not fancy a country, which prefers civil war instead of aiming for peaceful coexistence. It should had been apparent russia would get involved with the whole country being transformed into a geopolitical economic weapon by using nationalism as a tool. The ESC should not be abused for political fights. Next thing you'd see would be same thing at Olympic games. Maidan was fine, the coup was not. Contracts and agreements were already in place for peaceful solution 2014, police was withdrawn and early reelections were negotiated already. There was no need for an ideologic cleansing.

@Skeltek it is not war propaganda, that is the purview of the illegal attackers. This is a beautiful tribute to mothers love and they are using it to highlight the mothers who have lost and been lost during this atrocious war of aggression by an evil dictator.

The song is genius! it has all the compositional elements you want, without the change in key, that many songs in Eurovision have... instead this is ethnic and modern, and that flute riff and rhythm are just perfection!

@antonio moura the quality speaks for itself, if you don't hear it you might just be tone deaf. The creator of this channel hit it all right on the head when he reviewed it without even understanding the words; which is what translates in music across languages. The fact that it is amazing in a language that's not understandable to all makes it that much more complex and rich. (I understand portions of it being Polish, certain linguistic similarities between the two).

@antonio moura From my point of view, when it comes to quality, they are among the very best ones in this year's competition 👍👍 So if they win, their success should not be belittled due to the current political situation. This is just my opinion - I am aware many people may disagree with me on the subject.

As a Portguese (and i do love my country's song) i wouldn't even be mad if we lost to this. Some people might say it is because of the war and the overall political climate... i would say that, above all that, this song is just top-notch quality and a good change of pace in the Festival! \o/

@Andriy 🇺🇦 Why not? For foreigners it's a very fun song to listen to because it's catchy and rhytmical, but keeping the lyrics in Ukrainian helps carry over a deeper and relevant to today's politics meaning. Seems like a perfect song for Eurovision for me, but maybe I'm biased because I'm from Poland lol

I'm Italian and I love "Brividi" but I also love "Stefania" ..therefore I am quite in trouble. What I appreciate in ESC is just bringing songs in one's mother tongue, knowing how to convey emotions and knowing how to connect to others in the UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF MUSIC. I'm sorry if I contradict you but English is not the universal language even if it is undoubtedly the most used. However most of the people following ESC are non-English, they can understand and speak English but it remains their second language. There are thoughts and emotions that the English language struggles to convey, as well as vice versa. So I prefer to be captured by the sound of instruments and voices, then go and see the translated text (in English because it is usually more accurate and not translated literally) and, if I find a good translation, analyze how the original language of the song is expressed. This is how I started in the distant past with Dylan when English was a difficult subject for me.

I absolutely agree. I don't understand the lyrics but this song makes me cry everytime. And it happens with other songs of ESC even if I don't understand the language. There's something in singing in mother tongue that's, I'd say, mystical. And I love it! And I love this song, too. Слава Україні!

I was very interested in your opinion about the Ukrainian song - it's one of my favorites in the competition, and I was happy to find out it's so positive :-) In my view, this uncoventional combination of traditional ethnic elements and energetic good-quality modern rap is really entertaining. I disagree with those who claim that the Ukrainian group are bound to win due to political reasons. I think their song stands for itself, it's high-quality stuff with capturing melody, great amount of rhythmical energy, and a clever and intriguing concept. I'll keep my fingers crossed for 🇺🇦, too!

I’m from Ukraine and I really looove your reaction 🥰 Our guys are really talented, but I’m not sure they won on #eurovision22 only because of singing. Personally I voted for Great Britain and Poland .🇬🇧🇵🇱 However we all do grateful to all people who supported us in this conquest. In my opinion this is how whole Europe said us - “we are standing with Ukraine” . 💙💛 But all Ukrainian I’m sure , exchange all victories in all sport or song conquests only for ONE BIG VICTORY, which we are waiting the most .

The sad thing with a lot of eurovision today that a lot of artists is submitted singing in English, it takes away a whole aspect of wonder to peak your interest in what the songs is about as you look into it i.e. with Stefania I looked up the lyrics and meaning is a honor to the frontman's mother and to the other mothers and children in Ukraine right now dealing with the Russian occupation. If this was sung in English it lacks authenticity and spirit. Ofcourse you loose the feeling of connectedness by singing in the native language other than English, but the thing is with eurovision is that it should initially be an assemblance of different cultures and share their music with the world, but instead becomes mainstream English, pop-culture, wokeness and politics. Like I think despite what Ukraine is going through at the moment I would still have voted for it for its authenticity to its culture.

Why English being a universal language is unfortunate? I am Ukrainian and I love the English language. I am proud of my culture and of our Kalush representing it so well internationally. More and more people are going to learn Ukrainian through songs just like they learn other languages.

@Heiko Berres thank you, yes I only did a few last year and ended up listening to Shum separately which I then regretted because I was so blown away by it. There’s so much to say. Maybe I’ll do one as purely an analysis. Shum was my favourite last year followed by Måneskin
