The Half-Life and Portal timeline is long and complicated. Although these stories are set in different locations on Earth, they connect over the years. From Black Mesa's early years and their competition with Aperture Science, to the fall of Aperture and GLaDOS' attempts to keep The Combine out of her facility. This timeline has many important events.

In this video, I explore the whole history and story of Half-Life and Portal. Although Chell and Gordon Freeman never meet, their actions have a huge impact on Aperture Science, Black Mesa and the multiverse.

The clear difference between the portal series very comedic story and the half life series very serious story is absolutely hilarious. One moment he’ll be talking about black mesa opening portals to other dimensions and then he’ll be talking about Cave Johnson ranting about lemons.

The only thing i have to add is In Portal Bridge Builder, it is mentioned that the "Rope" type bridge material is made of tightly twisted shower curtains. Because they had a lot of them laying around, and they were very strong with some elasticity. This implies that Aperture Fixtures (at least initially) Shower Curtains were extremely strong as a safety measure in the bathroom to prevent falling via grabbing onto the curtains. The military contracts (again, initially) were probably to use the same fabric/material of the shower curtains for military purposes.

Tbh i thought they would relate to optical camouflage like since curtains are for privacy, one of the best ways to keep that privacy is making the things behind it invisible. But a super durable material also makes sense

@Vortigaunt i dunno... Black Mesa managed to stumble their way into teleporting into a border world in between dimensions but couldn't teleport within their own dimension. They had to use Xen as a slingshot to do that, and it wasn't really accurate. It's no better than the Combine's teleportation tech. Aperture figured out how to make point to point wormholes with our dimension. They not only did that, but they also did so in a handheld device. And then there's the Borealis...

To be fair, Black Mesa’s teleportation was far superior to Aperture, being able to enter another dimension. Also, it was Russel who made the first gravity gun, so it’s not a win for either. Russel ending up making the gravity hand guns before the combine invasion lol

Your first experiment in telepathic portal technology: jump off the tallest structure within 1km², then as you fall focus on your destination. Fun Fact: According to Aperture Desk Job, Cave Johnson actually *did* get to be turned into a machine, in which his intelligence was uploaded into a big head. Unfortunately, he scared all his scientists away. Oh, and at the end of the game, there's a small cutscene of him humming along with the newly-invented turrets, teaching him to sing, which makes me think he's the Turret King.

@Deimos she says she has, but ive always read that as a lie/falsehood, personally, because of the turret opera afterwards being sung from caroline's perspective to her daughter chell. in my mind, either glados is unaware that she cannot remove her being from caroline or she is lying to chell in order to justify pushing chell out into the world again (and thus away from her mother). personally, i think the former of those is more likely but the second is more of a satisfying emotional conclusion

One of my earliest childhood memories was sitting on my father's lap as he played through the original Half-Life. Since then I have played all of the games but never truly had a full understanding of the lore and how it was all connected. The amount of work that had to have gone into this video is remarkable. Why would the combine be interested in earth? Only place with casserole. There's a physics theory that basically states that all casserole are holograms originating from the one, true, originator casserole - sometimes known as 'dark casserole'. Seeking this power, the combine invade earth. But Gordon somehow pre-empted this, using the microwave he must have caused the dark casserole to skip over into a parallel dimension - 'dinnerasium'. The combine have no means to reach this dimension due to lactose intolerance.

This is the first video of yours that I've come across and safe to say that I am incredibly impressed! I can't imagine how much time and effort this beautifully intricate video took and I'm honestly quite thankful that you took that time. I'm a university student so I actively try to seek out longer videos like this in order to have something to listen to in the background while I'm studying. Your narration through the video was pleasing to listen to and very easy to follow along, even for someone who was studying at the same time. But I did find myself listening into the video every now and again and thus decided to rewatch it due to my own intrigue. Thank you for this video. I was a kid when I played portal 2 but was too young to play/know Portal 1 and the Half Life franchise. It's a beautiful story and I hope it comes back. So many of these old stories deserve a rebranding/remaster. This is one of them.

