What I really like is the difference between hiccup and his mother. His mother said she "couldn't" kill a dragon, in the first movie hiccup said he "wouldn't". Hiccup's answer implies that, if he wanted to kill a dragon, he could. Valka's answer implies she can't physically do it. That is what makes hiccup a great leader. He can do bad things but chooses not to.
P-man_XD

Hiccup (as Astrid points out) said both "couldn't" and "wouldn't". He was just dodging the question "why didn't you?" I'm so sorry it's an interesting concept. It's just that I've memorized the entirety of most of the movies I've seen. - P-man_XD
Engineered to fail
Well, to be fair you can't totally compare their situations, while Hiccup had Toothless at his mercy and just wouldn't go on to kill him, Valka on the other hand just saw a dragon casually walking at her baby, in a true mother's instinct fashion she didn't stopped to ask herself if that dragon would leave baby Hiccup unharmed, she couldn't take the risk so she had to protect her baby (meaning she had to get rid of the threat one way or another), she wasn't in control of the outcome at all unlike Hiccup

@P-man_XD IIRC Hiccup specifically says that he couldn't kill toothless, but that he wouldn't kill a dragon.

Honestly, Toothless playing tug-of-war with Stormfly with a tree while Hiccup and Astrid talk about sensitive subjects about Hiccup's mom should've been a win.

He missed a few- 1.the fact that Stoic said when fighting Dragon, "It takes more than a little fire to kill me!" Well...-Irony 2.When Toothless and Hiccup were trying to escape running into the second Bewilderbeast's tail, with Hiccup saying, "It's now or never!", It was a reference to the first movie, when they failed to escape the Red Death's tail, resulting in a lost limb. 3. When Drago talks to Hiccup about his life, saying, "My village burned, my family taken." (And he lost a limb). Their 2 lives are almost identical, but Hiccup decides to take a different path a the moment of seeing Toothless for the first time.-just a cool contrast. Love your video's! Keep up the great review work!!

Hiccup didn't lose all of his family compared to Drago who did. The only person he "lost" leading up to that point was Valka. I think Drago's an example of what can happen if the worse got brought out from dragons.

Surprised you didn’t mention the fight between Stoic and Drago cutting in and out with the fight of the two Alpha’s. It’s showing one fight, a battle between kings, in two ways: Viking and dragon. As soon as Stoic starts losing the fight, so too does the “good” Alpha.
alwaysahiccupandastrid
Nukesandwich I read somewhere that Valka’s Bewilderbeast represents Stoick and Drago’s obviously represents Drago. But Valka’s Bewilderbeast is like Stoick in that he’s not only a huge hulking creature and king/chief, but it’s facial features are somewhat the same (those little spikes + Stoick’s beard). Both also rule with kindness and respect instead of fear/manipulation like Drago and his bewilderbeast, and both are allies to Valka to the point where they would do anything to protect her. During the Bewilderbeast battle, when Valka tries to stop the two fighting, her one seems listen - it’s this that ultimately leads to his death, because he stopped for a moment to listen. Stoick was willing to do anything to protect Valka, both before she disappeared and after they refound each other; when Drago’s Bewilderbeast goes after her, Stoick immediately jumps and runs to protect her. It’s only when Drago has his dragon turn on their son, Hiccup, that Stoick immediately rushes to save him too - just as he tried to stop Valka from being carried off. The symbolism in this series is so powerful.

One thing I'm shocked you didn't talk about is Drago's Bewilderbeast. It's not just a villain, it's clearly been abused. When Stoick saves Hiccup it seems shocked about someone loving and showing affection and even seems regretful. Never notices until recently how interesting it is as a character

If I remember right we actually see drago’s bewilderbeast at the end of rtte so it was only in his possession for like a year. I always feel like that kinda made drago scarier as a villain since if he could fully control one of the most daunting species within a year, that just emphasised his power

@Cryptid Claws The egg at the end is most likely either the egg of Dragos Bewilderbeast that then becomes Hiccups moms friend or it’s the egg of some other bewilderbeast that then became the White one we see in HTTYD 2. I thought its coloring was a tad bit too light to be Dragos but I might be mistaken since it was some time ago since I saw it.

