This week on Rebuild Rescue we’re diving right back into our Cessna 401 project! After over 15 years of being exposed to the elements outside we will finally be bringing this airplane inside our new hanger to start the cleaning and repair of the engines!

After the insanely disgusting job of blowing as much bird debris out of the exposed engine as possible, the engine is finally starting to look clean, and the turbo is accessible enough to get the oil feed line off and start working on getting the turbo to spin freely.

Check out our brand new merch store!

@Dick Trickles We means more than one person, you see. I took that to mean that a few of the people involved here have got an A&P license. Your repetition of the question looks like you're setting up a little "gotcha" about the presenter here not having a license but, as I'm sure you know, he is entitled to work on the aircraft under the supervision of a certified person.
Christopher Bowyer-Meeder
I can honestly say watching your first video I thought to myself, “of course you get it started, otherwise you wouldn’t post this video.” Seeing the outcome made me genuinely appreciate the fact that you bring us, the viewers, along for the entire journey. I’ve had a TRvid account for over a decade now, and have only subscribed to about half a dozen channels. I subscribed to yours on the spot. I look forward to seeing you get this bird in the air!

Twin Cessnas are notorious for having rotted out engine mount beams caused by exhaust leaks. There were some airworthiness directives that addressed the problems. It's quite an extensive project to replace those beams as they extend back to the spar inside the wing.
Charles G Stockmeister
@Conrad †† to Conrad as I have posted before I already dropped this channel in my opinion Rebuild Rescue and it s presenter are incredible in the legal sense that aircraft model without the main Spar repairs by certified rebuilders and amateur tinkering with it only makes it worse as for the engines they have a maximum service life and regular service interval that must be maintained for airworthiness all this takes beaucoup bucks the question is does he have them already or is he going to use yours and mine?? He is a quote monetizing content provider!!! So is your local Philharmonic Orchestra so is your local movie theater so is the nearest bar and strip club so is your TV and radio not my dollars to any, not today I can't spare it cqcq over and out
Conrad ††
Conrad †† Aylar önce
@Charles G Stockmeister I'm not sure that is fair, it is entirely possible that he is the local aviation mechanic, he got a financial backer off the back of the large number of views, one whothen agreed to either fund or supply partly repairable airframes for him to restore, they monetise the airframes they monetise the onsale - it could be the owners of the airport for all you know. I know you say they are in his name but that may be just a contractual thing to allow him to (legit) do the videos, then sell them.

@Charles G Stockmeister I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who's come to these conclusions. I do feel bad for those who have handed over their hard-earned dollars, especially after hearing the vague references to charitable activities while soliciting donations.

Great story! Watching the episodes in order; can't wait to hear that first engine start! One comment. A "hanger" is something that you use to hang up clothes in your closet. A "hangar" is a building used to shelter an airplane.

Awesome channel! I know nothing about airplanes but I find this to be most interesting, especially the fact that someone would be willing to take on a project like this! A bit of what I hope is constructive criticism, however. I believe that your viewers would be well served by you giving a little more credence to safety, and especially the proper use of appropriate PPE. I follow other channels of this nature, car/truck rescues, etc., and you are not alone in this regard. I would hope that there would be some younger folks subscribing to channels of this nature and this may be the only exposure they get to safe work practices. Please keep up the good work!

After hearing comments that someone, with aviation knowledge and experience, had the forethought to take the numbers off the tail wing, and used it to identify this plane was brilliant. Your comments concerning that 'this plane' had not flown is probably correct, but the missing log books, might also be attached to the phantom plane that is using this planes' identification numbers.
Chris T
Chris T 4 aylar önce
I doubt that happened. The Flight Tracking websites are notorious for "phantom" flights, especially with aircraft that have shorter registration numbers because when flying VFR, ATC will sometimes "shorten" the registration they put in the system since it's not required to have the full one in or put the wrong one in and not correct it because it's all done "on the fly" and at the end of the day doesn't really matter that much.

Hey man, this is a pretty awesome undertaking. Your other videos I have watched from time to time with the vehicles reminded me of what my grandfather did in the last 20-30 years of his life or so, before there was even internet. It's kind of hard for me to watch those, cause I still miss him, and those vids remind me a lot of the few times I went with him to do those things as a kid. But airplane engines? Wow man. I decided to finally subscribe and I wanna see you get this free plane. Remember your goggles and mask. Yup, I know, it's a pain. But take it from someone that has had glass/metal shards repeatedly bounce off his goggles (and some even stuck into them) when repairing technology stuff.... You want those things protecting your eyes/mouth/nose. Promise.

