We all know what the moral to The Lorax is, right? Respect the environment and conservation. Well guess what, you're WRONG! At least, you are wrong if we are talking about the 2012 movie version of The Lorax. You see, that movie made some... interesting changes to the story we all know and love. Changes that kind of ruin that message. In fact, it almost turns it on it's head and says the opposite. Yet, the movie STILL claims to be about environmentalism. Get ready, I am about to expose all of the LIES of The Lorax movie!

I think the difference between the consumer and the big business men is the disconnect. Most of the thneed buyers weren’t in the forest so they couldn’t see the consequences of their greed whereas the onceler can clearly see and is warned repeatedly that his actions are ruining the world.

I remember in my ethics class we were given a situation exactly like this where a local business was making a large profit yet discovered they were harming the local ecosystem. The main point of the lecture was that for corporate social responsibility every stakeholder, inside the company and outside, should see a positive result and the company has more than just a duty to be the most efficient it can be but to not harm anyone and not just rely on the knowledge problem to prevent losses and changes to operations.

I have complaint about the bottled water analogy whenever it’s brought up. Tap water is not safe to drink in so many places without having to buy either bottled water or plastic water filters

He means in places like the UK and USA where water is safe to drink from the tap. Some people don't drink tapped water when it's readily available bc they prefer the taste of bottled water which I guess would be okay if it wasn't free from a tap

Ok cool but tbh, another way the Onceler can bypass needing to cut down trees, is use some fancy sucking machine to pluck the fibers of the truffle trees more sustainably, so then Thneed production could both be both efficient, and won't ruin the environment as badly. If they can build this fancy Axe machine, they can build that.
1810Jeff Aylar önce
I believe he was originally plucking them by hand and he didn't take all of the trees foliage only some of it until his mom said otherwise. But even then he would have benefitted from planting more specifically to harvest and he could have done some r&d into speeding up their growth using fertilization and improving their growing conditions.
Mr.J 3 aylar önce
Also, the world wouldn't actually "run out of air" like the movie suggests if we lost all of our trees considering the fact that most of earths air (70 percent) is actually created by phytoplankton and other micro organisms. Would it be much hotter without trees? Absolutely, an oxygenless wasteland however, not by any stretch of the imagination.
1810Jeff Aylar önce
@Luca M Life would find a way, certain species of phytoplankton would adapt to these changes and fill the niche. Another flaw is that they act as if truffula trees are the only tree species but they can't possibly be the only one so another tree type would fill that niche. Sure no more thneeds but trees would continue to exist.

There are reasons to believe phytoplancton would also suffer from the absence of trees: less trees equals hotter climate, hitter climate means hotter water and hotter water means less solubility for gases which leads to less resources for microflora. It is all connected in rhe biosphere. I may not be giving this enough thought, being a 3 minutes comment, but still...

O’Hair may have saved everyone but he still manipulated the whole town into thinking they NEED the bottled air, a way for him to get money.
ProfessorPrel 15 gün önce
Matpat, I have a question? Did you see the movie? Because I did, and let me explain it The oncler was told by the lorax he could make the thneeds without cutting down the threes, and he did, but his family told him that didnt give them as big of a profit as they did if they cut them down. That is not on the consumer, that is totally on the producer I have another question. If Nestle charged more for their products, would that money go to the company, or to the starting familys in Afrika that works to gather the chocolate. If would go to the company. And if people protester by not buying it, making nestle shut down, Someone Else would just pay the, less instead And then we have ohare. We are told at the end that he directly charges people for the air. It was a reason that Line got removed from the film. He is simply brainwashing them into buying a product they dont need. This video has dangerous information, and you have to inform your audience that you are wrong. Dont ignore it, or you are no better than the villain of the movie
ASHH PLAYZ 7 aylar önce
Matpat is literally saying that no one is a victim to O'Hare's smog when literally there is a glowing child, and i blame the parents for the destruction of the forest cuz the mom said to chop down trees and when the business started to collapse Once-lers' mother took all the money and left him in the barren wasteland, and yes the consumer is to blame for it a little bit cuz they encouraged to chop down trees.

Kanti 5 aylar önce
Spot on. Another way to look at it is, even if O'Hare, or the Once-ler, had a 'change of heart' and stopped selling their products once they saw the damage it was causing, that wouldn't eliminate the demand for it. Some other person, or company, would simply step up and start producing to fill that demand instead. Nothing would really change.

