Along with having Dolly Pardon, Henry Winkler, and Stacy Weitzerman as guests for her 1977 Special, Barbara Walters also sits down with Lucy and Gary Morton. IMO:Barbara Walters asks the questions Lucy kinda steered away from up until this point of her career on TV (post-I Love Lucy) Some say Lucy was uncomfortable with discussing her past life with her current husband, as she wanted to respect the present joys they had in their successful marriage, and giving it its own identity-It's definately interesting to see Lucy a little stern with Barbara about her first marriage and telsl the TRUTH of how it was, and why it didnt work. Barbara is wonderful and friendly but asks those GOOD questions you've always wanted to know :) Id love to see an unedited version come out one day, as this is the only known full footage besides that shown on the original air date. At least that I know of. Thanks for watching! :) and come visit us at our fun place - Facebook.com/thelucyartblog

Lucille Ball is one of the classiest women ever to grace the screen and the Earth. It puzzles me that some folks comment here and suggest she was bitter, when she remained friends with Desi for the children and was only being honest about what transpired between them as a married couple. Any married woman, particularly with children, should be upset when her husband is unfaithful. I think she put on a brave face for the public and her children. She obviously cared very much about her family and her fans. She was extremely talented, funny, beautiful and witty...but most importantly...compassionate and loving. Thanks for the memories Lucy. You were and always will be one of a kind. One of God's finest. An absolute treasure :-)

people often mistake being stoic, and enlightened by experience, and pragmatic, and strong for being bitter or cold-if it’s in a woman... Men are allowed, but not the ladies so much. But of course, this mischaracterization is usually the mark of those who haven’t any similar experiences to the person they’re judging, have zero frame of reference for the life they’ve lived, but what they do know is this person is definitely doing it wrong.

Gary was the strong and dependable man that Lucy needed. Their marriage was very happy, so Lucy had a happy ending. I think she always loved Desi, he was her great passion. But Gary gave her the stability she always craved.

@DW1970 Lucy said in an interview that Desi was self-destructive and everything he built in life had to be destroyed.

@Beth Virginia Phillips I understand where you are coming from. Having said that, the divorce probably needed to happen. Desi cheated on her so often that you just get to a point there is no trust. Even her daughter said "well he was Cuban" which I think was a horrible excuse. Had nothing to do with him being Cuban he just couldn't stay faithful to save his life.

Sometimes these reporters think it’s all about them and they forget it ‘s about their guest. I spent 30 years in broadcasting and interviewed many, people tune in to hear the “Guest” not the egomaniac reporter..reporters do much the same today, talking and interrupting the guest. They all do it..”Hey, Look at me!” Horrible..

@Jake Vendrotti you're right. I do think she still had feelings for Desi but understood that she would never have the marriage she wanted with him. Gary, poor guy, had to play second fiddle as Mr. Ball.
Jake Vendrotti
Jake Vendrotti 7 aylar önce
Well...true. But the way Lucy cuts Gary off to talk about Desi...She doesn't appear to respect him as much as she respected Desi. Not glad or upset or anything other than an observation. She seems never to have really gotten truly over the betrayal of the father of her children, though it's very nice that she found contentment (not necessarily passion, inspiration) with her second husband. Hope I'm wrong and she was even happier in retirement. It seems though, that she would have been happiest had Desi kept himself together and stayed with her to the end.

Hopefully they both “wore the pants” but I do like that she was looking out for herself in her new relationship ❤️ She wanted him to keep his sense of self. I think it was kind of a mistake to have her interviewed with him next to her throughout... because she of course had to talk more! The interview is about her!

I love how even though she was devastated about Desi's shortcomings and unfaithfulness she was still honest and gave him the credit he deserved for his accomplishments. It's hard work coparenting and seeing through your own bitterness to accept the ex and treat them fairly. Pain and disappointment has a way of clouding ones judgement. It takes a strong person to say my heart is broke but that's just how it is sometimes. We're all human and not a one of us is perfect.

Years ago I found a copy of Desi Arnaz's book in a thrift store that was signed and bought it for that reason. It was fascinating and full of behind the scenes stuff and I was surprised to see that he took full responsibility for his cheating and destroying their marriage. He even talks about hiring Vivian Vance on the spot after seeing her in a play and Lucy being furious because she thought he hired some bombshell that he could fool around with but was thrilled when she met Viv and they became best of friends. He also was told not to hire William Frawley because he was an alcoholic but he wanted him anyway and warned him that if he ever even suspected him of drinking while on set he would fire him immediately but that Frawley never did in all those years.

