If you want the tube to be even brighter, install something reflective in the cap at the end. This causes the light to bounce back and forth instead of escaping out of the end. I use this method to make my light tubes for light painting. Also, you can order holographic film that goes inside the tube instead of a milky white. This will give you amazing colors without needing the gel near the light source. I hope this helps

For a colored light beam three solutions come to mind: a) placing the gel higher up and just using something to black out the band of white light kaitlyn was worried about, b) using a glass colored filter instead of a gel, c) adding a sheet of gel with the diffusing sheet or finding a colored diffusing sheet

If you guys ever think of exploring the mega light saber with color again, those colored gels that you tried in the holder you can actually get in a huge roll, you'd be able to replace your diffusion gel with and colored gel and that might work.

That's cool as hell. One minor change you could make is adding something reflective to the very end lid cap. That way some of the light is reflected back towards the source a bit. I think you'd get a more even glow across the whole tube. Although I love the way it looks on camera at a distance like it is.

This is what people who build their own lightsabers do. Normally when making or buying the little end cap, there's a little mirror in it, often with a small hole drilled in it so the cap will still be lit.

I majored in film in college so it was really interesting seeing you guys experiment with gels and diffusion! Did you do any research into scrims for lighting? It looked like you had the right idea with how you prepped the gels with a frame, but whenever we used lighting where we had to set up barndoors with gel diffusion we had some special disks that would slot right in front of the bulb. If you ever wanted to upgrade the saber for color it might be worth looking into making some light control accessories that have a dark shaft where you can insert scrim disks and not have the white light peek through. Alternatively, you could probably make some protection for the gels with some of the same heat-resistent acrylics. Just a thought! You made a really cool saber either way and I can't wait to see what you make next!

Hellooo! I do theatre lighting for a living. I'd recommend trying to get hold of rolls of the colour filters instead of little square sheets (they're known as lighting gels), and putting it inside the tube the same way as the diffusion. So lighting gel, then the diffusion (with the diffusion on the outside). Did this for a similar style project when the lights kept burning through the gels and it worked alright. I'd try green as it's much brighter. Try Lee Filters or Rosco. They also make High Temp stuff but I reckon that'd still melt that close to the light source.

Have you thought about using a reflective funnel leading to colored glass instead of the color film? I say the funnel because it'll eliminate the white space in between the film and flashlight and colored glass because it's more resistant to the high temperatures. Hopefully they see this! Interested to find out!

I think you could have used the light vein effect to taper the light down to the diameter of a normal light saber. You'd need to have an initial wide section to encompass the light at the base and leave enough space for heat dissipation before narrowing the tube, but it seems totally doable and I'd bet that the intensity of that light focused into such a narrow veine would be awesome!

You can get that diffusion film in other colors. That might be a good solution for spreading the heat across a much larger amount of film so it isn't as likely to melt as fast

Hey Evan and Katelyn! I wonder if you can add color to this lightsaber by dyeing plastic in some way. Synthetic dyes will work on plastic! I use dyes to color plastic and can recommend mixing pro chemical and dye with denatured alcohol to maybe make your own color filter that’s got a little more heft to it, maybe even color the whole tube.
