i know viewers often tease you for not finishing projects, but i honestly find it really comforting how you go about your creative process. you do what you feel inspired to do, which sometimes means projects get left behind or put on hold for a long time, but especially in an episode like this it really shows that those projects never truly go to waste, because in a way those projects will never really leave you. as someone who often feels burdened by the idea that everything i do has to be productive or lead to good results, it's really comforting to see your creative process when playing this game, to see that even things that don't get finished aren't a failure, but that they can continue to serve me even far into the future. it genuinely has changed the way i view my creative projects for the better and i'm very grateful for that :)

Like Docm77 said in a tweet today, Etho has influenced most of the Hermits early on in all of their careers, so it is probably as surreal to some Hermits as it is to us that Battle Bane will finally see some gameplay. Some hermits watched battle bane before they ever thought they’d be on the same SMP as the man himself, so it’s just insane for them to think that they’ll be playing it.

Other Hermits: Don't like Birch Forests because of the birch trees. Etho: Doesn't like Birch Forests because of the grass color.

I honestly don't get the hate for birch and jungle wood. Birch is a lovely light colour wood and while the logs are a little busy to include into things that aren't supposed to scream "This is a house built from this tree" they aren't exactly a deal breaker either. Jungle wood is a little bit like oak in terms of lightness but has some orange-pinkish undertones which are a lot more interesting to work with than oak. Also acacia for some reason?? Why, it's literally a 2 for 1 resource. Need a nice textured slate grey? Acacia's got your back. Need orange highlights? Acacia to the rescue! And where are my oak haters? That block is so basic it's physically painful.

Calling it now, Etho's last episode of this season will be episode 5 because he started building an arena.
Klffsj 2 aylar önce
@DracoJ4275 Yeah, Etho and Bdubs have a bit of history building arenas together. In Mindcrack Season 4, they built an arena with a capture point system. In one of the Mindcrack modded servers (I don't remember which one exactly, but it had guns that they used) they did pretty much the same thing... just way better because mods enable a lot more creativity and functionality. And, I think there's at least one other I'm forgetting. Anyway, in every case of this, that season would end just after their completion... which was honestly disappointing because the game really only ever got played once.

Klffsj 2 aylar önce
Well, it's a lot easier when the arena's already built and he's just copying it. Also, I find it humorous how your refer to this as a mega game, since this is rather small compared to what the real Battle Bane is supposed to be. You should look it up...
LegoChickenGuy 2 aylar önce
So technically this counts as a new battle bane episode right?
Indianadixon Aylar önce
Klffsj 2 aylar önce
Well, he didn't really make progress on the game-all the gamemode stuff he talked about was for Hermitcraft, not the final solution-but I suppose he did update the design a tad, incorporating new blocks. And, this will ultimately be a step toward the true Battle Bane, so I'll count it!

You could use colored beacon beams as an announcement of the winners. Like, have a pink(xmpl color) team and a green(xmpl color) team, and whoever wins, when they win, a set of beacon beams goes off to signify the winners, with the appropriate color. This way, the feedback is instant, so every one knows right away who won. This ought to be relatively simple to implement, too, since all you have to do is hook it up to the collection system, using the exact same signal that your lights use.
1224ChrisNg 2 aylar önce
Etho's way ahead of you, he was thinking of coloured beacons back in the Mindcrack S4 arena, before coloursd beacons were even added
Vileoss 2 aylar önce
I'm active on a server where I built a large arena that used iron armour, iron swords, bows, arrows, and food. We have a system where there are multiple drop off points. When you get kills, you drop off excess items at these stations and they get allay-sorted back into an automatic gear up system next to spawn. It works really well, and you don't need to re-craft gear OR use Curse of Vanishing. Love the videos Etho, you're the greatest.
Joe The Juggalo
Joe The Juggalo 2 aylar önce
True but the issue was in the game from season 7 Hermits inventory was getting clogged up with gear and couldn't get the items for game points and even if you stopped for a second to try to drop the items you would get killed.

