After more than 20 years, I'm finally filling a gap in my childhood viewing history - FIRST TIME WATCHING The Emperor's New Groove! Walt Disney Animation Studios' turn toward a movie zany and irreverent style featuring the voices of David Spade as Emperor Kuzco, John Goodman as the good-natured Pacha, the incomparable Eartha Kitt as the conniving Yzma, and a scene stealing Patrick Warburton as Kronk! Here's my Reaction, Review, & Recap of the Disney Animated Classic!

Fun fact: Yzma being saved by the trampolin is a joke on Disney's classic trope of several villains falling from great heights to their demises.

Fun fact: When Yzma transformed into the cat and asked “is that MY voice”, that was Eartha’s genuine confusion. So watching that scene makes it even so much funnier. 😂😂

@Melissa I guess that's possible, but, well, Eartha Kit wasn't exactly fresh off the boat when she did this show. She'd been on screen plenty of times, including some voice acting for animated series, so she really should have already known what her voice sounds like recorded.
Melissa
Melissa 7 aylar önce
@HiddenWindshield I think they are referring to the playback of her lines, and how we all react like that when we're not used to hearing our own voice. Of course, that would mean they were still recording, which they probably were since they often just let the voice actors go off and say their lines over and over again in different ways or adlib, and they just keep what they like. Or...I could be wrong.

after all these years I never knew that XD thanks :D

Do you have a source for that? Because I'm 99% certain that they wouldn't be applying any kind of voice effects in the recording booth, that kind of stuff comes later in the production process.

Interesting fact: Sting forced Disney to change the ending. In the original ending, Kuzco would end up destroying a rainforest to build his summer house. He ended up writing them a letter saying "If you do this, I will resign" and it's because he's an activist who cares so much about the indigenous people of the Amazon and their homeland. Good on him for standing up Also, Kronk is hands down the best Disney sidekick. Patrick Warburton CARRIED that movie

It could explain why he later got his own sequel, "Kronk's New Groove". It's unfortunate that one was direct to video, because it was fairly good. A couple of additions to the cast for it were Tracy Ullman (comedian/singer who previously had her own sketch show) and John Mahoney (Martin Crane from "Frasier").

Didn't know Sting had that much sway on this movie, considering they cut out ALL BUT ONE of his intended songs for this movie when they decided it was no longer going to be a musical WITHOUT TELLING HIM. Sting was pissed.

We're clearly not living in the perfect timeline. If we were, for every time we entered a water slide launch, they would play "Pull the lever, Kronk!" to launch us down below. And even more of a shame there isn't a Secret Lab coaster at the Disney parks. The closest thing to it is Raging Spirits at Tokyo DisneySea

Fun fact: The original concept of this movie was about them worshipping a sun god with the god of darkness being sealed away. Yzma would of been a witch attempting to release the dark god in order to gain immortality. The whole movie was intended to be a musical and you can find a few songs from it on TRvid. They scrapped the script but clearly kept some of the concepts like the sun god symbolism in the palace and Yzmas skill at potion making.

This movie feels so unique, and we haven't gotten anything like it since, by any studio. They could've used this story in any setting, but they chose a weird modernized fantasy ancient Peru. All the characters are pretty ahead of their time, from the smart female villain to the conceited flamboyant protagonist. The direction also feels more adult, like they just wanted to make a good comedy with a moral instead of a tear-jerking merch printer with cute creatures. I don't think Disney will ever get this experimental again.

Just a fun tid bit I thought I’d share: A lot of the folks who worked on this film were once a part of the Orlando animation studio, “The Magic of Disney Animation,” and towards the end of the hand drawn era, they worked on films like Lilo and Stich, Brother Bear, and Tarzan, none of which were technically musicals (even though Phil Collins scores are fire). I’ve always felt that that specific group of filmmakers and animators made really unique films under the Disney umbrella. I miss that era a lot.

Wonderful reaction John. This Disney Animators at their most Looney Tunes which I really wish they did more of in their movies. Also, I’m SO glad the director and writer for this movie are reuniting to tackle the upcoming Garfield animated film starring Chris Pratt. Really hope they can channel that same fast paced energy they brought here and inject it into such an knowingly un-energetic character.

