When you're making 7 of the item, though, you do benefit from only having to do the silicone mold once. Over time, the cost of the silicone would get spread out over each unit. But if you only need 1 of them and you aren't going to sell them, yeah you're a bit screwed with the silicone mold.

Guys, body double silicone from smooth on is what you want for life casting. That said, you should do it again with the alginate, you can get slower setting alginate for life casting, and have Katelyn submerge her hand holding the cup. When it sets, she removes her hand carefully leaving the cup inside and then just cast plaster into the void. The plaster will set around the cup and you just peel the alginate off and throw it away. It's cheap enough that it would still cost a few bucks. Then you'd have something akin to ceramic as the end result. Ideally you get a casting that works and you mold it in silicone later so you can make multiples.

I feel like the resin hand would be *perfect* if they added a gold band that matches the cup around the wrist, either as a full-sized base or just decoration (like the hand is wearing a bracelet). It would help make the color cohesion look a lot more balanced imo! But either way, I kinda dig the weird combo.

So! I hope you didn't toss your alginate. Because y'all could've done this another way! 1. Make alginate hand mold 2. Make plaster hand -can touch up plaster hand if needed. 3. Use plaster hand for silicone molds to be used in resin, and can utilize pressure chamber to remove bubbles. Bam!

Yours is "hands down" the better one! On a side note I recently wanted to make a waffle out of resin using an alginate mould, but after looking into it decided the two wouldn't work together. I went with a metal mould and had my first go with resin! You guys gave me the knowledge and confidence to try it and I see why you love it so much! Mine smelt like marzipan!

This was hilarious... but uh... you guys do realize that when Alginate is used, you make a plaster cast from the alginate mold and then make a silicone (or whatever material) mold from the plaster cast? obviously this /worked/, but the alginate/plaster casting can help with the bubbles as well as making an easier to work with mold lol.

@DieBoss Eyyy The alginate and plaster, and a cheaper slower setting silicone that they could have put in the vacuum chamber, might've only just rivaled the cost of the fancy quick-set silicone. But it would have given them a lot more freedom in their work-flow options.

Haha okay trust me; I understand your alginate mold pains; I’m a dental assistant and that’s what we use to take impressions of people’s mouths. It’s not awkward at all. It’s funny because I’m like “make sure to put a damp paper towel over it so it doesn’t shrink!” “Use cold water so it doesn’t set quick!” “Pour the resin quick after it so it doesn’t distort!”

I recommend getting a dye for each of the two parts in order to make sure everything is mixed well. Also, look up Bobby Duke Arts. He did something very similar and he had a sponsor of a brand of resin that was extremely clear used for casting

Hey guys! Disclaimer* I have never used resin, although I dream about it. Hahah BUT, I was just on Instagram and I saw somebody using a silicone mold and used a makeup brush to dry brush multi chrome powder straight on to the mold, then they poured resin. It left a really cool effect on the surface of the product once removed from the mold! I thought this could be a fun technique for a future experiment!! *science adjacent* lol

I used alginate in college a lot to make life casts and temporary molds. It picks up on detail amazingly! Like each small mole on your face will show up. It's also super fun to squeeze when you're done with it

I only discovered your channel (this one) a few days ago, and I've been binge-watching. I especially like your resin-themed videos, since I've been making some epoxy-featured 'Lazy Susans' and coasters, among other projects for a couple of years now.....So I really like seeing how you two experiment with using epoxy resin with different materials (glass, metal, wood, acrylic, etc.). Fun project! Few notes: You can win on function by just adding a base, hotglue or screws to fix it in place and make it more fancy ;) I've used alginate a lot.. I think we have some bubblegum flavor alginate here somewhere. I cast body parts (faces/hands) for cosplay costumes and halloween stuff. You could always try a head or face cast for halloween. It's a lot of fun! I've done it with my students a few times, fun to do and watch. I can walk you through the process if you like. My Daughter and I love the channel!