If you want to watch the original videos, their titled "Map Making - The Arena: Episode #" or "Map Making - Battle Bane: Episode #". Personally, I recommend starting with Episode 9, as that's where Battle Bane really starts to take shape, and I believe Etho kinda gives a refresher intro for the series too. Everything before that is older ideas that don't really continue on. Regardless, the more Etho dove into that project, the more interesting and incredible the game design process was: everything from macro game design to power balancing to arena design. It was really a lot more than spawn into the arena and duke it out.

Hey Etho! A cool idea would be to make some “clouds” above certain areas with droppers in that rain down toxic poison potions on players. This could dissuade camping and push players out of areas after an alarm goes off or something to signal the dropping of the “gas”
Kaikaku 2 aylar önce
Etho, depending on how much equipment you give the players at start, one or more of the item-drop stations could also drop some arrows, spectral arrows etc. Suspicious soup would also be nice (and the soup group probably will happilyslurp it), but you'd need to figure out how to store the required amount.
dandymcgee 2 aylar önce
This build is absolutely incredible Etho! Your effort definitely paid off.. and for charity. Extremely kind thing of you to help Scar out with such a high effort project, and following through despite your misestimations.

Ergo i just wanted to say your mini-game designs are always something to be appreciated. You have legitimate skills when it comes to game design which i know you've been honing since even before minecraft lol. The way you look at every fine detail 5 times over and incorporate so many different ideas its genuinely inspiring. I personally have been making mini games in minecraft since as soon as i first played it, so i know well how challenging it can be at times to try to implement ideas into the game the way you want them to work. Yet to me your work on these games is always solid, and most importantly of all, the games are fun lol

I would love to see out of bounds kills done with partial fall damage and magma blocks. This way you can add a small amount of time delay for respawns and give the team who earned the kill a little more benefit. You wouldn't want folks burning in magma blocks for too long, so maybe 7-8 hearts of fall damage.
Old Soldier
Old Soldier 2 aylar önce
@EthosLab Perhaps a "Tag" mode, where players killed by PvP have to join their killer's team, while players dying to PvE return to the team they were on before death? Just a thought.
2horse 2 aylar önce
@ethohalfslab but holding shift would only prolong the respawn delay penalty. The ditch will be too deep to leave.

@K GK I think the better solution is to have people respawn in a small chamber and use tripwires that will close it off for a short amount of time before letting it open again. This way players can still die instantly from fall damage and be punished for dying when they respawn.
Ruben 2 aylar önce
@K GK I think that's even better. Better to make both accidental deaths and kills equally punishing

I never thought id wake up and see battle bane (sorta) in my recommended. Ive watched every episode as it came out and this was super nostalgic for me. I like the idea of capture points. That's a supper cool idea I don't think I've ever seen done in vanilla PVP
Klffsj 2 aylar önce
Etho actually did capture points successfully in vanilla Minecraft for the Mindcrack Season 4. It was one of the season-ending arenas he built with Bdubs. Out of curiosity, did you watch all of the Battle Bane episodes going back to Episode 1 of that series... long before true Battle Bane started taking shape? I've watched everything Battle Bane, but not the very early episodes that are very different.

@lange darm not exactly sure when battle bane started but there is a good chance it is older than some of the viewers!
Klffsj 2 aylar önce
Actually, it did take years, and we would joke about how Etho would post episodes on this project nearly yearly. (He's a few years overdue now.) For Hermitcraft, Etho just copied the design over from the world he created this in. But, when he designed this Etho put a lot of thought and consideration into balanced PVP design, branching paths, lines of sight (and lack thereof), and more to make not only this arena, but a much larger game as a whole. There's a reason why the mere name "Battle Bane" is a fan favorite for those of us who watched that series (and hope that it will return).

