We've been talking a LOT about the Joker lately, but today we are shifting focus to a different version of our smiling bad guy. The Heath Ledger version of the Joker from Christopher Nolan's Batman movie, The Dark Knight. I rewatched it recently and started to wonder, have we misunderstood this story the whole time? Could the Joker actually be the HERO of Gotham City, not Batman? We shall see, Theorists!

That's why I like the joker he doesn't have superpowers but he's still the best "villain" also anyone else feel like when a character as op powers its not as interesting to watch and as an example like captain marvel her powers were so strong she just became arrogant like no one could beat her like look at Thanos if she was actually there "concerned" that Thanos could wipe out HALF THE POPULATION FOR GODS SAKE she could have probably beat him but instead she just said she was busy with other threats on other planets but like i said before Thanos is a threat to everyone in the universe if he snapped (he did) and when she was actually there her face was emotionless like she did not even care like he wasn't even a threat at all. P.S What I'm tryna say is having no super powers or not as strong ones makes them a better person not all the time but still and its just better to watch. (Also just usually make really strong ppl be good ppl unless its a villain also don't make it unreasonable that someone who's not as strong can beat like everyone tho)

“Some men just want to watch the world burn” isn’t a literal statement. The thief in Burma stole because he wanted to expose the greed and materialism of the people he stole from. He wanted to mock them and the lengths they would go to in order to catch him. The very act of burning the forest was yet another way in which he exposed their greed. His intention wasn’t to make them burn the forest, it was to expose their greed.
Сергей Губарев
Not only greed, but also lust for power.

I think another important point is that the act of burning the forest down was itself cruel.I mean they went to another nation, tried to bribe their leaders, and when a bandit tried to resist, they burnt an entire forest down to catch him?? Think of all the people and animals and resources that would have been lost in that fire

The whole point of that speech was always to let the audience know he does have a plan. He isn’t “an agent of chaos” in the usual sense of the word, he’s unbelievably methodical and meticulous in his scheme, he just needs to play into an extremely common fear of the unknown.
E M

The whole monologue on "if a military vehicle blows up, nobody panics." That's what makes me buy this theory. All those tragic events of war are considered necessary and so they are accepted, the ends justify the means. If that is how he understands it, his means are the acts he commits in this movie and the ends are an uncorrupted Gotham. Machiavellian.
Crescent_Midnight
The whole ‘agent of chaos’ thing could be the joker making the metaphors that there has to be a bit of chaos before there can be order, it creates a balance.

He still forced the evacuation of every hospital in Gotham for that, in which people may have died; then actually blew up the hospital, killing people due to lack of medical equipment. He would have had to be extraordinarily naiive to think that threatening to blow up a hospital (and then actually carrying it out) is a victimless crime.

The Dark Knight got me thinking about how values alone shouldn’t define people. I noticed that The Joker achieved things that I strive for. He let go of vices, lives in the moment and doesn’t expect a reward. However, he twisted those values into something horrifying. ‬

“How about I cut you up into little pieces and feed you to your pooches. Then we’ll see how loyal a hungry dog really is” This one quote can perfectly describe the message Joker was trying to convey upon Gotham through the whole movie.
4eyesinthecorner

Well this just makes so much sense and gives me even more reason to love the joker as a “villain”. These kind of superhero stories have always irritated me in that the “hero” spends their time fighting crime and putting the bad guys in jail when there’s generally a much larger underlying reason for such crime in the first place. They have all of the resources and means to be able to eradicate crime from the bottom up but get fixated on the more surface level petty crimes that they don’t see the big picture. This take on the story where the joker is actually the “hero” perfectly reflects a lot of the pretences and issues in our society. Also, it totally makes sense to call the joker a consequentialist in his beliefs rather than just a crazy man who’s sole goal is chaos (though there’s no denying that he isn’t entirely sane). We even studied scenes of this film when doing a lesson about utilitarianism is religious studies.

