/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */

Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul aka not your average Joel and this video we're breaking down The Last Of Us Episode 2. The series has had two really good episodes back to back and as a big fan of the game I've loved watching these first two entries. They do change some things up though and throughout the video we're gonna be going over the easter eggs, game differences and also giving our thoughts on the series so far.

Huge thank you to everyone who checked out our video last week and like that one we're gonna be saving the more spoilery easter eggs until the end so that people who haven't played the game can enjoy all the twists and turns that come up in the show. I'll give you a heads up before we hit that and we start the episode off in Jakarta all the way back in 2003.

If you cast your mind back to last week then you may remember that they did an announcement over the radio that talked about the city and how something strange was going on there. Here we see it playing out with the outbreak of the infection being studied by a doctor. This wasn't in the game and I like how the series is slowly filling in the backstory of the virus. Both the beginning of last episode and this one had completely new bits in them and it's possible that we might even get a new story slotted in at the opening of each entry that gives us way more details on the infection than what we ever got in the game.

When the title cards first shown we can see this is taking place on September 24th 2003 dating it two days before the outbreak. This of course shows how fast the virus spread and in the game we learned it was through products contain flour and yeast which we'll talk more about in just a bit. Huge shoutouts to Dyanmic Smurf on our last video for pointing out that 2003 was potentially chosen because it was one of the hottest years on record which a record breaking heat wave happening that killed 20,000 people.

Huge apologies for calling it a virus. Thanks for all the corrections on it and going forward I'll avoid using that term. Whenever stuff like this happens I wish I could go back and redo the video. Thanks for checking out the video anyway and hopefully that didn't ruin it for you.

It really rattled me how tough the clickers were, and how much they emphasized the importance of just avoiding them because dealing with them is just always so dangerous. Also loved how effective the fungus on their heads was a deflecting gunfire. If you were concerned that this was just another zombie franchise, that first encounter really puts it to bed and sets the tone that these things are terrifying, deadly monsters. The whole hive mind thing is an actual nightmare; you’re NEVER safe.

@Jason Marbach I believe it was to connect her to the "network" that the rest of that particular horde was part of. It recognized that she was infected, but not part of the network, so it essentially linked her up. Just my theory, though.

@Jason Marbach I think the point was to show the cordyceps will have an advanced level of intelligence and agency to spread rather than through invisible spores. Within 2 episodes there have been 3 subjects shown with very much “alive” cordyceps moving in the mouths. I didn’t interpret it as solely a gross-out scene.

I kinda like the hive mind thing they added, since there are no spores, it kinda balances things out. But there was a reference to spores/bloaters in a rumor "infected exploding spores all over you" told by Ellie, to which Tess said "shit I hope not". Makes me wonder whether we will end up seeing at least one scene where someone gets infected through spores.
MultiSpacki
MultiSpacki Aylar önce
@Viper I see! That’s more likely to be the reason, yes.

@MultiSpacki he checked them cause of the “hive mind”. If it’s dry there’s no “hive mind”, which would avoid a lot of infected going after them.
Sludgerat

@MultiSpacki Maybe maybe. We will see!
MultiSpacki
MultiSpacki 2 aylar önce
@Sludgerat but why did he check then before entering the museum if the fungus was dry? I think this was a hint to spores being dangerous and that they can lead to an infection if u breath them in or maybe if u breath to much of it. Because he checked if the fungus was dry so maybe when it would have been fresh there would be spores and when it dries out its not dangerous anymore u know?

I also thought it was interesting that she hurt her ankle, knowing what happens to her. It reminded me of Sarah's death and how she hurt her ankle beforehand, which is why Joel had to carry her and may have affected how they ended up where they did with the soldier. I don't know if it was intentional, but it felt like foreshadowing to me since, while watching the episode, I knew Tess was going to die (having played the games).

The professor and now her hand started to shake when they told her 14 workers were missing and the only hope was to bomb the city gave me and I’m sure many others goosebumps. The sandwich scene remind anyone of punisher season one when frank is eating tuna fish out of a bag and micro pulls out a big delicious sandwich.

I also believe that the tendrils wanting to spread to a new host is symbolism for the kiss Tess was longing for with Joel. We are teased that they are in a relationship, and in her last moments with him, she wanted to kiss him but couldn’t.

