Toy Story 1: Let's make the first cgi film about toys because they're easy to animate Toy Story 4: Let's make a cgi film about toys as hard to animate as possible
@Drawmatic But you do notice it. Not consciously of course but subconsciously. That's why Pixar movies are so engaging. Of course the story is a key too.
animation deserves more recognition. this movie is pure art and this is what should be winning best picture at the academy. the amount of work, research, talent and perfectionism thats put into animation is way more than the rest of the real life made movies imo
Pretty much everything else in this film failed horribly and this makes this film as terrible as Cars 2 and brave. This is the worst Toy story film in the franchise... wow.
imagine crediting the voice actors for carrying this movie. the hardwork put by artists and animators imo have far more credit to animated movies than the people voicing them, I mean the voice was already pre-recorded for them
@roxanne Voice actors don't shame them, idk... But no one is shaming voice actors? That's how they should work, and if someone harass them, then it's a crime... BTW, if you like animated movies, watch AKIRA it's an anime, the animation is so greattttt~
@O that’s true tho they do deserve much more credit than what they receive but I never said that they shouldn’t. The point I was trying to convey was that voice acting can be difficult to do as well I didn’t want people trying to shame them for doing a wonderful job. I do agree that the animators should be respected and be paid more since it can be extremely stressful if done in a short period of time such as Frozen 2 ..man behind the scenes that was a disaster. 😳
I saw this movie yesterday. I'm so proud of every single person that worked on this film. We need to take a moment to just appreciate the effort, time and dedication the crew went through to make this excellent film
The beginning scene in Toy Story 4 with the rain and stuff looked exactly like real life. (The rest of the movie too) but the rain and everything was just perfect
You don't have to do CG animation. CG is more like puppeteering with a computer anyway. Lots of people still really like the traditional 2d animation, which you can do with just a pencil and paper, or a drawing app like Flipaclip
I’ve just started making short story animations and realized how hard job it is, I love toy story series so much and now I even more appreciate and admire the wonderful works. ❣️
Sometimes I watch parts of Toy Story 4 just to marvel at the beautiful animation. This makes it even more clear how much time and effort went into even the tiniest details.
Kudos to everybody who contributed in making this movie! I love the "Toy Story" series and it is part of my childhood. I just watched Toy Story 4 last night and it really hit me right in the feels. This is confirmed to be the last Toy Story movie and boy oh boy, they made a good closure for it. In my opinion, this movie is the best compared to the other first three movies. I thank you for completing my childhood. It feels really good to see a happy ending.
One step in animation that was missed in this video: Stereo! There is a dedicated team for processing the film so it can be watched in 3D with glasses. It is usually a post-production technique, but a great film considers the stereo placement of characters and cameras from as early as storyboarding. In Pixar films, a special multi-rig camera is used within the software to create the two eye-placements needed for stereo viewing. It seems subtle, but there's a genuine art to it - where you place the characters in 3D space is highly effective as an art form! :)
Wow I've never appreciated animation as much as I do after watching this video. It's crazy how far animation has come. I didn't even notice until people took the movies side by side. I have so much respect for the people who works in animation with so much details put into just one shot.
And my friends said they didn't like animated movies. *they watched the Lion king remake but refused to watch this masterpiece* Good thing my parents took me to watch Toy story 4.
The fluid simulation and the remote control skunk genuinely looks real to me. The leap in 9 years from Toy Story 3-4 is incredible! It looks so different to me. To the point of distraction because I'm constantly getting distracted by how realistic background objects look.
I’m so grateful that it didn’t disappoint and I was just as excited watching this one with my kid ... than when I saw it when I was a kid. Thank you Pixar
I’m suprised that nothing leaked after 5 years of making the film. The script was written well over half a decade ago , has been through many hands and nothing leaked at all? Amazing
Not really; They had the idea for the film 5 years ago, but as you know scripts change alot. They probably had the full script only like two years ago, and then began animating it.
I just cry watching how they’ve put such details into this film. It’s crazy and beautiful! Realism in 3d world work has always been my dream and i cannot believe how far disney/pixar have accomplished. Also, the rainy scene was probably one of the hardest to simulate and render?!
I'm so mad its detailed but I'm so proud of the animators and staff who paid attention to detail. I support them and their hard work. It's amazing how much they changed in over 20 years.
People give modern technology too much credit. While supercomputers make films like this faster to render, it still takes many people a ton of work to input these details frame by frame.
Yes, don't get me wrong, the computer does a lot of the work compared to traditional animation wherein the animator literally had to draw every frame -- but the animator still must pose keyframes by hand, usually one key every 2 frames, and the computer fills in the space between.
urmomgay Softwares don’t make the animation by themselves. Movements are made with emotions. Sure there a softwares who can make simple animations like a flag blowing, or explosions. But when it comes to facial animation and body movement that has to be human made.
Amazing how you can look back and jaw-drop at how much work went into a cartoon many years ago, and then look at cartoons now and still jaw-drop that despite having more technology we still do just as much if not more work to make new cartoons. Disney-Pixar knows it’s not enough to have the best tools, you also need to use them to their best advantages.