When matpat made a video on why Batman didn’t save Gotham in the dark knight rises, the thumbnail made it look like Batman caused massive destruction to gotham. But then I watched it and turns out he was just saying Batman simply didn’t have enough time. However Bane did say that his motive is to fulfill Ra’s Al Ghul’s destiny. So I’m not very sure, but maybe had Batman left Ra’s to die in that building in Batman Begins, then the whole plot of Begins and Rises may end up not happening.

Mat could have stated that this interpretation of Joker is more in line with the philosophy of Anarchy, which is akin to chaos because it seeks to abolish/undermine/disrupt hierarchies in favor of returning power/control to communities. I think you missed the most important part. The Ferries, i think that was the ultimate test for Joker to see if the city was worth saving. If either ferry blew up, it meant the people of Gotham had been corrupted and Joker would've probably given up and let Batman take him into custody with Harvey killing Gordon's family and effectively plunging the city into chaos. Joker let Batman know because the ferries reaffirmed the idea the city could be fixed. Like in Joker's "Everybody loses there minds" speech the idea is that Gotham should fundamentally realize the weight of every single life, from the gang bangers to soldiers. The message in the ferry scene is that the lives aboard are equal regardless if your a petty criminal or a scared civilian. The Joker's line about liking knifes because it allows the Joker to be more intimate with his victim then a gun, he understands the purpose and weight of every single murder he commits.

Either I read that entire paragraph wrong or you are saying that this scene makes him look better. You are far wrong, because you are forgetting the most important part of that scene. Then ending. In my mind, the key to being self aware, and open to new ideas, is to always keep in mind you could be wrong, and aren't the 'hero'. I always keep myself aware that I very much could eh wrong, or that it's just MY beliefs. Morals are subjective, I'm right and wrong are subjective, I just do my best based on my own view point. My own moral compass and beliefs, aren't any more just or valid than anyone elses, so the best I can do is follow my own beliefs and morals, while accepting that they could be wrong.

This is clearly right. The brilliancy of this entire Film is that it makes the Joker look evil and insane for most of it's duration - trapping the viewer to come to the "wrong" conclusion in the end (I certanly fell for it, as I first watched the movie). In actually, all of the main characters (Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, Gordon, Joker) all want to make the City a better place - everyone in a different way. The real enemies are of structural nature: The gap between rich and poor and the corruption. I think it's hard to say if the actions of the Joker were nessecary - we never get to see a timeline in which no Joker exists. It is though to assume that the actions of the other players were just simply not enough - as one year after the events of the first movie the mafia was still going strong. The story told isastounding - as is the action, pacing and music. Masterpiece by Nolan for sure.

I will say Joaquin Phoenix did an amazing job as the Joker, but overall that wasn’t the Joker we know and love, Heath Ledger did the greatest job as the Clown Prince of Crime I must also say that Joker may have saved Gotham but it felt unintentional, after all he was still gonna blow up the boats near the end, so it becomes pretty clear that he wasn’t trying to save Gotham, but rather he was trying to break city’s soul, and he just so happened to save Gotham after Batman stops Two Face

Late to the show, but think about this trilogy frequently so I gotta say something. Cool theory and it's always nice to see other people take the time to delve into the story from every angle. I disagree with this whole premise, however. I can see where this theory comes from, except for one HUGE thing. If this theory were correct or even the idea of this theory being a possibility, there wouldn't be a third movie. Most, if not all, of the major themes of The Dark Knight Rises are associated with redemption for what the Joker did to Gotham, and more importantly, Gotham's main protagonists. If he were truly a hero, the main motivations of Bruce Wayne and other major protagonists would have no foundation. If the Joker were a hero, he at the very least failed, because a new, yet old, threat came (back) to Gotham in the form of Ra's al Gul's original plan.

I really hate that quote. People quote this, and lines from other Hollywood movies as if they're some sort of profound wisdom. The line is nonsense anyway. Usually one dies, and then is named a hero, but even if they're named a hero in life, they don't become a villain by order of living longer.

