Petition for this to be the new October tradition. Every year a different preservation technique is attempted. The pumpkins are just named Francis the 2nd and Gronk the 2nd going down the line, until one day a future Francis will win and avenge it's ancestor.

It was the saw!! I knew right from the beginning the saw would introduce microbes into the pumpkin. You guys should do this again next year, but carve the pumpkins in a sterile environment first! :D

Not, it was not the saw. It is the humidity. The humidity is trapped inside the resin. As water can not scape, it accelerate the rotten process.. you can see this phenomen with non completely dry wood covered with acrylic.

You coat the cuts with Vaseline, then wrap the pumpkin in plastic wrap and put it in the fridge until Halloween, and the carving looks just as nice and fresh as when you first did it. Happy Halloween!! 👻 🎃

Great experiment!! Always wonder what the outcome would be. Something to consider in your experiment is that you used UV activated resin (as it sets faster) and that can be the reason that the pumping decay faster. Similar like exposing the pumpkin to high levels of sunlight. Maybe 2 part epoxy provide different results.

You should also do a pumpkin with cinnamon in it. That is what I used to do with pumpkins and it makes them last a lot longer.

Next year try this again but after they both dry out resin one and see how they age differently. I usually leave my pumpkin out til it starts to fall into itself or shrink and its usually never black, some white fuzzy mold though. I do also live in the refridgerator of the us , Minnesota so it preserves a little bit due to weather. That should also be a factor of your experiment.

I think one of the issues was that the moisture was sealed inside, whereas the unpreserved pumpkin could dry out

I used to work for a sla 3d printing company in the mid 2000s. We did mainly small run modeling for inventors and what not. One project we got though was for some artist who was doing a display on decay. We took a pumpkin, let it half rot, and then slowly covered it into a cub of clear resin. Was really strange.

This guy at my university decided to make an "inside out" pumpkin for a pumpkin carving competition last year. Basically he just covered it in wax and made it into a giant candle. It didn't take long for it to get disgusting so I figured this wouldn't go well lol

I did a swede jack-o-lantern (closer to the traditional turnip than a pumpkin), and I just allowed it to shrivel on the mantel piece. It never grew mould in the two months I left it there, just became desiccated. I much preferred it to pumpkin because it's not goopy, but you do have to put more effort into carving out the inside

I've thought way to much about this. I think if you let the pumpkin sit for a few days in a room with a dehumidifier then cover it in resin that might work. Moisture seemed to be the problem.

you know. an idea might be to let the pumpkin dry a day or so before sealing it in resin, moisture causes rot in some cases so maybe that will boost your initial thoughts?

I wonder how the experiment would have turned out if the pumpkins were left outside. The biggest problem for the resin pumpkin was the moisture trapped inside, but outside the rain would probably level the playing field a bit

I have given eternal life to a lemon (the first one our tree ever grew) it is very tiny and coated in a loooot of uv resin (I put it in an ice cube mold and it has at least a cm of resin on each side). It still looks great after almost 2 1/2 years. The eternal lemon ice cube

pumpkin guts are in my top 3 favorite smells for sure haha I spend much of my carving time just inhaling with my face almost completely in the pumpkin