Yup, every video I see about how people make these amazing animated movies, every time I see how much work and passion you have to put on a project like this, I convince mysef a little bit more that I want to study animation 💟💟❤
@Schuyler SavageNo, no actually I m from India and we don't have that many studios which produce original content and we just outsource our services , but I have worked on many movies from Marvel, Disney, Netflix and i started learning animation when I was like 17 now i am 27 , i also pursued formal education in animation then after college i got a job in Disney India and now i have my own studio and we outsource our services to bigger studios and business clients
@Vijnix That’s so cool this is your Job! Congrats! Do you animate for Disney? Star Wars clone wars lol?? Who do you work for if you don’t mind sharing? And how did you get into the job!? I’d love to learn how to animate 3D, just for myself.
@superFTW that’s the key right there friend! I guarantee everyone who works this job does it for the love and joy of animation. Yes, they only make the medium income for a middle class person, but they spend their entire lives helping to turn imagination into reality!! Think of the joy they can feel they bring into many lives? Including my own! And probably yours! Great comment :) you hit the nail on the head. Man I’m just so blown away at how amazing of a job this would be for someone who loves toys and art and imagination and story telling and animation. It’s like someone literally living out their dream! The same as some of the interviews I’ve watched by people who work for Lego. So cool! These adults who loved Lego so much as a kid they truly found the path to follow to make it so that as a adults their job is to find new and intricate ways to put bricks together to create, idk, a new Lego Star Wars toy:):)
It's crazy to see just how much detail they went into for this movie. I mean like things that people wouldn't really care about or even notice but I'd be the same way if I was working on it because I'm a borderline perfectionist and would keep thinking that everyone who is watching it is looking for details like this, especially on a big screen where it's much easier to pick out the details in movies. But they really did such a great job on this and all of their other movies as well. I mean, you can see why they are well liked and well loved. Awesome job guys, girls and all the rest who helps bring these incredible movies to life.
Props to the whole team, not just the voice actors. They all play a very important part and try so hard to make us feel like we're there. Job really well done.
@nuvles Exactly 😃,Using a Reference for The Clothing Or hairstyle of a character isn't bad But if you are entirely just copying a reference and drawing it isn't good (in my opinion)
Main problem is people often use the terms referencing, copying and tracing in wrong context or interchange the meanings that’s why there is so much confusion.
As a recent graduate animation student I can say this video does a good job at giving a succinct, detailed, yet generalized description of the animation pipeline. Good job. For those who haven't watched Toy Story 4, go see it.
So they stared this film in 2015 OMGGG that's so much work and dedication, when I watch the movie I noticed the visuals were a lot lot better and looked very realistic I was really excited to see the improvement and I was telling people about this but our friends didn't really care, also after seeing this video I have way way more appreciation for animators:)
As an animator, I can say that people never seem to appreciate all the effort that goes into an animated film. Sure great animation can’t save a bad movie, but the animation should at least be appreciated.
THANK YOU for such a detailed video. As someone who's in animation, it absolutely drives me up the wall when audiences think "animators" are responsible for literally everything... NO!!!
It's already 1 year after the movie released, but the animation feels like yesterday because their animation is on another level. Toy's story can't be seen like it's an old movie unless there's a new Toy's story movie.
What movie made you cry more? Toy Story 3 or 4? My opinion: Toy Story 3 was heartbreaking. It always makes cry. Toy Story 4 was depressing, but not too sad to make me cry.
I didn't cry with nither of them, but I almost cryed with both...but in the forth one, I just got a bit creeped out...the freaking Bensons are so creepy....and I'm a Scaredy Cat that is affraid of any or almost any type of dolls lol...but...I love both movies a lot anyways...
One of my dreams is to participate in the creation of a movie, and then going to the premiere with my friends and family, seeing the product of months or even years of work finally coming to life and thinking "I helped this movie coming together" Idk, it would just magical
Great video but the one thing that often gets skipped over (and seems the most complex to me) is the animating of the mouths to the recorded voices. This was VERY lightly touched on or at least the recording of the actors and their facial expressions was mentioned but this should be a focus of a future video if you guys are ever looking for a new video idea....the voice-overs, it appears they are recorded and then the mouths are built around that and references to facial expressions are blended into this as well at that stage. Would be great to see a detailed highlight of that step in the process. Keep up the great work! Loved this video!
It’s always astonishing to me that with these kinds of movies, and the level of effort Pixar animators put in- someone has to tell you that “to animate this choo choo train, you need to have a great understanding of physics” with a straight face
@Bria Pryor thats not true... they almost lost the whole movie but someone had saved the film on a drive which saved pretty much the whole movie. so they lost some of it, but didnt have to remake the entire movie in a year. its impossible to mave a movie like that in a whole year, i dont know where you are getting this info from.
Pretty astounding how these little things make or break a movie. They could have gone mediocre and just ran with the fame, but they chose to go all out. Much respect on the amount of work and diligence required to be top of the line.
Pixar animators deserve a salute for years of hard work for such beautifully crafted lovable movies....I mean I have been watching Pixar movies since my childhood. Still never realized the job behind those impactful and humorous and memorable storytelling and animation...This grew my respect for the animators and movies.
Thank you so much for sharing!! Thank you ALL STAFF in PIXAR!! Thank you for creating a great animation in the world!!! Love Toy Story VEEERY MUCHHH!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm thinking of going to school for animation, but didn't know where in the process would I like to fit in whenever I graduate. Looks like I prefer to be a part of the beginning third of making a Pixar film.
I saw this movie with my 3 kids and it was incredible! I was 10 years old when I saw the first Toy Story and now I'm 33, it's amazing to see how far these movies have come! I still enjoy them now as much as I did when I was 10.
