During startup did you notice any difference in how easy or how long it took to get the engine to start the engine?
Bob Thompson
Bob Thompson 2 yıl önce
I wish you had a dynamometer to measure the power of engines. But its likely that the power of the Mighty Farmabago would destroy it lol.
Bob Thompson
Bob Thompson 2 yıl önce
And i think the farmabago will make for a very useful large utility truck. Especially because of how tall it is. You can use it as a mobile platform for things like tree trimming and working on walls of houses ect. I think that part is a really cool thing to have. But it would be a good idea to build yourself a fence on top of it for safety. Im sure you could make something that you can easily out up and take down and that would be safe. You could also use a ladder on top of it to get extra height. But if you do do that then you should put the stability jacks down of the farmabago has them if not you should also make something that would work and be easy to use. A friend of mine had a scissor jack that had a hex to put the lug wrench on to turn it to raise up the jack and we used an impact wrench or drill to rasie it up. Its great for all kinds of things because of how fast you can raise the jack. So its easy to raise it up and put jack stands under cars because you just use the drill to zip up the vehicle put the stand under it then zip it down and go to the next one. Its better than pump pump pump. Lol. Just some ideas.
Bob Thompson
Bob Thompson 2 yıl önce
Maybe you could test some jacks. Like floor jacks bottle jacks aftermarket scissor jacks to see how strong they are how easily you can raise up heavy things and how much effort it takes to pump the jack to get it to raise heavy things. So that way you and everyone can get the one they like for theyre loved ones when they need them in a bad situation on the side of the road. The time spent there can literally mean life or death.

Just an update on the E3's... I ended up installing them from the information in this video. Initially, I noticed a reliable and constant 1-2 mpg increase, which I was happy about. But after driving with them for a while, they began to slowly taper off. I was suddenly getting my origional gas mileage, and then around 20,000 miles in, my gas mileage tanked. My engine also threw a P0420 code for a bad catalytic converter, and I suspected the spark plugs and incomplete burning of the fuel/air in the combustion chamber. I pulled them out, and sure enough, 2/4 had a much weaker spark than the rest. I replaced the plugs with NGK iridiums, and after driving 150-200 miles on the freeway my engine light went away and has not come back on since. So from my experience, they work well and do what they say they will. Just not for long!

I also bought E3 after watching this. I only drive around 2k miles a year, it's been 2 years and my engine starting acting up on cold start, gonna swap back to NGK iridium to see if that fixes it.

I changed the normal ngk for iridiums ones on my motorcycle and there were no diference at all until I changed the coil for a high voltage competition one, I could feel a slight improvement, better response on the bike, a little increase in speed 5 km/h and a better gas consumption from 29 - 30 km/L to 32 -34 km/L.

Iridium is more about durability than performance. I've never felt a difference in the 2, but doing a check after 50K miles the difference in wear is undeniable
andi hartono
andi hartono 5 aylar önce
@ericofire it is for performance. if you feel no difference then your bike isnt performance bike. iridium have higher melting point compare to copper. so technically it would survive higher rpm. if you have normal ecu and factory bike it would not matter.
Devin Stromgren
Devin Stromgren 5 aylar önce
@andi hartono Yes, they have a higher melting point, which means they last longer before they melt away, hance why they're more about durability than performance. The high temperatures that slowly melt your plugs away come from the sparks themselves, not the combustion.
Barry Sargent
Barry Sargent 4 aylar önce
@ericofire I think that's the case as well. It's all about durability, although, I've not had a go with the others. My cars manual states several types of plugs but recommended best - Iridium, I just do that, but they are not cheap.

Another great test and using the transparent cylinder head was an amazing move! The Pulstar had so much of a visibly faster and complete flamefront that I can't help but wonder how it would've performed relative to the others if the ignition timing were retarded and optimized for it. I suppose with that generator that isn't easily accomplished?

I have used the Pulstar in my VAG 1.8T for many years through two different versions and it definitely has a smoother power delivery and stopped a power delivery pulse I was experiencing that I felt when using NGK, the sensation I was feeling was like the engine was just slightly lean. With my first set, one plug failed and whilst waiting for warranty replacements I went back to NGK and the power delivery pulsation I had been chasing came back.

