“Pokémon Detective Pikachu” marks the first time the classic anime characters have stepped onto the big screen and into the real world as photo-realistic creatures. We spoke with MPC Film VFX Supervisor Pete Dionne about how much work went into bringing the beloved anime/game characters to life, from studying animal biology to hiring a famous mime from New Zealand.

The rigging process; as a student learning various aspects of computer animation, I think it's nice to learn about stuff like that, so it would have been cool to actually see the bone structures and joints come into play with this. I appreciate the video though, it gave me a point of reference.

The true stars of the movies are the animators and special effect artists. Without them, any movie that used special effects, and cgi, probably wouldn't be as big of a hit as they are. Thank you to all of the people that make the magic come true

I didn't enjoy the plot, but the animators made everything feel so real and vivid that made the movie fantastic. When the movie started and we got the first scene of the city I started quietly crying because of how beautiful everything was, felt like I was having a dream. EDIT: Well, Justice Smith said himself at 7:58, it was like a dream come true.

The moment I saw the Pokemons in the promotional videos, I was FLOORED by the animation and design. How they managed to make them 1) incredibly faithful to the source material, 2) hyper realistic, AND 3) avoiding the uncanny valley is incredible. And my gosh, they are so darn cute. I thought it was a really interesting design decision for them to give Pikachu such human-like facial muscles (like his brow bone), but they pulled it off well. Bravo to this animation team--so happy to hear that they worked closely with the Pokemon company. Maybe people will finally cut CGI some slack ;)

This is the kind of live-action I appreciate. They managed to make the characters come to life without having to make them unidentifiable. A Pikachu is still a Pikachu, Jigglypuff looks like Jigglypuff, and so on and so fourth. The real problem with putting cartoons in the real world is that many artist focus too much on making them look very realistic which only makes them look uncanny. But here, they manage to get it right. And I honestly prefer this over another Ash Ketchum movie, because knowing the fandom or any fandom in general, is that many would complain and argue if they don't get the main characters perfect which loses potential movie goers. So I like this original idea, plus I think they hinted that Red is in the movie.