Personally, I love the DIY version better based on personal aesthetics! I like how the smoothness of the nails make it look almost like the hand has its own nail polish on (with the clarity of the glitters), the realism of the hand is less creepy imo, and I love that you could change the colors as you please depending on your own aesthetics (when you start out the project)! As far as the base of the DIY being narrow, you could always attach a wider base to it, either made from wood or more resin. Bonus points if you add a nonslip rubber layer to the very bottom.

I love the human one... seriously. Hands are as unique as fingerprints. How cool is that, to have something so unique as a desk ornament? Even with the cost-- once you have the mold? You could make several. Moreover, it would be simple to re-cast the hand into a wider base with more resin-- I can think of several methods.

I used to make masks before the pandemic and alginate is super fun to use but from everything I’ve seen really only works with water based products. Also the “buttocks” instructions come in handy when you have to do a full body cast for like a complete makeup application, mostly done in movies though. I haven’t had to do a full body cast for theatre yet

I feel like part of time/cost (or maybe another list mark?) should be a question of how much impact the work to make EXACTLY what you want - particularly in cases like this one where you aren’t trying to get a near/exact match but something that fits you better.

The advantage of using the silicone for the mold is that now you can make as many of those hands as you want and reuse the mold over and over again. Maybe mix some colors that look like decaying flesh (green and a tich of red) and make zombie hands for halloween. Also, you could have decreased the amount of bubbles by using the vacuum chamber before you poured the resin into the mold. Also, since the silicone was cured, you could have put it (with the resin inside) into the vacuum chamber and degassed as well. I find your videos very entertaining and the chemistry and interaction that you two have makes the videos worth while. Also, a tip on removing your hand and the cured resin from the silicone is to use compressed air. Spray air down into the mold as your pulling out will remove the vacuum that is created when you pull the objects out of the silicone.

When trying to remove the resin, what if you try to blow in some air using an air compressor? The silicone should give enough to allow the air to pass. The difficulty removing it is probably mostly the vacuum created. Adding the air should overcome that. Great project

So, a good solution I've seen used for resin to work out bubbles without a vacuum chamber is a "personal massager" because it shakes it fast enough for the bubbles to release quickly and efficiently. Kiwami Japan is a good example, if you ignore the weird, dark jokes. He made a resin knife too. I think that he used the technique I spoke of in that video

one of my fav things yall have made tbh, and i am not a fan of hand decor. also the texture diff is actually what did it for me, strange movement with beautiful complementary colors with an odd number of textures, very nice design elements tbh.

Have y'all ever experimented with coating a 3D object like this with a finishing layer of resin? I've seen you do final pours of clear resin on canvases a ton of times, but I am curious about how the process would work for a shapely object like this one, esp. with so many bubbles. Thank you both for your channel, we watch you when we need to feel better and it really helps :)

I have been experimenting with using an ultrasonic cleaner to get the bubbles out my resin. It would have worked great for this mold. Add your water to your ultra sonic, pop in your mold filled with resin (of course making sure not to get water in your resin), and let the ultrasonic bring all of the bubbles to the top. It works great! Kind of like how you vibrate your table to get bubbles out of your concrete, just super powered.

To compare them fairly they could have taken the "buy" hand and use it instead of Katelyn's hand. This way they would also have won in terms of FUNCTION!

I actually really liked this idea. Some suggestions though, if you were to ever try this project again. Instead of trying to directly mold your hand, make a wax cast of your hand first. The kind you make from just dipping your hand in wax. Will slightly take away some of the realism but would smooth out the texture to avoid all those micro bubbles. Also you can make multiple castings so you have multiple chances. Its even a pretty fast process so you don't have to worry about cramping your hand. Then you can save on silicon a ton by using brush on silicone and apply it in thin layers that dry relatively fast. Once you have enough silicon covering it, use a cheap plaster to make a shell. This provides a firm base to keep the silicons shape without over using the silicone. Also to de-mold the initial wax cast, you just have to heat it up and pour it out. I kinda would like to see you try this again, though maybe do it for Halloween. These kind of hand casts could make awesome spooky decorations.
