We've been talking a LOT about the Joker lately, but today we are shifting focus to a different version of our smiling bad guy. The Heath Ledger version of the Joker from Christopher Nolan's Batman movie, The Dark Knight. I rewatched it recently and started to wonder, have we misunderstood this story the whole time? Could the Joker actually be the HERO of Gotham City, not Batman? We shall see, Theorists!

I frigging live for tearing apart videos just like this one, but this Matt Pat kid does such an excellent job diving so deep into movies we think we “know”, that I have an incredibly difficult time tearing apart any of his points. It’s so fucking aggravating. I’ve only been watching his videos for a few days now, and all I can do is nit pick so far, but I will not rest (yes I will) until I find one that is dead wrong and I can tear it apart like my 8yr old twins tearing apart a wrapped Christmas present on Dec 15th.

I think you missed the most important part. The Ferries, i think that was the ultimate test for Joker to see if the city was worth saving. If either ferry blew up, it meant the people of Gotham had been corrupted and Joker would've probably given up and let Batman take him into custody with Harvey killing Gordon's family and effectively plunging the city into chaos. Joker let Batman know because the ferries reaffirmed the idea the city could be fixed. Like in Joker's "Everybody loses there minds" speech the idea is that Gotham should fundamentally realize the weight of every single life, from the gang bangers to soldiers. The message in the ferry scene is that the lives aboard are equal regardless if your a petty criminal or a scared civilian. The Joker's line about liking knifes because it allows the Joker to be more intimate with his victim then a gun, he understands the purpose and weight of every single murder he commits.

Without villains, hero’s are just people. Villains are the reason a story exist, hero’s just solve the problem. I honestly think villains are the most important parts of any movie, and half the time they’re better then the hero. But in this case the hero and villain are the same people and I love it! Joker is the all-tagonist. He’s the pro and antagonist. It’s amazing
Malik Despanie
Malik Despanie 10 gün önce
Villains challenge the heroes we love to change themselves and others along the way. If the hero has no villain to defeat then why are they the hero? The audience isn't invested in the story because the hero isn't challenged in any way, is OP for no reason, and can't form connections with the audience. Make a villain all the things a bad protagonist isn't then they're the protagonist.

InSupportOfJunHado true. I just wish more movies would be about villains or just show more of a villains side of thing. That’s why I really enjoyed Venom and Megamind
When you've got a long running time release with a long window between releases, it's easy for the villain to be more important than the hero. In a regular running serial, like the comic books it's based on not so much. In the comics Batman has to balance running his business, watching his kids and throwing boomerangs at criminals, with villains being more so another obstacle than the plot's driving force half the time, while in the movies its Batman, STARRING JACK NICKLESON!

“Some men just want to watch the world burn” isn’t a literal statement. The thief in Burma stole because he wanted to expose the greed and materialism of the people he stole from. He wanted to mock them and the lengths they would go to in order to catch him. The very act of burning the forest was yet another way in which he exposed their greed. His intention wasn’t to make them burn the forest, it was to expose their greed.

No, I’m sorry I love your videos Mat Pat but this just isn’t right. Yes you are correct In saying that Batman is not Gothams best hero, Harvey Dent is Gotham’s true hero. The Joker mind you was trying to ruin Gotham’s spirit, He wanted to prove that Gotham was evil and that anyone could be as crazy as he was with a little push. He never had any intention to save Gotham in fact his plan would actually destroy Gotham. He would have proved that the violent anarchist was right and destroyed the image of Gotham’s Hero (Harvey Dent) undoing everything thing Harvey had done. But he didn’t, He was wrong and he always has been, The passengers did not choose to blow up the other boat because there is still good in Gotham it’s not evil like the Joker thought. Batman did not let the Joker win either he took the blame for the murder of Harvey and the people he killed to preserve the image of Gotham’s true Hero so that Gotham would not go back to the way it once was. The Joker did not save Gotham, Batman did not save Gotham, Harvey dent represents the good that is still lives in the heart of Gotham, Gotham saved itself.