Yeah taking a kiss, something that is considered a human trait and something that generally symbolizes love or affection, and distorting it into this was a nice touch imo. I just saw that the show creators made a backstory for Tess but it didn't get to be on the show, in this backstory, she was a wife and a mother, her husband and son both got infected, she killed her husband but couldn't bring herself to kill her son so she locked him in the basement, where he probably eventually became a clicker, so I think that if Tess survived, based on this story, she'd probably start to see Ellie as a daughter as well, but would still want to see her being used for a cure in the end, since she still wants to heal her actual son, which would probably create a very interesting extra layer of conflict in the end, where Joel would have to fight and kill Tess

The major change around Tess’ death in the show was, IMO, a better send off for her character. Tess is badass, sometimes a bad person, but also has lots of good too. Tess sacrifices herself (knowing she will die anyway) and the massive explosion helps that devastation wash over you as you watch in disbelief of what’s happened and how quickly it all went down. I really enjoyed this change. Great video - thanks man.

the episode openers so far have been DOING IT for me, love em. for those of us who have played/watched Let's Plays of TLOU over and over again, Neil and Craig did a wonderful job of deepening the story, the world and the characters. I knew Tess would die this episode but not like THAT! wow!

Really like how well this show is turning out. Just the right amount of them sticking directly to the story but also straying a little like giving the intro parts to give backstory to the virus. The clickers were terrifying in this and honestly what makes it more impressive is that it was all done with practical effects. Cant wait for episode 3

Like Chernobyl, they really did a good job at making scary effect in every episode's prologue. Hope we'll get more in the next episodes. Idk for you guys, but as an Indonesian who also live in Jakarta, watching that first scene just terrified me even more, I understood every word they said (no funny accent, since they used local actors), so it made me feel like that scene happened near me. And yes, this city is f**king hot, the humidity is high. Hope my English is good.

I think it was very clear from the get that the spores would be shelved. It would be to much of a hurdle for them to have to deal with it, both the characters and production
Marcus Laughton
Marcus Laughton 2 aylar önce
@Harate I've got a feeling that one of the reasons they shelved spores is due to the gas masks. It's hard to capture an actor's performance when their face is covered up.

@Benny Costello how would CGI spores in the air similar to the games be any more difficult than animating tendrils out of an infected mouth 😅
Harate
Harate 2 aylar önce
@joseph serenson the games made it pretty clear that spores were mostly an issue in dark enclosed areas that had time to overgrow. I don’t think the tv audience would have questioned the concept. Either way the hive-mind tendril concept is cool too.

The last of us part 2 had Joel and Ellie having moth motifs on their guitars and tattoos, not butterflies so I think it's supposed to symbolize a bit differently. Still I felt like pointing out the difference

Fantastic observations! My first thought when Ellie ate a chicken sandwich that wasn't properly refrigerated was that antibiotics derived from fungus are often used to treat food poisoning and perhaps that's why she could safely eat it. Huge fan of both games. I'm thorough hooked on this show.

I hope they have the these mini episodes of the start of the outbreak every episode because it’s so cool. The Dr and the military officer did great jobs to portray the fear of what was coming. They’ve made this fungus seem so frightening like the thought of it has me more scared of things growing inside me rather than turning into a monster. Also I feel the Drs scene when she is being told the facts will sit with viewers the entire season

I really loved the creative writing in the clicker scene because when the second one went down and revealed blood on its mouth you could’ve easily been fooled by Ellie’s reveal that she was bit by it. I mentioned it on my Tumblr but another cool TLOU 2 easter egg (kinda) is the music at the end of the episode! “Allowed to be happy” is part of the part 2 soundtrack and is played in a more part 1 style in the end of ep 2! I think the choice of song especially the title is pretty significant especially cause Joel and Ellie had finally had a small moment (as mention when Joel checked his watch), and now Joel is probably going to emotionally isolate himself, but also because of Ellie’s experience of loss where everyone she knows “Has either left me or died”, and now she’s lost Tess, who was the only one of the two who was treating her nicely at this point.

This week's episode confirmed what a lot of us last week were theory crafting about, as far as the Indonesia flour link. I might be asking for too much, but I would love to see how the actual field where this particular grain was raised was contaminated with this cordyceps fungus and if it was something caused by a genetic mutation in nature or was it forced into the food cycle buy some kind of mad scientist type group or individual? That being said I do like how the showrunners are drip-drop feeding us tidbits of information at the beginning of each episode.