One being a great way to get the bird crap off the plane and out of your face. come on, be safe.

As an aircraft engineer I'm watching this with the peverse thought that at some point realisation is going to kick in about the AD and also the amount of corrosion you're going to have to address. This plane is write off. But the engines might be good for a speedboat! Now there's an dea worth thinking about.

@Rav3nX I agree. The manuals and supervision is what is missing is my point. Unlicensed guys can be just as smart and do just as good work, sometimes better. But I agree with you. If that makes sense

If it were me, I would remove the propellers also, just in case.

Hey Brother, two things. First, a pressure steamer is the way to go with cleaning that bird. Do the entire outside, from top down, then do the engine areas. Second, the very best penetrating solution is something you make at the shop. 1 part acetone to 1 part transmission fluid. Steam clean the turbos and soak it with that solution. They'll break free.

Tom 4 aylar önce
@ShroomiestShroom good luck pressure washing or sand blasting a closed engine and trying to make it run afterwards. His goal is to clean it up, make it run so he gets it, not to get every little piece of dirt off of it. T he engine will have to be disassabled at some point to replace all the gaskets and seals
ShroomiestShroom 4 aylar önce
thats just a bad choice for this plane, very expensive for what can be done with a pressure washer or sand blaster, the reason they use that on classic cars is because the rubber and plastic parts are not made anymore, you cant buy them, instead you have to preserve everything you can. Everything is still available to buy for these engines, waste of money dry-ice blasting.

In case no other A&P’s mentioned it already, I seem to remember seeing two leads running to at least one of the mags. That would indicate to me that they are shower of sparks ignition rather than impulse coupled. Bright side, no impulse couplings to stick or fail. Downside: there’s a vibrator box which sends the “shower of sparks” through the retard points for starting; this all relies upon battery power, and upon another set of points within that box. So, rebuilding the mags may not be enough. Also, that is generally the left mag which has that system. The right mag should be off for starting unless it also has a starting circuit, which I haven’t seen, but is possible. My point here being, for the sake of making the engine run, you could rebuild/repair the LH mag, make sure that the shower of sparks box is working, and fire it up on the LH mag only. Once it’s running throw the RH mag switch on and see if it works. To test that start box, disconnect the starter cable and hit the start button with the master on. You should hear a high frequency “buzz” from wherever it’s located on that airplane. My guess being somewhere in the engine nacelle.

@1one3 Racing Expecting it to be flight ready only by the efforts of this guy is not logical I agree. But after getting the engines running and taking the ownership of the plane, he may find some sponsors to raise money to work on it Or he could sell it (at a reasonable price) to someone who would be willing to spend money to make it airworthy (again only if the price is right). Getting this airplane for free will be a huge head-start and will bring up opportunities. Let's see where it is going to go.
PointlessMiracle 4 aylar önce
@1one3 Racing yes, but a full restoration on video would probably make more money than the cost. Also, it will be worth more fully restored than 130k. Assuming that one isn’t freshly rebuild. So for you it won’t be wise, for them, maybe

Been waiting on a follow up video on this 401, great video. I keep reminding myself that you are just trying to get it running, the A&P side of me keeps depressing me with the expense of what it would take to get it flying again. As far as it being dirty, I bet some of the Radial engine guys that work or have worked on the big ones are probably saying "that's not dirty", I know for myself, having worked on a lot of P&W JT9D engine equipped airplanes, they get pretty grimy under the cowls, and if there isn't a puddle of oil under the engine, bring out a case of oil, and start adding. Abandoned airplanes cry out to airplane guys, they look so sad just sitting and rotting away, as a mechanic you ask yourself, "could I make her fly again", they pull at your conscience. You see, pilots fly airplanes, but mechanics make them fly, it would be difficult to scrap one that hasn't been wrecked or crashed.

Oh, and please get some decent overalls, gloves, masks and eye protection.

@John Hogan actually you're wrong somebody has to have a license there has to be paperwork associated with any parts put on the airplane... That's the magic...he's not representing himself as an average shade tree mechanic he's working on an airplane and he's doing things way out of the scope of an owner... You know if you pull your head out of your ass there's a whole world out there.

@John Hogan I agree with you general aviation is dying away because of the the cost associated with it. And then you have incompetent pilots.and you have morons like this guy who is trying to make it look like anyone can work on an airplane.

