It’s finally here! Thanks to everyone for all the support over the past few months, the response to everything is still mind-boggling. While this build isn’t done, This is the big milestone that I’m pushing for. I’ll continue to tinker with it in the future and I’m here for ongoing development, but please watch the ending of this video for more details.
Thank you so much!
Cad files and code will be here:
Cad: www.thingiverse.com/thing:483... *NOTE: This is a work in progress. There were almost 600 files across 5 design changes and I *think I verified them correctly. Let me know if there's any issues. Proceed with caution.
Code: TBD- I have some issues that I'll go over in a later date.

You could program the Freevalve system to act as a Jake Brake (compression release brake) if you wanted to. Good way to help a car slow down a lot faster, and it shouldn't consume any extra fuel or add extra weight/stress to the engine.
Paul T
Paul T 4 aylar önce
THERE it is, the true demand for application. Diesel folks would be lined right up. Especially with the capability of current gen trucks....braking will never not be an issue. Having a true engine compresson-loss brake on any heavy-load vehicle would be a leap forward in safety and peace of mind.

Theres a reason that jake brakes are only put on semis and not everyday trucks. The maintenance and upkeep would be absolutely ridiculous.

The whole free-valve tech is an amazing idea with huge benefits to engine management n control to get better performance in almost every aspect of efficiency n power but I didn't imagine someone could just produce such a system in his home garage, fit it to a rather elderly Miata and actually get it to work, that's just wonderful in so many ways. You read or hear stories about early engineers who came up with amazing innovations in all kinds of fields that they developed themselves, it's great to know such folks are still out there doing it, really pleased about that n wish you all the best. The innovations created n perfected by Koenigsegg and his team and put into his cars are amazing, just like all his cars.

You could definitely get better reserve air pressure by using the a/c compressor (assuming it's still there) with a pressure switch to work in a cyclic way and keep your reserve tank topped up. It's even cheaper than a harbor freight 12v job :)

@D4RKHOUND Or any car, motorcycle, etc. The Koenigsegg 2.0-liter 3 cylinders and gets 600HP. The weight reduction would get you extra MPG without having to loose power. It makes pickups trucks with big V8's look dumb. If all you need is a small 3 or 4 cylinder 2.0 liter and you have all the horses you need. Why hasn't Toyota or any other company started implementing this? Seems short sighted.

Robert Nugent
Robert Nugent 2 yıl önce
@NATEEL It's really not money that's the problem, it's IP law and the regulatory apparatus. We're sold this idea of IP laws and regulations protecting the little guy, but they end up doing the opposite and protecting established players from competition by new entries into the market. This is why he released it for free I would imagine. The tech would never see the light of day otherwise, and he would never be able to make any money off of it. Auto industry would bury him if he did. A good guy to listen to talk about this is Joerg Sprave on the slingshot channel. He's actually a patent attorney and he was like, "no way am I going to benefit from patenting this technology (about his Instant Legolas repeating bow design), so I just release it as prior art into the public domain so that people can enjoy it." Paraphrasing there of course.

Thanks and keep up the amazing work!

That was pretty phenomenal. I looked into solenoid operation about 14~15 years ago but at that time there wasn't a pneumatic spring (at least not outside Formula One race cars) and solenoids needed high amps to operate plus they couldn't operate at high crankshaft rpm. I do remember the truck ('big rig) that won it's class at Pikes Peak had 'no camshafts' with solenoid operation. I also really like your idea of putting it out there so others can 'play' and develop it further. (I forget if it was 2014 or 15?) The potential for computer controlled valve operation to get more power and/or much better fuel mileage is very interesting
Turo
Turo 2 yıl önce
Would be really interesting to test / develop this further with smaller engines such as 125 four stroke race bike. In small displacement engines camshaft is usually the most restricting part since there is so little power to play with. Either you have good torque down low or have the engine screaming at over 9k rpm but no power below that. Also these engines are so simple compared to a car engine it would be easy to rule out some variables. I noticed you have not yet posted links for the cad files or the code but I will be patiently waiting.

