Phew. 3 and a half hours long. 3 years in the making. 30 locations visited. 100 sources used. 15 hours upload time. Delighted to finally have this out there. I’ll sort out a detailed bibliography and list of sources I used once I have recovered my mind a little... cheers all. Don’t forget to like and comment if you enjoyed this vid as it helps the algorithm to make it worthwhile and makes more projects like this one possible in the future. If you enjoyed it consider subscribing for 100+ other vids I’ve already made plus tons more epics in the future. Hopefully soon I should be able to travel overseas again and widen the focus out a bit from Britain once again!! Cheers for watching. Catch y’all next time.

I studied History, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation and Classical Civilisation at the University of Glasgow, with a lot of focus on the transitions from Late Antiquity through to the High Middle Ages, and did a course that covered the Welsh poetry covered here, and several on the Anglo-Saxon world. all under some of the leading scholars in these fields. I can say with some authority then, that this is a colossal work for one person to achieve. Even knitting these threads together into a coherent written narrative would be a massive challenge, let alone single-handedly producing a 3 and a half hour film that even someone with a casual interest could enjoy.. The scale and scope of such a tale is enormous and exceptionally difficult to understand, and yet you have made it easily digestible. I will recommend this video as a starting point for anyone wishing to understand the "Dark Ages", and indeed for any scholar of the period to enjoy. Wonderful, wonderful piece of work. Bravo!

This is my absolute favorite era and region in all history. I have always been intrigued by the transition from Rome to the Medieval period. How long did they think of themselves as Roman? Did they expect a revival? And the 'barbarians' of the north who were never conquered, salivating at the power vacuum, an opportunity of epic proportions. Thank you for your monumental work on this mysterious period.

Yeah they ended up making settlements, expanded.. and the Angelo Saxon's were born who is modern day England today lol it's crazy Rome couldn't Conquer them, they were the most feared warriors in Europe by a big margin once the world realized who the true apex was.

it's 3 1/2 hrs because he spends ages speaking realllyyyy slowwwllllyyy on details that are barely relevant, and then repeating them. i don't need to hear every little minor detail on whether or not it was a comet or a volcano, the locations of all the worlds volcanoes, the every effect of plague. if i wanted a doco on that, i would've searched for that.

@Nathan Cassidy that makes no sense? i'm commenting to express my frustration, and hopefully warn others. i got 40 mins in and he hadn't even gotten close to talking about post-romano british history. i don't care about justinian and the plague, i've heard it 1000x already.. i don't mind if he quickly presents it to build the base, but not when he drones on about it endlessly when the doco is advertised to be about something else.

Top quality TRvid content like this does not come along often. When it does it reminds me of how lucky we are to have creators such as yourself producing work that far surpasses anything a major TV network can offer in the historical documentary field. I'd happily pay my BBC licence fee if they were capable of providing me with content like this, but they haven't even come close to making anything on the same level as this masterpiece in recent years. Viewing this on the heels of your The Entire History of Viking England, I craved a deeper understanding of the time between the end of Roman Britain in the 5th century, and the Viking invasions of the 8th. This video answered so many of my questions that there are too many to name. And I like the dramatic flair in your videos. It creates a nice alternative to and balance between the dryness of history tomes and the largely sensationalized versions of history in Western entertainment. Thank you for your hard work!

i love how you present historical legends- describing what they did and what people wrote about them, then revealing at the end of this what we know them as. It makes it really easy to understand how magic was so readily believed in and how history so easily became legendaric. When I go walking in the peak district, and climb to the top of a hill, you can see the north stretched all around, and I imagine how it must have looked to the people that lived here thousands of years before us. Your documentary made me think about how there is still a roman fort down the road from where I live- I walk past it's old walls on my way to work- and how someone else walked past the same walls 2000 years ago. I wonder if they were also tired and complaining about going to work, and if teenagers went to hang out by the old roman walls when they were bored like they do now. I wonder what people will think of us in 2000 years, and what will remain, and if people like you will dedicate themselves to trying to find out who we were. I have watched this in segments over the last 4 days and been riveted. You are fantastic at this, Mr History Time. Thank you very much.

Just finished watching with a standing ovation, throwing roses, wiping tears and forever grateful to this immeasurable gem of knowledge. I could see this turning into an awesome show, each King, his story, his lands, and his battles a 60 minute episode leading into the next episode of his heir, every season changing to a different location of another Lord’s story, leading into the finale, where they all join forces for the final battle against their common enemy. I found this show after my nephew who is obsessed with rapper Eminem tells me that Em is the 33rd great grandson of Rhodri the Great..I didn’t know who that was (neither did he) so I went looking for info and here I am. To me even though we have technology n medicine n can make money doing things..compared to the characters in history they’re the ones who lived real lives. This was amazing thank u for making this!

Orbán Viktor Mihály There is so much history that most will never hear of or understand. I thought the Dark Ages were called such because there weren't many historians and not much was known. Knowing now that it was literally dark for generations because of whatever nature threw at the human race; volcanoes, meteors, plagues and incomprehensible weather conditions. This is an amazing body of work. I'm delighted to know more of the land where I was born in post-war Britain at Burderop Park R.A.F., Swindon. Growing up in West Texas I learned the history of these lands and not much besides the history of the European settlers. Not much of the history of those peoples that came here and made a new civilization. Thank you for the knowledge. I understand a little more of the ancients and what is left of those early Christian cultures.

