@Scorch Congratulations to Morocco! They deserve this! Spain really was disappointing in attack & on offense, but that had to do a lot with the Moroccan defense. In any event, Morocco makes history as, I believe the first Arab/MENA country to make it to the quarters.
@Crokka Doodledoonot it wasn’t, if you pay attention to when players take corners they don’t directly put it on the line, since the ball is spherical it can still hover over the line without touching it. So technically it is still in
@Cadian122 I thought I saw it go out too, and then I watched another angle and from *that* angle it looked like it definitely *did not* go out. "Saw with my own eyes." Yes, because optical illusions don't exist and the shadow of the ball and lighting can fool eyes. *That* is why the technology is there. To "see" things our eyes can't. And yes, it may not be infallible, but neither are *your eyes!* And I trust that technology *a lot more* than some random TRvidr, *especially* when I saw it myself, and after seeing other angles, I realized my eyes *very much* had been *lying* to me on at least *one* replay (again, I had no idea if it was the one that made it look like it was only touching green, or the one that made it look like it was definitely still touching white, but *one* of those replays was clearly and optical illusion, and technology showed that it was *the first* one)! They *proved* it was in! They *had to* to overturn the call! If there was *any* doubt, they would never have been allowed to overturn the original call! I don't know what internal struggle is going on that makes you want to demonize the refs and a well-deserving Japanese team, but get over it and *stop* projecting your own liabilities onto others (don't pretend like that's not what you're doing)!
@Crokka Doodledoo ball was in. Ball doesn't have to TOUCH the line, it just has to have a part OVER the line. Many angles showing it was in by a smidge
@Mazdak Mina I'm not gonna argue with you with what my own eyes saw... I saw grass clearly between the ball and the line.. It was out The refs also messed up in the France V Tunisia Game with a false offside ruling ... So even with the tech the refs can mess up... The tech has also caused a soar of handball PKs and most of those situations the handballs are far from intentional ... There are many other times where VAR gets it right... So just because there is new tech does not mean its infallible... There has been instant replay and challenges in the NFL for decades and yet almost every week at some game a ref screws it up... It happens and im just calling it out when it happens... Ive been watching soccer for over 15 years... And im very well aware of how the rules were and how they used to be... Im not directly opposed to VAR tech and it makes more correct decisions then not... But there are situations where it is still not correct and im not gonna just blindly accept it... Myself and half of a dozen of my fiends watched the game ... Some of us rooting for Spain.. Some for Japan... And all of us could see the ball was out... It was and always will be a travesty of the highest order..
@Cadian122 People like you clearly have no idea how technology works or the VAR rule is applied. The ref originally called it *out,* and when *that* happens, the *only* way to overturn a call is if *conclusive* evidence is there to do so (i.e., the VAR had to *prove* the ball was in, not "find no evidence that the ball was out," despite what *everyone* keeps claiming). And using the same tracking motion cameras that they use in both their goal-line and offside technology, they *proved* that (by apparently less than a millimeter) the ball did *not* completely cross the line, which means it was *in,* which means the ball *was* rightfully in play when the goal was scored! Sorry to break it to everyone, but the goal *was* valid, and in *previous* years *without* this technology, it would have been *wrongfully* disallowed (and many times, controversies like that happened, and for those who don't remember what football was like before goal-line, offside, and VAR technology - as you might be able to tell by how many times each game technology is used to overturn bad calls - there were *endless* errors)! Educate yourselves! And more importantly, the fact that you're complaining about the technology is the equivalent of confessing, "my team cannot win when the playing field is fair and level. I want to go back to when it was *unfair* and my team had an unfair advantage, because I do not believe my team is talented or good enough to win *without* that unfair advantage!"
@CARLOS LOPEZ the second goal of Costa Rica I think that’s on purpose of Germany’s defenders to warn Spain. Neuer just intended to let the ball go to the goal. Normally he just jump and catched the ball easily.