Very well presented. I have been using e3 plugs for at least 20 years (I think). They seem to work better in everything I use them on. Small engines are the most noticeable. One cold WI winter day my Poulan snowblower refused to start with my NGK iridiums, and after an exhausting effort to try getting it going, I finally went to my local O'Reilly store and picked up some e3 plugs. That snowblower started on the first pull and has not missed a beat since. I'll bet it's been 15 years ago. Starts on the first pull every time (honestly). Now durability is another subject. So, recently, when my 2018 Grand Caravan had an error code on #2 cylinder, and after seeing when I had to do to replace the coil, I decided to replace the OEM plugs at the same time. OEM's had 80000 on them anyway. My choice again was e3. Van now runs great. Time will tell. I certainly don't want to tear into that project again if I can avoid it. Keep up these great videos!!!!!!

VERY interesting to watch the flame front in real time, and particularly to see how much faster the flame propagated with the Pulstar compared to the other plugs. I would think that a more complete burn, with fewer uncombusted products in the exhaust gas, would lower exhaust gas temperature and improve emissions, lowering CO relative to CO2. They are bloody expensive, however, at $17 -$25 each! As always, very informative and useful video.

I am running E3s in my '11 Mazda Cx-7 and my '05 Hyundai Tiburon GT. Both cars have quite a noticable increase in performance, all around. Lifespan is yet to be determined, as the Mazda has only run them for about 3-4 months and the Tiburon, a few days. But so far, so good. Good video with a good comparison test between the different types. It helps to get a better idea of what they all are capable of, by actually seeing them tested under the same conditions, side by side.

Tried both Pulstar and e3 against iridium NGK in 1.8 L Corolla. Results on fuel economy mirror your results, but Pulstars were subject to high rate of failure at high cost per plug, iridium also was high cost with longest life, with e3 giving me about 1/2 life of the iridium at less than half the cost per plug. The higher the gas price, the more advantage I found on 3 vehicles and over 500,000 miles and over 20 years combined.

Yes, by showing me the efficiency of these other plugs is too minute to warrant the purchase. I purchased iridium plugs. They offer good benefits, don’t cost too much, and I change my engines more than the plugs (exaggeration but not at same time). I’ve got almost 100k miles on a batch and their gap is still the same as when inserted. My only question is what is the durability of these other plugs? New engines require massive work to even remove plugs nowadays and reducing frequency of plug changes trumps everything else.
K____ R____
K____ R____ Yıl önce
@Project Farm I have a comment regarding how long the generator lasts on any given spark plug. A more efficient plug can produce more efficient combustion, which can lead to more power produced, and a more energetic exhaust, which can mean better scavenging, which means more intake mixture, which means more fuel use, thus quicker usage of fuel. Thus, the best plug may not last as long running the generator. The Pulstar seemed top start the fuel burn more quickly, which is what led me to wonder about this. Maybe a dyno test with a known-quantity engine that is already well-broken in, that uses electronic fuel injection? It would be tedious, but a Hemi, for example (easily accessible but 16 plugs) could be put on the dyno to find what the plugs actually put out. You could also test plug orientation and see what, if any impact that had on the results. However, ironically, the plug that initiates combustion more rapidly may force a detonation situation more than the ones that initiate it more slowly, in which case the engine would pull timing and/or dump fuel to quell it. There are so many variables. One test you did NOT do was to see which plug produced the most kW of power. With a variable load, you could see which plug could produce the most power while maintaining the same RPM.

I bought a set of Pulstar plugs about 12 years ago for my Ford 2.3T powered 86’ Thunderbird Turbocoupe and 1 arrived cracked, They sent a replacement plug out overnight which was really cool of them. Over the course of four months they didn’t provide any noticeable improvements in economy or power but they started to crack and misfire towards the end of 4 months, after 2 cracked, I pulled the others out and went back to stock replacements, still no performance change or economy change, just wasted money on them. Back in the day I spent 200 bucks on 4 Pulstar plugs. I believe the capacitor inside the insulator took so much space that they needed a thinner (weaker) insulator and normal 4 cyl engine vibration was enough to crack them.