A VERY interesting theory. While I'm not quite sure I'd agree with him being a hero, or in any way altruistic, I DO believe the Joker to be an Idealist. One that believes the world (Gotham especially) to be a rotten cesspole of corruption and despicable human behavior. I could go on forever about the why's of this, but deep down, he WISHES that there was SOMETHING good in the world. (Batman is a combined expression of this, combined with his NEED for Batman to go bad, so that he himself can feel better about his own badness, by being able to say ANYONE would go bad given the right situation. Essentially, he's preforming the Stanford Prison Experiment, but on a MUCH larger scale.) It's funny tho... On the surface, it looks like he doesn't care about his victims...but that's not true! In the comics, there is one memorable bit where his victims go to see a shrink --they actually are terrifyed of healing from their wounds, in fear he might come back and do worse--, and the shrink tries to convince them that the Joker doesn't care. The end point of that story, however, is that he DO care... He shows up victimizing the shrink, in fact. Using his deepest, darkest fears. And he ALWAYS uses the deepest, darkest fears of every victim he crosses path with. (To the degree you can wonder if he hasn't studied every single person in Gotham sometimes. lol) I'm not saying he cares about them in a loving-caring kind of way, mind you. But he DO care that they remember him. Forever. I can't say if his actions save gotham by intention or by accident, but he is certantly intending on uncovering Corruption and show the people in it their own, horrible faces. Want to know the sad thing? It's not even just Gotham. It's HUMANS. ALL Humans. And the worst part....is that he's RIGHT.

In my mind, the key to being self aware, and open to new ideas, is to always keep in mind you could be wrong, and aren't the 'hero'. I always keep myself aware that I very much could eh wrong, or that it's just MY beliefs. Morals are subjective, I'm right and wrong are subjective, I just do my best based on my own view point. My own moral compass and beliefs, aren't any more just or valid than anyone elses, so the best I can do is follow my own beliefs and morals, while accepting that they could be wrong.

I will say Joaquin Phoenix did an amazing job as the Joker, but overall that wasn’t the Joker we know and love, Heath Ledger did the greatest job as the Clown Prince of Crime I must also say that Joker may have saved Gotham but it felt unintentional, after all he was still gonna blow up the boats near the end, so it becomes pretty clear that he wasn’t trying to save Gotham, but rather he was trying to break city’s soul, and he just so happened to save Gotham after Batman stops Two Face

I really hate that quote. People quote this, and lines from other Hollywood movies as if they're some sort of profound wisdom. The line is nonsense anyway. Usually one dies, and then is named a hero, but even if they're named a hero in life, they don't become a villain by order of living longer.

It's scary how relevant that line is

The ferry prisoner's dilemma is also a demonstration that there *is* good in Gotham. It's a powerful note that breaks the story of Ras al Ghul.

Considering the rumours of the Joker coming back in the 3rd movie, it's kinda interesting trying to think if this theory would still be valid

The whole monologue on "if a military vehicle blows up, nobody panics." That's what makes me buy this theory. All those tragic events of war are considered necessary and so they are accepted, the ends justify the means. If that is how he understands it, his means are the acts he commits in this movie and the ends are an uncorrupted Gotham. Machiavellian.

So I loved this, MatPat, once again the video quality is top tier. That being said I have to point out a flaw in this, a minor flaw but a flaw. Joker only burns his half of the money. I realize this is a year old video but maybe by a stroke of luck you will see this comment.

This is clearly right. The brilliancy of this entire Film is that it makes the Joker look evil and insane for most of it's duration - trapping the viewer to come to the "wrong" conclusion in the end (I certanly fell for it, as I first watched the movie). In actually, all of the main characters (Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, Gordon, Joker) all want to make the City a better place - everyone in a different way. The real enemies are of structural nature: The gap between rich and poor and the corruption. I think it's hard to say if the actions of the Joker were nessecary - we never get to see a timeline in which no Joker exists. It is though to assume that the actions of the other players were just simply not enough - as one year after the events of the first movie the mafia was still going strong. The story told isastounding - as is the action, pacing and music. Masterpiece by Nolan for sure.

