The St Matthew Passion performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. Whether or not they are an enthusiast of classical music, practically everyone in the Netherlands knows the St Matthew Passion. Since 1870 the Netherlands has had a rich tradition of annual St Matthew Passion performances. The Netherlands Bach Society was formed in 1921, in reaction to the popular performances by Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The founders believed that the St Matthew should be performed where it belonged - in a church. The annual performance by the Bach Society in Naarden grew to become 'the' Dutch St Matthew Passion.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on April 16th and 19th 2014 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

What a beautiful, FREE gift the Dutch have given to the world! I find most versions of this work rather dense and heavy, but this is light, almost delicate. When I was in the ripieno choir at the Royal Festival Hall there must have been 40 - 50 of us. Here there are just SIX!! It's a much smaller, more authentic rendition, in a beautiful space with a beautiful sound. The quality of the audio - and the video - is supreme. These people have absolutely NAiLED it. Thanks and praise!!

Thrue! 20% of the annual budget of NBS (ca. €650,000.-) comes from the Performing Arts Fund. It is the cultural fund for music, musical theater, dance, theater and festivals in the Netherlands. The Fund supports all forms of professional performing arts on behalf of the national government.

@Jamal Labarge Those moving the pens were self-effacing lovers of God and him, but he directed their output. How tragic today's rather egotistical and thus small-minded and arrogant thereby showing no understanding of the message of the Passion Bach had.

He'd be politely requesting to play along.. He'd be the tubby guy with the Viola. He would be arranging for Royalties. He definitely would have a huge amount of business teaching Master's classes. I can imagine a lot of people who would part with a considerable amount of money. I think that we would discover how much Bach did and how much his musical descendants did.... I think we would be surprised. I think a lot of what we see here is or was the doing of Bach's musical descendants.

Piano Progress Channel Martine
@Ruth Hopeful a Muslim called Ruth? I suppose that you are a convert? Today I was in church listening to this, I can't even remotely imagine that a Muslim would be interested in listening the story of Crucifixion of Christ. To a Muslim, even the most liberal one, this crucifixtion story is pure blasphemy. Islam is based on the Christians and Jews being wrong in their belief for the most part, so your comment is kinda 'strange'.
Ruth Hopeful
Ruth Hopeful 2 aylar önce
@Piano Progress Channel Martine Muslims , or rather, those who call themselves Muslim come from diverse backgrounds and , like Christians, they are not entirely without prejudice, I am afraid that some fanatic Muslim has misrepresented Islam to you. The holy Quran totally endorses Christianity and Judaism. This is why Islam is better for you. You dont have to deny Jesus to become a Muslim. Think of it as an upgrade :) But Christianity is also the path to salvation and the holy book says so. Nobody is trying to steal your faith from you. Just trying to strengthen it. I do read your Holy Bible and enjoy it. Book of Proverbs my favorite. You may also wanna consider reading the Quran, Just one time from the beginning to the end. See with you own eyes and dont buy anecdotes.

This was the most deeply moving, and extraordinary performances of this work that I have ever heard (and that is with tribute to the many great performances of Bach's great work). But this performance has such pure depth of understanding of the music -- the genius of the music -- and each performer makes it their own. I have never been so moved by such commitment and attention to providing us with the glory of what this music and composer has given us. I will follow NBS from now on, and hope one day to actually be there in person. I have few other words I can say, except thank you. This is music and art, at its apex. The interviews and the documentary were also so informative and inspiring to watch. Van Veldoven's conducting made me hear the music in ways I never had before. It's a revelation for me.

I sang in the boys' choir for years, half a century ago, for the annual performance at Musis Sacrum in Arnhem, and this music has become part of my soul. It is heart-wrenchingly beautiful. Each time I hear this, I am profoundly moved, especially by arias like "Erbarme Dich". It is astounding how Bach was able to stuff so much emotion in the rigours of baroque music. So much sadness in beauty, and so much beauty in sadness... Especially in these Corona days, when we have lived in a culturally and social desert, and have seen our loved ones die and suffer, this music gives comfort: we will resurrect!

I sang in the St. Matthews Passion in Seattle years ago. I am a music major but had never heard it. I was astounded at the heart wrenching moments of some of the sections. I was so surprised at the emotion in Bach's music, having always seen it more as mathematical "clockwork" kind of music.

Also, in my family it was a tradition to listen to St Matthew's Passion on Good Friday. Unfortunately, I couldn't 't fully enjoy the music because I felt ashamed to be human and part of humanity that crucified Jesus. Strange in retrospect. I have to admit, I have an aptitude to feel guilty.

Winter evening. Restrained hum of voices. Those who were looking forward to this moment with impatience and trepidation, and those who, through ignorance or curiosity, found themselves under the shadow of his greatest creation. Sounds and emotions, gestures, frozen like lava, and the roads traversed, reflected in the heavenly mirror. Hope and a merciless curtain, ready to fly upward with a movement of the hand for each of us!

What a supreme gift from Netherlands. It's like a huge blanket of soul comfort to humanity, all over the world. For anyone blessed to have internet and interest this free gift is immeasurably life-giving. Greetings from Cape Town. People can be fickle, as described in this very Passion, but the music remains ever constant and dependable. Thank you NBS and TRvid..

I have just stumbled on this totally inspiring performance of Bach's St Matthew's Passion, while staying in to save the NHS and save lives in UK. Thank you Netherlands Bach Society and all the wonderful musicians and soloists. This is truly a definitive performance!! It has inspired, consoled, encouraged and uplifted me when I, and so many around the world this Easter weekend, are seeking assurance that all this Corona Virus Pandemic upheaval and pain will pass, and God does truly love His creation and each one of us (made in his image) so much, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life!! Thank you.

@MartaS Intellectually it's quite easy to conclude that there is a God and that he revealed himself. The notion that anything would pop into existence out of nothing is rather laughable. Look at your DNA, the most complex structure in this universe. It is information and information must have an intelligent cause. This OS software has an intelligent cause, so why would the DNA accidentally come into being and have an unguided natural cause?
MartaS

@Jaikee between war, poverty, disaster and disease, some of us don't feel that divine love..that's why we need Bach, because he clearly did

@Jaikee That the entire universe "popped into existence out of nothing" is, in fact, the scientifically based current most likely explanation. Don't confuse the psychological fact of your faith with the facts of universe outside of your understanding.

The countertenor in this is incredible! One of my thoroughly studied works of Bach. Although, St. John's Passion, BWV 245 is by far more refined by the composer, very well done. It brings me back to the 1600's in a way that offers so much respect to Bach through each of the very experienced instrumentalists here. It really is amazing! So much discipline and it's almost flawless!

The size of the orchestra shows just how musically ambitious Bach was! I am sure he had to battle an establishment unwilling to fulfill his petition of performing such a complex and monumental work for a church festivity. But at the end both Bach and the world won! One of the masterpieces of humanity.

he is utterly perfect I think. Greatest "Christus" I've ever heard. And appropriately he also sings the correct bass arias so you have the beautiful idea of Christ singing "Komm susses Kreuz" to himself and "Mache dich" as a kind of posthumous pastoral. If the piece is turned into an oratorio/opera with the "Christus" singer only singing the words of Jesus the work becomes too theatrical when it is not theatrical in the sense of identifying performer with role. Have you heard the Paul McCreesh recording with only 8 singers? It is wonderful as well but this one got right under my skin. I also just love watching the faces of singers and musicians as they listen to the others. Their faces say so very much.

This is for me the best version of St. Matthew passion there ever was and will be. The video is high quality not to speak about music witch is brilliantly executed.