@Na Tee Traditionally Costa Rica is the weaker team capable to score goals against a way stronger team. It is not your weaker team accustom to be crushed any amount of goals to zero( that's why I was surprise the Spain completely walked over Costa Rica and the latter was incapable to put any real opposition by scoring at least a couple of goals ). Hardly the ticos would be capable to hold on to the result unless this german team was that one from 2018 which really sucks . I am pretty sure that the Costa Rica from 2014 which was formidable thank to the Colombian coach Joel Pinto would have been capable to defeat this Germany . Anyway it was a great game . Germany kinda back to be the typical team capable of overturning an adversarial score, but it wasn't enough to qualify, and Costa Rica was the typical weaker team capable to score and make the game highly enjoyable.
We could say that it was some sort of group of the death . The only thing that destroys the premise is the crushing defeat Costa Rica suffered at the mercy of Spain. Anyway it seems that Germany is going under something that happened to France and Italy. After winning something glorious in great form , you go down in terrible fashion for a couple of world cups or tournaments of any kind . Hopefully Germany applies some serious reengineering of its soccer therefore it could be back to be highly competitive again as a national team . Nowadays we see how a traditional lackluster England has turned again into a powerhouse , and France has turned from a great team with a exquisite game into a formidable steamroller.
Those 3 minutes when Costa Rica and Japan where going through and Power houses Spain and Germany were out were insane! Even if it only lasted 3 minutes!
@Hung Phan I didn’t realise you made two comments. So the first response is directed to your response on Germany being disorganised. Unfortunately it is true that Neuer has health problems. I have to say that they are to blame for Neuer’s poor performance in the game
@Michael N I thumbs up your comment. However, the op might have come to that conclusion looking at the amount of goalless draws, which may indicate parity (or malaise) depending on one's perspective. That heat over there could have something to do with that. I would be miserable. I can't remember seeing this many goalless draws in a WC and I have watched quite a few over the last 45+years. This group stage left me disappointed to see some teams advance and even more disappointed some others did not to go through.
@Shadow-Man they could have easily beaten Spain as well but weren't able to but the ball in the back of the net on multiple great scoring chances and had the very close offsides call go against them on the set piece goal.
Respect to Costa Rica, they had a chance to go through, but played a tough battle! Hope to see you guys in 2026, since USA, Canada, and Mexico don't need to compete to qualify, it should make it easier for Costa Rica
This world cup has been the best group stage matches ever. I was never this excited to see some unknown teams taking down giants with no fluke but absolute class and determination! Europeans having the best teams and best leagues has been thoroughly challenged. We will see more upsets in coming up world cups since most teams are getting more confident and we might see some more upsets in knockout stage.
Bro every world cup is like this. There are different surprises everytime. Most probably will go to the one of the power houses which are the south americans and some europeans. But nothing will be easy.
@Vadim Ast Projects Playing your hardest for every prize. Going in, This very talented German team had the much better odds to advance by scoring at will as many goals they need. Costa Rica played well enough to not suffer a humiliating defeat, making their compatriots proud. That’s all. Later bud
I am so proud of how hard Costa Rica fought despite their tough first match. They didn't get the result, but put everything on the line. Great job, guys. From a USA fan.
From a Costarican, thank you for recognizing our struggle! Costa Rica has a lot of potential but our team has to believe more in themselves. Our small country puts on a show of the unexpected. Please go and watch what our team did in the 2014 World Cup, that was insane! We almost did it again but wasn't our time.
Another USA guy here. CR could've just thrown in the towel after getting thoroughly thumped by the Spaniards, but they fought back & were w/in 20 mins of perhaps the greatest group stage comeback. Hard to believe we're the only CONCACAF rep in the Sweet 16. Better luck next time.
This has been THE MOST competitive World Cup I've ever seen. Upsets left and right. Close matches all round between teams from all regions of the world. You have teams pulling off upsets and then turning around and losing to teams they should be more competitive with. Teams getting routed then coming up strong the very next match. For everyone out there who was worried about expanding the Cup due to lack of competition, this World Cup puts that narrative to rest FOR GOOD!
