Coco is at the very least one of the prettiest animations I've seen in quite a while. Makes me want to go get a 4K TV. But it also somehow manages to pull a tear or two out of me each time I watch it. SOMETIMES three. Here's everything right with Coco! Next week the complete opposite of Coco.

I also love the fact that your spirit guide is in relation to your personality. Imeldas is this big strong cat, because she was super strong for her family once her husband disappeared (died) and De La Cruz's are just some very clumsy and weak Chihuahuas which reflects his weak personality. Miguels is Dante, because he is a loyal, friendly character, with great bonds to his family and animals.

"You're not so bad yourself Gordito" - He's calling him chubby. It's a term of endearment in some places; but in this case he's probably referencing the fact that he actually has a body. Which compared to Hector and everyone else who are skeletons, would definitely qualify as chubby!

Another win for this- Dementia in its later stages are when most memories are the hardest to recover. But, doctors have reports of their patients humming their favorite song, or melody. The fact that Miguel playing the song "Remember Me" was the key to help her recover her memories was an amazing connection to me. But, it could just be a coincidence. Who knows?
imjustelm
imjustelm 2 aylar önce
nope, this is true! there was a documentary I watched for one of my music classes where the families of patients in a nursing home compiled playlists of music their elder listened to with the help of some researchers, and compared the memory, behavior, and overall functioning of the patients from before they were reunited with the music and after. drastic memory improvements were made, patients were more responsive and social, and other positive effects were displayed (it's been a few years, I don't quite remember the details anymore). I think it was called Alive Inside, and it dealt with Alzheimer's patients, if I recall correctly, so not quite the same, but still impressive!

There actually is a form of Alzheimer's/dementia therapy called music therapy the strongest connections the brain makes are the emotional and music can help temporarily strengthen these pathways this playing music from their youth can help them temporarily regain some level of memory specifically how they feel about the song and strong emotionally charged memories surrounding the song

Also there's the matter of "sundowning" which is when people with degenerative memories become more confused/combative later in the day. Since Miguel is singing to her first thing in the morning Mama Coco would (in theory) be at her most present/aware. That's why she not only remembers her Papa but she remembers/recognizes her daughter Elena. ANd yes music has been pretty consistantly shown to invoke memories

Honestly, one of my favorite moments was when Hector went to the Departure Agent again at the end of the movie. We saw that he made her job difficult, I’m pretty sure he caused her extra paperwork when he tried to run by, and it was well established that what we saw wasn’t his first attempt. She gave him a slight look, but she still checked to see if his picture was on an ofrenda, and when she saw that it was, she sounded genuinely happy for Hector in that he got to cross into the Land of the Living.

One thing I really loved about this movie is how well it showed how different the exact same song can feel depending on the context. De La Cruz's Remember Me is all about the immortality gained through being famous, while Hector's original version is a beautiful simple ballad to his daughter as a way to reassure her on the fact that he'll never leave her forever.

The reason there's so much attention to details for the land of the living is because the core Pixar team visited a Mexican town during Dio de Los Muertos and a family of cobblers. They took thousands of photos and hundreds of sketches to capture details for references, it's that kind of dedication that adds to the beauty that is Coco.

The thing that breaks my heart (but in a good way) is when Coco finally remembers her father and regains her lucidity, the first thing she does is ask why her daughter is crying. The Rivera’s are *all* about family, even barely cognisant Coco spent her lucid moments making sure her daughter was alright.

I love how De La Cruz’s spirit animal/guid is a chihuahua, the most selfish and mean of dog breeds.
GayJayy
GayJayy Aylar önce
The "most selfish and mean" could be said for any dog breed. It ultimately comes down to owners knowing how to train and take care of them on whether they're mean and selfish or not.
Mono
Mono Aylar önce
@Giant Pink Cat A lot of people don’t realize this, but when you get a dog, you absolutely NEED to train them. And with Chihuahuas being such popular breeds, they commonly come from irresponsible breeders and into the hands of irresponsible owners, neither of which give such training and eventually the aggression becomes apart of the dog’s DNA.

