For anyone wondering -- the method to stop nuclear fission in an emergency is called a "SCRAM" (i.e. if there is a problem you better "scram" outta here). In a SCRAM, the control rods are pushed all the way in to terminate the nuclear reaction. There's also "suicide squads" if everything fails. Some of the most ballsy people on earth who are willing to risk their life to stop reactions in order to save thousands of others.

I’d be interested to see how the control rods are distributed within the core using horizontally mounted fuel clusters this way. It seems like it would make it a lot more difficult to reach centerline fuel clusters with the rods making a scram less effective and producing more unwanted fission.

This had to be the most entertaining way to learn how a nuclear plant works. I'm sure there's a lot more technical stuff to it, but it gets his point across. Great job! 👍

This is specifically a CANDU type reactor. Very good video on how they work. If a video like this interests you you should look into other models like the RBMK type reactors that were used at chernobyl and are still in use in Russia to this day.

Fun fact: The standard that encompasses the distribution piping to the turbines is found under ASME B31.1 These standards are very high.

It was nicely done video but it actually is only kind of how this style of reactor works. For instance, the power of this style reactor (CANDU) is controlled by vertical columns of water which they control the level of. Also the fuel bundles are contained within zircalloy tubes that run the length of the Calandra. The heavy water flows through each of the tubes being distributed to each tube by a manifold on either side of the Calandra. That heavy water is warmed by 50C as it passes through. Once heated, the heavy water passes its heat to light water via a heat exchanger that is within the containment. The light water is boiled and that is what passes through the turbine.

AFAIK, the heavy water is served as a safety "swimming pool" where the heating core is submerged in, to confine the excessive neutrons, and a liquid sodium metal circulation is used as the first stage of heat transfer, and the regular water/steam circulation is the last power generating stage.

Now I understand how a nuclear power plant works based on nuclear fission. Thanks for the video and explanation. I hope to the see the tokamak Nuclear fusion reactor function efficiently in the near future. It will be the solution to all the energy problem we have and will definitely change the world we live in so many ways. Best of luck guys.

i have a question : how long a nuclear reactor still in action . i mean when they start on the reactor. when they shut it down , after few minutes , jours , days , months ? ( not talking about a reactor lifetime ) im asking about fission , how long the reactor Can still On

nuclear power plants are of great economic interest to those countries that own it but to have such a plant requires great care in use and not all countries can have this luck, countries that do not have economic and political stability find it difficult to manage such a plant. anyway i like the video because it shows how it works 👍 thank you 😜

In nuclear power plants, neutrons collide with uranium atoms, splitting them. ... In the core of nuclear reactors, the fission of uranium atoms releases energy that heats water to about 520 degrees Farenheit. This hot water is then used to spin turbines that are connected to generators, producing electricity.

"This hot water is then used to spin turbines" it is steam, not water anymore

Just curious: where do the neutrons come from inside the reactor? How are they 'started' to hit Uranium atoms ?
drëæmr
drëæmr Yıl önce
@Paul Raymond Margeot i guess only one neutron is hit and then it is just a chain reaction. Neutrons keep getting emitted from the new neutron atoms.

Three mistakes... 1. Uranium atom once split into two, again Uranium atoms don't get formed, some other lighter elements r formed, like Cs-137+Sr-90. 2. Heavy water cooling the fuel bubbles in tube is called primary heat transport system ...not Moderator 3. Moderator is filled inside calandria around the tubes containing fuel (outside the tubes) and it reduced speed of neutrons to facilitate fission
