For the driving experience I’d go with the cayman. Honestly they’re a joy to drive like a go cart. Handling is unreal.

@RMP1 I've had both a 987 Boxster and a 987 Cayman ( my current daily driver) I much prefer the Cayman. The drive feel is similar but the closed body has a bit more rigidity than the open top - and it just feels more sorted and aerodynamic

Was at my local specialist a week ago for a service. I talked to the mechanic and said how the 997 is looking better and better as it ages. He told me to stick with my Cayman 987S as they are seeing a few 997's coming in with bore scoring, but not a single Cayman with this issue. Interesting bit of insider knowledge...

I think it’s the colour makes a big difference to been noticed I think if the cayman was the same colour as the 911 you would get the looks 👍

True. Not many people who don't own a porsche know the difference between models. Even when you do know a cayman from carrera, they look so similar that it takes a second to realize what you're looking at.

True. Dark blue is a nice color, but it is not a color that would make a lot of people look, like the Laguna Seca Blue.

I’d lean towards the 987, would find it hard to choose between the Cayman and Boxster. Lean to the latter for those days when you can drop the roof and enjoy the noise.

Please be aware that the 987 does not feature a prominent engine/exhaust sound. You might want to think about upgrading the exhaust.

I got a Boxster and sometimes I wish I had a Cayman because of its body lines working better with more spoilers and wings. But driving around in a windy road or in the city with my girlfriend, is kind of a luxury that a coupe would not provide. However, that luxury is really enjoyed for a few minutes before the sun burns us, haha. So, it's really an individual choice. But I think the real concern is model and generation. 987.2 doesn't have IMS. 2005 987 has a potentially upgradeable IMS. The S models are quicker but are prone to bore scoring causing expensive repairs. My 2005 non-S has been Toyota-level reliable at 120k+ miles.

I owned a 996C4 for about 10 years. Sold it to buy a 987.2 Cayman (2.9 liter). The 911 was faster, but the Cayman is a true sports cars. Track lap times about the same due to superior handling.

Another great video Satch.👍😎.. been waiting for this type of video for a while now.. i think the only reason 911 gets more looks is the colour.. would look better with spoiler on back but that's my opinion.. I've spent £100's on my 2010 987.2 in last couple years (minor faults and shifter cable replacement as a pro-active measure not breakdown luckily). but she's my daily drive and has over 70k on her now.. Shes currently in for service and new injectors (had on/ off misfire for last few months) so I'm expecting a hefty bill.. but like you say don't buy one if youre not expecting to pay for the enjoyment.. hopfully this last hiccup is my last one for a while..🤞🤞

Great video and very interesting real world comparison. I am in my third year of Cayman S ownership, an `06 ;like yours, and other than oil changes, have had to spend zero on it so far. Not even a small bulb. Amazing. I mentioned this to you before but IMS bearing problems are almost a non issue with any Cayman from `06 onwards. Can be an issue on the older model 997 design however. Bore scoring definitely something to look out for , and gear shifter cables are best swapped out on older cars as a preventative measure.. I previously owned a 997 Carrera like yours, but prefer the simpler, purer Cayman manual experience. I have a full Capristo exhaust on mine and it sounds awesome.

I'm willing to bet the difference in looks you get is due to color, not body. Yellow and Miami Blue are both very loud compared to the Cayman's blue.

@Akolawole Omoba Just semi lucky to fall into navigating for that guy. Apparently only 2 1972 911S were imported into Australia originally. this was one of those 2. He sold the car a few years ago now and made a killing on selling it. I think he bought it for $65k AUD and sold for something like $120k. It had a 3.2 or 3.4 engine with mechanical injection. The injection got dumped for carbys as they are easier to tune and hold their tune. I saw the car for sale about 2 years ago and that guy wanted $150kAUD for it.

Another great and informative video. I had this dilemma a year ago now. I liked the looks of both cars but the 911 had that long Porsche heritage - it is nearly everyone's idea of what a Porsche is. But in the end I bought a beautiful white Cayman. And the reason for the choice was very simple. A sports car, in my mind has two seats. Add that to the mid-engine handling and the decision was made. No regrets.