Etho, the drops in the arena don't have to be 23 blocks deep, just use the dripstones for extra fall damage
Lina 2 aylar önce
@Boliveto true, but also it would be funny if etho died multiple times to the sheer power of his own traps
Boliveto 2 aylar önce
easier to just cave 23 deep imo, also safer for when building, more time to react and elytra away
Chaster Mief
Chaster Mief 2 aylar önce
even if you can dodge the spikes, you're still stuck in a hole with a bunch of dripstone. It's not game-breaking because you'd still have a way to damage yourself in there. Potentially useful for camping if your team has a big lead towards the end of the match. But I don't think the hermits would ever employ a strat like that. it's more likely that they would just jump on the dripstone until they die so that they can get back in the action.

Your shenanigans, wit, randomness, quirkiness, impressive intellect, fascination in many things, pvp skills, energy, kindness, and so much more make you my favorite youtuber on the entire platform. I just wish there were more like you so I'd have more to watch. Keep up the good work. And although I do miss your videos when you take breaks, I recognize the importance of taking time to deal with important things as well as in cases where you're losing sight of what you want to do in the LP, it can be helpful to take some time to recuperate and gain inspiration. Also, quick question, what is your take on the chat reporting feature? Durzio 2 aylar önce
@EthosLab Using points to buy better weapons from dispensers around the map would encourage movement! Also another element to consider your point balancing. Better weapons should be in places the farthest from the bases Also, Etho, you should change the beacon color to the color of the Winning team! That alongside the bells will be a great way to announce to had the most points when the bells rung!
Sboat 2 aylar önce
@EthosLab You could also use the colored banners (or beacons) as 'sign posts' to give people an idea of where they are and are going, particularly in the mines/underground areas. I feel like it might get easy to go turned around in there or not have a good idea of where exactly you're going to end up, at least for new players. I just think that communicating the bases and routes to the players will smooth out the experience for the teams.
Another Duck
Another Duck 2 aylar önce
Banners can also be made to make them more easily distinguishable with different symbols. I'm not sure if any of the Hermits are colour blind, but a lot of viewers probably are. Or use colours not often affected by colour blindness, such as something like black, white, blue, and orange/yellow.
Kevin J.
Kevin J. 2 aylar önce
Yes! What a great idea, bringing new life form an under-utilized project! I love it! 🪜🪜🪜 SCORE COUNTER: How about every player carries around a totem of some kind (just not the undying kind 😉). When a player dies, the opposition would need to take this item and collect them in their base or spawn room (kinda-like capture the flag except that everyone always has one). This would make erratic deaths (ie: with knockback) undesired because the token may be lost or collected by others ~ encouraging more 1-on-1 fair-fights. Every team should have their own unique totem item (renamed item perhaps) and no-teams just means everyone gets treated as a team of one players. EDIT: I should add that collecting a totem from your own team would not give points but it prevents the opposing team from adding it to their score.

It might be good to use Leather Armour and Gold Swords because: 1) The teams can be distinguished by the die color 2) Armour value is low and the damage is high so the time to kill is low (which makes base defense easier and surprise attacks better) 3) Easily obtained (cow farm and zombie pigman farm)

It might be fun to leave the weapons, armor, potions etc. as a finite and mixed resource in a starting chest, forcing them to stratagize with their teammates over their roles. Then as the game progresses they can be forced to use things like hoes and flint and steel as weapons, because all of their swords and bows are gone.

When you said you've had the game in the works for a long time, I was like "there's no way it's Battle Bane," but then you built Battle Bane
Lovely to see BattleBane again. Even if it's in a somewhat watered-down form. Have you considered a nether-based PVP game, though? With respawn anchors, you can limit the number of times that players can respawn, or provide glowstone as powerups for players to choose who's most likely to need the extra livest. Or this can be done with redstone, admittedly. I kinda wish you'd show more B-roll as actual episodes. I mean, this is episode 4 and you have a beacon and automated tree farm already. We didn't even get to see either! Not to say padding it out exactly, but in your earlier episodes you used to show more and I miss that.

You could add a "running out of time" feel by using short bell triggers that tells the players the time is running out for example, 2 mins before the end ring the bells twice for 2 seconds, then once for 2 seconds a minute before the end. This lets players know to try and get their fights done and get the heads to the collection points.