Giant Pink Cat

From what I've heard, one of the reasons many Chihuahuas are so mean to humans is because their owners abuse them and treat them more like cosmetics and purses rather than man's best friend. So they have little trust in humans from that.

Another thing that should be mentioned is that the amount of “ofrendas” that poeple recieve equals their status in the after world. De la Cruz has so many people putting up “altares” for him he even has stuff stuff to spare, meanwhile Hector and Cheech have no ofrendas because their family doesn’t remember them, causing them to live in poverty while De la Cruz lives in luxury along with the other famous Mexicans like El Santo, Pedro Infante, etc.

Coco is actually one of the best movies I've ever seen. It has so many small details, and so much love, dedication, and time put into it. It really shows just how much the people who made it cared.
Depresso Espresso
The thing I love the most is the defining difference between Hector and his family and Ernesto. Take Imelda’s performance of La Llorona Notice how Imelda is clearly singing from the heart, she *is* the weeping woman in this song, Hector’s ‘war’ being his inevitable murder at Ernesto’s hand. Ernesto sings from the lungs but not the heart, his singing is a little too upbeat and even for a song like La Llorona. He is singing like a professional who only cares about the performance. He doesn’t care about the soul of the song, he never did. He cared about fame and glory.

Like everyone else, I bawled at the scene where Miguel sings to Grandma Coco... but the part that really took my breath away was when Coco sees her daughter and says "'Lena?" Then asks her why she's crying, or what's wrong. That was such a great way to show how strongly her memory had returned, she not only remembered her Papa, but the rest of her family too. Also, I feel I have to add, I don't think Moana did choose her quest "over" her family. I think she chose it FOR them. If she went home, there was no way of knowing if anyone else would restore Te Fiti, and her island was dying without her. She continued on her quest to save her family, her home, her people, and her island. At least, that's how I see it.

Missed win; the short scene at the end when Hector gets let through to visit the living world. The attendant raising an "eyebrow" when he shows up without tricks or disguises ('cause lets be honest, the one we saw was _not_ the first time he tried a disguise) and Hector just smiles very awkwardly with his straw-hat in his hands in a very humble way and how the attendant gives a genuine, heartfelt smile when letting him through and the sheer relief on Hector's face. It all lasts like, 10 seconds, but it gets to me every time.

Another fun fact about names: The name Hector means "hold fast." Héctor is a very resolute character who clings to that last thread of hope with all his might, never giving up on the notion of seeing his daughter again, or at least knowing his descendants will be alright. Even at the very end, he's not quite ready to let go. Not until Miguel is alive and safe. Héctor's name was very well chosen.

Personally I noticed a few as well: •Ernesto has f’s on his chin which in music mean forte or loud and he is literally and figuratively loud. Figuratively especially because of his obnoxious and selfish way of singing remember me while Hector’s was soft and comforting •Frida actually using the tunes Miguel came up with when opening the show •The insane amount of detail on everything -Hector’s bones being more worn down in color and texture then Miguel’s I’ll add to the list if if remember any more, but you guys had mostly the same observations I did! Something funny about Hector is how you can notice throughout the movie how he acts sort of like a father to Miguel. Like when they were down in the cave and Hector was comforting him, or how Hector was reassuring him before he sang Un Poco Loco. It was Hector's fatherly instincts showing. I noticed it the first time I watched Coco back when it first came out, but never really thought about it till the end of the movie when it was revealed Hector was Coco's father. Nice details!

I love that her lullaby brought Coco back. It reminds me of when I was in high school and we showed my piano to my grandma on my father’s side. No one told me she used to be in theater and that she could play. I was shocked when she sat down and immediately touched the keys. She didn’t play anything, but I could tell her fingers were comfortable on the keys and that she missed playing. It was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. When she passed, she left me all her old hat pins, her fox stole, and anything else she thought I could use for costuming. It always reminds me that someone else in the family was an actress and a musician too.

