I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but the Crystal Palace DID host a cat show in the late 19th century, and Harrison Weir really WAS the chief judge who resigned in 1890. The secretary's rambling monologue is Taliesin cramming all his research notes into the game to prove he's done his homework.

As the story goes, in ages past, there once was an entity called Wil that challenged Taliesin’s role as ultimate omnipresent horror being. Taliesin, being beyond emotion, was at first dismissive of this finite consciousness, but Wil continued in his provocation of the eldritch being. Eventually, Taliesin found Wil’s annoyance too much, and cursed him across a his forms with terrible dice luck. Yet, in that moment, Taliesin found that his experience of frustration had created a mortal form, that could experience all emotions. Taliesin was intrigued, and thus to this day, is able to contain (somewhat) his consciousness in the form we see, enjoying his time amongst mortals while this form manages to not decay.

I love how so many strong men ive met are scared easily. Like i consider myself strong. I played hockey growing up and lifted weights in high school and college. But i dont consider myself a stereotypical "strong man". But the strong men i have met get really scared really easy. I worked with a man that served. He was a strong guy. Extremely confident. He went with us to a horror nights at magic mountain and dude was screaming like a 12year old girl the entire time. Rest of the group could only laugh the entire time. Nothing was scary with him screaming the entire time.

The sanity rolls here are fascinating here. Especially Ashley’s after opening the chest. “You hear a faint knocking, just on the edge of your hearing” leads to “Oh, it must be some young hooligans outside throwing stones.” I feel it really lends to an overarching theme in most Lovecraftian works, that being humanity’s overriding desire to understand or explain every phenomenon it encounters and the shutdowns when there simply is no understanding or explaining such eldritch occurrences that the staples of cosmic horror

LOL I remember playing a Limping WW1 Aussie Veteran in the US in COC. Everyone ran into a house to investigate while I limped in. They all got to the Library and found a horror Chess Set. The GM then stated I'd reached the library and asked me what I was going to do. I decided that they had the library well covered and started knocking on the walls trying to find secret doors, whereupon the GM required Everyone in the Library to make San checks :D Different Game same GM, We went into a different library and one of the other players picked out a book, said "This is intersting" then read out a passage whereupon the GM made everyone roll 3d6 san damage except for the reader who had to roll a d100. The Reader rolled 1, everone else rolled more than 10.

Honestly it comforts me so much to see Taliesin reading from notes as he is dming. I do the same thing since I can’t trust myself to share all the information my players need off the top of my head and I always feel bad watching critical role and seeing Matt able to narrate everything while looking the players in the eyes. But Taliesin was able to pull off an amazing session while reading off of notes which means that I can to!

Every good DM (or GM, Keeper, or whatever a game calls the referee) has to have notes. Some like Matt Mercer just have them memorized but still handy just off screen. You can time to time see him glancing while the players make jokes about drinking, etc. Taliesin did a wonderful job here and had a lot going on at once, with SO many ways the players could run into trouble. 10/10 would watch Taliesin run another CoC game again.

I remember that I've had at least two character deaths in the games I've ran. The first guy was crushed in a cave in caused by cultists using dynamite. The second guy died by being grabbed by a giant bat monster and dropped off a cliff. Both players said that it was a very cool way to go out.
Persephone Underground
That reaction made me look at Call of Cthulhu a whole new way. At first I was like "but doesn't it suck if you die, why would anyone really like a game where you get killed off so easily?" because I'm used to getting attached to my characters and a lot of self-projection. Instead, having them go out in epic ways for a cool story is a very different approach to RPGs for me. It's a different kind of fun from D&D for instance, but his reaction illustrated how it can be just as awesome to "lose" as to win in these games.

Chaosium really owes a debt of gratitude to Taliesin and the CR players, guests and tech crew for this one. Taliesin started off by not spoiling the prewritten adventure that comes with the CoC boxed set, so anyone who wants to play it will get a fresh start. The adventure Tal wrote was amazing. Clearly, he had access to a lot of special effects and props that most people wouldn't. Nothing like that comes in the box. But it is the story told in imagination that makes it come alive just like every episode of Critical Role where (I don't know about you!) masterful storytelling makes everything seem so real I can almost touch it. Tal could have just as easily used an egg timer or tiny hourglass to simulate how long the heat would drive the Sterling engine. So could you! The rest of the props were mostly atmospheric, just like the outfits. I just loved this story and the game play! I remember playing CoC way back in the early days when Chaosium put out their first set. Good times!

One of the scenarios in the starter set begins with Rupert Merryweather inviting a selection of his old friends (the investigators) to visit him in hospital in Massachusetts in the 1920s. That's what Talesin meant by treating this as a prequel, so when this came out I was fully expecting them to return to it at some point but it doesn't seem like they will. It'd be really cool to see older versions of the surviving characters plus some new comers take on that adventure as it's honestly one of the best officially published TTRPG modules I've ever read.

@IvanLagayacrus Red Hook was a rather early work of his, so that really isn't representative of his late-life views. And he didn't hate his wife. His later works are far more ... balanced, as can be seen in "At the Mountains of Madness", than stuff like Red Hook and a good bit of his correspondence shows that towards the end of his life, he had begun to change his ways. That process was sadly cut short by his death. Now don't get me wrong, the man had ISSUES, but he wasn't a monster.
IvanLagayacrus
IvanLagayacrus 10 aylar önce
@Burger Kang he also hated his wife and everything about her and where she lived, and most of his stories have strong undertones of condemnation of interbreeding. While there is a letter stating that he regretted his mindset, his stories are still HEAVILY charged, probably most notoriously The Horror at Red Hook

I watched this two years ago, but when I saw this pop up in my recommended, I just had to say this. What. A. Cast. So much fun. Taliesin was made to GM Call of Cthulhu. I would love to see him do a longer series. That game deserves “Cthulhu Roll” series.
Soreg

It's Halloween season again, let the Ancient One hear us: we want more of the Crystal Palace. Taliesin said himself that it's basically Cabin in the Woods scenario with a lot of different horrors, I want to see more of them so much. Or at least see him put up the module itself. And hey, we have another half of the CR cast to scare! Please? Pretty please?

God one of the my favorite one-shots, with all the details and just Taliesin’s general story telling was just so immaculate. And the cast dressing up, all the props that work, it’s even more immersive and so nice. If this were ever animated or like an actual movie, I’d watch this even though I typically don’t watch horror.