@Karen Hoskins The presentation is very hyperbolic and sensationalized. You wouldn't get that impression from reading the historians writing at the time, except for specific wars or sieges, or the plague of 541 for instance. Modern historians don't call it dark ages.

This video is a mine of incredible information. For a period with so very little archeology or documentation you seem to have done an incredibly thorough job of putting together what evidence currently exists and although there's understandably a good deal of supposition, I don't think you went anywhere unreasonable. I've recently become fascinated by Post-Roman to Pre-Norman history and your videos about the period have been a cornerstone of my understanding. Great work from a dedicated creator. Thank you.

This guy is the GRAND MASTER of EU history. You must be a reincarnate of an ancient census taker or records keeper. Your channel is the go-to spot for this detailed historical content which makes me feel like I am actually there!!! Much thanks to you for all you do i

I'm a student in the 9th standard. They don't teach all this to us in school(cause only Indian history is taught). I recently became interested in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Britain. I was looking for some interactive stuff online. Suddenly I remembered your channel and stumbled upon this video. I'm only 30 minutes into this and I'm overjoyed. Just want to thank you dude.👍🏼

I love watching these documentaries. Interestingly 9% of my DNA is classed as Ancient Briton, I also have Scandinavian ancestry. I'm from Yorkshire UK, its going to sound very cringey/cheesy but I always feel an overwhelming sadness for my ancestors. I have 0% Mediterranean DNA so looks like my family were too tough to be taken by the Romans. 😌

@meme meme The Roman's tried, and they failed to defeat the Cornish in the 1st century. Upon the Roman's arrival they initially recorded the Dumnonii but later reported on the Cornovii of Dumnonii. The Romans colonized much of central and southern Britain, but Dumnonia was virtually unaffected by the conquest. Roman rule had little to no impact on the region, meaning it could flourish as a fully independent kingdom, which evidence shows was sometimes under the dominion of the kings of the Britons, and sometimes to have been governed by its own Dumnonian monarchy, either by the title of duke or king. This kingdom shared strong linguistic, political and cultural links with Brittany. The Saxons also tried and also failed to defeat the Cornish. When the Kingdom of Wessex were expanding their territory westwards towards Cornwall. The Cornish were frequently embattled with the West Saxons who used their Germanic word "walha", meaning stranger or foreigner to describe their opponents, (later specifying them as Cornwalas, the Cornish). Conflict continued until King Athelstan of England determined that the River Tamar be the formal boundary between the West Saxons and the Cornish in the year 936, making Cornwall one of the very last retreats of the true Britons.

When Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' series was released on the BBC at the start of the Millennium it was hailed as a major TV event. In his series he goes from the fall of Roman Britain to the age of Alfred the Great in about two minutes. Now, for free, around 20 years later we can watch a documentary that's over three hours long just about that same era that Schama brushed over in a few short paragraphs. That's truly amazing. Thanks for your work.

Schama is awful, as is most history on TV, as is most history in schools. "I know, let's do a series on...the Tudors! And, as always, avoid any viewpoint of what life was like for ordinary people or any criticism of the English establishment. We'll just talk about the royals and their battles and what clothes they wore."

Thank you from a one-time Medieval History student at university. I enjoyed the blending of scenery, archaeology, old texts, and the annals of the kings and kingdoms that came and went. Having read Bede, and being familiar with the expansion and uniting of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, it was good to hear the contemporary British, Pictish, and Irish/Scottish history -- where the ebbs and flows of the north -- and intermarriages between Celtic and Anglian dynasties -- mirror what happened in the south ... where you get, for example, a "West Saxon" leader with the curiously Welsh-like name of Caedwealla. It is interesting that the Northumbrian nobility, just before Bede's time, included people like Cedd and Chad (who became prominent bishops and saints) -- whose names are Celtic, not Germanic. This seems to indicate some serious intermixing of Celts and Anglo-Saxons, even at the highest levels of society. The Angles' language -- with a fair dose of Norse influence -- won out culturally, but that does not mean that every Celtic inhabitant had been replaced by an Anglo-Saxon immigrant. Britain reflects *many* successive waves of influence, and the history you relate is as much the heritage of modern Britain as the history of the Anglo-Saxons (as interesting as that is too).

Thank you for putting this together. I'm amazed how much we know about this period. I always assumed it was pretty much an unknown chunk of history with almost no evidence of anything. While you point out we can't trust all the sources we have, it's still a massive revelation to me that we can broadly piece together a intricate and complex history of this era of the British Isles.

Thanks so much for this video. You put so much work into it and gave us so much information from so many threadbare sources, I now feel that I now know how Britain came to be Britain. Makes me laugh (or cry) that the current borders and the ridiculous politicians cannot just get together and make us whole. Perhaps if we rebrand the country as Reged...

This video is an exciting and exhilarating journey through some stunning mountain landscapes on a motorcycle. The videographer has done an excellent job of capturing the beauty and grandeur of the scenery in clear, high-quality footage, which really immerses the viewer in the experience. The use of music is also well-done and helps to create a sense of adventure and excitement. The motorcycle rider's skill and control are impressive, and it's amazing to watch them navigate the winding mountain roads with such ease and confidence. The editing is smooth and well-paced, making it an enjoyable and engaging watch from start to finish. Overall, this video is a great reminder of the freedom and excitement of motorcycle travel and the beauty of the natural world. Highly recommended for anyone who loves motorcycles or nature!
