MANY pole-arms have axes, several only axes. A pollaxe has two sides, including a hammer or pick, and a spike, which is quite extra for "axe on a pole". The morning star was a specific type of two-handed mace. A spiked ball-and-chain flail is more accurate as a historical description, though barely a real weapon in any form, much less having a specific name. The most likely military flail was a rod with A joint or a FEW links of chain attached to a LONG stick, like the farming implement, since anything else was even more suicidal, especially a long chain on a short stick.

@The Beaked Doctor A mace can, and most commonly did, have flanges though. It's just the most effective way of doing it. The big, smooth ball head mace, to be structurally sound, would have to be rather heavy, thus would be slow and clumsy to use against an actual enemy, and a miss could easily throw the wielder off balance, whereas a flanged mace was light, nimble and could go through even plate armour rather easily.

A flail is a ball on a chain attached to a handle, a mace and morning star are both attached directly to the handle of the weapon. A mace has no spikes while a morning star does have spikes, a flail can have either spikes or no spikes but is obviously different since it’s the only one of the three that isn’t attached directly to the shaft of the weapon. Dungeons and Dragons can teach you a lot about medieval weaponry, folks.

Checking and it seem that the threshing tool flail is two hinged poles, while the weapon flail is a spiked ball on a chain at the end of a pole. But I definitely thought poleaxe immediately as well.

Time to flex my medieval weaponry knowledge! What you made is called a Morning Star flail (named for the star like ball at the end). Morning stars come in many different forms but always consist of a pole and a “star”. Flails are the HARDEST WEAPON TO MASTER! So don’t feel bad Katelyn, it takes a lot of practice. Evan, you mentioned making an axe on a pole. That’s a real thing and it’s called a poleaxe. It would have been a much easier weapon to use but very difficult to make unless you are a master smith. The morning star you made looked awesome and deadly; however, if you want a more effective weapon, I would ditch the chain. It just makes it more difficult to use. Good luck 🤞