Something I love is how throughout the movie Dante is guiding Miguel to Hector. When Miguel is running away from his Family, he follows Dante into the area where Hector is being processed by the cop. When he is abandoning Hector after the contest, Dante tries to get Miguel to go back to him, tugging on his jacket. All this culminates in the reveal that yes, Dante was a Spirit Guide, guiding Miguel to the person he SHOULD be searching for, instead of the fake idol is trying to get to.

I study immigrant family separation and thinking about the bridge between the land of the living and the land of the dead as the literal border (like they kind of do in the movie with CBP) really gets the waterworks going for Hector every time. It's a really well done analogy that I think captures another dimension that a lot of Mexican American families can relate to.

Another win is that villain's spirit animals are tiny dogs as he have no real connections. While Miguel's family spirit beast is a giant powercat fed by family values.

@Voltaic Fire For one, he's a Xoloitzcuintli (or Xolo for short as Frida acknowledges), which is an iconic, hairless dog breed famous in Mexico. In Aztec mythology, Xolo dogs were sacred creatures who could move between the lands of the living _and_ the dead. So it makes sense that this seemingly-silly pup is really Miguel's protector. Additionally, Dante's name could very well be a nod to Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Dante penned the famous Divine Comedy, which includes the Inferno. In the Inferno, Dante journeys through Hell, the underworld in Christian theology. That one seems a little stretch, I know, but religion is very crucial to Latins.

Chihuahuas are primarily show dogs, no one gets them because they’re sweet because they’re just not. They’re bred as a status symbol. Cats especially large ones are not, they’re strong hunters with a strong will but lions and such actually do have strong pack mentality. It also shows the matriarchal power of Miguel’s family, lionesses are the ones to do the hunting they’re fierce. Chihuahuas are cowardly, they aren’t hunters or such but they do have a mean bite when they feel threatened. He wants to feel big and important but he’s just a cowardly small dog Who relies on others admiration to survive when it comes down to it. (Chihuahuas are a biological nightmare as well)

One of my favorite parts: When Miguel is talking to Skeleton Frida Kahlo, the brass band in the background laughs at some of the things Miguel says. The trombonist laughs into his instrument, and that cracks me up (as a trombone player myself.)

one of my favorite wins was the progression of the "blessings". the first few were constrictive, unfair and controlling with the no music stipulation. Near the end it becomes "Never forget how much your family loves you" which seems very sweet and shows that Imelda has learned something but then the blessing that they are able to actually give was with "no conditions" which is really the most genuine form of love. They love him, regardless.

Cool thing about that part of this movie that makes everyone cry: it really happens. Music from someone's childhood or adolescence can actually be used to treat or at least temporarily relieve the effects of dementia. And they're eyes light up exactly like Mama Coco's. It's beautiful to witness.

The scene of Coco singing with Miguel hits me specially hard. My grandfather suffered from Alzehimer, just like Coco. It's a degenerative illness, that makes people forget everything in their lives, and slowly fada away. The worst day of my life was when he no longer could recognize me. Sometimes, through songs, some of that like came back, and that's why i feel so strongly that part.

When he counted the Spanish words I thought about how I always call my boyfriend "mi amor". He told me that he told his family about it and well his dad looked up what it meant. Together they searched up all the Spanish words I have ever written to him and they were in awe about the translations. He even apologised for not having looked them up sooner. And I quote "I didn't know you were so romantic. I never thought you are telling me all these sweet things in a different language." I told him I have only written them in Spanish because I knew he wouldn't look it up and therefore not understand. The things I have written were embarrassing to me and I was anxious about them. Now he's trying to learn Spanish. xD Edit: noticing how many people are touched by this I just wanted to say that we are now almost 2 years together and we still love each other dearly. He's Spanish is still terrible though.

