/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */

Ok so The Last Of Us centres around a deadly infection caused by funghi known as the Cordyseps. These real world parasites can be found in nature and what's most terrifying about the Last Of Us is that there is basis in science for something like this to happen.

Episode 1 of the HBO show opens with a scientist theorising the rise of them all the way back in the 60s and like he says, there's no cure.

But where did the infection originate from and how did it spread so quickly?

Well throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down everything we know about how it began and the theories about how it spread so quickly. If you enjoy the video then please hit the thumbs up button and don't forget to subscribe for videos like this every day. With that out the way, thanks for clicking this, now let's get into The Last Of Us.

Now when looking at where it all started I think that the first place to go to is the game. The playstation classic doesn't give us too much of a backstory on where it originated from but there are teases found in documents. When looking through newspapers we come across the Texas Herald which reported on the infection. On September 26th it reported that admittance at hospitals was up 300% due to the infection.

The FDA also released a statement about contaminated crops and that massive recalls were expected. This of couse didn't happen but the statement did give us a clue about what was happening. It said:

So there are clues that it's coming from countries with a hotter climate. This was teased at in the initial science report at the start and 2003 is listed as being one of the hottest years on record.

Now though it's not in South America, we do hear a report in episode 1 that there is something strange going on in Jakarta. This indonesian city is located in Asia and they might have changed this from South America for us to explore it in a later episode. During filming of the show people from Jakarta posted that things were being filmed in the city so we could possibly see this coming down the line at some point.

@JustCallMeLoki It's so funny how the human brain works. It wasn't the daughter, it was the Son (or Son in law) the Mother wasn't pushing it away, she was just sitting there while the son stuffed it in her face. and it was Biscuits not corn bread. Wheat being the issue that started the spread (Ergot). Hence the emphasis on No Pancake Mix, Not eating the biscuits, not eating the Raisin Cookies and no Birthday cake. I get it. I've been there.

It’s especially cool knowing that alongside Cordyceps in nature, there has also evolved an anti-Cordyceps parasite, that prevents Cordyceps from taking over hosts by preying on the parasitic fungus itself as it tries to take over a host. Interesting if Ellie somehow is the first human to have been infected by an evolved version of this “good” parasitic fungus. 😊

@6 4 I'm right, and I never implied Joel being evil. In fact I believe he did the right thing for selfish reasons. There is zero chance they would have been able to rule out all other options within half a day and end-up killing Ellie. The doctor was just trying to cover for his inability to make use of her immunity. If he had done the surgery, then later it would have gone like "Oops, we couldn't have known our artificial environment to preserve the sample doesn't work! The sample is dead and useless now."

They mentioned that the chance of being infected is much higher if you've been in the city. They also said that the neighbor had just been to the city to get her meds. In the truck, when they are talking about whether they could be infected, Joel says that they probably aren't infected because none of them have been to the city recently and while his daughter says she hasn't, she looks worried because that's where she just got his watch fixed.

@Martyntd5 fungal spores can survive heat, even being cooked. Same with bacteria. Flour comes into contact with people way before it's baked. There's a very high chance if wheat or rye products, or rice for that matter, get used, that people inhale or even ingest some of those raw products. But does anything specifically evolve to be cooked? besides vegetation that rely on wildfire to disperse seeds. Undercooked wheat, rice and rye products can easily make their way into people's diets.

Tommy looking for pancakes at their breakfast shows how close they all were to getting infected, great writing. You see the Addlers feed the grandmother that biscuit, as Sarah and Joel head to school and work, that was the moment the old lady was infected. Edit: they didn’t have pancakes because joel forgot to get the pancake mix, which really ties in with how consuming his job was because he had to work on his birthday and couldn’t even get home by the time he promised Sarah.

The most terrifying part about the last Of us was when I found out that most of the infected are still in their minds and are aware of what's happening that just as an entire new horror to the entire situation imagine being in your mind trapped inside of an infected body and not having any control over your faquaties and just force to linger around in an abandoned buithing waiting for something alive to come in and trying to eat it against your will. For years no less

I think it affects their conscious state like psychedelic mushrooms. Ya no when u take those mushrooms; depending on how much u take; u kinda have no control or ur mind. It alters your reality. Once I took aloooot of mushrooms, & I don’t remember anything past a certain point. I was tripping hard. So yea. I think this infection would do something similar. It would take control & make u hallucinate or change ur reality like a dream.

