/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */

Ok so The Last Of Us Episode 1 is now out and I'm so excited to talk about it. The first game is my favourite of all time and I've bought the ps3 version, the ps4 remaster and even the ps5 remake that released a couple of months. This is a game I've completed numerous times on grounded mode and the series is something I've been desperate to do a deep dive on.

Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down the first episode scene by scene and talking about all the easter eggs, hidden details and what they did differently to the game. If you haven't played it then don't worry because we won't be spoiling what happens down the line as I want you to enjoy the twists and turns as much as I did on my first playthrough.

However I may need to touch upon certain things due to characters that get name dropped here but I'll only bring them up in a spoiler section at the end of the video which I'll give you a heads up on.

i'm nice like that

Now unlike the game, the series starts off in 1968. Originally we watched as Sarah woke up in her bed and ventured about the house but here they do it differently. Rather than throwing us in at the night of the outbreak we get some backstory that wasn't even filled in in the source material. The game told us very little about the virus beyond it being cause by Cordyseps which had mutated to infect humans. These real life funghi exist in the jungle and the parasite infects insects and anthropods. Beginning in 1968 though we see a tv show in which two scientists do a big theory time about what the biggest threat to humanity is.

The first one goes off about how we may have a pandemic level event that's caused by a strain of influenza. Both games were made before Covid 19 and the creative team have kinda retroactively added this into the show to comment on it I think. The scientist mentions how airplanes are a new element that will help viruses like this spread easier and later on we see several planes flying overhead as Sarah, Joel and Tommy make their escape.

They add a lot of focus to them during the car scene and actually change up how the crash happens. Originally it was caused by another car hitting them but they do a fake out in the episode and instead have plane debris causing it.

I really enjoy the episode openings being snippets of smaller stories that happened within the last of us universe. The talk show, and the Mycologist in the ground zero city were both such cool world building, kind of lending to the show being it’s own new thing and establishing it more as a world spanning story.

I noticed that within the television version it looks like they are hinting that the fungus outbreak occurs due to tainted flour. Notice how the neighbor is feeding his elderly mother biscuits and offers some to Joel. Joel tells his neighbor that he is on an Atkins diet. Also notice that while eating breakfast Joel, Sara and Tommy only have bacon and eggs, no toast. Later on Sara visits the neighbor after school, where she's asked her to help in baking cookies. Sara leaves shortly after the cookies were baked, thus didn't eat any. So ya, I think they made that subtle change to the television version which makes it more cool. Now we know the origins on where the infections began.

Well Ellie has grown up in a harsh reality. Sarah knew her dad as her dad, and then had reality completely flipped on is head and she's watching her dad flip out and beat the shit out of people for the first time she has seen. For a kid that's a lot of change in a matter of minutes.

The Adlers grandmother wasn’t infected because she went to the hospital (future show spoilers ahead); Joel mentions to Ellie that the early infection spread through tainted yeast [edit: flour, not yeast]. The Adlers were feeding the grandmother bread/biscuits earlier in the episode, and even offered it to Sarah.

@ICU1337 I think there's a good chance that it could have worked it's way around the globe within a few days or so, or close to what we saw in the show as "everywhere at once." I think there were multiple vectors that led to transmission. There was the initial outbreak that led to contamination of food manufacturing, and how it tainted the flour. The first strain may have taken longer to infect people, evolving into quicker timeframes as it spread. Once the first waves turned, response teams were dispersed to attempt to contain it and cover it up in the media as much as possible. Before they could even figure out what was happening, it had already spread throughout the country, onto airplanes flying around the world, and shipped into grocery stores. As the fungus travels from region to region, the turning timeframe drops from several hours to a matter of minutes. I see the timeline being similar to World War Z, with it feeling like it's happening "everywhere at once" but it's actually taking several hours to a couple days to spread entirely. The shopkeeper allegedly said in Arabic that she received a call from her sister in another country. While all of this is happening, various forms of communication are collapsing as the fungus takes over major cities. The tv show takes place in 2003 instead of 2013, so that means no social media and limited internet communication. Only phone and radio basically, and information across those is getting chaotic and rapidly silent. Since Austin, TX is a major city with an international airport, it makes sense that they would be affected so quickly before they could hear any news sources besides the Jakarta report in the morning.

Cameron Pavelic 2 aylar önce
@wheezyproduct wow good catch! I didn’t even think of that. Also the “Atkins” diet Joel mentions is about limiting carbs. I thought it was just him messing around, but if he was actually on that diet that’s an additional explanation for how they avoided tainted food.

I honestly am very grateful my favorite videogame had one of the best opening episodes for a tv show adaptation, its so damn good. My only gripe is that some of the dialogue feels too rushed, however it makes sense that Joel would be very short with Ellie anyway given their situation. Never thought it would be as great as it was.