Good theory, and I could definitely buy into it.... BUT, I do have one issue. When Alfred says “Some men, just wanna watch the world burn,” with regards to the bandit, he isn’t talking about LITERALLY burning the world down, but rather the chaos that ensues. It’s like when you antagonise someone, you do it to get a reaction, the bandit stole the stones, and just threw them away, all to incite a reaction out of the British. Now you can say he was doing it just for kicks, but after listening to your theory, it makes me wonder, what if the Bandit in Alfred’s story, had a plan like Joker did, and that plan was to expose the British and their brutality to the local leaders, so they’d be less inclined to accept brides from them in the future? (FYI, I’m British so yes, I’m fully aware I’m s***ing on myself here as well) That, is what I believe Alfred is getting at, people like the Joker and that Burma Bandit, do what they do, to get a reaction from others.... God now I sound like that damm psychiatrist from Arkham, Hugo Strange, trying to unravel the mind of the Joker (shivers) okay that’s a bag of cats I do NOT need opened.

Heath Ledger's Joker is everyone's favourite joker. The way he outsmarts batman and the rest of gotham is just one of the 100's of reasons I love this joker.

RIP Heath Ledger. Absolute legend bro. With him at the helm Joker could do no wrong. He definitely holds a special place in all of our hearts. This theory is nice cause it adds a level of dignity to his already awesome legacy. Besides Joker he had such a diverse and dynamic acting career, I don’t mean to digress but I loved him as Casanova. But personally he was the Joker I was exposed to, grew up with and I’m grateful. That talented man gave this character his all and it shows, absolutely amazing performance and wonderful theory. Also I’m glad you hired the man who made that popular theory. I love seeing my boys cop the bag, hope y’all are doing well. Anyways, sorry for the rant if you read this far have a blessed day you wonderful child of light. I love you.

congratz you uncovered the duality between the joker and batman, chaos and order, madness and genius. thats why this was such a great movie and why heath ledger played the joker so well. and thats why even after 70 years or so these characters are still popular.

Dude 100% sign onto this theory. Also interesting to note that Alfred's story is eerily similar to Raz 'burn it all down' philosophy.

I think it's almost obvious that batman and the villains wanted the same thing: peace! It's just that batman doesnt want the villains' harsh methods. The villains were harsh but effective. Batman was sympathetic but has slow progress. This has been shown in the movies multiple times everytime batman doubts himself.

I have a theory, if Dark Knight part 1 was about league of Shadows, part 3 was about league of shadows then maybe part 2 was also about league of shadows. Maybe joker was a member of League of shadows and trying to do the leagues work in his own way. But after joker failed, the league went back to their original method in part 3. Maybe his exceptional hand to hand fighting skills that we see at certain scenes was taught to him by the league.

Considering the jokers scars are likely a result of combat. Not because of a drunk father or self inflicted for his wife. His ability to tactically plan out operations , knowledge with weapons , explosives and ability to drive a large truck which requires experience and normally a CDL to be capable of . All points to a veteran who came home to find his home being controlled by thugs and mobsters with corrupt officials turning a blind eye to the problems. His wife he speaks of likely killed herself or was killed for outstanding debts to the scum of Gotham. That is likely what set an otherwise peaceful veteran off. And created this version of the joker. As he seems to have nothing but hate and disdain for thugs and mobsters . His actions show this throughout the movie.

Wow, missed having a truly great theory that is also happens to be for a movie I've watched countless times so I can really analyze it. And sir, this one is really good. I know I'm late but he'll, it was so good.

I disagree, the joker stopped believing in Gotham a while ago and decided it should be subjected to the same chaos he was, he understood that as long as the mafia bosses and Batman where in power there would some kind of order, he destroys all of it with a single bet on the line, he believed people where born inherently bad, this is the only bet he lost and the one flaw in his plan therefore the fact that everything worked except that and Gotham survived

The Joker is the only decent part of this movie! Love this video. I can't watch the Nolan Trilogy becuase of the silly fighting style they give Bats. I mean, he's a super ninja and that's the made up fighting style they went up with. I understand it was used in a Tom Cruise movie before Batman but no one with a martial arts background could stand up to Nolan?
