I'd be a bit nervous to park a Tesla in my garage - out of fear my home would "spontaneously" burn down. Good Gosh.

They are known for blowing up, in accidents might be higher risk.

Heard it had been involved in a prior crash and was still being driven

That's very common. In Minnesota, they're called, "salvage title" vehicles. Usually, they don't burst into flames, though. It's pretty easy to see and smell a ruptured gas line. Not so easy to see battery damage inside an EV battery, though.

car was it over 10 years old? hmmmm. the 12 volt lead acid battery compartment is what burned. makes one wonder if he tried to install a Lithium battery in place of it. Oh ya there is also a resistive heater in those older cars. maybe it fried!?

The bad thing about old batteries, they sometimes catch fire

@SF10 Pilot But, you can see and smell gasoline leaks. You can't see or smell a ruptured battery pack.

Had a phone 8yrs old (still buttons!!). was drowned 2x and hit countless times. Take one guess how often it caught fire?

I don't understand why they even bother putting water on them. Once an electrical fire starts, there's no putting it out.

@Mark Plott I see. So, Florida hurricane damage to EV batteries, that's always sabotage?
Marty Frazer

@Mark Plott Fire trucks need water tanks 10 times bigger then today, then we're all good. If most people drive EVs, fire trucks will need water tanks 100 times bigger than today. I'm sure that'll be no problem in desert areas like California.

@Walden - nope SAND is nor COLD enough. in the PAST they have used Liquid Nitrogen to rappidly cool the car , and some Firefighters use DONK tanks w/ water.

First we don't know the history of this car. Gasoline cars have similar issues but don't make headlines. EVs may burn, but don't explode like gasoline. Man bites dog is a headline.
Marty Frazer

@Joe Bloe Probably because of the AI aspect, and the amount of water needed to extinguish EV fires.

You can smell and see gas leaks. Not so with EV batteries.