I love this movie and it holds a really special place in my heart. When I went away to summer camp at age 11, it was the first time I had ever been away from my family. I got homesick immediately, and would cry when I was by myself between classes. I had times when I considered going and getting the camp to call my parents to come get me. But after a couple of days, I was able to make it through it, and had a good time. On the last night before we went home, we all gathered in the main lodge building and watched The Emperor’s New Groove and had a really chill time. This movie, to me, represents me making it through a time I didn’t think I would, and it feels like a triumph. I showed it to my kids a couple of months ago and they loved it. HUGE MISTAKE! They ended up doing a binge of The Emperor’s New School on Disney+, and that show is just super obnoxious lmao.

I'm going to have to track down a copy and go watch the full length but I didn't want to wait! This has remained one of my favorite Disney movies. It really leans into the kind of Looney Tunes vibes with a lot of the gags (the balloon animal one sticks out but there are so many) and sort of meta/fourth wall jokes, and it's irreverent enough that what could have been a total disaster really works. It makes me miss this kind of animation, too. I've definitely read that this was a movie they never really intended to make but then somehow did, and they will never make a film like it again, but to me this has always felt like a secret stack of gold that Disney doesn't even know they have.

This was a COOL film and even an AWSOME reaction. I laughed all the way through the film, and even though its been years since I seen the film. This reaction reminded me how much fun I had watching the film.

When this came out I was like "ugh that sounds so stupid" so I refused to watch it, but when I did finally get to it, it became one of my favorite Disney animations! So funny and highly quotable. An underrated classic.

This has nothing to do with Emperor's New Groove but has everything to do with Disney I feel like either we should get a Disney Plus continuation or a sequel of inside out because inside out a great film

This movie initially was supposed to be a dark, epic drama, like Lion King. In the original story, Yzma was gonna be obsessed with beauty and she knew the sun was responsible for her aging, so she wanted to kill the Emperor (since he represents the sun in their culture) and present him as a sacrifice to the god of death (or darkness, I don't remember exactly which one) in order to kill the sun. Btw, Yzma was gonna have a villain song (which lost purpose when they changed the story completely) and it's AMAZING! It's called "Snuff Out the Light" and it talks a little about how her father was a mortician and taught her all about magic. It's on TRvid, so I definitely recommend you check it out!

You and Greg should DEFINITELY watch Klaus together on your channel! It really surprised me how much I enjoyed it. I even shed a few tears. It's funny and emotional and you're right, a real breath of fresh air with the animation. Loved this reaction as well. This was one of my favs growing up.

I've watched this movie dozens of times, and yet I never really thought about the way music is integral to this movie like you point out in your post-recording thought. Love your take, and so glad to see how much you enjoyed this personal favourite of mine!

This is my favorite Disney movie ever! Great idea for a video!

Love this movie! The humor is top notch, and the trampoline is one of my favorite ever ridiculous plot devices. Kuzco being an emperor and being voiced by David Spade makes it easier to see Pacha and Kuzco as equals, but then scenes hit where you're reminded that Kuzco is just a teenager raised by a maniac (albeit a fabulous one), and Pacha's just a straight up good dad and good person taking care of a kid who's far from home.

any movie with Patrick Warburton is great but Eartha Kitt and David played off each other so well

Klaus is such a beutiful movie, both story and visually! I've recommended it to many people to watch around Christmas cause it has this nostalgic feeling in it from the 90's! Hope we can be with you on that journey! Much love from Sweden

If anyone ever doubted this was really your first time watching this movie it was more than confirmed when you didn't shout "Pull the lever Kronk!" with Yzma. XD

This movie is one that's fun to watch over & over!! So many quotable lines!! "No touchy!", "Llama face!!", "Wrong lever!", "Is that my voice???" "I never liked your spinach puffs!". The 4th wall breaking is so hilarious too!! David Spade is not my favorite comedian but his sarcastic tone for Kuzco works & John Goodman is a good balance as Pacha. Eartha Kitt as Yzma is so perfect as the villain as well as Patrick Warburton as Kronk as her hapless henchman.

You should find a copy of and react to the documentary “THE SWEATBOX”. It’s the secret documentary about the making of this movie that went to festivals but Disney buried it. It was co-directed by Sting’s wife, it’s fascinating.

One of my favorite gags/details of this movie was when Kronk is hiding in plain sight as he carried the note to his theme song, the background wall he’s leaning against had statues and artwork pointing their fingers at Kronk’s hiding spot. That and the cactus that Yzma poured her poison into turned into a llama. This movie is amazing 💕

This will forever be one of my favorite Disney movies even though no one ever thinks of it when they think "Disney". It's pretty damn near perfect in every aspect, in my personal opinion. I really appreciate your detailed review at the end of your video.