To encourage movement, dropping random enchantments, different weapons, or potions around the map could be an alternative to actual points. That would keep the focus of the game on PvP instead of a collection game. But that just depends on the drop rate! So you could just keep the extra points rare instead. Or do both. There's so much cool stuff you could do with this! Love the idea, the commitment, and the throwback.

@particle man ender pearls are kinda impossible since you're already limiting the players in a small area. If someone throws an ender pearl outside of the 5 block gap he dug out, then they'd essentially break the game. For the og battle bane, ender pearls would be a pretty awesome idea!

The arena feels so nostalgic, the build style is so 2011-2013, i love it. Giving players different classes would make how they approach combat differently. Aside from the typical sword fighter with iron armour, archer with limited arrows and leather; maybe someone could have harming potions + rod/hoe. There could also be a bow vs bow mode for the de facto casual FPS experience

I saw that you guys have a custom music disc plugin on the server in other hermits videos. Also you could make custom announcements like: "Team Red/Blue won" or "30seks remainin" ! :)

Honestly, I prefer the Vanilla feel of things. The sound effects are nice for quirky things in the server, but natural sounds like bells and jukeboxes as time warnings sound much more familiar, and thus nicer to me for a game like this.

It must be nice to see your arena 'in release' :) hope, you'll have lots of fun playing around and developing it further! When the building was done, I instantly though of 'hunger games', with a bunch of chests hidden around the map, that can contain better(or worse?) gear, weapon, food and potions. Maybe, that could be helpful

Has it been 10 years since the start of Battlebane?! Love seeing it again and so happy that the mini game area is starting, relatively, early in the season. Seems like everything a mini game area gets set up, the server resets.

Hey Etho! Love the episode. You should consider collecting all the player heads from people playing and sell them at a rival shop to Bdub’s head shop. Might be fun. Thanks for the video and hard work!

Cursed shields as “power up” items for the losing team to have some comeback mechanic. Always fun to have a way for the losing team to still have a shot

That was a great episode, thank you Etho :) Seeing Battle Bane get a "test run" is going to be so awesome :D

That arena looks epic so far, can't wait to see those minigames take place
Pandaeye 2 aylar önce
Hey Etho, have you considered installng "power ups" in central areas of the arena? Like maybe a pressure plate that will throw a speed potion or something every so often, or something like that to encourage more people to go through the riskier parts of the arena, and give them a reward for trying to engage that way, rather than going through the "safer" parts of the arena

Hi Etho, always pleasant to see a new upload from you. For the player spawn rooms you could use water elevators or a drop onto slime from a really high place so the bed rooms aren't in level with the arena. Thank you for the video.

hey etho, thank you so much for uploading today. i honestly was probably having the worst day Ive ever had in a long time today, and seeing the notification that you had uploaded a video really helped easing the pain. thank you so much for all you do. you are by far my favorite youtuber ever.

Hey Etho, love days when your episodes come out! With the bridge pitfall, what about putting dripstone at the bottom for the hermits to fall on? I think that will provide a cool aesthetic and might help with fall time/dead time?

Hei Etho nice to see you giving your old project a fresh start. I got an idea to spice things up abit. Add secret to the map. Like shooting a target block dispense a point or hidden buttons or lever. It can also function as traps so player can decide to take a chance to either get trapped or get a reward.

Suggestions: 1) Firework shoots off from the point collector when a point is scored. (bonus if colour matched!) 2) Some sort of environment event when a bonus point spawns. Think a cart is sent on a track, a waterfall is released, a light changes, etc. Something that visually tells you it spawned visible from outside the area. Lots of room for theming. 3) Spawn doors for spawn rooms open and close, so you can have adjustable spawn timer. Gives you options: built-in one-life mode (never open after start), instant respawn (always open after start), and an adjustable spawn delay. Last one especially gives choices for balancing. Teams may be dissuaded from killing in point mode since it sends people back to their base where they can protect the point collector - but if there is a spawn delay, killing the team now GIVES you time to steal their points.