There's something CinemaWins forgot to mention that makes this movie (specially after Stoick's death) seem more heart wrenching: When the hand that is shown collecting arrows, it isn't Gobber since it had a right arm and leg, it's Snotlout. It may not seem that important until you remember his father's position next to Stoick as his Next-in-command, Snotlout assumes his father's position as his next to Hiccup when Stoick dies, showing full loyalty to him and making the funeral preparations for Stoick. It broke my heart when I heard it so I must share now :)

"You're as beautiful as the day I lost you." I swear to god, there is always one line in each HTTYD that hits me hard in some way. This one always seems to sucker punch me in the gut with a boxing glove filled with chopped onions. Also, this movie is the biggest and possibly sole reason why I want a viking funeral.

carlosfer2201 for me in the first one it’s all of Stoic’s speech when he thinks Hiccup is dead, mostly “I did this...” The third one had no emotion at all so I have none in it
Miasimon
Miasimon 2 yıl önce
@carlosfer2201 First movie: "Everything we know about you guys, is wrong." To me, that signaled the turning point for Hiccup. Before, it was mainly just Toothless. From that moment onward, he knew that *all* dragons were just misunderstood. Second movie: "You're as beautiful as the day I lost you." Just a beautiful quote from such a gruff, stubborn man of few words. Third movie: "There were dragons, when I was a boy." The quote that drove home that this was it. There would be no more HTTYD movies and the journey was over. Oh sure, you go in knowing that it's the final movie in the trilogy.. but that quote sets the word "final" in cold, hard stone.

Hiccup's parents reuniting is genuinely one of my favourite scenes... Ever, from ANY film, animated and live action. It is just SO powerful! Valka's growing panic that is completely destroyed in a single sentence, the look of complete and utter disbelief and wonder on stoik's face, the MUSIC...Just everything about it incredible!

Hiccup and Astrids romance has been around since the first one but they decided to confirm their relationship in the TV series (Dragons: Race to the Edge.) It definitely explained how all of a sudden they were dating, they definitely put effort in the HTTYD, respect to DreamWorks teams for the amount of effort they put in.

What I love about Hiccup and Astrid's romance is it's not the main point of the story. It's a side note to add personality to both characters, but not the focal. Astrid's not a princess who needs savings or needs to prove herself and Hiccup isn't the prince who is stubbornly pursuing her out of love. They really have a wholesome love and the fact that it's not the main point of the show is one of the many win's of this series.

@Kittycatkyla23 totally agree. Even though my favorite animated couple (Rapunzel and Flynn) is the best, I do like how with Hiccup's and Astrid's is how it's the main plot of the story. Sure, it doesn't show as much of course as a Disney movie but for what it does show it's perfect

Hiccstrid is how to write a romance done RIGHT: mutual respect, encouragement, and teasing. They’re opposite just enough to balance eachother out and enhance the other’s strengths/cover their weaknesses, but still share a similar core set of values (loyalty to friends/family, willingness to adapt) that binds them together. Plus, not being a main plotpoint and having your own life/getting along with the other’s lovedones for both partners will ALWAYS be a win And unlike the “gotta win them back!” gross trope most sequels do ‘cause “uh how do you wuv someone outside the chase...?” they’re just...solid. Their relationship grew, they’re completely comfortable with eachother and call eachother out on their crap. There’s no regression to rehashing a “chase” because what they built wasn’t dependent on sexual attraction and infatuation. Just...thank you OP for reminding me how much I adore this couple. Like, FINALLY a canonical couple to root for

One thing I really appreciate about 9:19 is that it’s a literal reference to the first movie and how much they’ve grown since then. With the first big dragon they defeated, it’s tail knocked Hiccup off of Toothless and ultimately caused him to loose his foot (leg?). Here, they successfully avoid the tail and win (and Toothless gains his alpha ability)

9:08 this "now or never" that hiccup said is actually about the first movie where he fights with the nest's alpha dragon (a.k.a. the red death) and Toothless and him fell on it's tail and hiccup lost his leg. So hiccup said now or never because they had to be saved and not let this happen again.