Coming from a Mexican, huge respect to Costa Rica despite that big first game loss you fought hard to a point in the game where they were qualified at 2nd place. Good job representing Concacaf, now only one concacaf team left the USA I hope they also beat the Netherlands
@○pınLınz lol and somehow the US has the best higher education system in the world. Look at any list...Harvard, MIT, the UC system, I can go on. The reality is .... wherever you are, we already kicked your a**
@Merkurial Spreading information that is correct isn't an "idiotic argument". That's only seen this way by individuals like yourself. There are multiple countries in Africa and the people still call themselves Africans. As well as referring to themselves as their host countries. The same goes for people in Europe. Its not an either or thing. A person can be European and French, German etc. However for some odd reason individuals in the United States have hijacked the label American as their own and when someone attempts to correct them their feeling get hurt.
@○pınLınz United States of America. It's citizens are therefore called Americans. What should be call them instead? United Staters? Do we start referring to Mexicans only as Americans? Are people from Brazil Americans and no longer Brazilians? Stop wasting time on such an idiotic argument.
The 2nd (and winning) Japanese goal was illegitimate. The ball was clearly outside before the Japanese player crossed it! No excuse for VAR! How can they possibly miss that clear view! Both Spain and Germany were robbed!
Musiala is such a fantastic player. Unfortunate that he didn't score this tournament, but mark my words, he will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
@chinafriends Or not… If he had played for England they probably would have gone out in the group stage. Super talent but needs more composure in front of goal
4:22 replay ... I'm confused about offside ruling. Wasn't a German player offside? Shouldn't that goal have been disallowed? Or is offsides only attributed to the specific player that grabs the ball from the air or ground following a pass?
@jrr44 German player in a hurry for the restart to add more goals to the Goal Differential tally. Costa Rican player, stalling to prevent Germany from running up the score, eliminating both teams. Referee should've intervened and prevented the physical altercation.
The fact that Costa Rica qualified for 3 minutes with Japan is mind boggling. I wish they kept the lead! They really fought hard after their 7-0 thrashing
Really proud of my Tico veterans and young boys who participated here in this world cup. They stood up to Germany, and at one point, we had them racing to score, that's alot of heart and alot of skill to get to that point. Their process just started before this world cup, i hope it only gets better.
Costa Rica isn’t a bad team! I would change the coach and find young talented quality strikers bc Campbell, & Bryan Ruiz gotta go! Same with Borges! The future is bright! Hope Costa Rica can compete again in World Cup 2026
@Hung Phan He has literally played in 6 world cup matches since then. Do you realize how ridiculous this is, you are complaining a player didn't score in 6 random games over 8 years.
@컹ग्रैچوலேшаνσ in world cup, everything stopped after the goal in the semi final of 2014. After that, he played in 6 other matches of 2018 and 2022 and they are totally trash performance. Audiences couldn’t even realize that he was on the field in matches. Everything at world cup stopped in 2014 for him.
@Hung Phan Hahahahaa Muller stopped improving himself? Muller got older. Your just basing you idea of "spirit" on their results in those tournaments. The reality is they just got unlucky this tournament, and being unlucky is enough to send you home because it's only 3 games.
Unfortunate that a powerhouse like Germany has been eliminated from the tournament. 2nd time in a row. Well, maybe they should had focused more on football and less on making a political statement and forcing western values on the people of Qatar.
The fact that Germany won and it only helped Spain is hilarious 😂 why even try so hard?! They should have let Costa Rica win at 2-1 and knocked Spain out too. They did them a HUGE favor! Spain should not have gone through.
as aa costa rican, this result was absolute heartbreaking. However they really gave it their all out there and im so proud of them. Rough start, but regardless, we fought for it.