I really don't think that's realistic at all. Such an infection probably would cause severe enough brain damage that the infected would lose their sense of self, not really having a human consciousness "trapped" or anything. The early stages would be similar to some psychotic rage state where the slightest stimulus would trigger them to lash out, and the victims are probably in a constant state of agony, fear and rage.

@C North a spontaneous evolution of cordyceps everywhere makes no sense, that's not how evolution works. the mutation would occur once, and the mutated fungus then needs to spread.
C North
C North 2 aylar önce
@Semechki for Putin All flour wouldn't be infected evenly, it would just be a roll of the dice. The more flour you consume, the more chance you have that some portion of it is infected, but even one spore would be enough. Although I would think most cooked flour would be safe. But there's also cross contamination, where raw flour might be used, such as breads that get a dusting of raw flour after being cooked, along with general surface contamination that uncooked and cooked flour products might share. And it's not really a single source infection, but rather, a spontaneous evolution of cordyceps everywhere, due to global environmental changes. Which is why it spread so rapidly.

In real life Cordyceps is mostly found in Asia. The genus has a worldwide distribution and most of the approximately 600 species[3] that have been described are from Asia (notably Nepal, China, Japan, Bhutan, Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand). Cordyceps species are particularly abundant and diverse in humid temperate and tropical jungles. So it makes sense for the outbreak to start in Indonesia. Apparently, they don't want it spreading by spores in the TV show because they don't want to cover the actor's faces with gas masks (despite the fact Pedro Pascal has shown he can act with his face fully covered). So it makes sense that they change the initial infection happening due to spores to happening due via ingestion like ergot. (Real-life Cordyceps spreads to insects via spores and unlike ergot and other poison fungi Cordyceps is edible by people and actually has health benefits). The scientist in 60s talks about ergot and other poisonous fungi that cause hallucination, hinting that this fictional cordyceps is like ergot (makes you sick via ingestion) so it makes sense that the original outbreak was spread by bread. The scientist also mentioned human immune systems being able to fight infections (notably fever). This is silly if you think about it since real-life cordyceps are from the jungle and jungles are hot and real-life fungi like coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) can infect people just fine. But suspending our disbelief, it makes sense that the first person we see infected is an old woman. Maybe many people ate contaminated wheat but only those with weaker immune systems became infected that way, but they in turn can infect more people through bites which might have a higher risk of infection?

Aren't the biscuits also equally important as she refused to eat food. She was already infected. And once infected the fungi doesn't need food itself as it is feeding off of your body and controlling your brain function so you would no longer feel the need to eat. It is connected to crops in the story as well but I feel like her not eating was another take way there.

True, but chances are she could’ve just had eaten something with wheat in it the day prior. If there aren’t spores in the tv show, I’m not sure how she would’ve gotten infected in the city at all with a fungus unless it was due to the food supply. I think the show saying it was people in the city was more likely just a guess and to calm his daughter down. Also people in the city (usually) are more likely to eat wheat products I feel like, such as making a sandwich and taking it to work

@Pizza Pizza idk, just the way she looks. 🤷‍♂️ But honestly, it’s 2023, you should be happy that they didn’t cast her as a dude from another race. (And before anyone calls me racist, I’m not. I just think that some roles require certain fits. You wouldn’t cast Lizzo as Elton John in “Rocketman”, you wouldn’t cast The Rock as one of “Charlie’s Angels”, and you wouldn’t star Tom Hanks as a main character in “Crazy Rich Asians”. And sadly enough, this is exactly the type of crap they’ve been doing to our entertainment.)

I never really thought about it but in episode 2 they mentioned the infection began in a wheat and grain factory. And the old lady in episode 1 was eating biscuits and got infected. And Joel, Sarah, and tommy were all supposed to have pancakes for breakfast. It’s possible had they eaten pancakes the flour in the mix could have the contaminants in it.

I'm just starting to see this video but the scary part is that this could be very well within the realm of possibility if parameters or random chance applies. Even without the "attack and infect any other human being" part but just "move somewhere and grow stalks and release spores", it's a scary thought if it were to occur. It's at least way more believable or possible than magical undead zombies that are rotting corpses basically and where you have to destroy the (also rotten???) brain.

Great video was always! Now we just need to know the who, what, how and where that created this fungal infection in the food products. If there wasn't a pronounced problem prior to September 26th, 2003 and then all the sudden there was, I would love to see an episode that covers this topic. Basically like a patient zero episode where once and for all events caused this systemic fungal infection in the first place. The games and now we have the TV show basically only cover the after-effects I would love to see what brought it on to begin with.