@EatPezzzz Yes, but he would be cutting out a lot of people in 3rd world countries that would like to try and work/develop this further but have no funds. Basically what he is doing is making the whole thing open source, meaning anyone can contribute and anyone can use it. Only bad thing is someone could just start making money off of his hard work and there would be hardly anything he can do.

I'm insanely impressed with this build. I haven't followed it from beginning to end but I've checked up from time to time. I'm crazy impressed with this. Good job man; that look on your face when you first got it to fire, that's a feeling to live for. I can't say I understand the purpose of this technology in a car, but it's super cool. I see this two ways; way 1: super cool advancement for future advancement of internal combustion and efficiency. Way 2: a considerable more amount of failure points. Keep working on this stuff, EVs are not the future, what you're doing here probably will end up being closer to the future than you even realize here. Consider yourself followed. -Ya Boy, Delta (maybe this will make it into my turbo e36 build eventually)

I love how you are making the considerable groundwork you have done available for free, it could work as a platform for other engineers to work with this technology and not have to reinvent the wheel before they can even begin to implement their idea. Purchasing a Miata and getting the parts engineered is actually a pretty low barrier of entry to end up with a rolling development platform for freevalve.

Hey Wesley, Congrats again for all the hard work and sharing it to the world. this is open source spirit taken to the next level. I was wondering how you handled the risk of valves crashing during the test phasee then realized it's a non intererence engine.. It got me thinking wether it would possible to let the engine coast with valves (partially?) opened, no fuel, no spark ? any idea how that would compare to classic cylinder deactivation with valves closed ? it's probably a dumb idea but it might have some applications like cooling down the engine, coasting... I think it's amazing how a simple concept like free valves offers a clean slate and opens up so many possibilities.

its more easy when all things are invented and u transform the concept to your car , the hard thing is make it from 0 from no concepts .. imagine one freevalve on magnets? how u can do it , that is the hard part
Colton Cook

@Tibiano Uru if it’s so easy, why don’t you do this to one of your cars then?
Luke Tape

@Colton Cook Because it's easier to leave poorly written stupidity in the comment section. Saying "how u can do it , that is the hard part" like that's what this man did, he figured out how to make it work on something new and completely different from a Koenigsegg.

@Luke Tape you know the compay free valve is several years old right? and from yer 1 they had the prototype working AND there is a diagram of freevalve online and free valve is as simple as a set of electric valves timed by a computer , he only designed a valve head

It would be cool to see cylinder deactivation, progressive VTEC, Atkinson cycle. Even weird stuff like decompression braking or running the engine backwards. For an air compressor, some tinkerers have converted AC compressor for that use.

This is fantastic! Well done! I remember when I first been thought what solenoid were, so I asked if it was possible to replace cams with solenoids ... I was told I was an idiot ... This is a very good lesson for everyone on not giving up and to never listen to people bringing you down.

It's amazing seeing this kind of thing sprouting out of some random garage... Seems to be kind of a recurring theme in recent history. Kudos bro and thank you for being part of the open-source community. In these times where every ounce of substance is commodified to death, open-source idea sharing is a much-needed bright light in a deep dark tunnel. Peace out.

@Wesley Kagan Honestly I don't think TRvid deserves content this good. You should have your own TV show.

Amazing, if you would like to improve pneumatic version to make it more usable you can order a toroidal shape LPG tank. You can use it for your air and put it in place of spare wheel (they are designed for this purpose and have many sizes to choose from). This could save you some space for bigger air compressor in the trunk.

With the throttle position switch, you can have a variable cam timing based on engine load. Use vacuum as indicator also. Econobox for daily driving and just open throttle and activate power max. Variable valve timing unlimited.

This is a great idea with lots of possibilities, I hope it works well. This may be a problem: If the controller fails at high speed, the 6 pound springs might not pull the valves closed fast enough. If you have connected diodes across the solenoid coils, they will slow down the response. Without the diodes there will be large voltage spikes. Varistors or R-C networks might work and not slow down as much. EEVblog has a video on Inductor Back EMF: trvid.com/video/video-hReCPMIcLHg.html
