Alright so now that The Last of Us series has kicked off on HBO, it’s only fitting for us to dive in on the rugged, “closed off from the world” main character of Joel Miller. Episode 1 of the series gives us a brief introduction, but we’re going to fill in his backstory, what his future has in store, and why he’s a morally gray character we can't help but love.

Obviously spoilers for the game and potential ones for the series, so if you don't want to be infected with “Spore”-ers, then sneak off now.

So episode 1 of the series does a pretty good job of establishing much of what we learn about Joel from the games, aside from a brief timeline change of 10 years. Joel was born and raised in Arlington Texas, growing up alongside his brother Tommy, with the two later moving to Austin Texas. Austin having a large live music scene, Joel found a passion for music, playing the guitar and once saying he even aspired to be a singer.

However some of his life plans were interrupted when he married an unnamed woman and together had their daughter Sarah. With the stress of young parenthood, Joel unfortunately didn’t have the opportunity to attend college, and the same stresses caused him and his wife to separate. Surprisingly this no-name woman is never revealed, but instead Joel takes over as main caregiver for Sarah, being a single father for most of her life.

The two lived an average suburban life, with Joel working construction jobs. He even had dreams of starting his own construction business later on with various building plans and books scattered about his office. However, he had some difficulties balancing work and life, usually coming home later, and one time was overheard struggling to keep a contracting job. Despite life’s struggles, he always found time for Sarah, whether it be late night movie watching or attending her weekend Soccer games.

I think Joel did the right thing for the wrong reasons. Solely because the Fireflies were NOT giving Ellie a choice. She's the only person that can decide to sacrifice her life. On the other hand, I believe Joel knew that if given the choice, Ellie would've chosen to sacrifice herself, so he also wasn't giving her a choice. Therefore, both sides are at fault here. But if I was in Joel's shoes, I can't say I would've done differently.

You pretty much hit the exact way I feel about it too, beat for beat. I think she woulda chosen sacrifice, and that what made the whole thing morally wrong was them taking her choice away (as well as Joel similarly taking her choice away). And I can't say I woulda done differently either. Though I mighta like...tried to cause a blackout or something and snuck off with her instead of literally killing everybody lol

I can’t stop obsessing over how good HBO is doing so far with episode 1. even the small things they changed work well and make sense to be tweaked. I love when they actually stick to the source material when it was already a good story to begin with without changes. I hope they continue to do so.

Pedro Pascal is a terrific actor- he is great in the role. I think as a human being the character did the best he could and if he let Ellie be killed it would have haunted him into insanity.

As a parent, I can't say I would have made a different decision from Joel. It is selfish to the world but I get it. Joel is a great character study though. Morally grey characters are always the best to dive deep into their heads.

I think anyone in Joel's position would do the same thing. Imagine losing your child and turning completely cold. Then decades later you met a girl around the same age as the daughter you lost and forming a fatherly bond with her over a year of relying on each other to survive. After all that someone tells you "we're gonna kill her now, that's cool with you right?" Nah. It is not cool. I would murder every one of them to protect her too. If they had waited for Ellie to wake up and she consented to giving her life and talked to Joel saying that was what she wanted then maybe he would've walked away

I think if this were a real scenario, they wouldn’t have been able to create a vaccine from just 1 immune person, and they wouldn’t have had to end her life immediately in order to do so… so they were pretty much just sentencing her to death. They also didn’t explain the procedure to Ellie which is pretty messed up! So the fireflies and Joel were both wrong imho

He's speaking TO an officer, but is most likely a lower enlisted given that's who gets the most dangerous and terrible jobs to do in combat. Tbf if Joel had died towards the end of Part 2 and in I Am Legend fashion - Joel acknowledges the person he’d become and accepts his fate and willingly lets Abby kill him with the Club.. I would’ve been fine with that. But he literally dies at the beginning when nothing has been done with his character.

It would be a waste of a good actor if they stick with this storyline. As we all know, adapting stories for series and movies from the original stories can change to fit the narrative and the flow of a live action program. If they are smart, they would keep joel around much longer than the original. It would be worth it, considering everyone came to see him.

Love your channel. Well the reality, you have to put your self in Joel shoes. The thing is too, is that is even the world worth saving. Furthermore no one gave her agency, and also if ellie was awake who is to be sure that the fireflies would tell the truth to her and joel. The only reason why they told Joel the truth is because she was already on the table. Plus the vaccine was a long shot plus how are they going to distribute it. Its a lot. Regurdless. Joel should have told the truth he should have fought ,with words, the fireflies and wait until ellie awakes
