I was part of a prison ministry with my campus ministry during undergrad. Easily one of the most humbling, incredible experiences ever. Seriously, I think everyone should do something in helping with a prison ministry at least once. It’s intimidating at first, but once common interests are discovered, barriers become broken very fast. The inmates looked forward to every time visitors came. US jail system really doesn’t work. That’s because it’s private owned business and not governmental. It’s a hard one to figure out, because why should criminals deserve to be given better lifestyles and opportunities than good people who didn’t rob, rape or murder someone. But in my country, a prison cell is basically a hotel room. It cuts down repeat offences by like, 65% or something. So I guess it does work. But whenever someone who raped or murdered someone says ‘we all deserve a second chance’, all I can think of is the innocent person that will never get a second chance because of you.

And +1 to all the comments here - our society needs to rethink how we can change the concept of putting people in jail. If I look at the guy in minute 8 just as an example, he seems like a totaly fine guy... so sad to think they will spend their lives there... Lots of respect for all the people who made this video possible, including the employees of the prison that had the courage to let this happen (not sure all prisos would do that)! People like to undermine prisoners and think themselves as better. A lot of them just made some really bad choices, got dealt a shit hand in life but want better for themselves. One of them did burglary at 16, brain ain't even developed yet at that age. They don't deserve to be treated like they do at a place that should be about rehabilitation and finding back to your true self. When good things happen it tend to spark that light to do better. The show about Gordon Ramsay starting up a bakery in prison shows that exact thing as well. It's important, people on the outside and ignorant people tend to forget that these are someones sons, loved ones and family members as well. If you got no prospects, something to focus on, drive and people actually talking to you... How are you ever going to progress? People have went mad because of the isolation due to Covid, this has been some of these peoples lives for years confined in a much tighter space with constant stress around them and way less freedom. Really happy to see what The Professor did for these men.

Excellent. Thank you for going, and thank you for showing their viewpoints. You did an excellent job of showing casing humanity, both yours and theirs. Well done. Respect to you and the film crew, and the staff who allowed this to happen!

Charlee Summers you’re overthinking it. Most prisoners are like you and I. They’re normal people. Some make bad choices, but there are a lot of people who shouldn’t be in prison right now but are. Our criminal justice system is horrible

Gotta give it to the professor, and those awesome prisoners, making bad choices does not make u a bad person, you're just there to pay for your mistakes, it showed in these videos what kinda people they are and how great their conversations were. Shoutout to the professor for showing that.

When I was a kid my boxing coach was a prison guard and he used to take us in to various prisons to put on exhibitions so they could feel normal. We actually understood what he was doing and he our coach was very well liked by inmates and citizens alike. I understand how very very important it is for the professor to do this and I think it's huge in their lives.

9:25 That's mind blowing. I feel like I've wasted 11 years of my life and it can be depressing thinking over what experiences, people and things I could have had in that time and how everyone has moved on to better things and left me behind. But knowing there are other people out there who have also wasted time and also haven't achieved anything is kind of reassuring in a way.

The best thing about this experience is not even that professor showed up, but that he created memories with other humans in a way no other insider/outsider could or would do. They'll also have a lot to talk about for YEARS.
@robertchiarizia9463
Great video Professor. Thanks for visiting the brothers behind the wall. I lived eight years in concrete steel and glass. Just the presence you bring there with you helps us all deal with that world a little better. Like, we get to see a normal person every once in awhile, Remember what normal people are like, how they carry themselves, appreciate the world is not all bad. Respect to you braddah. Deuces.
