@Summer Rose They definitely knew, but when you’re marketing to kids, the Zeus=God, Hades=Satan comparisons are easier for the intended audience to understand than the actual Greek myths. Most adults today would struggle with the “king of the gods” being a pretty scummy dude, yet still treated with deference by gods and men alike, while the god of the underworld being a dour, but ultimately good guy.

There was always a Chorus in every Greek play. Here they turned it into a Gospel Choir. Best exposition form ever! They showed the Labors of Hercules in the montage. In Lion King, Zazu told Mufasa that Scar would make a great throw rug. So they basically turned him into one here.

I wish there were more films about Greek (/ Norse/ Egyptian) Mythology like this bcos it's fascinating, and there's so much to work with, i.e. - the Gods & their powers - the environments/ locations and visuals - the stories - the monsters - the mythical creatures, etc

What has never occurred to me until right this moment after approximately 90 viewings in my 28 years of life... Why is Meg not a true hero? She gave her soul to save another and gave her life to save Hercules. She only did what she did (which was speak to the Herc because she was enslaved by "Hades." This story is so far away from the actual mythology, that they could have made her a minor Goddess just cuz. First off his name is Hercules, that's Roman. It's Heracles. Second he was born a demigod, Zeus and a mortal woman So Hera isn't his mother, and he was only named after her as an apology from Zeus, she still hated him and tried to kill him. Next Heracles does eventually become a God after his 7 labors. Hades is not the Christian Devil The Underworld isn't hell. And obviously the southern African American Gospel music.... is pure delight, but obviously not related to Greek culture. So if all that can be wrong... Why can't Meg be a heroic Goddess? But in the end, instead of saying, Hey y'all need to make this girl a hero to because she is brave, she saved my life and she sacrifices herself for the good of others. Also this movie makes me appreciate how much a series like Percy Jackson could reference the myths and keep enough of the facts in there while also blending in the fiction.

@jariah92005 Look, I know the Greek versions are different from each other, I've read enough of them to know. Some versions he's raised a prince, others by farmers. Some versions he was only supposed to do ten labors and two got disqualified, other versions he was always meant to do twelve. Some versions he killed his teacher, others he didn't. But there are enough similarities that one can compare what generally happens in the Greek myths to what happens in modern interpretations, like the Disney movie. In many, but not all, Greek versions he was poisoned by his wife and jumped into flames and died. After that he ascended to Olympus and became a god. In the Disney version, he turns down Olympus so he could stay on Earth with Meg. (Personally, I prefer Disney's ending) So, what was wrong with that? Here's what typically happened in Greek stories, here's how the Disney movie is different. The only person turning this into an argument is you. Perhaps I am an idiot for continuing to respond, but it appears I've let my pride get the better of me. In any event, I feel there's nothing here to prove. We all know the Disney Renaissance movie is different from a bunch of Greek stories passed on through oral tradition thousands of years ago. I've established I think it's okay to talk and even joke about those differences without being critical of them or the stories as a whole. It would appear you do not agree, which is fine. I simply ask that you allow others to do as they please as long as they're not hurting or harassing anyone.

“people are just playfully jabbing at how far off the movie is from the myth.” That statement insinuates the myth you’ve heard is the only real, legitimate story of Hercules. You also agreed with another commenter about the morality of a character that was painted darker in the movie that what you’ve learned. If you enjoyed the movie then why waste air entertaining the idea that you’re particular interpretation of the myth is the only valid interpretation out there, its like you’re saying “it’s a cute movie for a pack of lies”. Its ridiculous . Again, we are talking about myths. Stories brought down from literally generations of people by word of mouth before being written down by different people. We are NOT talking about published works we can go back to and study for inaccuracies in different film versions.🙄. Dickens and Rick Riordan works are something we can ACTUALLY see in their original forms and legitimately use as a base for film adaptation criticism. Again, not the same at all. Riordans work only uses Greek mythology as a base to tell his original story. Not the same. And YOU brought up his work, not me. His books have nothing to do with this conversation and I haven’t commented on how I feel about them at any time. You’re trying to use them to back up your argument and it doesn’t work. They’re not myths and they’re not part of classic literature. You’re desperately reaching. As for Dickens. Please just stop. You’re not doing yourself any favors. A Christmas Carol isn’t a myth passed down orally for generations . Its a published novel you could have always bought in its original form to this day. Smh. No one’s talking about that work. It’s not comparable in any way. The filmed adaptations of his classic story are pretty clearly interpretations and can be criticized as such because the original text can actually be studied. Again, not the same. You keep wanting to treat Greek mythology as something we can see in an original written form. We can’t. These myths were orally shared over generations before being written down in various forms. Homer used Heracles in three different allegorical ways, two of which being Homers Illiad and Odyssey. Homer HIMSELF changed the narrative of his version to tell his story , showing that the interpretation of Greek mythological characters can be based on different stories and legends from all over the country. So all you’ve done by bringing him up is prove that any interpretation of these stories is valid. Of course you also know that the story of Herc changed with the times, right? The medieval Herc was quite different from Renaissance Herc. Btw, that is surely the Herc you’ve read about as you’ve stated you were a student of Latin and Medieval Greek mythology was all written in Latin. The original Greek texts that existed weren’t even used for reference. Very interesting. So, basically, the myths that were finally written down by the people that originated them were not used in Medieval times to bring the stories to new generations. So already there were many “new” versions surely influenced by Christianity, politics and war. I digress. Anyway, the bottom line is you tried to demean Disney’s work for not being “accurate” when NO interpretations can be deemed “accurate”. There have, and always will be, different versions of these classic Greek myths. Criticize the film all you want but to call out historical inaccuracies is redundant. There’s no way to fact check mythology. 🤷🏽‍♂️