As a fan of half life 2 and portal 1/2, I never dived into the half 1 story or anything beyond. You captivated me for almost three hours and I now have this ache of wanting more. Such great storytelling with the ppl at valve. I just hope one day for a continuation in the story but not crossing fingers. 😢 Either way terrific job on this video!

This one was extremely interesting, as I grew up with Half-Life 2 being my first Steam game I have ever played. Being a child, I never really understood the story fully, nor played through all of them chronologically in a good timeframe for me to remember. Having this video was a great way to fill in the blanks that I had regarding the story. The animations you did for the video were amazing, this feels like a Half-Life narrarated movie and it was great. of note with the name "the Combine" - it's actually a bit of a double meaning. While they combine every species they come across into their forces, they also act almost like a combine harvester - traveling across the field of the multiverse, ripping out everything they find for the harvest.

@Leszek Janiszewski Those are Metro Cops, Not Combine Soldiers, Metrocops are base Humans, who work for the combine in exchange for awards, or "Perks", as they call them, Refer to the mods Entropy zero, and Entropy zero 2, for you to play as one of em'. But yeah, Metro cops are BASEline humans, Combine Soldiers, Stalkers and More are Gene-edited.

Which is also a correction for the author of the video - Barney was not just so happen to be "working" on the day Gordon arrived 1:38:14, he was undercover. Real combine soldiers are modified versions of humans, with altered physique and mental capacity, fused together with their combat suits. Barney was disguised.

Excellent culmination to the series. An interesting side project would be a look at the world and lore of Infra, a Source-engined puzzler-explorathon with more than a couple of nods to Half-Life for those who’ve not come across it. It’s pretty much the same thing except you’ve a camera instead of a gravity gun and the environment is your enemy.

One tiny tiny detail you forgot is that it was infact the g man who pushed doctor breen to use the specified crystal and that’s why he’s at the facility early on. They had a crystal they were planning to use and on that morning, doctor breen was approached by gman with the purer crystal and insisted this be used.

@mastergabyx it’s a good theory! I’m not entirely sure what the difference was. Obviously with it being far more ‘purified’ I’m under the illusion they were pushing for this residence cascade for whatever reason. We haven’t quite reached the climax of why this all happened and who gman really is / who does he work for. I know some was explained in epistle 3 but it seems since the Alyx game that they’re about to take it down a different route! I’m hoping that there is far more portal involvement (the game) I want to hear more reference to aperture / maybe even see it! And for questions like this one to be answered in a future half life game. I think portal as a series has served its purpose and that half life needs to finish the story once and for all

My personal head cannon with GladOS is that she has this resentmen against the facility because Caroline was forced to upload her consciousness into a machine and her personality was suppressed by this anger and hatred while the transfer is being done. Meaning, GladOS is just a very angry and resentful AI because of her "unconsenting transfer" decades ago.

I like how certain player-choice events in the games are made canon here to make sense, plot-wise. For example, Gordon Freeman blowing up the casserole, or putting the can into the trashcan, while the players had the choice to either not do the first h thing or throw the can at the cop.

Really cool video! I thought I knew most about the Half Life universe, but I learned a lot here! Such impressive storytelling. There is so much that Valve can do with this story. I wonder if they will eventually use Adrian Shephard again in the future. I heard there was a game in development starring him and Father Grigory trying to escape Ravenholm or something, which sounds cool. But like many other Valve games they canceled the project. Out of all the characters, the G-Man in my opinion is the most intriguing and mysterious character ever created. I am curious what they will do with him.

I always felt like Aperture was always an analogue for Valve. Brilliant products that push the bounties, only to spawn a wave of imitation that floods the market. Overly testing products and getting them stuck or scrapped. The gold standard that fell down because of its own expectations.

To make sense of the multiverse stuff with portal and half-life, I like to think of places like Xen and Earth to be different realms in the same universe and the multiverse is filled with multiple similar universes. So there would be 1 version of the combine for each universe and the combine just travel through realms
