Is there a border we will never cross? Are there places we will never reach, no matter how hard we try? It turns out, there are. Even with sci-fi technology, we are trapped in a limited pocket of the Universe and the finite stuff within it. How much universe is there for us and how far can we go?

Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell
Hey Everybody! So this video is a remake and remaster of an older video that has a mistake in it. You can watch the original here: trvid.com/video/video-ZL4yYHdDSWs.html What is the mistake? In a nutshell: In the original video we said that it was PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the local group and reach other galaxy groups. That the rest of the universe is moving away from us too fast to catch up. But that’s wrong. It is not PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the Local Group, just extremely unlikely that we’ll ever do it. BUT: If you have a lot of time and a fast spaceship you can still get to a limited amount of galaxies - these galaxies will eventually get out of reach forever but until then, they are technically within reach. So why did we keep the video up and didn’t purge it when we deleted our addiction and refugee crisis videos? Well, it has to do with the nature and severity of the mistake: We did talk to a few astrophysicists to ask them what they thought and if we should take down the video. Their feedback was pretty clear, they thought it was still fine as the universe expansion things explained in the video are correct and they didn’t consider the local group thing as too major. This was actually a case of “good enough”. Also, back when this original upload happened, Kurzgesagt was operating at pretty tight margins and just redoing a video was not easy for us. Back then the team was small and we were fighting to put new videos out. So we just swallowed the bitter pill and kept the video around. But the video still bothered us, as far as we know this was the biggest unfixed mistake on the channel. Super frustrating, especially because the core idea of the video is so fascinating. The limit of our species. The actual limit. So yeah, we finally remade the video, sorry for taking this long, life got in the way. The original video will stay up, you can compare the two if you want to see how far we have come in a few years in terms of production quality. All in all, we could only grow the channel and work on getting better because of direct support from you guys. So thank you for that. - Philipp PS: If you want, check out our shop for some new posters about the universe posters and black hole plushies and stuff like that: bit.ly/3dRJj71

This gave me a scary thought.... what if the galaxy we are in and why there isnt alien activity or federation to meet is simply that we possibly are in such a young galaxy and being so far in the edge of it we are truely alone.

If we look at space through the eyes of science? We will never understand the meanings and true origins. We are all source beings that were all created at the beginning, and we have have live countless lives. You are connected to everything in the universe and soon enough those who recognize their true nature will be able to connect with all of the beings in the universes. How? We are already connected, we are all one. Look at the spiritual side of the universe. It may lead you into a place of better understanding and less speculation by ‘science.’ Just a thought Love to all❤️

In the future we are gonna learn how just as how- we thought they wouldnt know a thing about big bang - they are gonna look back at us as primitive apes nd find a way to travel through black holes, teleport via dark energy and make it to distances we cant make if we turned on a ship and blasted off into nothing outward, instead of going into black holes and using quantum style tech we can possibly not even fully imagine. But thats just my idea of whats possible ofc. h3h3 Tc Everyone. Luv.All.. Star Out!

Oli DR

The thing is, with potential applications of quantum communications, there might be no need to physically travel such a distance. We know that two entangled particles are capable of communicating instantaneously over perhaps indefinite physical distances. Even if you needed to physically travel to such a location, from what we currently know about space-time, there might be some way of traversing vast distances quickly through non-conventional means. Scientific development is almost exponential in terms of how quickly advancements can be made on the back of prior knowledge. Thirty years ago we had barely achieved handheld mobile communications and open internet access. Now we have potential options for FTL communications, quantum computing (which is BIG in terms of computational speed etc), and a data-sphere you can access instantly from a handheld device (almost) anywhere on the planet. Give it a few years, a decade or two, and this limit will likely be less of a concern.

these videos are entertaining to watch, but the thought of travelling extremely far out to other planets or galaxies that are getting further and further away from us at increasing speeds slightly makes me scared of travelling to these places, as you'd pretty easily be able to get completely separated from your friends, family, and almost the entirety of the human civilization if you visited one of these places at the wrong time. Fortunately, pretty much none of us here will live long enough to make it to a point in which we have the technology to reach these far out locations, and by the time the technology is made there would likely be barely any galaxies left that could be visited

If a being in the far future in Milkdromeda won't be able to see past their galaxy and learn about the big bang through cosmic background radiation; similarly we could right now be at a point where fundamental knowledge of the universe is not detectable anymore.

