When I tell friends and family that homelessness can happen to ANYONE this is what I mean. There are thousands of people in FL who had a safe place to live yesterday and today they don’t. Please be kind to those experiencing homelessness bc in the blink of an eye, it could be you. My heart goes out to all my FL neighbors impacted by Ian. Please be safe and don’t give up hope.

One of the things I've never understood is for folks that have those mid to large boats, we know they have the money to gas them up and travel a hundred miles west to avoid the storm surges. So why do they always leave them in the way knowing that the hurricane is coming several days in advance. I know some folks in their homes can't afford to get out and obviously can't move their homes, but anything that floats can be shipped out of the way. Sometimes I wonder if it's simply rich effers trying to get one over on the insurance companies to get a new boat or get the insurance to cover it instead of trying to sell it for a loss.

Most of those bridges were built two plus generations ago. It's time they get shored up to support storms. Infrastructure can't be ignored. Hoping the most support for those facing losses. Family still faced with no power and flooded streets and yards becoming swamps for snakes and gators. More accidents and health concerns faced over the next couple weeks. Stay strong..

I was told once by a developer that many areas of Florida were never intended to have homes built on them. I'm surprised Insurance companies don't go out of business with Enormous Catastrophe's like this one. Hopefully the majority of the unaccounted for were the ones who evacuated.

Six have failed in Florida this year, and that was before IAN. The ones that have the majority of their policy holders in Florida will be in trouble and the State and Feds will have to step in. Public socialism always has to cover when the private socialism fails. Quite a big mess to clean up, but as a country, we are in this together. RIP those that lost their lives in this storm.

If the surge and the wave action on top of it is 10-15 feet the surge will go in to the area that is about 15 feet above sea level. Most of Florida is very flat and most of Florida is no more than 50 miles from the ocean or gulf. I live in Florida and am 25 miles from the gulf and 80 feet above sea level. It would take an 80+foot storm surge to reach me. There can also be fresh water flooding of rivers and low land from massive rainfall. And don't forget about the winds.
Peter Newman

Every time these huge storms devastate communities, we must ask the question about the overdevelopment of the human species in areas we should not be. Jus’sayin.. Same goes for overdeveloped formerly wilderness areas prone to wildfires ,landslides, and flooding in the West.

It will be impossible to rebuild in some places. Barrier islands can be changed completely by a storm like this, parts washed away permanently. A lot of places should not be built on but developers do it anyway and the buyers are left with whatever Mother Nature lets them have.
AbsentWithoutLeaving 2 aylar önce
The development that happens is governed by local regulation - the community has the power to keep unsupportable development from happening, but it seems like they rarely exercise it - they just look at the tax revenue and jump at it. Visited the Fort Lauderdale area just before the pandemic, and I couldn't believe the highrises going up on every square foot of land along the waterfront - meanwhile, a block in from there, the streets were dug up because the sewer system was inadequate and sewers were backing up. The locals were talking about what a mess the infrastructure was in at that moment, and wondered what would happen when all that new construction was occupied.

Praying for grace to start afresh in a bigger way. Complete restoration!!! My heart really goes to all affected. Stay strong and hopeful.
Vision 2 aylar önce
@Glenn Heston It's okay. But prayer works and works only within God's sovereign will. If God does nothing to help in times of crisis such as this storm surge, I tell you, it will have been worse than that. It's the working of God that refrains the ocean from invading the Earth. And when there's storm surge as this, it shouldn't be seen as an act of God. It could be the result of climate change or something else. So God works and always working to help humanity whom he made in His own image and loves dearly. Glenn, I accept that my comment was child-minded. Thank you.
Glenn Heston
Glenn Heston 2 aylar önce
@Vision Your comment is childminded. If you think prayer works in any way, shape, or form, you're wrong. You're just making excuses for why your god never does anything.
Vision 2 aylar önce
@Glenn Heston I respect your response and comment. My little knowledge is that there are things we cannot control even with prayers, but we can control the aftermath of the crisis through prayer for an overflowing restoration as Florida begins to rebuild. Who knows, perhaps It could have been worse than that if not for prayers of generous people. My comment is only for those that understand the workings of prayer in difficult times as this. Thank you.

They need to do mandatory evacuations with these storms. People need to go somewhere safe till these storms pass. Government needs to implement this and pass it into law. It causes more problems. And much danger for others when they need to rescue them. This is something that needs to be seriously addressed it is not at all respectful of those whom ride these storms out. To expect tax payers and those whom put their lives at risk to come save them. Totally wrong.

I wonder how patients who need dialysis / chemotherapy fare and continue their treatment in hurricane stricken neighborhoods of Florida? What states can they move to and the living expenses that ensues from relocation, how can help be given? Not to mention medications lost for those living in senior assisted centers. It's just disappointing that many of the locals did not listen and evacuated sooner as their Local Government Units did not fall short on sending information, advisories and warnings.
FLAnglo-Saxon 2 aylar önce
@Laura Malizia Thats a very stupid thing to say. You are a terrible person for making a statement like that without any evidence. Did you see any Trump stickers on the people being evacuated? No? Shut up.

OMG how awful of you. The forecast had Ian making landfall 100+ miles north 48 hours before the storm. Many people from the Tampa area, actually went to Fort Myers to ride out the storm. Many people don't have anywhere else to go. Other people are too old to get away. You're just a terrible, horrible person. I hope you get the help that you seriously need.

Some people's situation may not have allowed them to evacuate even if they wanted to.

@FLAnglo-Saxon I don’t think she has a problem per say, I think she’s stating that a lot people are fans of ex president Trump and act without any kind of logic and just do what they please and then cry when they have a problem after they didn’t listen.

I’ll ask again, why did people stay on an island when they knew FOR SURE that they were going to be hit with a category FOUR hurricane? I don’t get it. And these people on Sanibel Captiva are RICH .

“We cannot get through some of life’s challenges alone” ugh Mr. Holt that gets me choked up, because it’s so profoundly true.🥺🌏💔 I loss my adopted mom several months ago now parentless things feel and seem so shattered. Certain people I thought would never haven’t really been there, for me family included in the midst of this devastating loss. 😰😥😰 I have hardly had oxygen let alone emotional bandwidth for anything else. Through my own personal unbearable heartbreaking grief, but my thoughts if anything are certainly with those who’ve loss their homes if not loved ones, or even the animals/pets. From this devastating hurricanes, along with the senseless war crimes and violence so much suffering in this world beyond my own personal deep sadness. 🤍🙏🏾😥

If I had a nickel for every time Hurricane Ian makes landfall in the U.S., I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Ron DeSantis loves getting a share of our California funds, so he can mis-direct Federal humanitarian funds given for COVID-19 relief (he needed much since all of his "freedom" BS left Florida at points with the highest per capita death rate (I lost 3 relatives there from it....and our family dates to 1822 in the state) in the US. He loves taking 12 million of that Federal Covid money for his little white nationalist stunt to fly 50 people to Martha's Vineyard from a state (Texas) halfway across the country from Florida. On the subject of "Federal Socialist Funds" that includes Mitch McConnel, he loves that for his underserved state of Kentucky also.
