There has been at least 5 reports to the FAA from US pilots having similar issues with the 737 Max aircraft however, none have resulted in crashes. Yes, there is a design flaw with the MCAS system but quick and proper actions from the crew can lead to a safe outcome. Boeing should have developed a better training program that discussed the MCAS system, how it operates and how to disable it in the event of a malfunction.

VOX... Good reporting but the issue goes far beyond what you have reported. My friend has been an AA tech for 30+ years and after the first MAX went down he told me to never get on a MAX plane. Even he wouldn't fly a MAX plane on standby as an AA employee if that was the plane available and he can fly FREE! The issue goes deeper as all airplane manufacturers initially design a great, stable plane but then they start "stretching" them to hold more and more passengers which moves their center of gravity that should be over the wings further and further away. Boeing isn't the only one that stretches to the max.. they all do. But, Boeing stretched the 737 too far and to the point that they had to place the engines far ahead of the wings to try and restore some center of gravity that could only be managed with sophisticated flight control systems. If you visit the Boeing website and read about the 737 MAX they highlight the new placement of the engines in front of the wings... As if that is a good thing. They placed them there to try and restore some form of manageable balance to the plane as it had been stretched to the MAX. Yes, the more efficient engines were larger and had to reside higher up but that was not the whole story. I don't care what Boeing passes through as a flight control software patch, I will NOT fly on a plane that has been stretched to the point it is not sound and requires sophisticated flight control systems to keep it in the air. Our military has the stealth wing bomber that is a great achievement but it can't be flown by our greatest pilots without the highly sophisticated flight control systems that keep it in the air. Military personnel get paid to take risk, as a common passenger on a commercial airline, I don't care to take those risks and don't want to be on a plane that can't be flown by a skilled pilot if the flight control system fails.

Oh look, in both cases crew during 12 minutes cannot regocnize standart failure scenario "stabilizer runaway condition" and perform proper action. For what purpose they are sitting in cockpit, only for make photos to instagram? If they know about MCAS or no, the must perform standart memory procedure, due to stab runaway may be caused by several reasons, it's not pilot business for perform investigation in flight of root cause of runaway. I think that's why sir Boeing don't inform crew about MCAS at entering 737Max in service - cause it not recall new actions from crew and there is no crew infuence for MCAS.

Problem here was that accidents werent in America with americans dying cause of it, so it must likely is gonna "slide" and wont impact the company as it should, because there should be real legal and financial backlash to boeing so they would learn the lesson wich they wont. But in all at least Airbus is now ahead and will continue to be cause of this stupid things, only problem is that more ppl are gonna die from decisions like this cause of inaction by authorities towards boeing. Finally it really stuns me how this sort of stuff is still possible to happen this days, and how companies still buy faulty equipment...

This is not actually correct, showing a fair amount of ignorance of Theory of Flight. The engines on the 737 Max being mounted higher would actually REDUCE the thrust - drag couple, not increase it. ALL aircraft with under-wing engines will tend to pitch up when power is applied and vice-versa. Also, aircraft have been fitted with anti-stall devices for at least 40 years. They will first give a "Stick Shake" warning to the pilots that the angle of attack is approaching a critical amount - then as a last resort the stick is pulled out of the pilot's hands and moved fully forward to un-stall the aircraft. BUT, like all systems, it can go wrong. What IS different, and what went wrong here, is that in most aircraft there is a simple and quick way to completely disengage the anti-stall system. THIS was the problem with the crashes, the pilots couldn't do that.

This report is faulty. By putting the larger engines up and forwards, the plane initially dove downward, then when redesigned it had a tendency to climb to steeply, bringing a greater chance of stall, thus the FAULTY MCAS system was a poorly engineered fix! The MCAS system CANNOT be shutdown without shutting off the power assisting TRIM Control. To level the plane the pilots must adjust the trim and the manual process takes to long. Two solutions. Redesign the plane so that it flys properly without assistance! (Yes expensive) Put a G****M override switch on the G****M MCAS system! (Probably already done)

This is so sad, over 100 people died just because another person wanted to be the best. I feel so bad for all of the families of the people on board the plane when it crashed. This video lacks in something pretty basic in every accident investigation: Aviation accidents doesn’t happens because one single cause. MCAS alone didn’t caused the accident. It surely may have contributed, but there are many other factors, so that’s why media should wait for the FINAL report, that will be ready probably after a year of investigation. This video is only speculation about what was disclosed in the partial reports and airworthiness directives. I’m really sorry for all people that loss their lives and their relatives, but this video won’t help to know what really happened. Vox isn’t NTSB

Thanks The Lightningll for the comment about the sensors costing 10s of thousands of dollars each. So an extra 4 sensors at $40,000 each is $160K. I think that's the price of some high end luxury cars (and not even exotic ones). This is a full size airplane! It's for hundreds of people They can't spend a few extra hundred thousand on it?

