I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but the Crystal Palace DID host a cat show in the late 19th century, and Harrison Weir really WAS the chief judge who resigned in 1890. The secretary's rambling monologue is Taliesin cramming all his research notes into the game to prove he's done his homework.

As the story goes, in ages past, there once was an entity called Wil that challenged Taliesin’s role as ultimate omnipresent horror being. Taliesin, being beyond emotion, was at first dismissive of this finite consciousness, but Wil continued in his provocation of the eldritch being. Eventually, Taliesin found Wil’s annoyance too much, and cursed him across a his forms with terrible dice luck. Yet, in that moment, Taliesin found that his experience of frustration had created a mortal form, that could experience all emotions. Taliesin was intrigued, and thus to this day, is able to contain (somewhat) his consciousness in the form we see, enjoying his time amongst mortals while this form manages to not decay.

He went with us to a horror nights at magic mountain and dude was screaming like a 12year old girl the entire time. Rest of the group could only laugh the entire time. If you're attentive, on his first "read" Liam mutters that he does a Psychology check, and samewise when he announced to the table he only has 05 in Occult. When you consider there aren't Deception or Lie skills among the Investigator Skills, Psychology (or Persuasion, but that would be kinda flag) WOULD be a logical stat for a player faking a medium to use, both in-game and out of to mess with the rest of the table.
Weber 9 aylar önce
@DoKuma Starlight Yeah. As soon as I heard Liam say his Occult wasn't one of his good rolls, I started looking at his act a bit more closely, and noticed how everything he asked of Taelesin was very specific. He wouldn't say, specifically, what he was doing. Just that he was, more or less, doing "his thing". I think the plan was basically Taelesin saying "I'll keep letting you bullshit your way through checks, by being vague, to make everyone think you're actually a mystic... but there will be a time when it's all gonna fall flat." and so when Liam tried to activate the stones, he realized... oh fuck. He's letting it fall flat right now.

Honestly it comforts me so much to see Taliesin reading from notes as he is dming. I do the same thing since I can’t trust myself to share all the information my players need off the top of my head and I always feel bad watching critical role and seeing Matt able to narrate everything while looking the players in the eyes. But Taliesin was able to pull off an amazing session while reading off of notes which means that I can to!

testfire3000 2 aylar önce
Every good DM (or GM, Keeper, or whatever a game calls the referee) has to have notes. Some like Matt Mercer just have them memorized but still handy just off screen. You can time to time see him glancing while the players make jokes about drinking, etc. Taliesin did a wonderful job here and had a lot going on at once, with SO many ways the players could run into trouble. 10/10 would watch Taliesin run another CoC game again.

Is no one gonna talk about the absolutely STUNNING set design? The props are all functional and play an important role in the plot! And the lighting set up works with the devices! They let Taliesin open up a rift in the office to just chill behind him! You can even see arms and tentacles coming out of it, and that’s not even mentioning the costumes! I’m so impressed by the CR team!
Saighin 27 gün önce
The functional props were _amazing_ & I especially like that when the players themselves began to solve the puzzle-box hidden compartment Tal immediately opted for forgoing the planned investigation roll & let them outright role-play discovering the artifact in the box's false bottom 💓

Chaosium really owes a debt of gratitude to Taliesin and the CR players, guests and tech crew for this one. Taliesin started off by not spoiling the prewritten adventure that comes with the CoC boxed set, so anyone who wants to play it will get a fresh start. The adventure Tal wrote was amazing. Clearly, he had access to a lot of special effects and props that most people wouldn't. Nothing like that comes in the box. But it is the story told in imagination that makes it come alive just like every episode of Critical Role where (I don't know about you!) masterful storytelling makes everything seem so real I can almost touch it. Tal could have just as easily used an egg timer or tiny hourglass to simulate how long the heat would drive the Sterling engine. So could you! The rest of the props were mostly atmospheric, just like the outfits. I just loved this story and the game play! I remember playing CoC way back in the early days when Chaosium put out their first set. Good times!

I remember that I've had at least two character deaths in the games I've ran. The first guy was crushed in a cave in caused by cultists using dynamite. The second guy died by being grabbed by a giant bat monster and dropped off a cliff. Both players said that it was a very cool way to go out.
Persephone Underground
That reaction made me look at Call of Cthulhu a whole new way. At first I was like "but doesn't it suck if you die, why would anyone really like a game where you get killed off so easily?" because I'm used to getting attached to my characters and a lot of self-projection. Instead, having them go out in epic ways for a cool story is a very different approach to RPGs for me. It's a different kind of fun from D&D for instance, but his reaction illustrated how it can be just as awesome to "lose" as to win in these games.

I wish this was a published adventure. As it's probably my favourite Call of Cthulhu adventure I've witnessed. It has a really great vibe, with intriguing bad guys that don't rely on gore to be scary, and the perfect amount of slow burn to really bring in the mystery. I really want to Keeper it for some friends, so I am probably going to have to make most of it up instead.

I think we have a new Halloween tradition that could be started off the back of this one shot. On the closest Thursday night to Halloween Taliesin runs a one shot Call of Cthulhu instead of the usual Critical Role.

@IvanLagayacrus Red Hook was a rather early work of his, so that really isn't representative of his late-life views. And he didn't hate his wife. His later works are far more ... balanced, as can be seen in "At the Mountains of Madness", than stuff like Red Hook and a good bit of his correspondence shows that towards the end of his life, he had begun to change his ways. That process was sadly cut short by his death. Now don't get me wrong, the man had ISSUES, but he wasn't a monster.
IvanLagayacrus 4 aylar önce
@Burger Kang he also hated his wife and everything about her and where she lived, and most of his stories have strong undertones of condemnation of interbreeding. While there is a letter stating that he regretted his mindset, his stories are still HEAVILY charged, probably most notoriously The Horror at Red Hook

After 3 years and hundreds of hours watching D&D content, this one shot is what inspired me to start DMing. So far I’ve only run 4 sessions but it’s such a great feeling when your players are having fun. Also Phil Lamarr was amazing.
testfire3000 2 aylar önce
That is the most satisfying part of running a game, seeing your players having fun. Laughing, joking, or genuinely terrified of what is happening! Whatever the results, as long at the evening ends with players wanting another go at it, you have success! I hope your campaign has been going strong!

God one of the my favorite one-shots, with all the details and just Taliesin’s general story telling was just so immaculate. @thethegreenmachine I mean, it's a whole new system, so yeah. But most of the rules are on how to create the characters. But it's also a whole different system from DnD. It uses percentile dice for most rolls, but doesn't have modifiers, instead has thresholds for success on their character sheet. From there, the complicated stuff is how health and speed work, and in some ways, combat. It's basically that it's based off of your degrees of success. Say you swing to punch someone and have an 60 in unarmed combat, and they have an 80 in dodge. They roll against yours, so, let's say you both roll a 40. That's below both of your thresholds, so that should be a draw, right? Well, not really. Your 40 is simply a success, but your enemy's 40 is a difficult success, because it breaks that halfway threshold, therefore he wins the roll and dodges without issue. Those are the big things, rule wise. Once you get a hang of them, they're intuitive though. And there's some really good solo adventures (functionally like a choose your own adventure book of your childhood) that help you learn how to play, without needing someone to play with you, not even a "keeper"/DM.