What Lucy was trying to say about Desi is that he was a self-destructive man and he pulled her down into the wreckage. For years after Lucy and Desi split, you could see the heartache and disappointment in her eyes, even when she tried to hide it. That kind of marriage changes you.
jeanthree 5 yıl önce
Desi did apologize to Lucy for all the pain that he did cause her. Yes it is understandable Lucy speaks of resentment. However, Lucy did forgive ,him and they maintained a strong friendship it was not for their kids it was for them as well. Lucy was truly an amazing woman.

@lemurian chick I agree...she meant & said he agreed that the “loser” part meant that he had to lose everything he had! Probably deep down he had subconscious programming that told him he didn’t deserve what he had & there it all went. As you’ve said...self-defeating attitude. I call it self-sabotage programming. @LillyKat Jones 1.) She wasn't implying that Desi did not love Lucy. 2.) Lucy's first true love was Desi but Desi killed her love. He cheated on her constantly & drank & gambled. No, by the time Lucy married Gary, she was no longer in love with Desi. She may have cared about him but love. No. 3.) Desi loved Lucy until the end. He blew their marriage and business relationship. She bought him out of his share of Desilu. But Desi truly loved Lucy until the end. By the time of this interview,, Lucy obviously loves Gary.

@Chase Jackson He was a womanizer. they very nearly divorced early on in their marriage. Lucy hoped the TV series with them working together instead of being separated for weeks at a time that Desi would be faithful as HE blamed it on them not being together, but he still cheated. Bottom line he made excuses for cheating and tired to blame her, but he was going to do it no matter what. He did not want to be monogamous. He loved her but still wanted other women.

@Larry Medina Ball had deep-seated insecurities...I happened across a movie with a 24yo Desi (Father takes a wife)...helped put much in perspective....Desi was a VERY attractive, charismatic, confident, Latin with raging hormones....Ball and Desi married one year before, Arnaz/Ball married when Desi was a 23yo latin with raging hormones.. It did not at all help that when they were out n about Ball observed the mny women that gravitated twd Desi.....Any time Desi was out of her sight for more than 20mins, her mind wld run rampant thinking about what he was doing n with whom.

Both Lucy and Lucille Ball will NEVER be forgotten. I say Lucy and Lucille Ball because they were two totally different people, even though they were the same person. Lucy was what you saw onscreen and Lucille Ball was whom you knew in person or in private. She had many many friends, was and still is loved by millions and millions of people and at least in my life time, will always be remembered. Sure she had her faults, we all do, we're all human. People say she could be very mean but they forget she was also very generous and encouraged people who she knew had talent and gave them great compliments, that's just how a lot of people are. But you could see after she left Desi that she was not the same person, even when she was being Lucy, part of her was gone, some of that spark was gone. She always looked and sounded a bit unhappy, like part of her was missing and Desi was the part of her that was missing, even though they remained friends and still loved each other very deeply, she never got over him and he never got over her. If Desi hadn't have been a drinker and a cheater, they would have stayed together. But no matter what type of person she was in private, which is none of our business, I still love and admire her.

Wow, its barely a minute into the interview and Lucy gives a big sigh as she is talking about Desi. I can almost feel her hurt and pain as she reflects back on Desi and the failure of the marriage . +William Joseph Smith III We lost our first, a little girl and if you're the father you have no time to grieve. The poor Mom is so distraught that she must be your #1 concern a good while after. Its super tough for the Mom because her body and emotions are all set for a child...but no baby. They cry for days on end and all the Dad can do is hug and just "be there". The initial hurt does lessen in time but the Mom always misses her baby; even if they have another child soon after. Our second child was born healthy just 13 months after the loss of the first, and Thank God for it!

@Richard Cranium - The doctors said with the extent of my half-sister's damage, it was a miracle she was not also blind and deaf as well. In my sister's case, she was also premature and the nurse told my mother she was not in labor and refused to call the doctor until the baby was born. The doctor panicked when he got there and clearly overdosed her on oxygen. Note that my mother had already had two babies, one of which was also premature so she may have had some idea that she was in labor and baby was on its way. Damn power-hungry nurse! The previous premature baby died a few hours after birth - my "father" (using the word very loosely) refused to take my mother to the hospital when she told him she was in labor and insisted it was indigestion because the baby was not due yet and forced her to take all sorts of garbage. After several hours, he got scared and went to get his mother who told him to take her immediately to the hospital. No telephones so my mother could do nothing for herself or her baby. I am sorry about your aunts - those things should never have happened. If they are still alive, please give them my condolences.