This did not mention that the MCAS system only trimmed the aircraft, it did not move the elevator, only the horizontal stabilizer. The trim system is controllable by a switch on the yoke (control stick). It is very easy to tell whether the MCAS is trimming as the wheel next to your leg is spinning and suddenly the yoke would feel heavier. Normally if you feel it getting heavier then you just adjust the trim. Then it happens again, so you trim again. This keeps happening until you realize that something is wrong. This is the part where they needed to be trained more so they knew how to disable the MCAS system. It is not entirely the fault of Boeing but it is still not the fault of the airline who should have trained them more.

Boeing’s only good solution is to delete the program and make a completely new plane that would be different enough that existing pilots have to go through a change like an A220 pilot learning to fly a 777-300ER.

I have to disagree with two main points of your presentation. Lives and reputations are at stake here, so it is very important to be as accurate as possible. First of all, the FAA would not certify the 737MAX under the same type rating as the rest of the 737 family because its STALL CHARACTERISTICS were different, not because of the tendency of the MAX to pitch up on takeoff. This is in fact due to the placement of the new, larger CFM LEAP engines. BTW, the sitting height of the MAX on the ground has also increased, by 9 inches. Additionally, in the Ethiopian crash, the crew made two critical errors. They did not disengage the auto throttles, which remained engaged and it the full thrust takeoff setting. They did in fact correctly disengage the two elevator trim switches, which would by design disable the MCAS system. However, because of the high thrust setting, the air loads on the elevator were so high that the crew had great difficulty manually trimming the elevator, and subsequently, turned the elevator trim switches back on in order to electrically trim the elevator again. Unfortunately, this move proved fatal because it also reengaged the faulty MCAS system, which caused additional nose down trim and eventually led to the crash.

It is a terrible loss for the families and to those who lost their lives Complicit in this is the United States Government as well as Boeing . But ultimately the finamcial.cost of this horriblentragedy will be carried twice by the tax payer . Boeing is heavily subsidized by the US Government and therefore all compensatory damage will be paid once by the tax payer that subsidizes Boeing and then again when the Government is Sued by the families of victims . And not a single person will be charged with manslaughter for their negligence in the charge of duty they had to protect the lives of its passengers . But the rich got richer for a time and they will skate on by with no prison term while someone who got caught selling weed 3 times is serving a life sentence. These families should take everything from Boeing. This was no accident .

If so that was caused by excessive rudder hard over imputed by the co pilot. It wasn't the fault of the aircraft. I was always a fan of Boeing but that was in the days of the 757 and 767. Both superb aircraft but these days money has become more important than safety. This documentary really scared me. Happy flying fella

Ehhhhh Boeing’s (traditionally) are better made and stronger aircraft, I remember a story from flight school that when airbus released the a320(?) a pilot pulled up hard during takeoff and it tore an elevator off, they responded by saying all aircraft will do that. Then Boeing did demos with the 737 doing it.

There is no plane that doesn’t have quirky handling characteristics under various conditions. All designs have their compromises between aerodynamic efficiency and utility. Planes go through many design changes in their life, too include the placement of the engine on the wing. That’s nothing new. I don’t like Boeing, not because they don’t make great planes because they do. I don’t like them because their planes are overrated and their employees are a bunch of unionized babies. These two incidents have many things in common with accidents in decades past with other planes, but they never mention those because this story is being used politically both domestically and internationally. You all believe what you want, but there are parts of this story that are being exaggerated, and parts that are flat out being left out. All to serve a purpose. I don’t necessarily prefer Boeing to Airbus, but you can all start acting like The Lord of the Flies if you want. Because that’s what self serving animals do, they use opportunities like this to serve their own ambitions for power, money and fame by exploiting the weak minded to do things far worse. As far as Vox and their credibility, it’s not hard to scroll back, even within the last year, and find stuff they mentioned as facts, and were not. Vox is like Wikipedia to me, it’s good only as a starting point, but I wouldn’t rely on it.

Danny - It's the result of the airflow over the LEAP engine nacelle contributing to the lift being generated by the wings. It doesn't increase pitch angle as much as it adds to the torque around the lateral axis of the aircraft around the center of gravity, which can move forward or aft about four feet in flight and still be within the aircraft's safe CG envelope.

Boeing has some serious internal issues. Disregarding safety, cutting corners, and putting profit above all else isn't the exception at Boeing, it has become the norm.
