If the bowl got a good bake and cure, you can wet sand it to remove the smear from the knife. It may reveal better layers under the microscope.

Since they're using polymer clay, they're not making layers but an emulsion. But if they were to slice it with a "tissue blade" - a long scalpel-thin razor blade made for slicing polymer clay - they would be able to see, with the magnification, the layers of pigment particles lining up within the clear polycyanoacrylate!

The million layer bowl actually looks great! It’s not a psychedelic rainbow but it looks more like “clay” with cool colorful inclusions! Like a piece of wood with colorful resin in the cracks! I think if you intentionally go for a brown bowl with colorful secret layers in it, it would look extra fancy and awesome!

The really brown one makes me think of some types of Boulder opal! You guys can give sanding it up to a high grit and buffing it may make it more appealing. I like making faux gemstones with polymer clay a lot so I tend to sand a buff my creations a lot.

I suspect the reason for it being "less linear" as Katelyn states is because the layers were in so many different sizes before being squished. Perhaps stacking, then cutting INSIDE the edges ( like using a cookie cutter in dough) would have made a big difference. Possibly even keeping the colors from merging so soon!? I love watching the cool things y'all do!!
@EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 4 yıl önce
Haha yeah definitely! If we ever do something like this we have a few changes in mind. Thanks!
@EKimatH
@EKimatH 13 gün önce
Ideally you would have squish each individual layer to thickness and shape independently and then stack the even layers and squish them together. That would minimise the warping at the edges, and significantly reduce the blending situation that’s caused by the knife

This makes so much more sense to me now when people talk about swords folded over a million times by hand. Now you need to take what's left and make the strongest clay Katana the world has ever known! Muramasa would be... well, mildly amused, I guess.
@EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 4 yıl önce
Right? It seems like such a ridiculous impossible number til you realize it's just 8 rounds of folding/squishing
@ricebeansrockroll882
I mean, im still impressed, squishing it togheter 8 times by hand (And hammer), making shure the temperature stays even enough for the sword to not be brittle etc. Yeah Im still impressed

Actually that million layer one would look pretty awesome if most of the layers were very similar, with one exceptional standout, for example an extremely pastel blend plus like bright green. Or very dark bluey colours with one bright colour. Because if it weren't brown+green it actually made a pretty cool pattern.
@unknowndummy9387

I think to prevent the browning you could’ve pressed the quarter pieces individually before stacking them up A lot of the color mixing seems to happen when those quarter pieces asymmetrically get squeezed into each other

The browning is basically the exact reason why they layered and folded the steel back then: Mixing it into uniform material with the same carbon content everywhere. They didn't have the same tools and measuring devices to make steel with the perfect carbon content, so they just took high and low carbon steel and mixed it pretty good to get steel that holds an edge well without beeing too brittle.

BEHOLD, the GIGA-BOWL! Side note, it would be interesting to see how different it would look cutting and arranging the patterns between squooshes, similar to how Alec plans his, to have an intended effect.

That would be really cool! I think it we limited it to two colors the patterns would show up a lot more

I’m so excited to try this out but so very disappointed you can’t do this with resin!! Lol Damascus resin would be the coolest thing in the entire world! 😻🙀
@ricebeansrockroll882
How would you fold resin?

I know I WISH! We do wanna do something with a ton of resin layers sometime, even though we can't do the folding techniques

Did you always stack them in the same orientation? Would be cool to see it with the clay pieces in different orientations.

Now go one step further: stack it until you are at 256 and then turn a bowl out of it on a lathe. :) The layers get bigger again because the are cut at an angle, it would be a level upmost certainly. You might have to bake it first though.
