Beats, Rhymes and Life is my favorite Tribe album (Edit: Can't say it's my fave after a proper dive - which is how I found this vid - but it was my favorite for a long time). It's the storytelling. That fatigue you mention... What I hear is a group of MCs spending a long summer doing the rounds of the NYC party scene while all hell is jumping off around them. Sonically, Midnight Marauders is a spring album. Beats is September dog days when you're ready for summer to be done but it's still 95 degrees out. It's a similar feeling to Do the Right Thing in film. The Love Movement is hotter than you give it credit for too imo - as long as you have cans or speakers that can handle the bass programming or you'll just hear snares for 40 mins lol.

My uncle was very broken up over Phife's death. Back when his main gig was DJing in the Bay Area in the late 90's early 00s he did some work in radio and got to interview Phife in 2003. He's really glad he got to have that personal interaction with him.

You should do a De La Soul deep dive. You'll probably have to resort to TRvid for most of the albums given their label (and sample clearance) situations making a majority of their stuff unavailable on streaming save for their most recent two. But De La definitely needs more support and praise. Real scummy how Tommy Boy's been doing them with regards to giving them control of their material.

PLEASE do De La. It's a shame they get looked over due to the lack of availability on streaming (hopefully we'll get it soon since the group announced they're working on it last summer), they were (and still are) held in the same esteem as Tribe back then!

@MrBock I remember that for sure, I had opted in to receive the email with the discography. They did that because even back then they were still having the issues they're currently having with getting their back catalog officially released, so just out of love for the fans and because they're awesome dudes, they said fuck it have it all for free (though technically it was all their albums from 3 Feet High to Stakes Is High plus a greatest hits compilation. The Grind Date wasn't included). I wish I had donated to the kickstarter for "And the Anonymous Nobody", though.

Remember being at Barnes of noble (out of all places) looking at all the cds when I was 9 years old. The low end theory caught my eye and a convinced my mom to get it for me. Listen to that cd every day for a long and saved up all my money to get midnight marauders. Those two albums defined my childhood in a nutshell and tribe will always hit different for me. Thay shit was something special

@MrThemexacutioner Low End as well ! Discovered them in my late teens/early twenties a few years after they broke up (thank you eMule and Shareaza lol) and the first album I listened to completely (the first i could find at the time) was Midnight Marauders and it was my favorite for many years, but that slightly but surely drifted toward their sooner work and especially that second one. And Midnight is a great continuation and a way of perfecting the sound made on Low End, while still finding a way to give it its own identity, made me realize how much they cared. It shows how its a generation thing, and I wont be mad if a kid today tells me their last is their best, it's all about how and when you meet them. Because they always did their thing in the best way they could by staying true to what they loved in music, regardless of or by transcending their issues, differencies, or in the last case a dramatic loss. RIP Phife 🙏🏾❤️
MrThemexacutioner
It’s crazy after all these years to hear younger people (presumably) debate ATCQ. I never thought of Midnight as their best album. It’s interesting to see how this album aged. Btw, I’m old. I bought every Tribe album the day they were released starting with Instinctive. For me, Low End greatest album with Instinctive being my fav.

I love all of their albums and have been listening to all of the albums this past week. A Tribe Called Quest are my top 10 favorite rappers of all time. They don’t get enough credit for their music and they have the most unique sound. They are known for their jazz style sampled beats. I knew Phife Dawg had diabetes since his younger days, so he had died from complications of that disease. It broke my heart when he died, so the group minus Ali Shaheed Muhammad made a comeback album We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service. The group brought back original member Jacobi White who left the group during their debut album for culinary school. Also, it was their best comeback album I ever heard, so Ali Shaheed Muhammad wasn’t on the writing credits. It had a lot of collaborations on the album from André 3000, Kendrick Lamar, Jack White, Elton John, Kanye West, Anderson .Paak, Talib Kweli, Consequence, and Busta Rhymes. After hearing of all of their albums, Busta Rhymes was on all of their albums. The group has reunited 3 times after their 1998 breakup. Q-Tip and Phife didn’t always get along with each other since the two became lifelong friends. I advice people to listen to their music if you haven’t heard it yet. These guys were in their prime and made great music for all generations. I hope Q-Tip will make more music since the record labels don’t wanna promote him. It’s a dirty game in the music business. I would have wish they made a collaboration album with OutKast; that would be dope.

I was first introduced to Tribe's music in 1999, and it was The Love Movement. I listened to it repeatedly. That was the soundtrack of my summer 1999. THEN I went back to PIT&TPR, Midnight Marauders, Low End Theory. I didn't listen to Beats, Rhymes & Life until years later. The Love Movement is very underrated, but it holds a special place for me because of being 14, having a big crush on a girl, and feeling the summer vibes.

Quest dissed MC Hammer on Check the Rhime, years before Beats, Rhymes, and Life. MC Hammer fired back in 1994, and then I think that might be the inspiration for "Phony Rappers"
MrThemexacutioner
@Isaac Prin It depends on how much liberty you take with the “truth”. Lol. They talked it out with him so he was aware they did not mean it that way but he dissed them later anyway even though they had an understanding.

@MrThemexacutioner So, regardless of what was meant, Hammer still took offense to it and dissed them.

Popular misconception. ATCQ did not dis hammer. It was a misunderstanding with a lyric on Check The Rhyme that was talked about by both parties where Tip explained to Hammer it was NOT directed at him. Hammer, being on his own sack at the time decided to dis them later.

I went travelling over the summer and listened to a lot of Tribe. My last stop was Vienna and I ended up finding a 1990s print of Midnight Marauders for a steal of a price (26 euro, Discogs listen it near 70 atm). Still puts me in a good mood when I need it.

Please do De La Soul, Gang Starr, or The Roots next! All of them are some of the greatest discographies in hip hop and all have great history and stories surrounding them.

Great video. I listen to Midnight Mauraders on a weekly basis because it's that damn good.

Love this! Now hooked on the whole series. But we do need a DDD on The Beastie Boys, I think most would be surprised on how eclectic it gets.

Tribe has a special place in my heart. As someone who is loving the new school, they hooked me in to getting to know the history and culture of hiphop and my new found love for the old school. Absolute Legends.

Great video as always! I'd love to see you do a video on Electric Light Orchestra. Everyone knows them from Mr. Blue Sky but they have an insanely solid discography

This album was the first rap I had ever listened to and is what got me into hiphop. The entire album from beginning to end is timeless and ages well, getting better each and every time u hear it. One of the best, and not one single cuss word spoken! Verses from the abstract, man the whole song list DOPE.

So very well done! Their last album is my favorite, I listened to it everyday for a year and I’m a jazz musician 🎷!! I have no clue how to tribe called quest is not mentioned in everyone’s top five hip-hop of all time

People's Instinctive Travels is still my favourite Tribe album. It's one of a very select few that I can go back to and cheer me up whatever my mood is.

My favorite group of all time, I've listened to every main album, and even a lot of the more hidden gems, every album is amazing, even the ones other people don't like as much. Good vid!

Really hope there's a deep discog dive for the Mountain Goats someday! They're already on the poll but I can't imagine they're getting enough votes to win anytime soon 😅

I understand that you might not like "The Love Movement" as much as some of the classics. But I love that album more than midnight marauders purely cause my boy J Dilla kills everything.

I grew up with Quest, and to hear someone else talk about We Got It From Here and feel the same way I feel about it means so much.

I listen to a lot of genres of music, A Tribe Called Quest would be easily in my top 10 artists and Low End Theory in my top 10 albums with Midnight Marauders not far behind.