As a rotary-wing mechanic of 7 years, I could say that working on an aircraft that dirty and corroded is an aviation mechanic’s worst nightmare haha. Great videos! I look forward to seeing this bird start

Awesome project man! I can guarantee you the main tools you'll be using is either a sledgehammer or a torch on those!😂😂

I appreciate you talking about it "being a part of the family." This is like and old barn find car that has history in it. Sometimes, just seeing it run again is a sort of closure. I promise the guy feels ashamed for the condition. It may never fly, but it will yield a win.

Just had an idea come to mind: Collab with AmmoNYC to detail the in- and outside of the Cessna. He‘s got plenty experience with horrible barn/field-find scenarios and has even compounded a 707 once, hence knows his way around aircraft too. Plus added bonus, he‘s in the northeast as well!

I noticed from the first video, when you were in the cockpit, you picked up some charts and approach plates on the floor below the pilot's seat--if you check the dates on plates, it should tell you when the aircraft last flew, since those charts used to be revised and re-issued several times a year, thus the date on the charts should be the last year the A/C flew.

I'm an automotive and small engine guy, and I spend a lot of my time playing around with free/super-cheap junk. I always love the rush of bringing something back from the dead, but I can't imagine the incredible amount of added work required when your project "thing" is a freakin' airplane! When something goes wrong with some of my old junk, it's very rarely on fire and absolutely never IN THE AIR when it happens, so mad respect to you guys for doing what I do times about ten thousand. Way cool.

@Jim Chesnutt You are so right, Jim. Certification is another major obstacle to success. The FAA makes it so. Generally, it just involves pouring more money into newer parts. That first taxi test and hi-speed run on the runway will reveal a lot. Wait til he drop checks the gear while on jacks. Lots of maybe's in this project.

Regardless if its cost effective or not its an interesting project and if it generates enough video traffic, the monetary gains could be well worth mucking around just to get the engines spinning!

I think that's what they're betting; this and other projects will be interesting enough that revenue and donations will make it financially feasible. Any accountants wish to comment on whether or not money spent on parts for the airplane are tax deductible as business expenses for the channel? :P

I'm curious, was the plane allowed to sit in a parking spot for 17 years for free? Before taking ownership, you may want to check with the airport that there's not 17 years of unpaid parking tickets. Also clean out that vac's filter.
buzzerd x
buzzerd x 4 aylar önce
@Gary also parking 20-50 a day to 150 a month at a small airport 150-500 a day at a big airport
Gary 4 aylar önce
I was wondering the same thing, Will. A tie-down for a twin at a decent airport could easily run $100 (or more) a month. There could be a lien on the airplane for $20,400 at that rate, payable by whoever might try to take possession of it--in fact, that may be where the logbooks went: when the bills weren't paid, the airport authority went on board and seized the books, holding them until someone tried to buy or sell the A/C. I've seen this before--airport seized a plane, salvaged the engines, rest of the A/C went to the scrap metal yard.

@David Cohen I dont agree fixing the wing spar is a lot less expensive if you do it yourself. and thats fine because you arent gonna fly it lol but someone will buy it. especially after an IA looks at it and calls it good.
David Cohen
David Cohen 4 aylar önce
@Antwan1398 as you know he did not look into the inside of the plane yet and he has to put fix the wings on inside which is going cost he $75.000 alone each Chair and carpet and window its all the little things that are going add up fast what time frame do you think it will take him to have that plane ready 1 year more and its going be hard work and will it ever be fit to fly? i hope he makes a lot of money but i would never fly that plane once he done bad feeling in my gut the plane going brake a part this is going brake then that part way to old and to save money he wont test them or replace them.

Really cool what your doing. I have been an Air Traffic Controller and Aviation Safety Inspector for 37 years. I hope you were certified to operate the tug. Not that it would matter too much now ( cause it's done) but you need to have an FAA operators license to operate a tug. I subscribed in hops to see you get it flying too. Good Luck. Hope upgrade to ADS-B isn't a killer either.
Caleb P
Caleb P 3 aylar önce
Nah, small airports - tugs are anyones game lol.
SOAPMAN#4 4 aylar önce
@dameramu True. Since he didn't say what airport he was at, I made a general description and comment. Not trying to condemn or throw any shade. Just commenting. I hope he gets it running and fly's it out of there.
dameramu 4 aylar önce
That only applies to part 139 certificated airports, there are plenty of airports that don't require a license or even any training to operate a tug. It would also be extremely impractical to operate a tug at many of those places, but that's besides the point.