99% of the general public think the Cayman is a 911 anyways. I think its even prettier myself with a tucked in and chiseled rear end. I certainly would not car what other 911 owners thought and getting caught up in that rat race of model snobbery.

Thanks for the info on some maintenance costs. This is very, very useful for prospective owners to realise what costs can arise. Not enough people show this & concentrate on new cars but I’d imagine in reality there are far more people who are going to spend £20k-£30k on a used car than £80k-£120k on a new one. Whilst it’s entertaining to ‘window shop’ expensive new cars, it’s very interesting and relevant to get real life views, comparisons and running costs on the cars that we really can buy. That doesn’t mean boring cars of course! 😉

3 years ago, I had a '007 911-C4S and a '006-Cayman-S. Of course, the 007-911 C4S had more power, and the '06 Cayman S handled a bit better (being mid-engined), but the 911's driving position was simply better. I drove the 911 on odd days, and the Cayman on even days ... but couldn't detect much difference beyond the obvious. But one fine day I drove both cars "back-to-back" and continued to change back and forth a couple times, and I came up with this conclusion: The 911 drives like a solid tank made of steel ... whereas the Cayman drives like a solid tank made out of thinner-gauge steel ... just slightly thinner. Barely noticeable. And the Cayman felt lighter, and more capable of being thrown into a curve, or back and forth from one lane on the highway to another. I'm sure others have reported similarly. Now I have a 2019 Tesla Performance Model S, and a 2013 911 C4S (with a ducktail) The 2013 911 C4S is raw in performance, yet refined in handling. The Tesla is even faster (i.e., 0-to-60 mph in 3.2 seconds), but fails to inspire trust-in-the-corners like the 911 does. The Tesla's handling is much like a BMW M3 (as I've driven my son's M3), but (again) doesn't inspire as much confidence in the corners as an M3 ... but that lack of trust could be due to my non-familiarity with this sedan having a better weight-distribution, and lower center of gravity. I'm still gettin familiar with the 2019 Tesla and the 2013 911. BTW, all my sports cars have always been close-ratio manuals, except the 5-speed 1990 C4 and the Tesla Performance Model 3, but at least the Tesla's practical. I don't love the 7-spd ... but when I start vacation on the highway, I think I will.

@Mudja Shorts Sorry for my tardy reply: I've not looked at prices in quite a while, but the price seems OK to me, if its closer to $60,000 american dollars. I like this car because it's a 3.4 or 3.5 liter engine, with 2-wheel drive, not 4-wheel drive ... a more basic car, no, I mean more traditional 911. The only significant thing I dont' like is the dopple-clutch automatic transmission, because I'm just one of those die-hard gear heads ... if you gonna have a sports-car, then go all the way. ... but that's me, and my opinion. I dd NOT notice the SportDesign features, and could not read the foreign language on the link you sent me, so my review is probably not very valuable or reliable to you. I looked for a 2009-2011 997 for about 2 years before seeing my 2013 991 (accidentally) while looking through the "Porsche USA" website.

the biggest difference in the interior between the 911 and cayman involves the area directly behind the seats. in the cayman it contains the engine, the storage space above it, and then a trunk. in the 911 it contains expensive upholstered, and practically useless seats and then the engine. no purposely designed storage whatsoever. from a practical POV it's been absurd choice they've inexplicably held on to for decades. they're not the only ones either. smh. BTW, i suspect the 997 got more attention or admiring looks due to one of them being yellow than anything else. just a guess...

There's this thing that happens with the 997, it happened with my 2007 C2S don't know if it happens with other cars or maybe newer models. The keyhole in the ignition gets blocked off and you can't put your key into it to start the car, I've read about some people falling into the wrong hands over this and having to replace the ignition lock unit. Found out from the forums, it worked for me so if this ever happens to you just get an old Toyota key, the old style of keys for some reason will enter that hole and release the thing that blocks off that hole, stick your key back in and start your car.

You can't go wrong with either as long as you don't get a poorly maintained one. Your C4 breakdown cost was a bit misleading. The brake pipe damage wasn't technically a breakdown and most of your costs we're recovery related which you could of mitigated by purchasing european breakdown insurance. Not really an expensive car fault.