didn't you forget something in the Joker's thought process? remember the boats? he was manipulating the prisoners against the people and in doing so, by his own admission, trying to create chaos to tear the city apart.. that didn't sound like he was trying to save anything.. but anyone can speculate with a theory, as you said
Commander Critic
Commander Critic 11 aylar önce
Good theory, and I could definitely buy into it.... BUT, I do have one issue. When Alfred says “Some men, just wanna watch the world burn,” with regards to the bandit, he isn’t talking about LITERALLY burning the world down, but rather the chaos that ensues. It’s like when you antagonise someone, you do it to get a reaction, the bandit stole the stones, and just threw them away, all to incite a reaction out of the British. Now you can say he was doing it just for kicks, but after listening to your theory, it makes me wonder, what if the Bandit in Alfred’s story, had a plan like Joker did, and that plan was to expose the British and their brutality to the local leaders, so they’d be less inclined to accept brides from them in the future? (FYI, I’m British so yes, I’m fully aware I’m s***ing on myself here as well) That, is what I believe Alfred is getting at, people like the Joker and that Burma Bandit, do what they do, to get a reaction from others.... God now I sound like that damm psychiatrist from Arkham, Hugo Strange, trying to unravel the mind of the Joker (shivers) okay that’s a bag of cats I do NOT need opened.

Some good points at the end regarding Alfreds story and the 3 fighting for justice all being flawed. What about Jokers intent to blow up the ships? Which he was about to do? Additionally he could have continued to run organised crime from Arkham as he said to the Russian and gambits men they now work for him so maybe he wasn't ending anything he was just changing leadership. Joker is more warlord than hero. Noone schemed more than him. Rack it up, rack it up!!

@Jakub Rejak That last part is a good point, I think if they had the ability to, they would just respect how efficiently and consistently we harvest food (and plants I guess. We're so ballin out of control that we grow food for our food. That's some kinda weird primordial flex : p . It's wrong that we do factory farming, mainly because of the disgust mechanism that triggers when we encounter it, and mainly to assuage our ego, myself included. If we didn't feel the way we do when we see a chicken in a little box or whatever where it can't move, I dunno how much of an argument there would be against it but I digress lol

@Thrifty Freebies And then there would be some works by animals saved by humans and/or protected by them. Realistically, if the animals were sentient, there would be an ongoing debate between them whether to destroy us or help us improve. That is, if they were able to gather themselves in a large number without eating each other immediately.

Except now we have to ask a different question, are all the lives Joker has taken directly or indirectly worth the price of bringing in a new age of peace for Gotham? Are people really content sacrificing the few for the many or do we never compromise for the sake of our ideals?

Late to the show, but think about this trilogy frequently so I gotta say something. Cool theory and it's always nice to see other people take the time to delve into the story from every angle. I disagree with this whole premise, however. I can see where this theory comes from, except for one HUGE thing. If this theory were correct or even the idea of this theory being a possibility, there wouldn't be a third movie. Most, if not all, of the major themes of The Dark Knight Rises are associated with redemption for what the Joker did to Gotham, and more importantly, Gotham's main protagonists. If he were truly a hero, the main motivations of Bruce Wayne and other major protagonists would have no foundation. If the Joker were a hero, he at the very least failed, because a new, yet old, threat came (back) to Gotham in the form of Ra's al Gul's original plan.

I 100% believe this theory, I also think that the joker could have been a military veteran in his past giving him the skills, knowledge and just sheer will and determination that a lot of vets get from there services to the country.

My love hate relationship with Mat-Pat continues. But gotta concede, this guy has brains. Edit: In Alfred's defence the time period Alfred was in Burma wasn't mentioned, nor was the local government. Like the government could have been Burmese. Alfred could have been some sort of mercenary, I mean he definitely had the training cause he's an ex-spy or something. Thoughts?

6:25 bruh he literally said that he only burned his own half tho. Plus the Joker's actions literally made people afraid of testifying against the mafias that Harvey Dent had arrested before the Joker did any of his major crimes. Even if the Joker's plan was to bankrupt all the mafias(it wasn't), they would've all been arrested without his interference regardless. Seeing all these people simping for the Joker and trying to paint him as a good guy just because he was pretty badass and intriguing is honestly kinda sad.

I agree. There's also nothing whatsoever in the movie that even remotely hints at the idea that Joker "just wants to save Gotham". Not even Alfred's story, because comparing that story to real life historical is, of course, flawed. Gotham is not the real world, meaning that just because something in the setting shares a similarity to real life, that doesn't automatically make them the same thing.

I've been saying the Heath Ledger joker is actually the good guy since it came out, and the system, the cops, government etc are the bad ones. Throughout movie history, we're made to believe that the one that rebels against corrupt governments is the bad guy. I'm always in the villians side in movies, especially this one