You should try Brisk Premium, it came with silver electrode, since silver can conduct more electricity more than iridum, platinum and copper, it generated bigger spark and more heat. I am currently using Brisk X-Line, it came with silver electrode as well and it is well proven on dyno machine, since i got more Nm torque and hp compare to the copper/iridium sparkplugs. However, i had to change them regularly every 5-9k miles bcause silver does not offer longer lifespan more than iridum and platinum.

Put some in my 01 Cadillac Deville and didn't have any issues for over 50k miles. MPG was unaffected but had more get up and go on the freeway while passing.

An interesting addition to this video would be a very old spark plug vs. new. I saw a MPG increase when I just changed my spark plugs, but I couldn't tell you if it's from better plugs or just new.

Hey, thanks for this awesome video! If you feel like doing another one of these, how about comparing the materials they are made of? Copper vs. Iridium vs. Platinum vs Double Platinum vs Ruthenium. I was recently looking for spark plugs and it's difficult to know which one is the best value. I was on the Rock Auto website when I found these variations. Thanks again!

E3 is in theory a really good design, particularly where less spark energy is available. Reality is, a healthy ignition system leaves little on the table either way. I recommend some folks watch David Vizards content on ignitions systems. He is one of the early ones who stumbled on the E3 concept

Awesome test, a standard you have maintained throughout all your vids. One piece of info that could help decipher how much fuel was burning after the exhaust valve was open, would be to measure the exhaust temperature in mid test.

As always, good video and interesting testing. There is far more to Engine Efficiency than just Spark Plugs. Multiple Spark Plugs per Cylinder, Ignition Timing and Fuel Ratio, are all together factors in Engine Efficiency. The further the timing is "advanced", the greater the resistance to the piston travel to TDC because you are compressing more burning fuel and air. Multiple Spark Plugs, Timing closer to TDC and leaner Fuel Mixture will all improve Fuel Efficiency, when used "synergistically" together. The Fuel Air Mixture burning faster due to multiple Spark Plugs is significant, as is obvious in AirCarft Engines. There is way too much "hype" with all of the "methods and tricks" in the advertising of automotive "improvement products". You can waste a lot of money buying all of these so called "superior products". Have a great day!!!

I'm wondering if the spark plugs where the fuel finished faster are actually more efficient than the ones where the fuel didn't last as long considering that it could Combust or Ignite more fuel per combustion event thus needing more fuel per event & also being more efficient in terms of making power or igniting all the fuel.

I had always found Champion spark plugs to be more reliable and longer lived. Though, that wasn’t under test conditions, and over 60 years ago. My first instinct today would be to at least try the old reliable. Some variables that you hadn’t mentioned, but do bear directly on your results, include: (1) Manufacturer’s heat range: Manufactures recommend specific spark plugs for specific engines. Sometimes they recommend different heat range of plugs for different working conditions for an engine. I didn’t hear you mention whether or not these were the recommended plugs. Maybe I missed it? (2) Plug gap: Each engine and spark plug manufacturer has recommended gaps for their electrodes for each application. I didn’t hear you mention that, nor see you test and adjust for it. (3) The square, corner edges of both the center and side electrodes should be sharp, clean edges. Since you used new plugs, one should be able to assume good, sharp edges. Problem is, that may not be a good assumption. Double checking prior to installation, and filing off rounded edges where spark jumps from and to can sometimes make a difference. I tried both the E3 and the Iridium spark plugs as well as a split electrode version, in my 4.7l Tundra. My engine ran rough or not as smooth as the recommend NGK spark plug. Toyota told me that the vehicles computer was calibrated to use the NGK spark plug. The resistance values of the other three plugs through off the readings the computer is expecting. The worst one for me, was the E3 plug. I normally get around 15 to 16 miles to the gallon but with the E3, the best I could do was 13. Once again, great video.

This is why I like this channel! There's no yarda yarda yarda bs or slow to actually start the experiment. It's just straight to the test and clear results. It's a shame most other channels would make this just over 16 minute video into over half an hour by going on and on about pointless stuff. Like I was overwhelmed by the amount of information in the air filter test video because I wasn't used to that much info that quickly.