Kudos to CR for such an incredible game. Germany are unfortunate again, but that’s what happens when you don’t play your A game when it matters most, loss to Japan was no fluke as Japan beat Spain also. At some point prayed CR would get through eliminating Spain ! Too much big league money making these European players complacent!
@Arcitek "Dubai"? Is that the extent of your imagination of "many new things"? Not to mention, my memories will last a lot longer than the 30 seconds Costa Rica advanced out of their group.
@Vadim Ast Projects “Who cares if you went to Dubai and got to experience so many new things in your life? You’re gonna die anyways and everything will be meaningless.”
@Bobby Carter First off, they do exist and they still live in the States, what an ignorant comment. If there was a requirement based on ethnicity, national teams would be significantly worse. France isn’t winning the last World Cup without Mbappe and Kante. There’s no real way to draw ethnic lines especially in diverse countries so it’s impossible to have any NT requirements based on race.
@Latin Doggy I mean is there a shortage of male referees? they choose woman to specifically defame, harass and interfere in other nations' culture and politics. Fifa rules say that any team trying to defame other persons and nations will be disqualified for at least 10 games, and they're doing it themselves.
Germany tried everything today and played well throughout the tournament expect 15 min of first game. there is no shame going down fighting . Belgium team so called "golden generation" was pathetic
@187Chriss Yes, they're too young, this cup should be their practice for the next cup. But your comment about "lucky" or "expected" to win in 2010 because they were in those clubs makes no sense or you're a noob. Because it just shows that they were so good, that they were part of the two best clubs in the world at that time.
Füllkrug played even fewer minutes and not one complete game but got two goals and one assist. A shame that Flick did not let him start in any game but rather started his old Bayern buddies.
Pura Vida! The most exciting group so far. Anybody can win, it's just matter of goal. Good that Spain bank on their goal difference. To the ko stage, unreal
Although Germany has jinx of losing against Italy, they never have good result in WC when Italy didn't qualify. Italy failed qualifying in 2018 wc - Germany was eliminated in group stage Italy failed in 2022 - Germany is eliminated in group stage.
Musiala is such a fantastic player. Unfortunate that he didn't score this tournament, but mark my words, he will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
@RandomBaguette Hmm interesting, thank you for explaining that so clearly brother. Much appreciated. Last question, so it doesn't really matter how much goals a team a makes? Just as long as they win right?
@Juceo. Each team in a group plays 3 matches. (1 match against each team in their group). Whichever two teams in that group get the most points move on to the next stages of the WC. 3 Points if you win. 1 Point if you draw. 0 if you lose
@BackwardMist So does Costa Rica move on from this? Edit: oh nvm seems they're both eliminated. So basically if you lose 2 matches you're eliminated (like Germany, even though they scored 4?)
2:52 I heard they were going to be female referees. I watched several games and then I just forgot, I haven’t seen a single one up until now. It is Qatar after all so I wasn’t expecting many
@paul higgins Germany needed to make up for the goal differential to have any chance to advance since Japan was projected to win against Spain. This would tie them in terms of points with Spain but wouldn’t give them a chance to advance due Spain having scored more goals during the group stage. That’s why Germany needed to score more goals and time was running out. Hence no celebrations after the goal score and aggressive attempts to retrieve the ball and get it back to center so the game can resume and they can have more chances to score goals (again extremely unrealistic outcome as proven by the final result)
I am so proud of how hard Costa Rica fought despite their tough first match. They didn't get the result, but put everything on the line. Great job, guys. From a USA fan.
@Michael Lubin that's not the way it works. The person who headed the goal was offside when his teammate got the ball... But by the time teammate headed the ball to him... He's on side now.
I'm new to football can someone explain to me why 3:23 happens? are they just doing that to delay the game? and if it is, is that allowed? if it's allowed then is that looked down upon in football or is that normal? lol
From 7-1 destruction of Brazil and World Cup Champions in 2014 to getting knocked out in the group stage back to back World Cups... crazy, this is why the world cup is so unpredictable