1.) I thought that the onceler also came into everything being messed up, and that he just added to it. On the other Hand while ya what Ohare was doing wasn’t evil at first, except for the last part about not planting trees. I get that the consumer is in the wrong, but they all learn their lesson and switch to prioritizing nature, making not one or two people the bad guy, but everyone
Chris G
Chris G 6 aylar önce
I got that message from when I first saw the movie, but I didn’t consider teds shawty to only want one tree. On top of that, both O’Hare and Ted are included in the collective “us”. Instead of working to improve conditions, both looked to manipulate the desires of their people (on one hand air, on the other just a product that eliminates the need for other products). I feel both can’t be excluded from blame, (and the Lorax is that nigga.)

No. Any business that doesn’t sell a product that consumers want is one doomed to fail. Lemonade stands don’t open in the winter because they can’t sell enough in the winter to even equal the cost of the materials. Corporate businesses have more costs than lemonade, so the choice they have is to sell wanted things or go bankrupt, not whether or not it’s moral to sell the product.

@Luca M You’re right. That does sound bizarre. I just meant corporations technically have the choice to not give into consumer demand, even if they usually do not go for that choice.

@Frost i get that, but the only problem with these types of business is that they stopped becoming businesses and if you think Abt it became governments, o heir took his business and made it pretty much the only business with maybe a few others under his control, same with the oncler, he made so many shneeds and everyone wanted one that he was pretty much the only business making him almost like s government cuz he could control the people, the problem isn't businesses it's when there's no other option, just think if there were 2 air companies instead of just o heirs and the other one had good morals that one would've come out on top and then more companies would've been made and the consumers would decide which ones they want to stay for business, if anything this shows that powerful government is currupt as it always is, ik China you can't just start any bud you need permission from the government of what your allowed to do, yes we have restrictions on the us but anyone can pretty much start any type of business, for example of you don't like Starbucks you can always go to another place for coffee or just make your own
Michael Daniel Espinoza
@Frost but he does realize, he just realized to late, he was starved of his mother's love and being loved in general that once he made s product that made everyone love him he kept making it with his mom manipulating, him to keep doing so, I'm not saying what he did was right but you have to understand where he's coming from, and like i said eventually he did realize what he had done and that's why he helped the kid out in the movie

@inugeek411 Simply harvesting the tufts would've still messed with the ecosystem, as the seeds in the tufts were destroyed rather than falling to the ground and growing new trees. Tuft-less trees wouldn't be able to provide shade for the ecosystem in the dirt, so any random seeds that dropped would've been more likely to wither. Maybe they should've just harvested every other tuft, or only part of each tuft? We also don't know if or how quickly tufts grow back.
Tester Wulf :3
Tester Wulf :3 6 aylar önce
@inugeek411 They movie actually talks about this and the family actively say they don't care as cutting the tree down is faster, why spend time going up and gathering the tufts when you can build a big machine to cut them down and sort the tuft and wood?
Little_ Dreamer177
@inugeek411 I'm just kind of watching this argument and you know what, it doesn't matter. You can't change the past so at least the people in the town are happy with the present that they now have even though a lot of unnecessary stuff had to happen. But it was a funny ddebate to observe 😂

@Dragoonaer V.nlzoro It's fine for others to try to prove the character is something else and give it labels, but in fiction, the character is defined by the creator just like every other fictional aspect of a story. Say for example if I create a human character and I call him a tree. You can clearly argue that it's not a tree, it's a human, but at its root (get it? root? you can laugh now.) it's a tree because I am the creator of this fictional character, and I gave him the title "Tree". You don't even have to believe it's a tree or call it a tree, but it is a tree.

Good video, except you missed in your calculation that the air in the bottles is actually compressed (as you see in the musical number).

I'm just a random watcher and I must say, I would really really use this video to study an environmental science lesson about this film if I had one today because this actually makes a lot of sense.

It's funny that Matt Pat says that everyone in thneedvile is perfectly healthy even though we see in the opening minutes of the movie there are glowing children
LepantoRosary1571 6 aylar önce
@Onba It's implied that the kid contacted the radiation via water, which passes through air and clears impurities as rain, so there could still be a connection.