I appreciate how they didn't drag out the "best friends argue" trope when Hiccup is mad with grief and lashes out. they're such good friends that Toothless understands to give Hiccup space and Hiccup immediately regrets it and makes sure to prove himself again. a tired trope done well due to the deep understanding between them

Missed win: "For the Dancing and the Dreaming" is the same music as "Stoic's Ship." Stoic: "I thought I'd have to die before we danced that again." Valka: "No need for drastic measures." That just adds a whole new level of emotion. Also the scene where Stoic saves Hiccup, it used to bother me a little, but then I watched some behind the scenes and that's actually Dean Deblois favorite scene. No matter what frustrations Hiccup had with his father, they were nothing compared to Stoic's love for his son. "With love comes loss, son. Its part of the deal." Also, "There is no greater gift than love."

For me what I love about Hiccup is he's such a refreshing male protagonist. The story of nerdy boyfriend and butch girlfriend is as old as time, but the difference is Hiccup is actually WISE. Consistently, throughout the films he doesn't get Deus Ex Machina'd (except by Toothless but they're basically one unit so I don't feel that counts), he actually solves his problems with planning, tactics and his own skills. When he becomes the leader, it feels earned.

I know it may have been said, but I realized what Drago is doing when he screams and waves his staff around. It’s a threat display. When Hiccup and toothless fly, I can't help but smile. When there's a joke, I can't help but laugh And when there's sad moment, I can't help but cry. These movies are FREAKING perfect!

Did y'all know that Hiccups Mother was supposed to be the villain of this movie? They taught about making her even more crazy about dragons and she would even try to steal toothless from Hiccup because he blew off a part of his tail in the first movie. They of course realised that this would anger people and not make a good plot so they changed it.

one great thing i love in the scene where Stoick first reunites with Valka is that up until he is able to touch her, you can see that he's shock but also hoping it's real. like he lost her 20 years ago and didn't think he'd be able to see her again in this life. so as he gently places his hand on her cheek you can actually see the relief in his eyes as he realizes he's actually found her after all this time. it's also possibly why he doesn't say anything at all as he walk up to her. and while Gobber saw her as well should say she is present and there, imagine all the emotions rushing through Stoick's mind as he lays his eyes on his wife after 20 year thinking she was dead. if you were in that situation, do you think you'd be able to realize your significant other, who you thought dead for 20 years, was actually there and talking to you? from when he first saw her up until he touched her cheek he couldn't believe that the woman he loved, who he'd long since thought dead, was alive and standing right in front of him.

I'm also 100% convinced Toothless was just a young adolescent in the first movie. His design has changed so much since the first movie and he has noticeably grown alongside Hiccup, not to mention Valka says that he's Hiccup's age. I'm.. gonna assume Night Fury lifespans are probably pretty long so it would take them a long time to mature, just like humans. So Hiccup is 20 in this movie, and Toothless most likely is as well, give or take a few months or a year, but I imagine Valka probably would've elaborated if that were the case.. So I'm just gonna take it pretty literally. So.. First movie Toothless was an adorable, grouchy little teenager, and he has become more goofy and mellow in his adulthood, plus the added perk of safety among vikings making him be able to adopt a more relaxed attitude (when not having to protecc his rider ofc). Absolutely adorable.

Ir's also an incendiary gas weapon, so it's techically got more uses than a lightsaber.

@Kai Creech It does, indeed. Though i'm sure that with some tweaking you can use a lightsaber like a handgrenade >.>

I think the part that really sells the reunion scene, is Stoics one line. It's short, but what he says and the way he says it, just gets the tears flowing. Because it sounds like a man who just witnessed the impossible, and that all he wants, all he cares about now, is have her by side once again. Soooooo, fricking good!