I worry that a visual determination of fuel quantity during testing might lead to unpredictable variations in fuel quantities. You might consider weighing the fuel in the bottle (weigh it in a separate container, and then pour it into the fuel bottle) to ensure absolutely consistent quantities. A cheap scale could get you within 1/10th of a gram. These are extremely valuable and worthwhile tests, and I'm very glad you're doing them!

Thanks for the great video!! The Autolite Racing plug at 1:08 looks a lot like the plugs I bought from JC Whitney about 40 years ago. What I liked about them is since they sparked in several directions, they did NOT wear out nearly as fast as the common plugs back then. I put 50K Miles on them, and they looked the same as when I first installed them. Now-a-days, iridium & platinum plugs have to last the lifetime of the car, in some cars they are buried or inaccessible and cannot be replaced near as easily. I guess that's good and bad... depending on how you look at it.

While I'm not familiar with Pulstar, I have seen that the use of a good antiseize can prevent breaking when that's a known issue........No, antiseize isn't recommended in every case, but in those cases with a known issue, antiseize can provide an effective solution. Consider trying it.

I run E3 in most of my cars. They are getting harder to find locally though. Across various cars they seem to be less prone to fouling even in less than ideal conditions. Gas mileage and MPG...who knows, too many variables to ever say they help with either. I just use them because like I said they tend to foul less often. I am interested in these Pulstar's though. That flame front was pretty impressive in your tests. It would be interesting to note if you do another test, what sort of carbon buildup results with the various plugs.

I’ve used all spark plugs you tested and have had the E3 fail prematurely the most in different engines. Give me good ole Champion plugs… I’ve also had the champions fail prematurely too, so I guess there isn’t a perfect plug… I actually don’t think the small gains are enough to overcome the cost of the more expensive plugs…

Something interesting I noticed during the generator test. There seemed to be an extra factor introduced during that test that is actually very important when it comes to spark plugs. That's heat range. Heat range of spark plugs can effect fuel usage. I believe a hotter plug typically uses more fuel than a colder plug (albeit a small percentage). Given that NGK you tested was an iridium core vs the copper cores of the others also may have made a slight difference. Technically copper cores are more conductive and more efficient. I think if you were to repeat the test, with the colder heat range NGK plug the manufacturer recommended in a copper core, the results would have been more comparable to the E3 and the Pulstar. You did a great job with this test otherwise, it was really interesting to see the difference between these plugs. Given the information I provided above, it actually raises another question or want for a spark plug test video. I'd be really curious what would happen if you repeated these tests performed but with different heat ranges on spark plugs. Would you see an improvement in MPG running a colder plug? Would too hot of a plug eventually damage the engine? Do the different heat ranges make an engine perform differently? Ugh I won't be able to sleep now.

One thing that he's not testing, and there's a lot of negative feedback on the Pulstar plugs after installing them and driving. Misfires, fouling out are the biggest claims. They are a very expensive plug and you don't seem to be able to get any mileage out of the investment. That's not good. For people who want to change plugs often? I can't justify a fast start and fuel economy for 19k miles. We didn't test lingevity here bc that's a long-term study.

We race a Spec Miata in SCCS, majors and super tours. We spent a lot on dynamic time, and that was the friend price. Block finish made a big difference but wefound that the NGK copper plug made the most power but had to be changed often. Also having the plug timed, that is clocked so the gap is open to the intake made a difference at high speed and high load. This is why I think multable ground electrode are bad for power.

I've been working on and around engines from 100k hp marine diesels to 30 hp motorcycles for most of my life and the single thing that will always blow my mind is the speed at which combustion actually takes place. We raced 2 stroke Kart engines at 22,000 rpm. twice as many sparks as on a 4 stroke. Only problems were fouling at low speed so we had to balance revving too slow with danger of cold seize from revving too high before the engine warmed up. Never had spark problems when on full noise. We used NGK standard heat range 7 to 9 depending on air temps.

Get a new rig and spend a about 6 months tracking my fuel, do a plug change, track another 6 months. Always an increase. Just so slightly. Now with gas prices today (Aug 1st, 2022) here in King County Washington State, I am happy for any savings. If I have a shop do my tune ups, they give my crap about bringing in my own plugs.