So I wish he had spent longer on the llorona song, bc (and my Spanish is a little rough) but basically mama imelda sings to hector "I will never stop loving you" but then when ernesto cuts in, he sings that line to the crowd. Really subtle but important animation work that you wouldn't realize unless you knew the translation.

@pianoguy222 Nope, sorry. His state was affected only by Coco's memory of him. She was the only one still alive that knew him when he was alive, that knew anything about him at all. That's why in the end we see Hector close to "dying" and Miguel ran to Coco to make her remember him. Which showed the rest of the family had no impact o Hector on the other side. They didn't count. His bad appearance was related to the deterioration of Coco's memory.

My favorite part of the movie is one little hint that Hector is a Rivera. The Riveras have a family quirk of adding extra -itos to words to express love. Like Abuela will call him “Miguelititito”. Then later, at the end of Un Poco Loco, they sing “un pocitititito loco.” No other characters outside the Riveras do this, hinting that De La Cruz didn’t write that song.

This also a great movie with a Spanish "dub". Since a large number of the voice actors are bilingual, they recorded the English and Spanish versions. Given the setting of the movie it's a fantastic option to have.

Have you listened to these songs in Spanish You can tell they worked so hard and they all fit and have the same meanings. I mean I love them in both languages Also missed win: You can hear Hector strain slightly for the high note in Remember me not much but just a little to keep it in his Mixed voice instead of his head and then when Miguel sang it he strained less because his voice is higher and less matured. Just a win from your local theater kid

Something I noticed- you mentioned that Miguel’s parents are both alive. I realized if one one them were dead, they would have to make that the center of the story, since the entire movie is about him and his deceased ancestors. If they made it about Miguel and his mother/father, not only would it distract the theme of grandma Coco and her father, but the plot twist of her father and the center of the story of acceptance. It’s crazy how that minor detail would have made a huge impact

this movie means so much to me. i’m from mexico but i was actually adopted, so i unfortunately don’t know a lot about my own culture and people. seeing this kind of movie makes my heart happy, because even though it’s animated and fiction, i’m still able to experience what it would’ve been like for me if i wasn’t adopted. like being around family, celebrating these kind of holidays together and remembering loved ones.

Watching this, I realized something absolutely heartbreaking. Miguel was willing to sacrifice music but he needed music to go back and remind Coco. If he was sent back when he first offered to genuinely sacrifice music, there is no guarantee he would be able to get Coco to remember Hector. Trying to play to remind her would just immediately send him back, either wasting valuable time or permanently trapping him. Like it or not, how it went down was likely one of the best ways it could have gone down.

Neat little detail i'd like to point out is that when Miguel was put on the spot to try to make music, he actually did with success! He managed to make a wonderful and fitting rise of music to match the tone of the play. And there's the fact that Hector was the composer for what De La Cruz would be known as. A small hint/detail strengthening their family relations.

I volunteered (still do) to be a nurse with people with alzheimer and light/heavy dementia, so every scene mama Coco was in had me in near tears. EDIT : Dementia is not funny at all, but yeah, sometyimes you have to laugh at silly moments, otherwise it's always "dark" and sad to do i'm afraid. Also sad fact is : After all that trouble, Hector is still gonna vanish very soon in land of the dead because Coco died due old age.

When it came to Coco remembering her family I wasn't crying, I got chokey, but I knew (as it was a Disney film) that that's what was gonna happen, what I wasn't ready for was Hector dueting with Miguel at the end, that had me in tears, and just seeing it happen in your video had me crying again, I can't put into words the emotion this film has that just seeing visuals of it make me cry. Absolutely beautiful.

Another win: La llorona is a song that has been played a lot especially during dia de muertos (day of the dead). It's a folk song about the weeping woman, I'm happy seeing that they created an upbeat version of it to fit the joyous colorful theme. Also when we see the bridge of cempasuchil (marigold petals) you see that they had the aztec pyramids as the "platform" to the land of the dead, just thought it was pretty cool!
