Everyone can convince people for better deals, its just a matter of how much of a scumbag you wanna be. He couldve screwed those people more, but he decided not to, and thats it. Salesman are basically people who try and sell you shit you dont need for a lot more than its worth, so essentially scammers.

We kinda did this in middle school! It’s a game called bigger or better, where everyone would team up into groups and receive a paper clip, then go around knocking on peoples doors asking if they had anything bigger or better to trade, and then when the time was up we would all meet up and have judges determine which item was the best. One time my team won with a couch!
@Suzi Houde value is always subjective, one man's garbage is another man's treasure. Same with money, if I want something very bad I am willing to pay more money for it. It's like some people justify $1000 iphone, another person doesn't because they don't care enough. So the value of iphone is not the same as price, because price is always $1000 but value is different depends who you ask - some think iphone is worth $1000, others will NOT pay more than $300 because they think $1000 is more valuable than iphone etc
@sten what makes the trade system interesting is that items are not valued universally like money. the toy dinosaur was worth more to the girl than its dollar value - and her altoids were worth less to her than their dollar value. that made for a dramatic trade - a 600% increase in a single transaction. money is a fixed number and it's harder to trade up as quickly.
isn't it easier to use money in between transactions? Lets say you sell somebody a pen for $1 now you buy something with $1 that's actually worth $5 and then you sell that thing for $5 etc etc. I think it's almost impossible to barter without money because you have to find somebody that wants that specific item and they have to have something worth more at the same time which like never happens. So using money makes it way easier because everybody has money or need money.

It's not though. There was a lady who wanted to trade a paperclip for a house. She got really far and I stopped checking in to see if she succeeded, but she didn't use flyers or spend any extra money to do it. It IS possible, he just wanted to do it QUICKLY which meant trying different tactics.