I was always wondering how much I loved this movie, and I think it's because of the attention to details. From the tiny details in the background, the facial expressions, the scores, the characters, the animation, redemption archs, character developments, And of course, the plot. This movie is just *chefs kiss*

Extra points for the fact that there were two whole series between he two movies and they don’t ignore everything that happened in them while still making it so viewers who didn’t see it didn’t need any catching up or feel like they were missing any information!

The entire section at 8:00 is exactly why I think this movie is so good. Unlike some movies where a scene similar to this would seem farfetched and stupid, it actually makes sense in the context of the film, and so it works. Not to mention that that dread it makes so you feel is honestly so real, and it makes this scene 100% times better.

I've only seen these two movies in bit and pieces, but for me what a stood out the most was stoic's transformation. Across the films we witness him go from verbally disowning hiccup as his son to sacrificing his life for hiccup with no hesitation. It reminded me of how even though my dad and I frequently butted heads he was always there when I needed him.

A win for me is Stoick's entire process of saving Hiccup. He has come so far that as he running to Hiccup and Toothless, fully aware what Toothless is about to do, he does not consider hurting Toothless. His objective to get BETWEEN them and ultimately his sacrifice protects them BOTH. It would be so easy to throw his axe at Toothless, the Stoick from the first movie likely would have, but not here. It never crosses his mind to hurt Toothless. To top it off, too, when Toothless comes back to himself and sees Stoick lifeless and everyone mourning he doesn't go to Hiccup, he first instinct is to go to STOICK and try to rouse him by nuzzling his hand, AND when Hiccup yells at him Toothless actually looks at Stoick AGAIN before running off, which speaks of a bond between them and how far Stoick has come that in that moment Toothless does not focus solely on Hiccup but much of his attention is on Stoick as well.

Another win with Eret’s character. I think he’s the only one of Hiccup’s antagonist who doesn’t mock Hiccup for his leg and he finds himself standing up to Drago at the end despite being afraid of him before and even participates in honoring Stoick.

I grew up watching these trilogy, and.... this is amazing. I NEED TO rewatch them. Also this is my favourite movie out of the trilogy, and Toothless and Hiccup flying at the start of the movie is probably one of the best and my favourite flight scenes EVER. Everytime I hear Jonsi's music I get chills.

Hiccup is like Peter Parker. He doesn’t get to be happy for long periods of time. He finally gets both his parents back here, a chance for everything he ever wanted, but then it’s all taken from him in a matter of minutes. But he continues to do what he knows is right, what he has to do, because that’s his job. Hiccup is always being shit on, just like Peter. And that’s what makes him so interesting. He has an amazing character with flaws that make sense for a character like him. Sure, he always gets it done, but he’s been shit on for most of his life.

I'd like to point out, the two alpha dragons are kind of symbolic in their own ways. Valka's alpha's horns are more angled down, and less threatening, whereas Drago's alpha has it's horns more angled upwards, it's much more menacing in a way.

So one of my favorite things from this movie was something you didnt touch on which surprised me was almost like a role reversal. In the first movie Hiccup struggled to prove to the Vikings that he was good enough to be one of them. In this one Stoick tries to prove that Hiccup is good enough to be Chief a concept Hiccup struggles with before ultimately being forced to take up the role.

So I'm really happy I found this video. The movie is part of the reason I decided to learn to fly, and I wanted to do it on as much of a budget as I safely could, and found out about paramotors. After flying for almost a year, and knowing pilots who've been flying for MUCH longer, I can safely say getting above the clouds is always truly stunning, and I don't think I will ever get used to it, as pilots who've been flying for close to 20 years still aren't used to it...

When I first saw this film, I was 10 or 11. I was not used to seeing character deaths. I legitimately thought Stoick would get back up and say “I told you a little fire can’t stop me.” When he didn’t, it took me more than a little aback. I didn’t know how to process it and I cried during the funeral scene.

Another thing he missed is the fact that, when Drago's prosthesis gets blasted off, you can clearly see from a shot of an armored dragon before hand that it was one of *his* original charges that blasts it off of him. Oh, the irony! The dragon you used to control with fear, now controls *you* with fear! Certainly a "win" in my book. Such attention to detail!