Less is more. Its like a comic book movie adaptation for Superman, Spiderman, Batman, etc. We know Uncle Ben died, we know the Waynes got mugged, we know you're from Krypton. Heard the story a million times already, just get to the point in your "new retelling" of the iconic character. Its a zombie apocalypse. We get it. Less is more so that you can actually go over things the audience needs to know within the time you have to tell a story. We really dont need a 10 minute recap of what we already know as an audience. Thats why they did what they did in some parts and, frankly, its the right call.

@isiah I saw several subversions. Her waking up at night not leading to the same sequence of events ( before the car ride), Sarah "stealing the watch" not to pawn but to fix it, Sarah walking in the rain turning out to just be a sprinkler in the foreground, the lady who helped Joel throw the bodies into the fire looked like she could be Tess, but ended up just being someone else.

@Mr. Quick Im with you for the most part. Im all for representation until its unrealistic, and in your face about it.Thats the main prob I had with part 2. Action sequence wise, and pure drama - part 2 is awesome. But I sometimes cant get past Ellie going full on rambo on entire armies, and Abby, a 19yr old girl being one of the leaders of a huge militia group lmao i mean COME ONNNN. Not happening in a million years in the real world. But look, its everywhere. Marvel/Disney are the worst offenders of this. Netflix original programming = woke propaganda. 99% of Navy Seals, Army Rangers or any kind of special ops for example are middle aged white dudes, but nowadays when a movie is made you can forget that, theyre gnna make sure a couple of trans, and black women are a part of it

I really enjoyed this first episode. Felt faster on second viewing. Great cast imo, Pedro seems to fit the role really well. I hope it continues like this. I really like how it begins with Sarah waking upin bed to beautiful sunshine, which mirrors her next time (and her last time) waking up and the world is on fire and everyone is fucked. So well done that first 35. Also, the old lady is already changing when Sarah is in the house. You see her in the background with a wide open mouth and the dog is sitting in front of her definitely noticing she's not right/the same (I see others noticed this as well) Listening to this, the only thing I think I found somewhat odd is Joel not holding onto the wrench after dropping the old lady. Ofc he wouldn't know the full scope of things at that point, but he did know things were very bad and that people can attack etc. I hope the rest will be just as good and they greenlight another asap so they can begin doing it.

Taret Time
Taret Time 2 aylar önce
@Rifle Shooter Channel global warming has been discussed in the scientific community since the 1930’s and was popularized in the early-mid 1970’s before he had any office so that lacks any truth to it whatsoever. Also the show literally mentions global warming once in reference to a potential driving force behind fungi adapting to warmer temperatures. It’s not exactly a driving theme of the show. And you can dispute anthropogenic climate change all you want but the average global temperature is higher now than it was in the 1960’s when the opener takes place so that’s not even a contentious minor point in the set up.

There's one thing that I particularly liked about the scene where Sarah is in the watch shop. You see two police cars pass, which is fairly normal. You then see a firetruck pass, which is normal as well. I was expecting to see an ambulance next, but nope... It was SWAT.

There likely weren't any documented cases of immunity before Ellie and wouldn't have any reason to assume the kid was something other than infected. That's why even the Fireflies locked Ellie up and didn't believe her at first.

The sickness was spread through flour, in the beginning they was eating biscuits, asked Sarah, asked Sarah and Joel if they wanted any, also when tommy came in for breakfast he said he thought they was having pancakes, also Joel was unable to get a birthday cake, all of them all avoided it by not eating flour products. Even Sarah did again by not eating the raisin cookies the neighbors was making. So that’s how the alders got it by eating the biscuits made of flour and again the cookies.

Theorytime: sarah was infected all along due to her frequent visits to her neighbors and exposure to the old lady but it manifested sooner in the old woman due to her feebleness. Also when trying to make sense of how her neighbors became infected, you can see sarah tremble when she ponders how frequently they possibly had to visit the hospital in order to catch it. This is reflected later in the episode when just after joel brutaly murders the gaurd arresting them and they find out ellie is already infected. For a split second before she reveals she is immune, he realizes no matter what he couldnt have saved her. Hinting the same fate was true for sarah.

Throughout the episode, they narrowly avoid eating anything containing wheat. like pankakes, cereal. aswell as when Sarah says no to a cookie from the neighbour because they contained Raisins. hense why the older lady was one of the first infected we saw as she was being fed bread by the guy.

I assumed the neighbours grandma became infected because of the biscuits she was eating. The flour was infected which ties into the whole part of them not eating pancakes for his birthday. Not having any of the cookies when they were offered and not buying a birthday cake which is why they werent infected.

The other big reason for not using gas masks is because you don't normally really want your actors to obstruct their faces and facial expressions for prolonged periods of time. It just makes sense when switching mediums Also, I found it hard to suspend my disbelief in the videogame when they mentioned it spread by spores. I remember specifically being like, "If this disease was airborne, humanity would already be fully fucked"

The 1968 scene was *mostly* made to give the viewer a brief explanation of the cordyceps fungus and how it operates and give context for it, as well as provide some foreshadowing for events to come. But the line about viral pandemics/influenza was meant to be a reference to the IRL pandemic