Perfectly healthy glowing children. ‘sthaproblem?
Onba 6 aylar önce
The glowing children thing is confusing because it implies radiation is involved but the story is about air quality. I can't blame Mat for ignoring it, it's not logical. It was probably just thrown in because the writers realized the people's lives were too good looking.

The only theory I would have on this is human adaptation/evolution although the biggest problem with this is both of these need more time to accrue than the time frame

But the thing you miss with paper/lumber companies and managed companies is the forests they replant aren't really forests, they do not support the biodiversity they did naturally, they are engineered to produce the most amount of wood, without other goals in mind like conserving biodiversity

I think this movie still said the message. Like you said, the message was that we were the ones to cause the downfall of the trees. Just like us.

Unfortunately while lumbar companies do replant trees they do it in a way that isn’t helpful to the environment. Just the logging companies, they don’t plant diverse trees. Just the same one in a line over and over again, this affects local wild life and populations. Nature doesn’t grow in a line.

I feel like the Lorax movie could be great in an alternate timeline and the cut song Biggering kinda proves this. Thneedville, a town so used to how awful the environment is that they happily sing opening numbers talking about their abysmal living conditions and think they're living in paradise is a genius addition that honestly could have added a whole other layer to the story. Also it's kinda ironic how in extending the story for an hour, at least half of the slow escalation of the original story is just rushed through in a single musical number

You lost me when you blamed it on the consumer. That "You vote with your dollar" thing is bullshit, especially today when most of the production chains aren't transparent and 50% of the store is filled by Nestlé(And another 40% by Unilever, which is just as bad)
The "Bottled air machines" are really just air purifiers. That's how the air got so clean there. Almost if not everyone has one. I thought really hard about this a while ago.

That makes sense. The jugs are just a part that doesn't actually need to be replaced except by design. Like a pressurized bottle that the machine slowly leaks out and stops working when the pressure runs out or something.

Not arguing with the "Consumer was the real villain, all along!" conclusion, but I'm going to take exception with the other conclusion, that the corporates weren't. They just represent the collective desires of the group, but are not exclusive to them. Doing what everyone wants you to do, even if it's wrong, is still wrong. Furthermore, going something stupid is not an excuse with regards to ethical actions. It's still your responsibility to be educated enough in your business to prevent harm to people or environments. I'd also like to point out that you completely missed the point you _should_ have drawn, which was that the film is _saying_ one thing, but _showing_ another, intentionally. The "moral" of the story is not backed up by the reality of the film, as you pointed out. I believe this is an example of some subtle corporate propaganda. I can see the boardroom now: "Ok (almost exclusively) guys, this is what the movie is going to _say._ Now obviously we want the viewers to think _exactly the opposite,_ now what do we _show_ them?" "Ooh! I know! We'll make the villains sympathetic and show them a paradise! ...and if they argue that the Once-ler was acting in a non-sustainable way, we'll just say he's _stupid_ not _evil!"_
LetsPlayCrazy 4 aylar önce
Before I watch this (and undoubtably get convinced by you, because no matter how ridicoulus a theory, you make it seem plausible!) let me say one thing: This is exactly the lesson the lorax wants to teach us (well more the original but... the thought counts): A bad person is not just evil incarnate. He justifies his own behaviour and beliefs by twisting and turning the facts, often unknowingly. Alright... with that out of the way... explain to me Matt: Why is the lorax evil? :D
XperimentorEES 6 aylar önce
The problem about fighting back against a corporatocracy is the unknown time limit, there's a shifting threshold depending on how many things it gets it's hands in, and at that point it'll become too big to fail. Mass denial of purchases won't matter anymore because the company (or conglomerate) is no longer reliant on the products that made them successful, and even if they were the extra sources of income would slow down their decline long enough to recover by changing their focus. In short, as long as they don't show too much or let it be known how corrupt they are, they'll eventually become too powerful to overthrow by conventional logic and means, and when that happens they'll effectively enslave the people.

Once we had a talk in a class where the teacher asked us to give our thoughts on plastic, and most of my classmates were like "grrr, plastic bad" and then our teacher went on to show statistics about how much pollution platic has avoided since its introduction to the market, and how the problem is mostly due to the overuse and the disposal of it, it's yet another example of the "it's not the product but the consumer" kind of troubles