Wow, surprise Battle Bane! Good ol' Etho, allways having something unexpected for us xD I really like the concept though, the point-system and all. A few thoughts of mine: - Gear: Maybe you don't need to bother with the curse-of-vanishing stuff, maybe all you need is a cupple of pork-chops, a wooden sword and maybe leather boots with featherfall? With this a dead player would only put 3 slots into your inventory (2 equipment, 1 head) instead of 6. Then again, getting 1 librarian and farm a cupple curse books isn't much harder either, iron beeing basically free... - You don't have to dig the trenches 23 blocks deep, there is dripstone and lava (since you plan on using curse of vanishing anyway). Or you could have some fun with ravagers or wardens or well kitted skeletons :3 - If you (or others) get the feeling that there is too much chaos and luck in the game, you could reduce the points on Hermits dropping their own heads into their base. This way, NOT dieing is rewarded more (ofc, you don't want to overtune this and encourage passive paly).

Etho, I would love to see this game in action!! For making players more spread out on the map, maybe there can be 1-2 pressure plates in different locations and on standing on those, a valuable item having more points can appear in a different location.

I'm not even joking, When I realized you were building Battle Bane I actually cried, Battle Bane has been one of my favorite semi-annual unfinished projects, and to finally see it was just amazing.

I would suggest stalactites in the cave around the map (increased damage when players fall on it)

Etho, i love the iterations you've been making on Battle Bane and have a suggestion (which would add more work lol), but what about also developing a loadout/ class system for players to choose before the game starts like tank, healer, DPS, etc? could be fun if balanced properly, but i can also see how that might create too many moving parts to work well without adding a ton of development time and play-testing. I think what you already have is good enough on its own either way to enjoy from both a viewer perspective and from a player perspective. I know the final result once you get the hermits together for a PVP session will be an exciting event to look forward to. Thanks for the hard work you put into making good videos! Been watching for over a decade now

Hm, I got thinking of a gamemode that I think can work pretty well for this. What about some sort of king of the hill game or something. It would have a few different points and maybe beacon beams would indicate which one is active (as well as a sound queue whenever the capture point changes) and I guess have a pressure plate for each team on each capture point, as long as just one of those is active the corresponding team gets points. And the point can either change based on time and it all adds up to a total score for the team OR whenever one team fully captures a point, they score 1 point and then the capture point changes.

Bro, seeing that arena made me feel like I was back in 2012 again playing Survival Games on some MC server and its just filled me with this overwhelming sense of comfort. I've gone through a billion twists and turns in my life and through it all I have watched your videos. I love that you've evolved without ever truly losing sight of yourself. You're the only minecraft player left that doesn't do CONSTANT editing, musical timelapses and zoom in shots of themselves every two seconds. Don't get me wrong, I love the youtubers that do all those things, but Etho's style just always feels like home and brings me back to the simple days when I was just a kid at my computer gaming with my friends and are biggest concern was getting the doors exactly in the middle of the build lol

Old school PvP with no shields and minimal unenchanted armour (save for Curse of Vanishing) is going to make this a really fun game to watch and replayable too. I can’t wait for the charity stream!

it's gonna pair nicely with the old-school block pallet. this whole map looks like something straight out of beta 1.8, it just has a couple flourishes like the dyed glass and blackstone on the volcanos to make it pop.

I wonder what the cleaning lady would think about the ender chest storage system. It's like Etho is harnessing the power of a shulker monster for his storage purposes like some eldritch machine!
Klffsj 2 aylar önce
Actually, it stays really organized. If you notice in his videos, sometimes, when he needs something, he sets down an ender chest, pulls out the right shulker from the right spot, then finds the right item in the right spot in the shulker. Everything has its place, and Etho knows exactly where it is. As for the chest monster we see, it's actually a very organized automatic refilling station for the shulkers that go in the ender chest. Etho was just showing the top view where he fills the refilling station, rather than the bottom view where he would typically be.