Modest correction to video beginning about 4:20. The cosmic horizon is *not* necessarily where the recession velocity exceeds the speed of light, though it can be depending on the makeup of the universe (matter, radius, dark energy, etc...). That boundary specifically is instead the Hubble radius defined by r=c/H. Because our universe is not just dark energy, but still has a significant enough matter density, there are still galaxies who are already receding faster-than-light, but whose contemporary light emitted today will still reach us in the far future. In fact many of the objects we see today have *always* been receding faster-than-light and were never within our Hubble sphere, but are none-the-less still visible and will be visible for quite some time. As an example: The cosmic microwave background "surface-of-last-scattering" is currently receding away from us at 3.2c with a redshift of z~1,100. But when those photons were emitted, that same location was receding away from us at over 58c over 13 billion years ago. Any objects on that sphere have then always been receding faster-than-light from us despite their visibility.

When the Big Bang happened, did it consider the possibility that it would one day create a tiny rock populated by sentient beings trying to study it and make sense of it?
13 saatler önce
Considering that the big bang was literally everything, so... we are technically all the singularity, somewhat- it had the atoms that would one day be Hitler, but also all the people he murdered, because of the law of conservation of matter, then, if it had been sentient... I guess it might know.

If we have more questions than answers about the piece of glitter closest to us...what makes you think we have any detailed answers to the whole cup?? -Hell, we can't even answer some questions about our own piece of glitter!? 🤷‍♂️ No hate or debate intended. I'm just saying. Interesting point of view for our universe tho. 🤔🌌✨

The biggest flaw that comes in my mind in this brilliant examination of current celestial understanding is the fundamental human temporal bias. This is a term im not sure anyone else uses or ive seen anyone where else so I'll explain it. Perception is by nature power, and this video shows human perceptual power in the small mistake they made. Each human life on statistical average has the same approximate life span. Lifespan become human temporal bias. Further more the byproduct of entropy introduced by the laws of thermal dynamics compounds this temporal bias. Our lives are short, we know that on a deep intuitive physical level, and thus our perception is stunted by it. IF we are finite everything else must be finite. Right now we're children scared we'll never get to do what we want because of the limtis of time, but look how far our species has come so far. Look how rapidly technology has improved over the last century alone as humanities freeing itself from the shakles of a repressive past fearful of new ideas. I think it's virtually absurd to even say what we may or may not do when we can't even experiment with anything because we're still trapped more or less on this planet. That is the evidence of temporal bias to me. However I really enjoyed this video, think you did a great job, and made me a supporter of your efforts.

This might be a pointless question but I'll ask anyway. The video mentioned that in the future there will be nothing to see and that the people living at that time will think they are on an island of sorts. So, what's out there that we can't see now? What in the sky have we lost due to time that we will never see again that shapes what we know as what's in the universe?

It is an important point, though it would only apply to the physically tangible dimensions of existence, 4th,3rd,2nd, and 1st, and if humanity would choose to to seek enlightenment rather then material possessions, and put alot of work into forming a balanced and symbiotic relationship with our environment, world, solar system, galaxy we would find that once we ascended to the higher dimensions, say 5th and above, we would find that many if not most of the conscious beings that moved out of reach in the physical realm would be quite present in the metaphysical realm

Tell you what, forget space travel and interplanetary colonization. You will have achieved the next step in your evolution when you can simply teach people to respect one another and to bend over and pick up a piece of litter and deposit it in its appropriate receptacle. This has not happened, never will and thus humans will die in the toxic waste that was once a beautiful earth. Have a nice day.

My prof said: "3 spacecraft shine lights in the same direction. One is still, one is moving away and one is moving in the opposite direction. They are all on the same line and are shining their lights in the same direction down the line towards 3 other "detector" craft. These 3 other craft are on the same line but distant to the first 3. The second group of 3 have light detectors which also measure the speed of the lights from the first 3 craft. One detector craft is still relative to the still craft in the light emitting group. Of the two remaining "detector' crafts - one is moving away and the other is moving toward the first, emitting group." My prof says all the detector crafts measure the speed of all the light streams the same - as C. Isn't that what we were all taught? So, if the stars at the edge of the visible universe emit light - irrespective of how fast they are moving away, why would their light fail to reach us if it is traveling at C towards us? And how can they move away faster than C if nothing moves faster than C? And if there was really an "edge" to the observable universe then shouldn't the most distant stars already by disappearing? Yet we never hear reports of this.