@jariah92005 My point with the Percy Jackson thing, was that I didn’t need something to be similar to the original story to enjoy it. It’s a story about a bunch of teenagers at a magic summer camp dealing with the Greek gods, for crying out loud! I know Olympus wasn’t on the 600th floor of the Empire State Building in the Ancient Greek stories. I don’t care. They’re great books. You’re being a little hypocritical by making a big deal about them being different from mythology because you’re complaining about me doing the same thing. Second, I never used the word “real”. I even went back and checked my comments. You must’ve seen some else and mistook them for me. One of my favorite books, possibly my favorite, is Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. As we all know, the Muppet version is the best adaptation. If I were to say “In the book there was only one Marley” does that mean I’m bashing the movie for having Marley and Marley? No, I’m not saying one is better than the other, merely pointing out a difference between them. It’s the same thing with comparing Hercules to Homer’s version.
jariah92005
jariah92005 Yıl önce
@Hunter Lawrence Id say calling the interpretation you’re familiar with the “real” mythology is a bash. You basically just said Disney’s has no credence to be called mythology. Implying it’s not legitimate because it doesn’t follow what you’re familiar with. And, of course you realize that Percy Jackson isnt a mythological character at all, right? He isn’t based on any actual myth, HE’S the original creation where the Greek Gods are the actual mythic creatures. I mean, yeah, he was NAMED after Perseus but thats not supposed to BE him. He’s actually based on the authors son. 🤷🏽‍♂️. So. I mean, not the same at all. You not pointing that out or making that distinction kind of has me doubting that you have any idea what you’re talking about.
Hunter Lawrence
Hunter Lawrence Yıl önce
@jariah92005 One, I never bashed it. I think you have me confused with someone else. I was defending it, but also saying that talking about the differences between interpretations doesn't necessarily mean someone is bashing one or the other. I grew up loving this movie, and still do. It was my introduction to mythology. Later in my childhood I discovered Percy Jackson and watched many myth videos on the internet. Then, of course, we had to read multiple versions of this myth in middle school. Throughout high school I was an accomplished Latin student and involved in many classics related activities. I admit I am no expert but I believe I'm justified in claiming to know a little about what I'm talking about. And again, all of us classics nerds loved this movie, I don't know how you got the idea I didn't.

Jack Nicholson was originally set to play Hades, but due to his schedule and the studio unwilling to share merchandising purchases with the actor, ended up turning it down. But someone, recommended James Woods due to his ability to ad-lib his dialogue in films. And when they brought Woods in, boy did he improv a lot. Most of what you hear in his Hades role, was improvised, giving Hades the sleazy businessman vibe.

Please, there isn’t A species of Pegasi. THERE IS ONE FLYING HORSE THAT IS CALLED PEGASUS. It’s something the movie got right. I’m sorry I’m obsessed with Greek mythology.

It's a DISNEY MOVE, don't expect it to be exactly like the original Greek stories.

My favorite disney movie is Beauty and the beast! Ive watched it since I was a toddler and ive always been in love with the love story and the message. Hercules is definitely in the top 5 for me though lol. Its super creative and hilarious, and since im a huge fan of greek mythology, all the little easter eggs they threw in make it so entertaining.

The fact that the whole story revolves around the concepts of fate and destiny makes the repeating joke of "if.. if is good" that much funnier to me (:

Hades gets so misrepresented in modern media. Out of the big three (Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. And that's in order from oldest to youngest), Hades was probably the most chill, second only to Hestia. Hades was faithful to his wife, loved his dog (which by the way, Cerberos roughly translates as "the spotted one", so Hades has a dog named Spot basically) and dig his job ruling over the afterlife.

Have you seen "Gargoyles"? It's a show, but the first episode/movie can be a stand-alone. Pretty good story!

I love Hercules although it’s actually pronounced Herakles but I’ll let it slide since this did come out in the 90s.

Heracles is his Greek name, (named after Hera in a failed attempt to calm her wrath), Hercules is his Roman name. Oddly enough this movie uses all Greek names except for the main character.

there's no Hercules sequel, but there is a TV series, it's sort of a "Herc goes to school while still in hero training" thing and ofc the animation is only TV show quality, but it's a fun watch, explores more Greek Mythology aspects within the Disney Hercules world (for example, Herc's best friends at school are Icarus and Cassandra), ofc it also has more Hades (they retcon the fact that Hades only finds out about Herc after his training is complete) along with other mythical monsters and stuff They even did a crossover episode with Disney's Aladdin called Hercules and the Arabian Night, a must watch just for the Jafar & Hades interaction XD (should have seen all three Aladdin movies before though)

Fun fact: The greek version of Hercules is ACTUALLY Heracles! Hercules is the Roman name. Zeus named him Heracles in honor of Hera, who actually loathed him. Hercules is obviously the more memorable name and easier to say so that's what most go with, and that's what disney decided to go with.
Maymoney In Da' Building
You should definitely do Hunchback of Notre Dame! Amazing movie