My mother worked for Lucille Ball in the 1960s-70s and eventually met and knew the real story behind all the people discussed in this interview along with many of the most famous celebrities that Lucy was friends with, but I gotta say that everyone here is passing blame for some things that they don't know anything about! We as the public and fans can only comment on how we feel about their work. Not their personal lives, we weren't there, we don't know the specifics that led to certain feelings and actions in their lives. Another thing that I can say is that, having worked for some big names in Hollywood is that I was always surprised in how different these people were from what the public thought of them. Or, what the media sold to the public.

Great seeing this interview again after so many years. And great to have seen Lucy in a happy and long lasting marriage to Gary Morton after her time with Desi. For me the most poignant moment was at the very end when Barbara mentioned how Lucy had had to come to terms with her real life being in such contrast to her life on screen, and Lucy said that she used those moments to help her through the bad times, because it was always happy on her show; in a world where they pretended.

As Barbara said, "she wears well." What an absolute treasure! When my son was three years old, we were watching an I Love Lucy re- run on cable. She and her best friend Vivian were caught up in one of their wacky schemes and my little boy started to laugh hysterically, then we were both laughing. Laughter, that was her gift to us all. I think that we forget that she was only human, with flaws like the rest of us, but giving the world joy and laughter is her legacy, and what a wonderful legacy it is. So, wherever your spirit dwells Lucille, thank you!

I think she stayed bc she was so in love with him she could not let him go. She filed for divorce once before & word is he sweet talked her begged forgiveness & took her to bed the night b4 she was due in court. She had that crazy passionate love for desi.

@I said what I said Back in those days women didn't run to the divorce court for unacceptable behavior or call the cops on their husbands when they got violent ...they accepted a lot because of the stigma of getting a divorce...often times they were in denial...But Lucy must have really loved him that's all I gotta say...she may also be one of those ppl who feared change...I couldn't take a fraction of what my mother was put through by my dad...its just a generational thing I guess.

I said what I said No,no no. I was around in those days. Times were so different, not at all like today. One did not get divorced even in a abusive marriage. Lucy was such a consummate professional. Lucy made her own way from the ground up, cycling from stage to stage offering to take any part available. She learned from fabulous people like Buster Keaton. Insecure? Most actors are, but Lucy gave 100% always. It took television to showcase her great talents.
Marjorie Margel

ohwell94 No. Lucy was not difficult. She was demanding. Insecure, because as the head of Desi Lu after the divorce, she was totally in charge of Every Production on That Lot including a new series back then, Star Trek!
I said what I said

That's nothing to admire. She clearly had very little self-worth to stay with a serial cheater for 19 years. It's not like he had a couple of affairs here and there, he was having orgies with hookers and would flirt with every attractive woman in sight, sometimes right in front of her. This went on for the entire marriage.

I Love Lucy. I’ve read books and watched the interviews and all the shows. I think Desi was her passion and Gary was her strength and stability. She was so strong. Tough. Admirable for the times. I wasn’t born until 1969 but the reruns were still going strong. I was 20 when she died. Glad to have been alive during those latter years of the life of Lucille Ball. My junior high counsellor told me that Lucy was her ex husbands godmother. True story! ❤️

That is one of the most awesome videos I have ever seen. I have remained great friends w/my ex-husband. We share 4 wonderful children and 4 grandchildren (sure to grow). Why should we be bitter w/each other. Life is much better for all if you can let the bitterness go and enjoy life. "I Love Lucy" is still one of my favorite shows. I have seen them all at least 10 times each. Never get tired of them or not laugh. ...... "vegameatavitamin" ....lol

I have always loved Lucy from a very early age in my life and followed her career and family. What amazed me about Lucy was her ability to be on tv year after year and make others laugh when she obviously had some very real heartaches of her own. Lucy's ability to love others is one of the biggest reasons people loved her in return. Even after she divorced Desi, they still remained very close. Desi always sent her flowers on her birthday and anniversary, even when they were divorced and had married other people. You don't spend 20 years of your life with someone without having a very special place for them in your heart. When I was listening to Lucy talk about leaving tv, it makes complete sense that she left when she did. Sitcoms had become political and continue to do so today. I think she would be horrified over the things today's sitcoms consider funny.