As it happened at the same in the world, I'd assume it mutated while back and stayed dormant for the specific period of time to wake up at the same time and start infecting people. So while it was dormant, it had time to travel from Indonesia to every corner of the world.

With the explanation at the start… what if Ellie’s immunity is just a slightly higher body temp as a result of the fungus mutation?
Quentin Green
Quentin Green 2 aylar önce
@TiredOfYou we are talking about a fictional event. So yes that answer suffices because refuting it would require real world science and not listing the rules of debate. Could crash bandicoot become a clicker? Doesn’t matter it’s fake and so is crash.
TiredOfYou
TiredOfYou 2 aylar önce
@Quentin Green Fundamentally, that defeats the purpose. If your answer to a refutation of an hypothesis is to say "yeah, but it's fiction so it doesn't have to make sense," you've fundamentally invalidated the entire point of thinking about the media at all. It doesn't have to make sense, and we can watch it and accept that, but in the context of analysis and hypothesized logic the entire point is to overthink it. Why is everyone so bad at not being wrong?
OctoScorpion

@Wyatt is that where they got the idea for the movie "The Girl With All The Gifts"?
Wyatt
Wyatt 2 aylar önce
Take into count that your body temp can change anytime for any reason. Our bodies are constantly changing. So as much as i like that theory, they already explained how she is immune. Her mom was bit while pregnant, Ellie was infected as an unborn baby and so the fungus intertwined with her brain and was most likely attached to her immunr system making her somewhat in control
Frostwolf103
Frostwolf103 2 aylar önce
That may explains the immunity being built differently. The intimate moment with Riley may also raise the body temperature

Flour can be used in many different ways, you can find in stores in many food categories like bread, cereal, cakes, you can also find in restaurants and fast food just by flour. Tommy did survive twice in the day by the morning at home and in the evening when he's out eating when one of the customers tried to attack the restaurant personnel and Tommy just got arrested for trying to knock out the customer that is likely infected from eating that contains the contaminated flour. If it's also believed that if the infection originated on Indonesia and evolved to infect more than just rye plants but also coffee beans for example? Indonesia is renowned to have fine flour and coffee products, a world player actually. So I can imagine that shipping contaminated goods across the world in matter of two weeks before Outbreak Day may occurs (Could be less than two weeks) and I think even in 2003 and two weeks duration before shit hit the fan, whoever makes the drugs on U.S sees nice profit to sell drugs to fight against Indonesian rabies. Like you know, that one chapter on World War Z book. The big difference between this book and The Last of Us HBO series is that the drug may be also contaminated with the fungi disease, ONE thing has in common with all of this: Ergot. This fungi disease infects via ingestion. Also Salem Witch Trials which is no way to be coincidental that this actually happened before. But the big question: How did the fungi evolves into same species trying to attack and infect them as well, I doubt Ergot does all of this so maybe this fungi is a combo with something else even if that's naturally mutated.

The only thing that shook me was their lack of mask etiquette when they found the 'flowering' infected body that was plastered against the wall. I mean, that's why they get all gross like that. To spread spores, so.. I hope to see masks on in future episodes. MY IMMERSION PLEASE
C North
C North 2 aylar önce
Masks wouldn't stop it. Even a single spore would mean infection, and there's no way you'd be able to decontaminate your body from every spore after being exposed to a cloud of spores. Eventually one would get through. That's also why they're not really making it about the spores, because it's just not logistically feasible to create a live action show with spores. And I think the easy answer is the "flowering" isn't for spores, it's for connections to the greater mycelium network, merely by branching out. Of course this should still result in potential airborne exposure, but if they did that then the whole premise of the show would be pointless, because everyone in the world would be infected already. You could look at it like if it's at a point it can be breathed in, it's because it's dry and flaking particulates that are already dead, thus cannot infect you. Also there may be only a very specific short window of flowering time, and may also require certain conditions (like lots of moisture and darkness and a warm temperature), which would make spores a rare enough occurrence that people would not worry about much. That one guy on the wall was in a clearly dry and cool basement area, missing the moisture and temperature needed to enter a flowering stage. So I'm sure at some point we might see a flowering stage in specific environments where it's suitable. It may also require more than one person to enter the flowering stage, as the flowering stage might be a resource intensive process that requires a minimal amount of infected to be present in one area, under the right conditions. Just like a mushroom might pop up in a yard out of nowhere for a few days because the conditions are just right.

Molds and other fungi are very common, but parasitic fungi not so much. There’s a big difference between a fungi entering the industrial food chain is different from a parasitic fungi spreading through spores. If you scratch the surface, the science behind CBI doesn’t hold up.