I have a 997c2 tiptronic 2007 and I love the car. So many people talk about the tiptronic and it’s always complained about in many ways, I must not be so much of an expert like you guys as I can’t complain one bit about it. Each and every time I drive it the car makes me smile.

@Bit Capone oooh, can you give more details about the new wheel? Which dealer is doing it, which wheel and how much?

I have a 2007 Boxster S with tip. Was a bit of an impulse buy and up to this point all I had owned was vintage 911s and 356s. After 2 months of ownership I am have no regrets and am completely happy with having an automatic. I’m 48 and don’t need to heel-toe every corner at this point in my life. Plus, I’m having the dealer put in a later PDK wheel with paddles so I’ll be very happy in about a week. Tip cars seem to have a discount vs manual. Works for me All that being said, I think my next 911 will be a manual. Needed to get the rear out on the corners. Not sure getting the rear out with a Boxster or Cayman is advisable.

Tiptronic is an excellent gearbox, 99% of people that complain about it have never even tried one.
The Amature Golfer
I’ve got the Cayman, better performing car than the stock 911. Better handling infact unreal handling & it’s quicker. I tested both round the track & I honestly found the cayman a better car. My next Porsche may be the carerra GT4, but that’s a long way off at the minute.

"Lack of buttons" in Cayman. That's a plus point for me. I just want to get in a car and drive it. Not to worry about too much electronic stuff. Cayman better looking and on uk roads, better than 911.

The 911s get more looks due to the colours I think. The cayman colour is subtle, smart and understated. Love the lobster claw wheels on the cayman tho. One problem with my cayman is no cruise control. Deffo tech lacking.

@James Marshall agree for the UK and most of the time but like to take the car on road trips/track days in Europe. Holland,Belgium and France.

There is no doubt that if Porsche would apportion the Cayman as they do the 911, the Cayman would easily outsell the 911. It INHERENTLY handles better....sorry but the mileage is better...and it looks better. There isn't a bad angle on the car...a work of art. It doesn't need 4 wheel steering...it doesn't need all the handling "electronics" which is to keep the back end in check like the 911. After driving both cars I actually had to make the choice you're referring to. My choice of my Cayman S was a no-brainer. It never ever failed to put a smile on my face...a true driver's car.

Right on the money with having to pay a bit. 996 carrera here, Engine died. But I got 5 years' driving out of it - but spent about 2k/year in maintenance. These are NOT cars you buy if you want to save money

Cayman’s are better than base 911’s. More fun, lighter, nimble, and more precise. Buy a base 911 if all you care about is what people think of you.

Am i mistaken thinking the Cayman is about 300 lbs lighter than the 911?.. That is a lot for a sportscar

You won't find one for those prices now. Just in the last 6 months or so the prices have shot way up on both.

cayman's mileage is 126k, does it have bore scoring? I've paid 1.5times more to buy 987.2 base 2.9.
James Marshall
James Marshall Yıl önce
Any Porsche dealer or Specialist dealer could tell you that with a Bore check. Simple. I would use a non main dealer specialist to save money. the 2.7 and 2.9 were not generally known for scoring issues, just the 3.4 Gen 1 model. Is your car emitting blue smoke every time you start it, or when accelerating on the motorway.?? That would be a concern.

987 and 997 are in the same price range?? Weird most of the 997 I see are like 10k more than a cayman 987

James Marshall Yıl önce
I think he said exactly that in the video. Mentioned a £10k Cayman and a £20K 911 !! But those are rock bottom prices and I would not recommend anyone spending less than £15k on a Cayman or £25k even on a base Carrera. You generally get what you pay for !!

I agree with your view on the manual gearbox. Ive had a manual 911 996 Targa which I then exchanged for a 997.2 PDK. Whilst the PDK is something else my brain won't let go of how much I enjoyed the Targa. Great video , keep gong please as this is a great channel.

Hey sir. I am buying 911, just can't decide which one. I don't wanna spend a lot of money but 60-70k is acceptable. Today I am going to look 911 3.5 SportDesign from 2012. Driven just under 39.000km. Can you please, say your opinion on this car and his price. Thanks a lot! Here is link: Porsche 911 Carrera 3.5 SportDesign 350 KS (99.000 KM = 59.000$) www.olx.ba/r/35326343/742181
